The '''Old Gods''' of the [[children of the forest]], are nameless deities of stone and earth and tree, which were named so by the followers of the [[Faith of the Seven|Seven]]("New Gods") that replaced them in all but [[Westeros#The North|North of Westeros]], where it's still practiced strongly by [[Northmen]], [[Crannogmen]] and [[Free Folk]] from Beyond the wall.

The old gods seem like a sort of animistic religion. The [[greenseer]]s of the children, shamans of a kind, were said to be able to talk with all beasts and birds, and to see through the eyes of their carved [[weirwood]]s and posses strong magic. There are no priests, no holy texts, no songs of worship, and practically no rites that go with the worship of the old gods. It’s a folk-religion, passed from generation to generation. The closest thing to a ritual we’ve seen is prayer before the heart tree in a godswood, holy groves contained within castles throughout the Seven Kingdoms, and often the only places where living weirwoods still remain until one goes north of the Wall. [[Weirwood]] trees with faces carved into them, called heart trees, are considered sacred. Prayer, oaths, and marriages are often performed in the presence of a heart tree. The faces were carved into the weirwoods by the children of the forest, but their meaning or purpose is not completely understood by humans. Once all noble houses had a godswood with a heart tree in its center, but many families that no longer follow the Old Gods have converted their godswoods into secular gardens. It's said that the old gods only have power where the heart tree faces can see, and since the destruction of most of the heart trees in the south they have no power there.

Various actions, such as incest{{Ref|aCoK|34}}, kinslaying{{Ref|aCoK|52}} and Slavery{{Ref|aSoS|24}}, are considered offensive to the gods. while laws of hospitality are respected{{Ref|aSoS|57}}

== History ==
The Old Gods were originally worshipped by the [[Children of the forest]] in all of [[Westeros]] since before first recorded history, thousands of years before the arrival of the [[First Men]] from the east. The First Men warred with the children, and cut down the weirwoods where they found them. In time, the First Men [[Pact|made peace]] with children of the forest and adopted children of the forest's gods.

Worship of the Old Gods remained strong across Westeros until [[Andal Invasion]], who brought their [[Faith of the Seven]] with them from the east. The Andals gradually
conquered the south of Westeros, cutting down the weirwoods supplanting the worship of the Old Gods with their own. However, in the North the Old gods remained strong to this and is still worshiped by the [[wildlings]] [[beyond the Wall]].

The new castle, [[Deep Lake]], was paid for by the queen's jewels and built by men that King [[Jaehaerys I]] sent north. The inhabitants are called the Thenn. [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] arrives outside the council chambers, and has to threaten Ser [[Mandon Moore]] in order to get in. He shows [[Cersei Lannister|the Queen]] [[Tywin Lannister|their father]]’s letter proclaiming Tyrion acting [[Hand of the King]]. Cersei is disturbed by Tyrion’s presence, and rants that her father should have returned with his army. Tyrion asks for a word alone with his sister, and the other counselors leave.

Alone, Tyrion learns that Cersei only has [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] captive. [[Arya Stark|Arya]] escaped and is presumed dead. He then asks her if she trusts the [[small council]], because their father does not. [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]’s short reign has been full of follies and disasters. He learns that Joffrey was instructed to allow [[Eddard Stark]] to take the black, but he took it upon himself to have Eddard killed. Cersei tells him it was [[Petyr Baelish]]’s idea to name [[Janos Slynt]] a lord, another foolish move in Tyrion’s eyes. He also learns that it was [[Varys]] who suggested that Ser [[Barristan Selmy|Barristan]] be removed from his post as Lord Commander of the [[Kingsguard]]. Tyrion warns her that Ser Barristan the Bold leading [[Robb Stark]]’s or [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]]’s army would give them too much strength and credibility.

Tyrion tells her Joffrey might be more inclined to listen to him if he feels threatened, something Joffrey doesn’t feel with his mother. Tyrion then suggests that he is hers, and will do nothing without her consent. When he asks Cersei who killed [[Jon Arryn]], Cersei tells him she doesn’t know. She goes on to say that Eddard Stark asked her the same thing, hinting that Jon Arryn suspected her of… incest, Tyrion finishes for her, earning himself a slap in the face. Tyrion tells her he knew all along, and that he is not as blind as their father. Cersei explains how they killed King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]], with [[Lancel Lannister|Lancel]] giving him wine three times the normal potency before he faced the boar. Tyrion takes his leave, and asks [[Vylarr]], his sister’s guard captain, to escort him to the [[Broken Anvil]]. As they ride through the city, Tyrion notices the effect the war is having on the people. Vylarr tells him that very little food is coming into the city.

When Tyrion enters the brothel to visit [[Shae]], he finds Varys already there. Varys says that he had a sudden urge to meet his young lady. Tyrion realizes that the eunuch is indirectly threatening him by showing he knows Tyrion's weakness. The two exchange some veiled warnings / threats. Before Varys leaves he poses a riddle to Tyrion, of a king, a priest and a rich man who each command a sellsword to kill the other two. Varys asks Tyrion who lives and who dies, and then takes his leave. Shae says it is the rich man who lives, but Tyrion is not so sure, saying it depends on the sellsword.

