Revision as of 18:29, 19 August 2014

In the main series and novellas, George R. R. Martin does not state specifically in which year a certain event has taken place. This page lists the calculations to determine such years of all events for which this can be done, as specific as is possible, for all events for which this is possible. This information then can be used in articles and serves to give a more complete image of the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Turning of the years

Main Series

297 AC

The prologue in A Game of Thrones takes definitely place in 297AC. During the Hand's tourney, Sansa Stark mentions that she met Ser Raymar Royce and his father when they visited Winterfell, on their way to the Wall. The timeframe Sansa mentions was 2 years ago.[1] During the prologue, Ser Waymar has been on the Wall for almost half a year.[2] The time in between Sansa remembering having met the Royces (during the Hand's tourney), and one of Ser Waymar's fellow rangers getting decapitated (during A Game of Thrones, Bran I), seems to have been at least 7 months, since King Robert visited Winterfell for at least one month, and the journey from Winterfell to King's Landing, and thus also from King's Landing to Winterfell, took about 2 months each. Robert cannot have left for Winterfell until 2 weeks after Joffrey’s 12th nameday (since he did not leave until Jon Arryn had died, and Jon died a fortnight after Joffrey's nameday), which is known to have taken place in 298 AC (see the Joffrey Baratheon calculation), although most likely more time passed in between Jon Arryn’s death and Robert leaving for Winterfell, seeing as how Cersei and her children were not in King's Landing when Jon Arryn died (they were making a tour to Casterly Rock), but they were present in the royal party. Naturally, some weeks passed in between arriving at King's Landing and the Tourney of the Hand, which are guessed at the lower bar of 1 month.

With roughly seven months having passed since one member of Ser Waymar’s group was found, and with roughly 2 years having passed since Waymar still being on the way to Winterfell, this leaves a little less than a year and a half in between, half a year of which Waymar spend at the Wall. With some months in between his visit to Winterfell and his actual arrival at the Wall, Waymar and his group, consisting out of rangers Gared and Will, seem to have been considered missing for somewhat more than half a year, before Gared was found and arrested. Searching parties were still being send out to find them, which happened as well with Benjen Stark, who was still being searched for even though he had been missing for half a year.

298 AC

With Joffrey’s 13th nameday taking place in 299 AC (see Joffrey Baratheon), his 12th nameday will have taken place in 298 AC. Jon Arryn dies after Joffrey’s 12th nameday,[3] and the first chapter (Bran I) from A Game of Thrones takes place after Arryn’s death. A Game of Thrones thus starts with a certainty in 298 AC, with the exception of the prologue (see 297AC above).

The only other exception to this might be the Daenerys chapters in A Game of Thrones. Daenerys’ chapters in A Game of Thrones take place earlier in the timeline than all the other POVs, and might even partly take place in 297AC. See Daenerys Targaryen for more information about this.

298 AC to 299 AC

With certainty it can be said that the events in the storylines from Catelyn Tully’s POV in A Game of Thrones has crossed into the year 299 AC upon reaching the Twins (see Walder Frey (Big Walder) and Walder Frey (Little Walder)), which provides us with one mark for crossing of the year.

With Rickon Stark having been born in 295 AC (see Rickon Stark), Rickon’s age can be used as well for the turning of the years. From the Bran chapter where Rickon is mentioned to be four years old, all Bran storyline chapters occur certainly in 299 AC. This automatically means that the news of Ned Starks death, occurring in said chapter, reaches Winterfell in 299 AC.

Since the Red Comet appears in the sky after Rickon has turned 4, all POVs where the Red Comet appears can be said to take place in 299 AC with certainty.

It can currently not be determined any more specific when the year turns into 299AC.

299 AC to 300 AC

The wedding of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell is known to take place on the first day of 300 AC. With Joffrey Baratheon still 13 years old on his wedding day, while he has been 13 years old during the events of A Clash of Kings, as the books starts the King's Landing story line (thus Tyrion's and Sansa's POVs) with his 13th nameday, his 13th nameday thus took place in the year 299 AC.

With Joffrey's wedding, and thus death, occuring on the first day of 300AC, all chapters in which his death is mentioned, and onwards, take place in 300AC.

In A Feast for Crows the Dorne storyline begins with the news of Oberyn Martell's death having already arrived. Oberyn Martell died after Joffrey's wedding day, and thus in 300AC, placing the entire Dornish storyline (Areo Hotah and Arianne Martell POVs) in 300AC.

300 AC onwards

With Roslin Frey still being pregnant during the final chapters of ‘‘A Dance with Dragons’’, and with her becoming pregnant during the final month of 299 AC (prior to Joffrey’s mentioned wedding on the first day of 300 AC), ‘‘A Dance with Dragons’’ ends in 300 AC

The Arya chapters in ‘‘A Dance with Dragons’’ are a source of speculation, since Arya’s story line takes place separately of the other POVs during the novel. Even though Arya’s chapters span large periods of time, or large periods of time pass in between, it seems that Arya’s chapters in ‘‘A Dance with Dragons’’ do end in 300 AC, looking at the events occurring in the sample chapter Mercy, from ‘‘The Winds of Winter’’. Also syncing up is the first time it is mentioned to have snowed in the Riverlands, which occurs in the last Jaime chapter in ‘‘Dance’’. Arya later sees this occurring through the eyes of direwolf Nymeria, when she enters the wolf in her sleep.

Dunk & Egg Series

The Hedge Knight

Duncan the Tall described his age in The Hedge Knight as "16 or 17", and in The Sworn Sword as "18 or 19". This already suggests that 2 years have passed. In addition Duncan makes several mentions of the time that has passed since Ashford in The Sworn Sword:

That was what they always said of those who had perished during the Great Spring Sickness two years past.

Ser Arlan's is two years dead

Egg had served Dunk for a good year and a half, though some days it seemed like twenty.

Ser Arlan dies while he and Dunk are on the way to Ashford.[4] They were about a day's ride away from Ashford, where Dunk stays for a few days, for the remainder of the tourney, and his trial. Shortly (a few days) after Dunk's trial has been done, Aegon "Egg" enters Dunks service.

Ser Arlan is dead for 2 years, while Aegon has been Dunk's squire for a good year and a half. This suggests that the actual passing of time is somewhere in between, around 1,75 years, or differently said, 1 year and 9 months.

In addition, when the Sworn Sword starts, Dunk states that he had been in Oldtown "half a year past", and that he had spend "a year in Dorne". When describing his travels, Dunk describes how the passage to Oldtown had been booked in Dorne, showing that after a year in Dorne, Dunk and Egg went to Oldtown. In between their time in Oldtown and the events of the Sworn Sword, half a year had passed, again showing that a minimum of half a year had passed.

Concluded can be that the time that has passed between The Hedge Knight and 'The Sworn Sword was in between 1,5 years and 2 years. With the Sworn Sword taking place in 211AC, this places The Hedge Knight in 209 AC

Further confirmations comes from the fact that it is mentioned that Prince Maekar has been at Summerhall since his father's death for almost 1,5 years, where he went after the Spring Sickness ended in 209AC.

The Sworn Sword

Between The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, a year passes. For this, a confirmation can be found in both novellas:

  • In The Sworn Sword the Redgrass Field is mentioned to have been 15 years ago[5]
  • In The Mystery Knight the Redgrass Field is mentioned to have been 16 years ago[6]

This shows that between The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight the year has turned. With The Mystery Knight taking place 212AC, this places The Sworn Sword a year before, in 211 AC.

