Magister Rego Draz was a merchant of Pentos. He became Master of Coin during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[1]

History

Rego rose from nothing in Pentos to eventually become the cities richest man, but due to his low birth he was largely shunned by the other wealthy Pentoshi and denied a seat on the cities council of Magisters.

In 50 AC upon Jaehaerys I Targaryens sixteenth nameday, the young king dismissed Edwell Celtigar as Master of Coin, with the crown in vast depth, Jaehaerys made a bold choice and reached across the narrow sea. Jaehaerys offered Rego a seat on the small council, Rego sick of the scorn from the High born of Pentos gladly accepted the offer, moving his family and fortune to Westeros. To grant him equal honour Jaehaerys gave him the title of Lord. As he was a Lord without lands, castle or sworn men, some wit japed he was the Lord of Air.[1]

Draz excelled as Master of Coin and was one of the key men responsible for rebuilding the realm's economy after Maegor's wars left the crown severely in debt. He and Jaehaerys did away with Lord Edwell's deeply unpopular trade taxes and in their place instituted a series of luxury taxes on expensive foreign imports, as well as on castle crenellations.[1]

Though he never married, Draz had several paramours on the Street of Silk, and fathered three bastard sons.

During the harsh winter of 59 AC and the ensuing Shivers plague, famine conditions set in throughout Westeros. So many of the City Watch in King's Landing died that its snow-blanketed streets became totally lawless outside of the Red Keep. Draz lived in a manse on the Street of Silk, and being too fat to talk the distance was usually carried to the castle in a palanquin. One day as he was being carried through Flea Bottom a starving mob dragged Draz from his palanquin, and realizing he was Pentoshi, killed him (as foreigners were blamed for bringing the plague to Westeros). Draz's head was bashed in using a cobblestone from one of the new streets he himself had helped pay for, and his fingers were cut off to talk the jewels from them. Jaehaerys himself subsequently sallied forth from the Red Keep with what few guards were left, found the men responsible, and had then hung from the walls of the castle with their entrails hanging out.[2]

Quotes by Rego

If I could tax air, I would be a lord indeed.[1]
