Rickard is gaunt and large, with a thick beard and hair loose past his shoulders.[1]

History

Named after Lord Rickard Stark,[2] Rickard Karstark fought for Eddard Stark when the North rebelled against the Mad King during the War of the Usurper.[2]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Lord Rickard brings his forces to Winterfell when Robb Stark calls his banners. He is accompanied by his three sons, Torrhen, Eddard and Harrion.[3] When the northern host splits at the Twins, Rickard stays with Robb and takes part in the battles of the Whispering Wood and the Camps.

Rickard's younger sons, Torrhen and Eddard, are killed by Ser Jaime Lannister during the Battle of the Whispering Wood. Lord Rickard swears fealty to Robb when Lord Greatjon Umber declares him the King in the North. [1]

A Clash of Kings

Lord Rickard storms out of the Great Hall of Riverrun when Robb Stark explains his terms for peace with the Iron Throne.[4] The Lord of Karhold fights beside Robb at the Battle of Oxcross, in which he personally kills Ser Stafford Lannister. Rickard then raids along the western coast.[5]

A Storm of Swords

After Catelyn Tully releases Ser Jaime Lannister from captivity, Lord Rickard, overcome with grief and anger, murders Willem Lannister and Tion Frey in their cells at Riverrun and sends his men to track down the Kingslayer, promising his daughter Alys to anyone who recovers Jaime for him. King Robb Stark declares Rickard a traitor and sentences him to die. Following his father's teachings, Robb carries out the sentence himself. With his last breath Rickard curses Robb, denounces him as his king, and calls him a kinslayer due to the blood ties between Stark and Karstark.[2] Rickard is succeeded by his sole surviving son, Harrion, a captive of the Iron Throne.

Quotes by Rickard

Any man who steps between a father and his vengeance asks for death.[2]

Robb: This is my work, He dies at my word. He must die by my hand.

Rickard: For that much, I thank you. But for naught else.

The blood of the First Men flows in my veins as much as yours, boy. You would do well to remember that. I was named for your grandfather. I raised my banners against King Aerys for your father, and against King Joffrey for you. At Oxcross and the Whispering Wood and in the Battle of the Camps, I rode beside you, and I stood with Lord Eddard on the Trident. We are kin, Stark and Karstark.[2]

– Rickard and Robb Stark

Old gods or new, it makes no matter, no man is so accursed as the kinslayer.[2]

Quotes about Rickard

Rickard Karstark killed more than a Frey and a Lannister. He killed my honor.[2]
