Contents
Appearance
Walder Frey is a big and portly lad and is known as Little Walder in a mocking joke. He is tall and stout, with a red face and big round belly.[2]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Little Walder is present at the Twins when Catelyn Tully comes to treat with Lord Walder Frey. As part of the terms allowing Robb Stark to cross at the Twins, Little Walder is sent to Winterfell to be fostered.
A Clash of Kings
Little Walder is sent to Winterfell to become a ward. Accompanied by his cousin, Big Walder, he quickly makes friends with Rickon Stark, but is not friendly with Bran Stark, nor Jojen and Meera Reed. More often than not Little Walder wins the game lord of the crossing.[2] During the harvest feast, Little Walder trains with knights from White Harbor.[1] When word of Ser Stevron Frey's death arrives at Winterfell, Little Walder and Big Walder argue over who is next in line to inherit, showing no sadness at their relative's passing.[3] Both Walders are taken captive by Ramsay Snow during the Sack of Winterfell.[4]
A Storm of Swords
A letter written by Big Walder and signed by both Frey cousins is sent to the Twins claiming Theon Greyjoy burned Winterfell. Lame Lothar Frey conveys this false report to King Robb Stark.[5]
A Feast for Crows
Little Walder is listed as a squire to Ramsay Bolton.[6]
A Dance with Dragons
Little Walder is offered as a husband to Wylla Manderly by Rhaegar Frey when the Freys go to White Harbor to return the bones of Wendel Manderly to his father, Lord Wyman Manderly.[7]
Lady Barbrey Dustin gives grey colts to Walder and his cousin when they join Ramsay Bolton in searching for missing Freys.[8] Theon Greyjoy notes Little Walder is becoming more and more like Ramsay Bolton, which disturbs both Theon and Little Walder's cousin, Big Walder.[8]
Little Walder's body is discovered in the ruined keep of Winterfell after the wedding of Ramsay to "Arya Stark". Theon suspects Mance Rayder and his wildling spearwives of the deed but they claim it is no work of theirs. According to Big Walder, Little Walder was looking for a Manderly knight who owed him a coin Little Walder won from a game of dice. Ser Hosteen Frey, however accuses Wyman Manderly of killing or ordering the death. Wyman does not take credit for the murder, but says,
Though mayhaps this was a blessing. Had he lived he would have grown up to be a Frey.[9]
This causes an enraged Hosteen to attack Wyman, leading to a confrontation that leaves six White Harbour men and two Freys dead. It takes the intervention of Bolton's men to prevent a battle within Winterfell.[9]
Quotes about Little Walder
The big one they call little, it comes to me he's well named. Big outside, little inside, and mean down to the bones.[1]