In addition, it is known that the Redgrass Field took place in 196AC. Adding up 15 years to that, brings the count to the year 211AC for the Sworn Sword.

The Mystery Knight

The Mystery Knight features a 4-year old Walder Frey.[6] Walder was born in 208 AC (see Walder Frey for the calculation). That means that Walder was 4 years old in:

  • 212AC, when he was 3 turning 4
  • 213AC, when he was 4 turning 5

Thus The Mystery Knight took place in one of these two years.

It is stated that the Battle of the Redgrass Field took place 16 years prior. The Battle of the Redgrass Fields took place in 196 AC. 16 years since 196AC places the Mystery Knight in 212 AC.

Wars and important military events

War of the Ninepenny Kings

It is known that the War of the Ninepenny Kings took place during the reign of Jaehaerys II Targaryen.[7] Jaehaerys reigned from 259 AC until 262 AC.[8]

According to his White Book entry, Barristan Selmy killed Maelys Blackfyre before joining the Kingsguard. Barristan killed Maelys during the War of the Ninepenny Kings.[9] It is known that Barristan was 23 years old when he joined the Kingsguard. With Barristan's birth in 237 AC (see Barristan Selmy calculation), that gives him two options of having been 23 years old:

  • 260AC, having been 22 turning 23
  • 261AC, having been 23 turning 24

Since it is unknown whether Barristan joined the Kingsguard immediately after the War of the Ninepenny Kings, or a year or two later, the first year of Jaehaerys' reign, 259AC, remains the minimum year.

Since Barristan's nameday seems to appear early in the year, Barristan would have been 23 years old for most of 260AC, but only shortly in 261AC. Thus it seems most likely that the Barristan joined the Kingsguard in 260AC, which would mean that the War of the Ninepenny Kings took place in either 259AC or 260AC.

However, "it seems most likely" isn't accurate. To remain as accurate as is possible, it has to be stated that the War of the Ninepenny Kings took place in or between 259 AC and 261 AC.

Defiance at Duskendale

Aerys had not set foot outside the Red Keep since Duskendale, yet suddenly he announced that he would accompany Prince Rhaegar to Harrenhal, and everything had gone awry from there.

[10]

According to Barristan Selmy, King Aerys II Targaryen hadn't set a foot out of the Red Keep since Duskendale, yet he made an exception when he went to the Tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC. Since it is known that Aerys visited a tourney in the Westerlands, hosted by Lord Tywin Lannister, when Rhaegar Targaryen was 17 years old, the Defiance of Duskendale thus must have taken place somewhere in between these two tourneys.

During Aerys' visit to the Westerlands, Rhaegar Targaryen had been 17 years old, and Cersei Lannister had been 10 years old. With Rhaegar's birth in 259 AC,[7] and Cersei's birth in 266 AC (see Cersei Lannister calculation), there are two possibilities for the date of this tourney:

  • 276AC
    • Rhaegar would have been 16 turning 17
    • Cersei would have been 9 turning 10
  • 277AC
    • Rhaegar would have been 17 turning 18
    • Cersei would have been 10 turning 11

As can be seen, in both years the criteria are met: Rhaegar is 17 years old, and Cersei 10. A definite date for the tourney cannot be given, but it can be stated with certainty that the tourney took place no earlier than 276AC. It is thus known that Aerys had left the Red Keep in 276AC at least.

Barristan Selmy's White Book entry states his accomplishments in the following order:

  • Named to the Kingsguard in his 23rd year, by Lord Commander Ser Gerold Hightower.
  • Defended the passage against all challengers in the tourney of the Silver Bridge.
  • Victor in the meddle at Maidenpool.
  • Brought King Aerys II to safety during the Defiance of Duskendale, despite an arrow wound in the chest. Avenged the murder of his Sworn Brother, Ser Gwayne Gaunt.
  • Rescued Lady Jeyne Swann and her septa from the Kingswood Brotherhood, defeating Simon Toyne and the Smiling Knight, and slaying the former.

As can be seen, the Defiance took place before the Kingswood Brotherhood was defeated. The brotherhood was defeated early in 281AC, again establishing the year 281AC as the maximum year for the Defiance.

The Defiance thus took place in or between 276 AC and 281 AC.

Even your royal father came to Harrenhal, when he had not left the Red Keep for long years.

[11]

This is another quote from Barristan Selmy. The part "when he had not left the Red Keep for long years" suggests a minimum of two years since the Defiance took place. Since Harrenhal took place in 281 AC, a minimum of 2 years can be subtracted, to find the maximum date for the Defiance at Duskendale.

This places the Defiance in or between 276 AC and 279 AC.

In addition: It is also known that Dontos Hollard was a boy when the Defiance took place. Dontos was born in or between 260 AC and 263 AC (see Dontos Hollard calculation). With Dontos being described as both "young" and having been a "boy",[12] he would not have been 16 years old yet, since a 16 year old is seen as a man grown in Westeros. It seems most likely that Dontos was younger than 15, which favors Dontos' birth to have been closer to 263AC, and the Defiance closer to 276AC than to 279AC, making Dontos as young as possible. At the youngest, Dontos was born in 263AC, and the Defiance ended in 276AC the earliest, which could make him as young as 12 (to be turning 13 later in the year), which would qualify as young.

Thus, it seems most likely that the Defiance took place closer to 276AC than to 279AC. However, no certain specification can be given to make the possible timeframe smaller.

Battles during Robert's Rebellion/War of the Usurper

Battle of the Bells

In 300AC, it is stated that it has been 17 years since the Battle of the Bells.[13] That places the Battle of the Bells in 283 AC.

Battle of the Trident

The Battle of the Trident occurred before the Sack of King’s Landing, about a week apart (see Note#1). In between these two events, Rhaella Targaryen fled King’s Landing. Daenerys Targaryen was born 9 month after their flight[14], in 284AC (see the Daenerys Targaryen calculation). Jon Snow was born 8 to 9 months before Daenerys[15], in 283AC (see the Jon Snow calculation). With Jon having been born up to from a week after the Trident until 3 weeks after the Sack, this shows the Battle of the Trident took place in 283AC, before Jons birth.

Note#1 :Lord Rossart became a Hand a fortnight before the Sack of King’s Landing.[16] Rossart became Hand after Lord Qarlton Chelsted died. Chelsted died the day before Rhaegar left with his army for the Trident.[17] This shows that an army can march from King’s Landing to the Trident, fight a battle, regroup (the rebels) and march towards King’s Landing with haste (the rebels, led by Eddard Stark) within a fortnight. The Battle at the Trident would have taken place somewhere in the middle.

Sack of King's Landing

The Sack of King’s Landing occurred about a week after the Battle of the Trident (see Note#1). In between these two events, Rhaella Targaryen fled King’s Landing. Daenerys Targaryen was born 9 month after their flight[14], in 284AC (see the Daenerys Targaryen calculation). Jon Snow was born 8 to 9 months before Daenerys(RefMissing), in 283AC (see the Jon Snow). With Jon having been born up to from a week after the Trident until 3 weeks after the Sack, this shows the Sack of King’s Landign took place in 283AC, before Jons birth.

As confirmation, it is stated in 300 AC that it has been 17 years since Elia died. [18] Elia’s death occurred during the Sack of King’s Landing.

