Order of stewards
Nights Watch Stewards.jpg
Stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions (from Game of Thrones Blu-ray)
Type Order
Region Gift, Wall
Allegiance Night's Watch
Current Leader Bowen Marsh
Founded Age of Heroes

The order of stewards is one of the three orders that comprise the Night's Watch, the others being the builders and the rangers. The stewards' main duty is to supply the Watch with food, clothing, and anything else needed for war.[1] A senior member, known as the Lord Steward or First Steward, leads the order.[2]

Tasks

The stewards are responsible for an assortment of critical functions, providing vital day-to-day services for their brothers on the wall. They hunt and farm, tend horses, gather firewood, cook meals, make clothing, maintain weapons, and bring the supplies needed by the Night's Watch from the south.[3][4] Personal stewards can be assigned to higher officers (e.g. Jeor Mormont[2] and Ser Mallador Locke)[5][6] for whom they might also squire,[7] or to a maester (e.g. Aemon.[3])

Despite the fact that making war upon the wildlings is not among the tasks of the stewards, they are trained in arms, as the first duty of all the brothers of the Night's Watch is to defend the Wall.[1]

With Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, leading two hundred brothers north of the Wall during the great ranging, most of the four hundred men who remain at Castle Black are builders and stewards.[8]

Several members of the Night's Watch, including multiple stewards, plot to kill the lord commander at the Fist of the First Men, but their plans are interrupted by the fight at the Fist.[9] Later, several of the stewards participate in the mutiny at Craster's Keep.[10]

A Feast for Crows

Clubfoot Karl, Orphan Oss and Muttering Bill, former stewards since their desertion, remain at Craster's Keep following the mutiny, along with several other of their brothers.[6]

A Dance with Dragons