==Synopsis==
[[Maester Cressen]] is looking at the blood-[[Red Comet|red comet]] in the sky over [[Dragonstone]], and considering whether it is an omen. A white raven had arrived from the [[Citadel]], and it meant that the long summer was coming to a close, a summer that lasted just over 10 years. Princess [[Shireen Baratheon|Shireen]] comes to visit the old maester with her fool [[Patchface]]. Shireen’s face is disfigured from a bout of [[greyscale]] as a child, that Maester Cressen was not able to treat sufficiently to prevent scarring. Shireen has been having nightmares of dragons come to eat her, and Cressen explains that Dragonstone was the westernmost outpost of the ancient Freehold of [[Valyria]]. While they are talking, Patchface begins singing "the shadows have come to dance (or stay) my lord", which Shireen says he has been singing all the time lately. Cressen remembers how Lord [[Steffon Baratheon]] found the fool while off in [[Volantis]] looking for a wife for [[Rhaegar Targaryen]] at the behest of King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys II]]. As they returned to [[Storm's End]], the ship sank killing everyone aboard, but Patchface washed up on shore 3 days later, and appeared dead. His skin was clammy cold, yet he coughed up water and lived, although he was broken in mind and body.

Cressen then learns that Ser [[Davos Seaworth|Davos]] had returned last night and was in council with the king. Cressen is disturbed, because he was always asked for his counsel in these matters, but the king was ignoring him. Cressen goes to [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]], and on the way meets Ser Davos. The Onion Knight tells him that all the Stormlords spurned him, for they had no love for Stannis and would not join his cause. Instead, they all supported [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] along with the Lords of the [[Reach]].

We learn Davos’s history, how he had been a notorious smuggler, but during the siege of [[Storm's End]] he had saved the defenders by sailing past the [[House Redwyne|Redwyne]] blockade in the dead of night and brought onions to Lord Stannis’s men. It had allowed them to survive, when they would have starved, until Lord [[Eddard Stark]] lifted the siege. Stannis had knighted Davos for his deed, but also cut short all the fingers on Seaworth's left hand but the thumb for previous misdeeds as a smuggler. Cressen learns of Renly being named king, and worries for him. Cressen raised all three Baratheon children and grieves for them all. Davos says that Stannis has no hope with such a small army, yet the king will not relent and plans to sail against [[King's Landing]].

Cressen then goes in to give counsel to Stannis, and we learn that the king has felt slighted all these years that Renly was given Storm’s End by their brother when by rights it should have been Stannis’s. Cressen advises that Stannis join with Renly, but the King will not treat with him as long as his brother calls himself a king. He also advises that Stannis send Shireen to foster on the [[Eyrie]] to make alliance with the [[House Arryn|Arryns]] (and we learn that Lord [[Jon Arryn]] had planned to foster [[Robert Arryn|his son]] on Dragonstone with Stannis). The suggestion is overheard by Queen [[Selyse Florent]], who storms in and yells at the Maester for advising that Stannis needs help for the war. The Queen is wholly gone over to the god [[R'hllor]] of the red priestess [[Melisandre]]. The Queen believes the comet is an omen from the heart of fire, the god R’hllor who will aid Stannis in his conquest. Stannis is more interested in men than in the help of a god. When Selyse suggests that if Renly were to die, his army would join Stannis, Cressen is horrified and pleads with Stannis that fratricide is evil. Cressen is sent away, and back in his chambers realizes that he must kill Melisandre before she can totally convert the King to her evil schemes.

Cressen prepares a crystal that he plans to put in Melisandre’s drink, but then oversleeps. He enters the Great Hall to find Stannis and his bannermen at the feast table. Cressen is mocked by Melisandre and Patchface because he tripped, but is given a seat by Ser Davos. Davos tells the maester that Melisandre has seen victory in her flames, but Cressen tells the red woman that her god holds no power here. Cressen then proposes a toast. Melisandre drinks and remains unaffected. She then invites Cressen to drink as well. The ruby at Melisandre’s throat glows, and she tells Cressen that R’hllor does have power here. Maester Cressen drinks and dies immediately.

Qyburn left the company and joined the court at King's Landing, where he convinced [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] to allow him to experiment on the dying [[Gregor Clegane]]. He later gained favor with her by using his knowledge to torture her prisoners. Cersei eventually appointed him her Master of Whisperers to replace [[Varys]] after his disappearance. Qyburn also took Varys' place in the [[Small council]]

Part of the payment for his services to Cersei included permission to experiment on various prisoners and enemies of Cersei's. These typically proved fatal to the subject. Qyburn was working on a master project to build an "undefeatable champion" for Cersei. He ordered a massive suit of armor, too huge to be worn by any human, for this purpose. His extended experiments on Gregor Clegane seem to factor into the size of his creation. Qyburn may also have some knowledge of magic, as he suspected Oberyn to have used it on the venom to prolong Clegane's death.