Greyjoy Rebellion

Eddard Stark remembers the Greyoy Rebellion as having occurred 9 years prior in 298 AC[19], when at least 3 months have already passed in the year (a fortnight between the nameday of Joffrey Baratheon and the death of Jon Arryn; 1 to 2 weeks before Cersei Lannister and the children returned to King’s Landing; 2 month’s journey to Winterfell).

The War of the Five Kings

Death of Robert Baratheon

After Robert Baratheon returns from his hunt mortally wounded, Eddard Stark writes a letter to Stannis Baratheon.[20] The statements made in the letter are valid for understanding when being read by Stannis. Eddard Stark writes that Robert has been the King "these past 15 years". With the knowledge that Robert became King in 283AC,[21], that places Robert's death in 298 AC.

Execution of Eddard Stark

Eddard Stark was still alive while the Battle of the Whispering Wood was being fought, according to his wife, Catelyn Tully.[22] This means that Eddard died after the Battle of the Whispering Wood. Since the Battle of the Whispering Wood was fought after the crossing of the Twins by the northern army (which occurred in 299AC, see 298AC to 299AC), Eddard Starks execution thus also took place in 299 AC.

Coronation of Robb Stark

Robb Stark's coronation takes place after the northern army has crossed the Twins. The crossing of the Twins occurs in 299AC (see 298AC to 299AC). This shows that Robb Stark was crowned king in 299 AC as well.

Battle of Oxcross

The Battle or Oxcross is the first major battle after Robb Starks coronation. Robb Stark was crowned in 299 AC (see above), showing that the Battle of Oxcross took place in 299 AC as well.

Since Oxcross, all battles fought in the War of the Five Kings up until Robb Starks' death are fought in 299 AC. This includes the following major battles:

It is possible that the Siege of Riverrun also begins in 299 AC, since it seems that there are a few weeks between the Red Wedding and the first day of 300AC, seeing as how Joffrey Baratheon, after receiving news about the Red Wedding (by the means of a raven, which would have taken a few days to arrive at King's Landing, from the Twins), seems to believe there is still enough time to send a raven back to the Twins, and have a rider ride from the Twins back to King's Landing in time for Joffrey's wedding feast on the first day of 300AC.[23] With the Freys working together with the Lannisters, it can be assumed that the Siege of Riverrun started as soon as was possible after the Red Wedding. Due to travel lengths (it took Robb Stark and his army 20 days at least (see here for the count), it cannot be stated with certainty, since the preparations of the Freys concerning the Siege are unknown.

Tourneys

100 AC - 200 AC

Tourney for King Viserys I's accession

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen was 7 years old during this tournament.[24] It is known that Princess Rhaenyra was born in 97AC,[24], meaning that she could only have been 7 years old in 104AC (6 turning 7) and in 105AC (7 turning 8). Since the tourney was held for King Viserys' accession to the throne, it would have been held as closely to the actually accession as was possible, making the option of 105AC highly unlikely, as Viserys would have been king for more than a year by then.

The tourney was thus held in 104 AC.

Unnamed Tourney

The tourney where Aemon the Dragonknight fought as the mystery knight, the Knight of Tears, was held while King Aegon IV was King. Aegon IV was King from 172AC until 184AC, placing the tourney in between these years. No further specification can be given.

Tourney at Lannisport

The tourney in Lannisport took place "many years" before the tourney at King's Landing (see one subtitle below), which took place in 193AC.

Though it is unknown how much years are meant by "many years", it is certain that at least two years had passed between the tourney in Lannisport and the tourney in King's Landing.

The tourney at Lannisport thus took place in 191 AC or before.

Tourney at King's Landing

This tourney took place 16 years prior to the events in the Hedge Knight. The events from the Hedge Knights took place in 209 AC (see Dunk & Egg (The Hedge Knight)). The tourney in King's Landing thus took place 16 years prior to 209AC, placing the tourney in 193 AC.

Hastilude for Lord Baratheon's grandson

The hastilude was held 9 years prior to the events in the Hedge Knight. The events from the Hedge Knights took place in 209 AC (see Dunk & Egg (The Hedge Knight)). That plaves the hastilude in 200 AC.

Tourney at King's Landing

Tourney at Ashford Meadows

The tourney at Ashford Meadows is described in The Hedge Knight. The events described in The Hedge Knight all take place in 209 AC, including the tourney at Ashford Meadows. See also Dunk & Egg (The Hedge Knight))

200 AC - 300 AC

Tourney in King's Landing

It is mentioned in 298 AC that 4 years prior, Barristan was champion at a tourney. This places said tourney in 294AC. A year before 298 AC, Barristan unhorsed the Hound. This would place said tourney in 297AC.

Tourney at Lannisport (for Aerys)

Cersei Lannister was 10 years old during this tourney, Rhaegar Targaryen 17 and new to knighthood.[25] Since Cersei was born in 266 AC and Rhaegar in 259 AC, the tourney could have occurred in both 276 AC and 277 AC. No further specifications can be given

Note : Rhaegar was “17 and new to knighthood”, suggesting that he had turned 17 not that long ago, placing the tourney in 276 AC.

Tourney at Duskendale

In 300 AC a tourney in Duskendale is mentioned to have occurred 6 years prior,[25] placing it in 294 AC

Tourney

Tywin Lannister organized a tourney 3 years prior to 298 AC, placing this tourney in 295 AC.[26]. Once there, Robert got a girl pregnant, and she bore him twins. The children were killed. Depending on the timing of the tourney, the twins were born in either 295 AC or 296 AC.

Marriages & Betrothals

Betrothals

Catelyn Tully’s betrothal to Brandon Stark

Catelyn Tully was 12 years old when she was betrothed to Brandon Stark.[27] With Catelyns birth in 264AC (see the Catelyn Tully calculation), she would have been 12 years old in both 276AC and 277AC. Her betrothal to Brandon Stark took place during one of these two years.

Elia Martell's betrothal to Rhaegar Targaryen

Elia Martell was betrothed to Rhaegar Targaryen after Steffon Baratheon and his wife died on the way back to Westeros. Steffon and his wife had three children. The youngest, Renly, was born in 277 AC (see the Renly Baratheonn calculation). Steffon and Cassana thus would have left after Renly's birth the earliest. Since Renly is 21 years old during the first half of 299 AC, and he would have been turning 22 had he lived the full year, it seems that Steffon and Cassana would not have left in early 277AC, but somewhere halfway through 277AC the earliest.

Note: It is highly unlikely that Cassana would have gone on a journey immediately after having given birth. It seems most likely that she was given a period of at least a few weeks to recover from Renly's birth. However, this is not stated in text, and thus Renly's birth is the minimum that has to be used in the calculations.

If Steffon and Cassana left in the second half of 277AC, they would have returned in 278AC (taking into account at least a journey of half a year, sailing to the Free Cities to find a bride for Rhaegar). This would place their deaths in 278AC the earliest (their journey could have been longer), which would make 278AC the first possibility for a betrothal between Elia and Rhaegar.

Rhaenys Targaryen, the firstborn child of Rhaegar and Elia, was 3 years old when she died in 283AC.[7][21] That means she was born in either 280AC (2 turning 3 in 283AC) or 279AC (3 turning 4 in 283AC). Since Tywin Lannister seems to have been unsure about whether or not Rhaenys was 2 or 3 years old at her death,[28] it seems most likely that Rhaenys had turned 3 in 283AC, not that long before the Sack.

