Ser Stafford Lannister is a knight of House Lannister. He is the good-brother to the Warden of the West as his sister, Lady Joanna, married their cousin, Lord Tywin Lannister.[4]

Character

Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Brynden Tully are both unimpressed by Stafford's martial capacities, with Jaime considering his uncle to be blundering.[5][6]

History

When he was a young squire, Stafford and two Lannisters of Lannisport were captured by Lady Ellyn Tarbeck in retaliation for the imprisonment of her husband, Lord Walderan Tarbeck, by Ser Tywin Lannister. Lord Tytos Lannister forced the prisoners to be exchanged, however. Hostilities later erupted with the Reyne-Tarbeck rebellion, which Tywin suppressed.[5][7]

Stafford has been negotiating to betroth his son, Ser Daven Lannister, to Desmera Redwyne, although an agreement has not been reached with Lord Paxter Redwyne.[8]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

After the capture of Ser Jaime Lannister in the Whispering Wood and the defeat of Jaime's host in the Battle of the Camps, Stafford begins raising a new army near Lannisport. Because the force consists of inexperienced men, it takes a long time to train them.[6] Feeling safe in the westerlands, Stafford does not post sentries.[3]

Robb Stark, the new King in the North, marches west from Riverrun and avoids the strong Golden Tooth by using a goat track found by his direwolf.[9] When Robb's army descends on Stafford's men in the night, the surprised Lannister is destroyed in the Battle of Oxcross. Stafford is lanced by Lord Rickard Karstark when he tries to reach his horse.[3] According to some stories, Robb fed Stafford's heart to Grey Wind after the battle, which Catelyn Stark finds ridiculous.[9]

A Storm of Swords

Stafford's more capable son, Ser Daven, reforms the survivors from Oxcross at Lannisport.[10]

A Feast for Crows

Daven had vowed not to cut his hair until he had avenged his father's death,[8] but Lord Karstark was himself executed by Robb Stark for treason.[11] Daven, now the Warden of the West, has continued to grow his hair out.[8]

Quotes

Brynden: Brother to Lord Tywin's late wife, so twice related. An old man and a bit of a dullard, but he has a son, Ser Daven, who is more formidable.
Catelyn: Then let us hope it is the father and not the son who takes this army into the field.[6]

Do not take Oxcross too much to heart, my lady. A battle is not a war, and my lord father is assuredly not my uncle Stafford. The next time you visit the godswood, pray that your brother has the wisdom to bend the knee.[3]

Family

Stafford has seven siblings: one older bastard half-sister, Lynora Hill, one older trueborn half-brother, Damon Lannister, one older full sister, Joanna Lannister, two younger full brothers and two younger full sisters. Stafford is married to Lady Myranda Lefford with whom he has three children, Ser Daven, Cerenna and Myrielle Lannister.[4][12]
