The stewards is one of the three orders that comprise the Night's Watch. Their main duty is to supply the Watch with food, clothing, and anything else needed for war.[1]

About

According to semi-canon sources, the order of stewards is the largest of the three orders of the Night's Watch.[2] The stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions, providing vital day-to-day services for their brothers on the wall. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and bring the supplies needed by the Night's Watch from the south.[3][4] Personal stewards can be assigned to higher officers (e.g. Jeor Mormont[5] and Ser Mallador Locke[6][7]) for whom they might also squire,[8] or to a maester (e.g. Aemon[3]).

A senior member of the order, known as the Lord Steward, leads the stewards.[5]

Despite the fact that making war upon the wildlings is not amongst the tasks of the stewards, they are trained in arms, as the first duty of all the brothers of the Night's Watch is to defend the Wall.[1]

Known Stewards

The following members of the Night's Watch are known to belong to the order of the stewards:

Historical stewards

  • Rat Cook, a character from a legend of the Night's Watch.

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Most of the four hundred men who remain at Castle Black when Lord Commander Jeor Mormont leads two hundred brothers out for the great ranging are builders and stewards.[16]

Several members of the Night's Watch, including multiple stewards, plot several assassinations in order to be able to desert north of the Wall.[17] Their plans are halted when wights attack the Fist of the First Men.[17] Later, at Craster's Keep, several of the stewards mutiny.[11]

A Feast for Crows

Clubfoot Karl, Orphan Oss and Muttering Bill, former stewards since their desertion, remain at Craster's Keep following the mutiny, along with several other of their brothers.[7]