The Sack of King's Landing occurred at least 9 months into 283AC, since Catelyn Tully mentions that Eddard Stark was still fighting in the war in the south after the birth of Robb Stark,[27] and Robb Stark was conceived in early 283AC (though it cannot be said how early, he was conceived after the Battle of the Bells in 283AC).

With Rhaenys' birth closely on the Sack (though it cannot be stated how closely), it seems likely that her conception had occurred around the turning of the years 279AC to 280AC. This makes it most likely that Elia and Rhaegar had been married in the later half of 279AC.

Elia and Rhaegar thus seem to have been betrothed between in either 278AC or 279AC.

Arianne Martell's betrothal to Viserys III Targaryen

Arianne Martell was betrothed to Viserys Targaryen while Viserys was living in Braavos with his sister Daenerys, and their protector, Ser Willam Darry. This occured shortly after Robert's Rebellion had ended in 283AC,[7] but before Willam Darry got sick. Willam Darry got sick when Daenerys Targaryen was 5 years old,[7] thus in either 289AC or 290AC (see the Daenerys Targaryen calculation).

The pact discussing the betrothal occured in Braavos.[29] Viserys, Daenerys and Willem Darry went to Braavos after Daenerys' birth in 284 AC (see the Daenerys Targaryen calculation). Earlier than 284AC the betrothal thus could not have taken place.

Arianne and Viserys were thus betrothed in or between 284 AC and 290 AC

Weddings

Elia Martell's wedding to Rhaegar Targaryen

Elia Martell was betrothed to Rhaegar Targaryen after Steffon Baratheon and his wife died on the way back to Westeros. Steffon and his wife had three children. The youngest, Renly, was born in 277 AC (see the Renly Baratheon calculation).

This would place their deaths in 278AC the earliest (their journey could have been longer), which would make 278AC the first possibility for a marriage between Elia and Rhaegar.

With Rhaenys' birth in 280AC, later into the year, the possibility of Rhaenys' conception, and thus also the wedding of Rhaegar and Elia, could have taken place in 280AC.

Elia and Rhaegar thus got married in either 278AC, 279AC or 280AC.

Catelyn Tully's wedding to Eddard Stark

In 298 AC, Catelyn Stark mentions that she had wed Ned 15 years prior.[3] That places their wedding in 283AC. In addition, Jon Connington mentions in 300 AC that the Battle of the Bells occurred 17 years prior,[13] placing the Battle of the Bells in 283 AC as well. Catelyn and Ned got married after the Battle of the Bells, confirming that their wedding occurred in 283AC.

Jon Arryn's wedding to Lysa Tully

Jon Arryn married Lysa Tully after his last heir died during the Battle of the Bells. According to Jon Connington, the Battle of the Bells occurred 17 years prior to 300 AC, placing the Battle of the Bells in 283AC. This means that Jon Arryn married Lysa Tully in 283AC.

Jon Arryn married Lysa Tully in the same ceremony as Ned Stark married Catelyn Tully. Catelyn Tully remarks that she married Ned Stark 15 years prior to 298 AC, confirming that the wedding occurred in 283AC[3]

Cersei Lannisters wedding to Robert Baratheon

The first child of Cersei and Robert, Joffrey, was born in 286 AC, in the first or second month. With a pregnancy lasting 9 months, Joffrey would thus have been conceived within the first half of 285AC. Cersei Lannister believes that Joffrey was conceived during a trip to Estermont, which lasted a fortnight. This visit was made after two of Roberts uncles had remained in King’s Landing for 6 months after Cersei’s wedding to Robert, meaning that there was at least 6 months in between Cersei’s wedding and Joffrey’s conception. With Joffrey’s conception taking place in the first half year, Cersei’s wedding took thus place in late 284 AC at the latest.

Cersei Lannsiter was 18 years old when she married Robert, and with her birth in 266 AC, that shows the wedding thus took place in either 284 AC or 285 AC.

Since it seems unlikely that Robert insisted on visiting his relatives immediately after they had left King's Landing, it is most likely that the wedding took place even earlier in the year. It can be assumed that the wedding did not take place before Dragonstone had been conquered. This occurred after the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, in the middle of the year.

Stannis Baratheons wedding to Selyse Florent

On the night of Stannis' wedding to Selyse, Stannis' brother Robert Baratheon deflowered Delena Florent, and fathered Edric Storm on her. Edric was born in 287 AC (see the Edric Storm calculation). It is unknown whether Edric was born in early or late 287 AC.

If Edric was born in late 287AC, it is possible that his conception also took place in 287AC. This would mean that Stannis got married to Selyse in 287AC. If Edric was born in early 287AC, Edric would have been conceived in 286AC. This would mean that Stannis got married to Selyse in 286AC.

No specification can be given on this. Stannis and Selyse thus either married in 286 AC or 287 AC.

Walder Frey's wedding to Perra Royce

Walders first child with Perra was born in either 233AC or 234AC (see Stevron Frey). This means that 234AC, the last possible year of Stevron's birth, is also the last possible year the marriage could have taken place.

Walder Frey was born in 208AC (see Walder Frey). He would have reached the age of marriage, 13 year, in 221AC. This is thus the first possible year of Walders marriage to Perra, Walder's first wife.

Walder and Perra thus married in or between 221 AC and 234 AC.

Walder and Perra had four children together. Stevron was born in either 233AC or 234AC (see Stevron Frey), Emmon was born in 239AC (see Emmon Frey), Aenys in or between 240AC and 247AC (see Aenys Frey), and Perriane in or between 241AC and 248AC (see Perriane Frey).

This shows that the marriage between Walder and Perra would have lasted at least until 241AC, and at the latest until 248AC.

Walder and Perra were thus married in between 234AC and 241AC (Stevrons's last possible year of birth until Perriane's first possible year of birth), though their marriage could have taken place anywhere in between the years 221AC and 248AC.

Walder Frey's wedding to Cyrenna Swann

Walders first child with Cyrenna was born in either 248AC or 249AC (see Jared Frey). This means that 249AC, the last possible year of Jareds birth, is also the last possible year the marriage could have taken place.

Walder's previous marriage, to Perra Royce, would have ended after the birth of his youngest child with her. Perriane was born in 241AC the earliest (see Perriane Frey). This shows that Perra would have died in 241AC the earliest, and Walder thus could have married Cyrenna in 241AC the earliest.

Walder and Cyrenna thus married in or between 241AC and 248AC.

Walder and Cyrenna had two children: Jared, born in either 248AC or 249AC (see Jared Frey), and Luceon, born in or between 249AC and 257AC (see Luceon Frey).

With Luceons birth no earlier than 249AC, the marriage of Walder and Cyrenna lasted at least until 249AC

With Walders first child with his third wife born in 258AC the latest (see Hosteen Frey), 258AC is thus the last possible year for Cyrenna to have died.

Walders marriage to Cyrenna thus ended in 258AC the absolute latest.

Walder and Cyrenna were thus married in 249AC (Jared's last possible year of birth, Luceons first possible year of birth), though their marriage could have taken place anywhere in between the years 241AC and 258AC.

Walder Frey's wedding to Amarei Crakehall

Walders first child with Amarei was born in or between 250AC and 258AC (see Hosteen Frey). This means that 258AC, the last possible year of Hosteens birth, is also the last possible year the marriage could have taken place.