Qyburn is present at the Red Keep when Cersei completes her penance walk and introduces Cersei to her champion and the newest member of the [[Kingsguard]], "[[Gregor Clegane|Ser Robert Strong]]". Qyburn, though dismissed from small council, still works with the eunuch's whisperers. According to [[Kevan Lannister]] Qyburn is in charge of the dungeons where most of the (falsely) accused lovers of [[Margaery Tyrell]] are held. Cersei Lannister is delighted to hear this, as Qyburn was one last straw Cersei could clutch in King's Landing.

Gared went on an expedition with [[Will]] and Ser [[Waymar Royce]], who commanded them. They followed a group of wildling raiders. During the night they caught up with them. Will sneaked near to gather information. He did not see any movement and reported that the Wildlings were dead, probably killed by the cold. Gared tried to persuade Royce to head back to the Wall but without luck. The three man went to search the corpses to discover what had killed them. It could not have been the cold , as the Wall was slightly melting at this point.

Will and Ser Waymar walked the last part while Gared remained with the horses. They could not find the bodies. Will climbed a tree to look for them. Suddenly Ser Waymar was attacked and killed by the [[Others|Others]], a group of supposedly mythical creatures. Will stayed in the trees until he was sure that the Others had left. When Will went down he was attacked and killed by Ser Waymar who had been turned into an [[Others#Wights|wight]].<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Prologue|Prologue]]</ref>

The books do not mention what Gared had seen but he apparently fled south. He did not rejoin his brothers at the Wall and so was seen as a deserter. Gared was arrested south of the [[Wall]] outside a small holdfast and later questioned and sentenced to death by Lord [[Eddard Stark]]. Also present on the day of his death were [[Bran Stark|Bran]], [[Robb Stark|Robb]], [[Jon Snow|Jon]], [[Theon Greyjoy]], and [[Jory Cassel]]. The Night Watch is probably the oldest order in [[Seven Kingdoms]], it survived the fall of the kingdoms of the [[First Men]] following the [[Andal Invasion]] and the War of Conquest. After having pushed back this threat, the Wall was built by [[Bran the Builder|Brandon the Builder]] in order to preserve the kingdoms of men from a new return of the Others.

But other than the corrupting of the thirteenth [[Lord Commander of the Night's Watch|Lord Commander]] named the "[[Night's King]]", the Other attack never came. instead most frequent attacks came from the [[Wildlings]] led by their [[King-Beyond-the-Wall|kings]] or on their constant raids and little by little, the Night Watch came to forget that its main mission was not the fight against the Wildlings, but against the Others. The Wall seeming quite sufficient for that, the purpose of the Guard was less and less obvious, and its manpower decreased more and more, with most of the [[Seven Kingdoms]] neglecting this border and Only the North and the [[house Stark|starks]] have the memory of the old days, but, even here, the Others are mostly no more than vague figures in tales of old women.

Before the time of [[Aegon I Targaryen|Aegon I]] conquered Westeros, the Night's Watch boasted nineteen castles along the hundred leagues of the Wall, accounting over ten thousand men at arms with Castle Black quartered five thousand fighting men with all their horses, servants, and equipment. Disgraced nobles, bastards, and even the unwanted legitimate offspring of nobles are also “encouraged” to take the black, making many of today’s Watch a surly and dissatisfied lot.

Those who come voluntarily are free to leave during any time of their training but no men may leave after he said the wovs "taken the black", desertion are punished by death. after taking the wovs, they cannot own any land, marry, or father children and the life is hard , they start a new life, with their previous crimes forgiven, their old ties are broken.

Men of the Night's Watch are garbed all in black, a tradition that earned them the nickname "crows". While some use this name derogatorily, many in the Night's Watch have adopted the term for their own use. They are also called "the black brothers".

The Night's Watch control 19 castles along [[the Wall]], but only few of them are maintained by an ever dwindling force. These castles, of course, are more garrisons, composed of mostly barracks, stables, storehouses, towers and out-buildings as they have no walls of their own(other then THE wall) and cannot be considered "true" castles. They were purposefully built in this fashion so the Watch could man the Wall itself and defend against threats from the north but be unable to repel attacks from the south should the Watch ever raise in rebellion. Presently, due to manpower shortages, the Watch only mans the [[Shadow Tower]],[[Castle Black]] and [[Eastwatch-by-the-sea|Eastwatch]] although there are plans to regarrison the [[Nightfort]]. The question of who will be responsible for this is a point of tension between the [[Jon Snow]] Lord Commander of the Watch and King [[Stannis Baratheon]]. Patrols between the castles used to be more regular, but as the manpower of the Night's Watch diminished, so did the number of patrols. Now the Watch uses mules to ride atop the wall, since the Wall has not been graveled between the older castles in a long time. After an attempt to investigate in force, most of the brothers who went with him were killed at the [[Battle of the Fist of the First Men]]. Following this staggering loss, he was murdered by his own rangers during a mutiny.
