Tom Turnip was a royal jester and fool at court in the Red Keep during the late reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[1]

Appearance and Character

Tom was described as a simpleton. He was clumsy and prone to tremors.[1]

History

Tom Turnip was a fool in the court of King Jaehaerys and his sister-wife, Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Their daughter, Princess Saera Targaryen, often played cruel pranks on Tom, such as once telling him it would amuse the court if he performed naked at a great feast, but his actions were poorly received. On another occasion, Saera told Tom that if he climbed the Iron Throne he would become king, but the fool sliced his arms and legs to pieces when he attempted to do so.[1]

In 84 AC, Ser Braxton Beesbury, Jonah Mooton and Lord Roy Connington were found drunk at the Blue Pearl, a brothel in King's Landing, laughing as Tom was surrounded by six whores. When the drunk lordlings were questioned by gold cloaks, Red Roy admitted they thought it would be funny to see the fool do the deed, and Jonah admitted it was Princess Saera's idea. When brought before King Jaehaerys, the lordlings confessed to bringing Tom to the brothel but remained quiet about Saera's involvement. Saera's activities with the three men were uncovered, however, after Alysanne spoke with Perianne Moore and Alys Turnberry.[1]

Quotes

Saera: That must have been so funny, Turnip dancing with the whores.

Jaehaerys: Not for Tom.

Saera: He is a fool. Fools are meant to be laughed at, where is the harm in that? Turnip loves it when you laugh at him.[1]