Walders previous marriage, to Cyrenna Swann, would have ended after the birth of his youngest child with her. Luceon was born in 249AC the earliest (see Luceon (Frey)). This shows that Cyrenna would have died in 249AC the earliest, and Walder thus could have married Amarei in 249AC the earliest.

Walder and Amarei thus married in or between 249AC and 258AC.

Walder and Amarei had seven children: Hosteen, born in or between 250AC and 258AC (see Hosteen Frey), Lythene, born in or between 251AC and 259AC (see Lythene Frey), Symond, born in or between 252AC and 260AC (see Symond Frey), Danwell, born in or between 252AC and 261AC (see Danwell Frey), Merrett, born in 262AC (see Merrett Frey), Geremy, born in 263AC (see Geremy Frey), and Raymund, born in 264AC (see Raymund Frey).

With Walder and Amarei's last child, Raymund, born in 264AC, the marriage of Walder and Amarei lasted at least until 264AC.

In fact, it is known that their marriage ended in 264AC with the death of Amarei, as Walder Frey states to Catelyn Tully that Amarei had died before Catelyn herself had been born. As Catelyn Tully was born in 264AC (see Catelyn Tully), and Amarei's youngest child was born in 264AC as well, Geremy was thus born before Catelyn Tully in the year, and Amarei's death also occured before Catelyn's birth in the year.

Walder and Amarei were thus married in between 258AC and 264AC (Hosteen's last possible year of birth, Raymunds only possible year of birth), though their marriage could have begun anywhere in between the years 249AC and 258AC.

Walder Frey's wedding to Alyssa Blackwood

Walders first child with Alyssa was born in either 265AC or 266AC (see Lother Frey). This means that 266AC, the last possible year of Lothars birth, is also the last possible year the marriage could have taken place. Walders previous marriage, to Amarei Crakehall, would have ended after the birth of his youngest child with her. Raymund was born in 264AC (see Raymund Frey). Since Amarei died in 264AC (see Amarei Crakehall), Walder wedding to Alyssa could have taken place in 264AC the earliest.

Walder and Alyssa thus married in or between 264AC and 266AC.

Walder and Alyssa had five children: Lothar, born in either 265AC or 266AC (see Lother Frey), Jammos, born in either 266AC or 267AC (see Jammos Frey), Whalen, born in either 267AC or 268AC (see Whalen Frey), Morya, born in either 268AC or 269AC (see Morya Frey), and Tyta, born in either 269AC or 270AC (see Tyta Frey)

With Walder and Alyssa's last child, Tyta, born in 269AC the earliest, the marriage of Walder and Alyssa lasted at least until 269AC.

Walders next child, born after Tyta, was born in 278AC the latest (see Perwyn Frey). This means that potentially, Walders marriage to Alyssa could have lasted until 278AC.

Walder Frey's wedding to Sarya Whent

Walder and Sarya had no children.

Sarya was the fifth wife of Walder Frey. With Walders youngest child with his fourth wife born in 269AC the earliest (see Tyta Frey), and his eldest child by his sixth wife born in 278AC the latest (see Perwyn Frey), Walders marriage to Sarya could have taken place between any of those two years.

Walder Frey and Sarya Whent were thus married in or between 269AC and 278AC maximally.

Walder Frey's wedding to Bethany Rosby

Walder Frey's wedding to Annara Farring

Walder Frey's wedding to Joyeuse Erenford

Lord Walder is said to be marrying his eight wife on his 90th nameday.[30] Walder was born in 208 AC (see the Walder Frey calculation), which means that Walder would have been turning 90 in 298AC. This places his wedding to Joyeuse in 298 AC.

Namedays

For a select amount of characters, the placing of their birth into the year can be roughly specified:

Placing in the year

Brandon (Bran) Stark

Bran is still 7 years old when he falls from the tower window.[31] After he has woken up from his coma, he is mentioned to be 8 years old.[32] It is unknown whether Brans nameday occured during his coma, or in the time afterwards, as Bran, when the passing of his nameday has been mentioned, has been awake for an unknown amount of time.

The amount of time until Brans fall can be determined:

  • Joffrey's nameday, which occured between 0.3 months and 2 months into the year.
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies, due to the unknown length of the journey of the raven carrying the letter to Winterfell, the first day of counting of the courts journey.[19]
  • + 2 months : court travels from King's Landing to Winterfell (see Note 1 below)
  • 0,6 month : "a few days"[27] + "a fortnight"[27] pass until Bran's fall.

This makes Bran's fall occur no earlier than 3,1 month into the year, showing that his nameday definitly occured later than those 3,1 months.

Cersei Lannister

See Jaime Lannister below.

Jaime Lannister

It is mentioned that has been 18 years since Jaime Lannister joined the Kingsguard in 299AC.[33] This is mentioned after the Battle of the Blackwater. With the first day of the first month of 300AC being a known event, it can be determined how much time passes minimally between this mentioning, and the end of the year.

  • +1 day : Between the conversation that Tyrion Lannister has with Tywin Lannister (the first mentioning of the 18 years since Jaime joined the Kingsguard), at least one day takes place before Tyrion sees Shae.[34]
  • +1 day : Tyrion II (where the sighting of Shae is mentioned), takes place a day later.[34] (Ser Loras 17)
  • +1 day : It is unknown when the Small Council meeting during Tyrion III takes place, and it might even be during the same day as Tyrion II (though that is unlikey). Petyr Baelish mentions that he can leave the day after the council meeting "the next morning" the earliest. So 1 day is added until Petyr Baelish leaves for the Eyrie.
  • +1 month : In Tyrion IV, it is mentioned that it has been a fortnight since Petyr Baelish set sail for the Eyrie. However, during this fortnight, at an unknown moment, Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark got married. Since it is known that at least 30 days pass between the wedding and the first day of 300AC (see Sansa Stark's nameday placing entry below), and since it is unknown whether Petyr Baelish leaves on the wedding day of Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark, or days or weeks later, it is possible that the mentioning of Petyr Baelish having left 14 days age completely falls in the minimal 30 days of the marriage.

With a minimum time passing of 33 days (1 moon and 3 days), it can be said that Jaime's nameday does not fall in the 12th month of the year, but that his nameday falls in any of the first 11 months of the year.

In 300AC, it is mentioned again that is has been 18 years since Jaime had joined the Kingsguard.[9] Though it is known that the trial of Tyrion Lannister has begun, it is known that Tyrion's trial has lasted for at least 2 days, since Jaime has "spend his days" at Tyrion's trial.

Counting from the first day of the year:

  • +1 : Joffrey and Margaery wed on the first day of 300AC.
  • +2 : Cersei has more witnesses "every day", suggesting a passing of at least 2 days between Joffrey's wedding, and the day on which Tyrion is told such by Kevan Lannister.
  • +4 : Kevan Lannister returns to speak with Tyrion Lannister the next day (1). He mentions the trial will start in three days (3). 1 day + 3 days = 4 days.
  • +2 : when Jaime mentions the 18 years since he had been 15, Tyrion's trial has been going on for at least 2 days.

Adding these minimal numbers, at least 9 days have passed, while it seems most likely that quite some time passes between the start of the trial, and Joffrey's actual wedding day (more than the minimum of 6 now given). However, such passing of time isn't stated in text, and can thus not be specified.

All that can be said, is that Jaime's nameday does not fall in the first 9 days of the year.

