Rodrik Harlaw is the Lord of Harlaw, Lord of the Ten Towers and House Harlaw of Harlaw. He is nicknamed Rodrik the Reader because he is always reading. He is the captain of the Sea Song.

Appearance and Character

An average-looking man, Rodrik has brown hair and eyes and a short, neat beard that is grey. He has requested a Myrish lense to assist with his vision.[1]

History

Rodrik's two sons died at the Battle of Fair Isle during the Greyjoy Rebellion.[1]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Lord Rodrik assembles all those faithful to Asha Greyjoy at the Ten Towers. He tries to convince Asha not to attend the kingsmoot at Old Wyk, fearing a bad outcome. He offers to name her his heir but she refuses.[1] At the kingsmoot he is one of the first to call Asha's name.[2]

After the Battle of the Shield Islands Rodrik is spotted by Victarion Greyjoy and Nute the Barber talking with Gorold Goodbrother and Dunstan Drumm in the castle yard at Lord Hewett's Town. They discuss their fears that the gains from the battle are little compared to the emnity of the Reach they have earned.[3]

A Dance with Dragons

Asha recalls how after her uncle Euron Greyjoy was named the new king at the kingsmoot, Rodrik told her to flee while her uncle was busy. He also recommended she read Haereg's History of the Ironborn, which recounts the only time a kingsmoot decision was overturned.[4]

Quotes

I prefer my history dead. Dead history is writ in ink, the living sort in blood.[1]
