The regency of King Aegon the Third lasted from the year 131 AC to 136 AC while the king was in his minority. It was a period of numerous political conflicts that occurred among the council of regents and several Hands of the King.

Prelude

Young King Aegon III Targaryen ascended the Iron Throne in 131 AC, at the age of eleven, after losing most of his family to the unprecedented internal conflict and civil war that came to be known as the Dance of the Dragons.[1]

Several Regents and Hands ruled in Aegon's name for the first five years of his reign until the King came of age. During the regency numerous political schemes, plots and even a few assassinations happened as the Regents and their supporters vied for political power.[1]

History

After witnessing the horrific death of his mother late in the war, Aegon had become a quite sullen, melancholic boy who spent days alone brooding. He was used as a pawn as the Lords and Regents of the small council all sought to gain a political stronghold.

The regency of King Aegon started with seven individual Regents that became known as the Council of Seven. Of these seven only Grand Maestar Munkun survived the entire regency. Regents and Hands rose and fell throughout the time, and many would be replaced over time as they died, were cast out or resigned.

Aegon's reign began during a harsh winter that first came in 130 AC, a Winter that would last till 136 AC. Disease was rampant during this time and the Winter fever took many lives in the Seven Kingdoms, including those of several Regents and Hands along the years, starting with Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake. Winter fever would later take also the new Hand of the King, Ser Tyland Lannister in 133 AC

Lord Unwin Peake who had fought and distinguished himself in both the First and Second Battle of Tumbleton was made a Regent in 132 AC and was later made Hand of the King after the death of Tyland Lannister in 133 AC. Lord Unwin used his new position to try and solidify his power and weaken his rivals by any means possible, appointing several of his kin to high office and even naming his bastard half brother Ser Mervyn Flowers to the Kingsguard, where he was given the duty of guarding King Aegons young queen, Jaehaera Targaryen.

After the suspicious death of Queen Jaehaera, (some claim suicide, some say murder), Lord Unwin Peake tried to have the boy king Aegon wed to his daughter. This scheme did not bear fruit and Aegon was wed instead to Daenaera Velaryon.

King Aegon's whipping boy and food taster Gaemon Palehair died shortly later from tasting poisoned food, meant for either King Aegon or his new queen. Lord Unwin frustrated threatened to resign the Handship to bend the regents to his will, the regents however were delighted to accept and Lord Thaddeus Rowan was made the new Hand.

The King's younger brother Prince Viserys, who many believed dead, was then found alive in Lys. After a huge ransom was paid, he was later returned to King's Landing with his new wife Larra Rogare, a wealthy daughter of the powerful and ambitious Rogare family. Larra's family owned the Rogare Bank, so powerful at the time that it was greater than the Iron Bank of Braavos.

The ambitious Rogare family soon became involved in the conflicts of this period. Accusations of wrongdoing were spread back and forth by many parties.

Lord Rowan was accused of treason and being involved in a plot with the Rogare family and was tortured for information.

Somehow Ser Marston Waters became Hand of the King despite being a member of the Kingsguard, and sent men to arrest Lady Larra after he arrested her brothers. The young King Aegon defended his brother and his brother's wife and her family, however, and refused to give her up, which led to a standoff in Maegor's Holdfast for eighteen days.

Marston, recalling his duty, attempted to fulfill his King's command and arrest those who falsely implicated the Rogares and Lord Rowan. Waters himself was killed attempting to arrest his sworn brother, Ser Mervyn Flowers.

Grandmaester Munkun briefly took over as Hand of the King and restored order until a new replacement and new regents were appointed. Torrhen Manderly was made the new Hand.

The Regency of Aegon III as they became known finally ended on Aegon III Targaryen sixteenth nameday when the King now of age entered the small council chambers and dismissed all the Regents and his Hand of the King, Lord Manderly.[2]