No further specification can be given.

Joffrey Baratheon

It is known that Joffrey Baratheon's nameday does not occur on the first day of the year, as Joffrey would be turning 14 in 300AC, and he is still 13 years old on the first day of the first month of the year 300AC.

That gives the following:

  • Joffrey Baratheon's nameday, occuring on an unknown day in the year
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies, due to the unknown length of the journey of the raven carrying the letter to Winterfell, the first day of counting of the courts journey.[19]
  • + 2 months : court travels from King's Landing to Winterfell (see Note 1 below)
  • +1 month : "a few days"[27] + "a fortnight"[27] + "close to a fortnight"[35] is the length of the stay of the royal court at Winterfell
  • +24 days : the journey to the Wall lasts longer than 18 days (Wall cannot be seen yet on the 18th day),[36] yet can be travelled within a moons turn (30 days).[37] 24 days is the average of this.
  • 4 days : Benjen Stark leaves 4 days after arriving at the Wall.[38]
  • + 5,5 months : "Benjen Stark has left us close on half a year ago".[39] By this time, the news of Robert Baratheon's death has reached the Wall. Robert dies in 298AC (see Robert Baratheon). As it appears that the royal court has send the letter to the Wall, it can be assumed that the news reaches the Wall reasonably soon after Robert's death.

Robert's death is the last event that can be stated with certainty to have occured in 298AC.

Adding these time frames adds up to 10 months. Since it is unknown how many days remain in the year 298AC after King Roberts death, it can only be said that Joffrey Baratheon's nameday occurs in the first two months of the year.

Further specification can be given.

  • 1 : The visit of Robb Stark, Catelyn Tully and the northern army at the Twins occurs in 299AC. Potentially, this event could have occured on the first day of the year.
  • +1 : The news of Roose Bolton moving south from the Twins reaches the Lannister army at least one day later.
  • +1 : The Battle of the Green Fork occurs a day after the news has arrived.
  • +5 : After the Battle of the Green Fork, the Battle at Riverrun occurs. Upon hearing that Jaime Lannister was captured there, Tyrion Lannister states "Robb Stark had reached Riverrun days and days ago". Days and days suggests a multitude of days, and thus a minimum of 4. The news about the outcome of the battle would have taken at least (though most likely more than) one day to reach the Lannister army. This day, Tyrion is send to King's Landing.
  • +1 : It cannot be specified how long it took Tyrion to reach King's Landing, so only a minimum of one day can be given. Tyrion arrives on Joffrey's 13th nameday.

This shows that Joffrey's nameday cannot take place any earlier than the 9th day of the year.

Joffrey's nameday thus takes place between the 9th day of the first month (thus at least 0,3 month into the year), and the last day of the second month.

No further specifications can be given.

Jon Snow

The placement of Jon's nameday can be roughly determined.

It is known that Joffrey Baratheon was born in 286AC (see Joffrey Baratheon). It is also known that Joffrey Baratheons nameday is not the first day of the year, as it is not his nameday upon the day of his wedding.

That gives the following minimum:

  • Joffrey Baratheons nameday, occuring on an unknown day at least 0,3 month into the year
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies, due to the unknown length of the journey of the raven carrying the letter to Winterfell, the first day of counting of the courts journey.[19]
  • +9+9 days (0,6 month) : the journey of Ser Waymar Royce, Gared and Will had taken 9 days, and they still had 8 or 9 days to go until they reached the Wall again. Benjen Stark would have known their route, and would most likely have counted an additional couple of days to investigate. The minimum of Benjens ranging would thus have been 9+9= 18 days, though in reality his ranging would have taken longer
  • +14 days : Benjen Stark had promised to be back by Jon Snows nameday, but a fortnight after his nameday, Benjen Stark still hadn't returned.

Adding these time frames adds up to 5,9 months.

However, Joffrey Baratheon's nameday could have occured further in the year. In addition, Benjen Stark might have calculated more for his ranging initially. The 5,6 months is the absolute minimum of time having passed in the year for Jon Snows nameday to take place. With the knowledge that Joffrey Baratheons nameday does occur in the beginning of the year, the most precise that can be stated is that Jon Snows nameday seems to take place in the middle of the year.

No further specifications can be given.

Lancel Lannister

Lancel was born in 282AC. In 298AC, he would thus be 15 turning 16. During the Tourney of the Hand, Eddard Stark notes that Lancel is 15 years old.[40]

The minimum passage of time is the following:

  • Joffrey Baratheon's nameday, occuring on an unknown day of the year, at least 0,3 month into the year
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies
  • +2 months : the royal court travels from King's Landing to Winterfell (see Note 1 below)
  • +1 month : "a few days"[27] + "a fortnight"[27] + "close to a fortnight"[35] is the length of the stay of the royal court at Winterfell
  • +2 months : the royal court and Winterfells court travel from Winterfell back to King's Landing (see Note 1 below)
  • + 14 days : Catelyn Tully meets participants of the Tourney after traveling away from King's Landing for a fortnight. Catelyn could have left the earliest the day the court had arrived in King's Landing. The tourney still hasn't begun.

An unknown amount of time passes between Catelyn meeting the last participant on the kingsroad, and the start of the tourney, so this time cannot be taken into the calculation.

The specified time added together gives a passed time of 6,3 months. This means that at least 6,3 months into the year, Lancels nameday still hasn't occured, showing that Lancels nameday falls in the last 5,7 months of the year.

Margaery Tyrell

With the knowledge that Margaery's birth took place in 283AC, the placing of her nameday in the year can be roughly determined.

Margaery is mentioned to be 14 years old at two occasions, and both those occasions occur during the Tourney of the Hand in 298AC.[41][42]. With Margaery's birth having occured in 283AC, Margaery would thus be 14 turning 15 in 298AC. This means that during the Tourney of the Hand, Margaery's nameday had not yet occured.

That gives us the following time that can be specified until the mentioning of Maegaery being 14:

This means that at least 6,3 months into the year, Margaery's nameday still hasn't occured.

When Margaery arrives in King's Landing in 299AC, she has already turned 16. Though it seems obvious that Margaery has been in King's Landing for quite some time when the day of Sansa's wedding arrives, only a few days can be counted with certainty.

  • +1 : Maegaery arrives in King's Landing, aged 16
  • +1 : No sooner than one day after Margaery's arrival, though most likely some time later, Sansa Stark receives an invitation for lunch with Margaery.
  • +2 : "when the appointed day arrived" suggests that the invitation arrived at least more than the day before the lunch itself, giving a minimum of 2 days.
  • +1 : Sansa Stark goes hawking with Margaery and Margaery's cousins. This occurs no sooner than one day after the lunch.
  • +2 : "the day before last" Margaery and her cousins had taken Sansa Stark hawking. Between the hawking and Sansa thinking about it, 2 days have passed. Sansa's wedding gown is ordered

The next mentioning of time, is Sansa's own wedding day. This shows that the time between Margaery's arrival in King's Landing and Sansa Stark's wedding is at least 7 days (though it seems quite obvious that in reality, more time has passed). It is known that between Sansa Stark's wedding and the first day of the first month of 300AC, at least 30 days go by (see Sansa Stark).

Added up together, Margaery was thus 16 years old for at least the last 1,25 month of 299AC, showing that Margaery's nameday occurs before these 1,25 month.

