Hi, I was wondering which tense the people who own this wiki would like it to be written in.

Conventionally, when documenting the timeline of a series of historical events (fictional or otherwise), the Historical Present is used instead of the Past tense as it helps to segment the narrative, giving each event an equal sense of importance.

The usage of the historical present is particularly prevalent in historical chronicles, and as this is a historical chronicle (albeit a fictional one), I was thinking that changing the whole article into the historical present would give it a much more professional feel.

I raise this subject as, up until recently, the majority of the Timeline was actually written in the historical present albeit with a scattering of seemingly random exceptions. However, a recent edit (28th May 2012) has seen a large amount of this changed into the past tense by a user who admits that English is his second language.

I would like to know which tense the owners of this wiki would prefer to be used in the article before I undo a lot of this user’s hard work.

Arnar

The reference to Rhoynar city of Anar was taken from the Wikipedia article. Werthead added it there. "Arnar", not Anar, was mentioned in the second Tyrion chapter of A Dance with Dragons. See Tyrion 2 - Spoilers for ADWD

Still Dance is not yet published so probably it should not (yet) be in the article. Scafloc 12:07, 2 August 2008 (CDT)

Layout

  • Added tables, in what I hope improve readability in sections like the 'Targaryens Dynasty' where the dates and events blended into one big mess.
  • Rephrased the description of time periods, trying to start each one with link to the main figure/event article, also interlinked to relevant articles.
  • Removed the pointless BAL suffixes I added, and the AL that were used and placed a simple explanation on top.
  • still need to expand and improve flow on some of the entries (kind of hard to do with my english).

Any thoughts on the direction or ideas on how to improve this timeline further? Mor 19:28, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Tense
