Salt king was an ancient title among the ironborn during the Age of Heroes. Each of the Iron Islands had both a Rock and a salt king. While the rock king ruled the island itself, the salt king commanded at sea, whenever the island's longships sailed. They were chosen at the kingsmoot.[1]
The tradition of salt kings ended with Urron Greyiron abolished kingsmoots.
