The Rangers is one of the three orders that comprise the Night's Watch. Their main duty is to defend and protect the Wall and the castles of the Night's Watch.
About
The order of rangers carries out duties that are centered around patrolling for wildlings beyond the Wall and preventing threats against the Wall.
The rangers of the Night's Watch have by far the most dangerous and demanding job, as their life is on the line constantly and often they are away from the Wall for extended periods of time. Generally recruits who are seen to be good fighters are generally raised to this order. Fighting is a part of their job, but tracking and information gathering on the wildlings is also a critical part of their mission. It is incredibly important for the Night's Watch to know of wildlings movements and just news about them and this is gathered by the rangers chiefly, though some wildlings are known to help. In order to gather this information, some rangers will develop peaceful relationships with certain wildlings, such as Craster, in order to learn information about the happenings beyond the Wall. Survival is another key to their success and rangers are expected to be able to survive for days at a time beyond the wall off the land. It should be noted that by far the rangers are the most hated of the orders of the Night's Watch by the wildlings because they are their most common hindrance and are known to be quite efficient at them killing while remaining unseen, causing fear among the free folk.
A senior member of the order, known as the First Ranger, leads the rangers.
Information gathering on the wildlings is among their chief tasks, as a result they are the most often in combat situations, because of this it is the most prestigious of the orders and is often desired by those who join the Night's Watch.
