When Aeron is held captive by his brother, King Euron Crow's Eye, in the hold of Silence, Euron confesses to Aeron that he killed Harlon by pinching his nose shut. Greyscale had turned Harlon's mouth to stone, preventing him from calling for help or breathing through his mouth.[3]

Behind the Scenes

Harlon may have been named by George R. R. Martin as an homage to author Harlan Ellison. Harlon's affliction of the greyscale rendering him incapable of screaming may refer to Ellison's short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. Martin made a eulogy post on his blog after Ellison's passing in June 2018 where he details his personal and professional relationship with Ellison.[4]