With the knowledge that Margaery's nameday still has to occur 6,3 months into the year, but has already occured by the last 1,25 month of the year, it can be stated that Margaery's nameday occured no earlier than the 9th day of the 6th month, and no later than the last third week in the 11th month.

No further specifications can be given.

Myrcella Baratheon

When visiting Winterfell, during the feast to welcome the King to the North, Myrcella is still 7, while she would turn 8 later in the year. The feast occurs at least 2,8 months into the year:

  • Joffrey Baratheon's nameday, occuring on an unknown day of the year, at least 0,3 month into the year
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies
  • +2 months : the royal court travels from King's Landing to Winterfell (see Note 1 below)

This shows that Myrcella's nameday occurs more than 2,8 months into the year. No further specifications can be given.

Petyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish was born in 268AC. Catelyn Tully notes that he is still "shy of 30" when she sees him in King's Landing. Though it is unknown how long Catelyn's journey from Winterfell to King's Landing takes, a minimum passage of time can be stated:

  • Joffrey Baratheon's nameday, occuring on an unknown day of the year, at least 0,3 month into the year
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies
  • +2 months : the royal court travels from King's Landing to Winterfell (see Note 1 below)
  • +1 month : "a few days"[27] + "a fortnight"[27] + "close to a fortnight"[35] is the length of the stay of the royal court at Winterfell
  • +8+4 days : "Ned and the girls had been 8 days gone" + "she had slept for four days"[43] is the time that had passed since the court had left Winterfell, until Catelyn wakes up from the attack on Bran.
  • +1 : The earliest Catelyn can leave for King's Landing is the next day after waking up
  • +1 : The journey would have taken at least one day

Thus at least 4 months had passed until Catelyn and Petyr met. With Petyrs nameday not having passed yet in the year, that shows that Petyrs nameday will have taken place in or between the 5th and 12th month of the year.

Rickon Stark

Rickon's nameday had already passed by the time the direwolves were found, as he was already 3 years old, with his birth occuring in 295AC. It is known that Joffrey Baratheon's nameday had already occured by then, as the day the direwolves were found is the same day as the news on Jon Arryn's death, occuring a fortnight after Joffrey's nameday, reaches Winterfell. With the knowledge that Joffrey Baratheons birth does not occur in the first day of the year, it can be stated that a minimum of 15 days has already passed (though that is without taking the ravens journey into account, a journey whose length has not been stated).

That gives the following:

  • Joffrey Baratheons nameday, occuring on an unknown day in the year, at least 0,3 month into the year.
  • + 14 days : Jon Arryn dies, due to the unknown length of the journey of the raven carrying the letter to Winterfell, the first day of counting of the courts journey.[19] This is potentially the first day on which the mentioning of Rickon being 3 is made. The count begins here.
  • + 5,5 months : "Benjen Stark has left us close half a year ago".[39] By this time, the news of Robert Baratheon's death has reached the Wall. Robert dies in 298AC (see Robert Baratheon). As it appears that the royal court has send the letter to the Wall, it can be assumed that the news reaches the Wall reasonably soon after Robert's death.

The death of Robert Baratheon is the last event that can be said to have occured in the year 298AC with certainty.

Adding these time frames adds up to 9,8 months. This shows that Rickons nameday occurs within the first 2,2 months of the year. No further specifications can be given.

Robb Stark

Robb Starks parents got married in 283AC (see weddings (Catelyn Tully & Eddard Stark)). With Robb's birth also occuring in 283AC, as calculated above, Robb's birth will have occured in either the 10th, 11th or 12th month of the year, as pregnancies last 9 months.

As between the wedding of Sansa Stark to Tyrion Lannister in 299AC and the first day of 300AC at least 30 days pass (see Sansa Stark), and Robb Stark has turned 16 prior to that,[44], it can be stated that Robb Starks birth occured in either the 10th month or the 11th month. With reasonable certainty it can even be stated that Robb Starks nameday occured closer to the first day of the 10th month, than to the 30th day of the 11th month.

Robert Arryn

With the knowledge that Robert was born in 292AC, the placing of his nameday can be roughly determined. Robert is 8 years old in early 300AC. The time that has passed in the year, at the moment of the observation (made by Robert's mother), is as followed:

  • A journey by ship from King's Landing to the Fingers, lasting an unspecified amount of time
    • Comparing the distance given between Old Wyk and Lonely Light, which is a known journey of 8 days sailing,[7] the journey from King's Landing to the Fingers seems to be between 3 and 4 times as long, placing this journey in between 24 and 32 days.
  • 8 days spend at the Fingers, until Lysa Tully arrives
  • 1 day since Lysa Tully's arrival

It is known the journey starts on the first day of the first month of 300AC.

Using the maximum amount of days of time that could have passed, it can be stated that Robert's nameday has taken place by the 41th day of the year. This places Robert's nameday in the first or second month of the year.

Robert Frey (son of Raymund)

With Robert's birth occuring in 283AC, Raymund would not have named his son such while the Rebellion was being fought, as the main opponent of House Targaryen was named Robert Baratheon. Seeing as House Frey joined the rebels only after the Battle of the Trident, which occured in the second half of 283AC, Robert Frey was most likely born after the Battle of the Trident, and thus in the second half of 283AC.

Sansa Stark

With Sansa stating upon her wedding night that she will be turning 13 within a time window of 30 days,[45] and with the knowledge that between Sansa's wedding and the Red Wedding about 30 days occur, and between the Red Wedding and the first day of 300AC roughly a fortnight, it can be stated that Sansa's nameday occurs in either the 11th or the 12th month of the year.

No further specifications can be given.

Tommen Baratheon

Tommen Baratheon was born in 291AC. At the tourney to celebrate Joffrey Baratheon's 13th nameday, Tommen has already turned 8.[46] Since Joffrey Baratheon's nameday occurs at least 0,3 month into the year, and no later than the last day of the second month, as can be seen above, Tommens nameday thus takes place within that timeframe as well.

Though no further specification can be given, it can be stated that Tommens nameday occurs before Joffrey's.

Walder Frey

When Catelyn Tully arrests Tyrion Lannister in 298AC, Walder Frey's 90th nameday has yet to occur.

This gives a minimum passage of time of 6,3 months when the mentioning of Walder's age occurs. This shows that Walder's nameday does not occur in the first 6,3 months of the year.

Walder has turned 91 by the time Catelyn Tully and Robb Stark (and his army) arrive at the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. The wedding occurs that same day, and news on the events that occured during the wedding could have reached King's Landing no sooner than 2 days later, as the fighting lasted into the night, the raven would have been send the next day as soon as possible, and would have flown at least one day (though obviously, such a journey would take longer, yet no specifications can be given) before reaching King's Landing. When the raven arrives at King's Landing, Joffrey Baratheon seems to believe there is still time for a raven to fly from King's Landing to the Twins, and for a rider to ride from the Twins to King's Landing before the year 300AC begins. While it is uncertain whether or not Joffrey took any traveling time into account, it can be stated with reasonable certainty that this means that Joffrey's wedding day, and thus the first day of 300AC, would not be taking place over the next few days. Therefor, a minimum of 2 weeks is established as passing between the Red Wedding and the first day of 300AC (though it could be more in reality).

Thus it can be stated that Walder's nameday does not take place in the second half of the 12th month.

Walder's nameday thus takes place in between 6,3th and 11,5th month of the year.

