Ser Robar is "comely in a rough-hewn way".[5] He has pale eyes.[6]

Robar is a good tourney warrior and a skilled swordsman.[5][7] Catelyn Stark thinks that Robar and the company he keeps are young and foolish because they see war as a game.[8]

Robar's silvered steel plate is filigreed in bronze with inscribed runes. Like those worn by his kin, the ancient runes are said to protect House Royce from harm.[2]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Robar attends the Hand's tourney in King's Landing with his father, Lord Yohn Royce, and his elder brother, Ser Andar. Robar defeats Lothor Brune and is defeated in turn by Ser Loras Tyrell.[2]

After Lord Eddard Stark decides to send a party to bring Ser Gregor Clegane to justice for raiding the riverlands, he sends Ser Robar to the kingswood to inform King Robert I Baratheon and Yohn.[9] After Robert dies from being gored by a boar, the Royces are among the nobles who King Joffrey I Baratheon insists must do homage to him or be named traitors.[10]

A Clash of Kings

As a second son Robar has to make his own name, so he decides to support Renly Baratheon's claim to the Iron Throne as the War of the Five Kings begins. Renly appoints him to his Rainbow Guard as Robar the Red and gives him a suit of blood red armor and a rainbow cloak.[5]

When Catelyn Stark attends the feast near Bitterbridge, Lord Bryce Caron, a fellow member of the Rainbow Guard as Bryce the Orange, goads Robar into juggling daggers.[8]

On the eve of the battle at Storm's End between the brothers Renly and Stannis Baratheon, Robar escorts Catelyn from Renly's camp to a nearby sept and back.[5] The quiet Robar discusses the upcoming battle with the loud Ser Wendel Manderly.[6]

Seconds after the murder of Renly, Robar and Ser Emmon Cuy burst into the tent with two men-at-arms to find Renly's dead body in the arms of their fellow Rainbow Guard, Brienne Tarth. They both think that Brienne the Blue has killed Renly, and Emmon the Yellow and others attack her. Catelyn, who has seen the murder, is able to convince a frightened Robar that Brienne is innocent. The young knight tells Catelyn to take Brienne away, and he holds the attackers at bay as Catelyn and Brienne depart.[6]

When he finds Renly dead, Ser Loras Tyrell, the Lord Commander of the Rainbow Guard, kills Robar and Emmon in a red rage for their "failure" to protect the king.[11]

A Storm of Swords

Now a member of the Kingsguard, Loras sadly recalls that he killed Robar in his rage.[12] He regrets his actions after Ser Jaime Lannister tells of Brienne's innocence.[13]

Quotes by Robar

A second son must find glory where he can. A man grows weary of tourneys.[5]

—Robar to Catelyn Stark

Catelyn: She is innocent, Robar. You have my word, on my husband's grave and my honor as a Stark!
Robar: I will hold them. Get her away.[6]

Catelyn Stark and Robar

Quotes about Robar

Ser Robar's ancestral runes proved small protection as Ser Loras split his shield and drove him from his saddle to crash with an awful clangor in the dirt. Robar lay moaning as the victor made his circuit of the field.[2]

—thoughts of Sansa Stark

They are still unblooded, Catelyn thought as she watched Lord Bryce goad Ser Robar into juggling a brace of daggers. It is all a game to them still, a tourney writ large, and all they see is the chance for glory and honor and spoils. They are boys drunk on song and story, and like all boys, they think themselves immortal.[8]

—thoughts of Catelyn Stark

Renly is dead. Robar as well. What use to speak of them?[12]