Notes

Note 1

Journey from King's Landing to Winterfell/Winterfell to King's Landing The journey that the royal court takes from King's Landing to Winterfell in 298AC takes roughly 2 months:

  • From the Trident to King's Landing takes a fortnight, 14 days,[47]
  • Crossing the Neck takes 12 days[48]
  • The length of the kingsroad from Winterfell to King's Landing,[49] minus the length of the Neck (12 days), minus the distance between King's Landing and the Trident (14 days), leaves a distance roughly a little bit more than twice the size as the distance between King's Landing and the Trident, and can thus be said will take a bit more than twice as much time to cover (2x14 days + a few days, here guessed as 5), making the total amount of time 14+14+14+12+5= 57 days roughly). This is stated in the calculations above as 2 months.

Miscellaneous

At the Wall

Will's arrival at the Wall

Will has been on the Wall in 297AC for 4 years, meaning he joined the Night’s Watch in 293 AC.[2]

Waymar Royce’s arrival at the Wall

Ser Waymar Royce has been on the Wall for less than half a year during the prologue in A Game of Thrones, which takes place in 297AC.[2]. During the Hand's tourney in 298 AC, Sansa Stark remarks how Waymar had visited Winterfell on his way to the Wall.[1] She remembers as this visit having been two years prior to the tourney. With the Tourney taking place in the middle of the year 298 AC, Ser Waymar’s visit to Winterfell took place halfway through 296AC, roughly.

The North

Eddard Starks fostering in the Vale

Eddard Stark was 8 years old when he was send to be fostered at the Eyrie.[27] Eddard was born in either 262AC or 263AC (see the Eddard Stark calculation), which creates the possibility of having been 8 in the following years:

  • If born in 262AC
    • 7 turing 8 in 270AC
    • 8 turning 9 in 271AC
  • If born in 263AC
    • 7 turning 8 in 271AC
    • 8 turning 9 in 272AC

No further specification can be given. Eddard thus went to the Eyrie in either 270 AC, 271 AC or 272 AC.

Rodrik Cassel's mother

Ser Rodrik mentions in 298 AC that his mother had been dead for 40 years[50], placing her death roughly around 258 AC.

The Riverlands

Blackfish

When Catelyn Tully was 8 years old, Hoster called Brynden a “black goat”, causing Brynden to point out their house sigil was a trout, and named himself the Blackfish ever since.[51] Since Catelyn Tully was born in 264 AC, this event occurred in either 272 AC or 273 AC.

Petyr Baelish's duel against Brandon Stark

Petyr Baelish was 14 years[52] old during the duel. With Petyr's birth in 268AC, he would have been 13 turning 14 in 282AC and 14 turning 15 in 283AC. Since Brandon Stark died in 282AC[53], the duel thus could only have taken place in 282AC.

Hoster Tully

Hoster Tully is said to have been bedridden “these past two years” in 298 AC.[30] This statement is made roughly halfway through 298 AC, placing the moment Hoster got sick halfway in 296AC.

The Westerlands

Gerion Lannister’s voyage

Gerion Lannister left Lannisport when Tyrion Lannister was 18 years old.[54] Tyrion was born in either 272AC or 273AC, meaning he was 18 years old in both 292AC and 293AC. Gerion’s ship left in 292/293AC.

Gregor Clegane's knighthood

Four years after Sandor’s “accident”, Gregor was knighted. Sandor was 6 or 7 during the incident with the fire, meaning that Gregor would have been either 11 or 12 years old at the time, being 5 years older. Gregor was knighted 4 years after the incident, placing his age during his knighting at either 16 or 17. Gregor would have been either 16 or 17 in:

  • Gregor would have been 15 turning 16 in 281AC if he was born in 265AC
  • Gregor would have been 16 turning 17 in 282AC if he was born in 265AC
  • Gregor would have been 15 turning 16 in 282AC if he was born in 266AC
  • Gregor would have been 16 turning 17 in 283AC if he was born in 266AC

It is known Gregor was knighted by Rhaegar Targaryen.[1] Since Rhaegar had been missing during Robert’s Rebellion (282AC – 283AC), the last option (16 turning 17 in 283AC if born in 266AC) can be eliminated, since Gregor’s knighting will not have taken place during the Rebellion. Also, Rhaegar was missing for most of the part of the year 283AC where the Rebellion was still being fought, and he and Gregor were on opposite sides of the conflict when Rhaegar did reappear. 16 turning 27 in 283AC can thus be eliminated.

This means that Gregor was knighted either in 281AC or 282AC (in the months before the war began).

Sandor Clegane's "accident"

Sandor was 6 or 7 years old when Gregor pushed his face in the fire.[1] With Sandor’s birth taking place in either 270AC or 271AC, he would have been either 6 or 7 in the following years: • Born in 270AC, Sandor would be 5 turning 6 in 276AC • Born in 270AC, Sandor would be 6 turning 7 in 277AC • Born in 270AC, Sandor would be 7 turning 8 in 278AC • Born in 271AC, Sandor would be 5 turning 6 in 277AC • Born in 271AC, Sandor would be 6 turning 7 in 278AC • Born in 271AC, Sandor would be 7 turning 8 in 279AC It can be concluded that this “accident” thus took place in either 276AC, 277AC, 278AC or 279AC. No further specifications can be given. Sandor’s first kill: Sandor killed a man when he was 12 years old.[55][56] With his birth having been in either 270AC or 271AC, he would have been 12 years old in either 282AC, 283AC or 284AC. Further specification cannot be given. Note: Sandor could have been 12 years old in 283AC with both possible birth years. It is possible, and perhaps highly likely, that Sandor killed his first man during the Rebellion, that lasted a big part of 283AC, and began in 282AC. In that case, a birth year of 270AC might be favoured, though this cannot be said with certainty.

The Vale

Death of Lord Baelish

In 298 AC, it is mentioned that Petyrs father had died several years earlier[50], indicating that he has been dead for at least 2 years. That means that Petyr became Lord Baelish in truth in 286AC or before.

The Crownlands

Hugh "of the Vale"

At the time of his death, Hugh had been Jon Arryn’s squire for the past 4 years,[40] meaning that Hugh became Jon Arryn’s squire in 294AC.

Pycelle becoming Grandmaester

Pycelle tells Eddard Stark that he has been Grandmaester for near on 40 years in 298 AC.[57] With Pycelle’s birth in 216AC, and with Pycelle having been 42 when he became Grandmaester during the reign of Aegon V, Pycelle would have turned 42 in 258AC. However, with it having been near 40 years, and not simply 40 years, in 298 AC, Pycelle did not become Grandmaester in 258AC, when he had turned 42, but a year later, in 259AC, when he was still 42 (though he would be turning 43 later that year).

Essos

Jon Connington's time with the Golden Company

Jon Connington is mentioned to have left the Golden Company a dozen years ago in 300 AC. Later, this is specified as to actually have been 12 years,[13] placing Jon’s “exile” from the Golden Company in 288 AC, five years after the Rebellion ended. Jon Connnigton had spend five years with the Golden Company.[13] For him to have spend five years with the Golden Company while 283 AC is the first moment he could have joined, and 288 AC is the year he certainly left, it shows that he joined the Golden Company shortly after his exile began, in 283 AC.

Jorah Mormont's exile

In 298 AC, Ned Stark remarks how it has been 5 years since Jorah Mormont went into exile, meaning that Jorah went into exile in 293AC.[58]
