Amongst whores, there are many hierarchies. Some cater to highly exclusive clientele, make a good enough living and may to a certain extent pick and choose their clientele, while others take who they can get and do whatever they have to in order to survive, often living miserable lives. In [[Essos]] many whores are enslaved.
==Whores in Westeros==
Whores are normally on the bottom rung of the societal ladder, even the wealthier ones, and are looked down upon by most people because of their trade. It is considered dishonorable for a nobleman to openly frequent whores and brothels, hence the secret passageway that runs from [[Chataya's brothel|brothel]] in [[King's Landing]] to a nearby stable. Despite these attitudes, [[Westeros]] teems with brothels and whores. [[Tywin Lannister]] is well known for his disdain of whores and those who take advantage of their services.

In the [[Free Cities]], and other towns an cities, the attitude towards prostitution is slightly different, there appears to be less ignominy in engaging the services of a whore. This may be because many of the [[Free Cities]] practice slavery and where there is slavery there will be sexual abuse and exploitation, many whores are of course also [[slave]]s. In the [[Free Cities]] and elsewhere the slave-whores bondage is indicated by the tears tattooed beneath their right eyes.

The practice of [[slavery]] has also created a thriving business in trained male and female bed-slaves, particularly from [[Lys]], although whether all enslaved whores are also trained bed-slaves is unlikely.
Many slaves are forced into prostitution during childhood. The '''Andal invasion''' was a migration of the [[Andals]] from [[Essos]] to [[Westeros]]. This took place between six thousand and four thousand years before [[Aegon's Landing]]. The migration was often violent. The old kingdoms of the [[First Men]] were destroyed and the [[children of the forest]] were pushed back to [[the north]]. Sometimes the takeover was more peaceful with intermarriage between Andals and First Men as in the case of [[House Hightower]].

==Invasion==
The [[Andals]] were the first new invaders after the [[First Men]] had settled their peace with the [[children of the forest]] and lived in harmony with them for four thousand years. They came from the [[Hills of Andalos]] in [[Essos]]. They were tall and fair-haired warriors who carried steel weapons and the seven-pointed star of [[Faith of the Seven|their gods]] painted on their bodies.{{Ref|aGoT|40}}{{Ref|aGoT|66}} They eventually swept across Westeros much as the First Men did thousands of years before.

The [[Fingers]] in what is now the [[Vale of Arryn]] were where the Andals first landed to wrest from the First Men.{{Ref|aSoS|68}} The Andals arrived in successive waves. The wars between the First Men and the Andals lasted hundreds of years, but eventually the six southron realms fell to them. Only the Kings of Winter remained in the North.{{Ref|aGoT|66}} The Andals burned out all the [[weirwood]] groves and slew the [[Children of the Forest|children]] when they found them,{{Ref|aGoT|66}} believing them abominations, and put the myriad First Men kingdoms of the South to the sword. They created great kingdoms of their own, but this process was somewhat slow. They expanded to the [[Iron Islands]] roughly two thousand years after their initial invasion.

Eventually, Andal kings joined forces and extinguished [[House Mudd]], who were the rulers of the [[King of the Rivers and the Hills|Kingdom of the River and the Hills]] and kings among the First Men. After conquering the [[Trident]], the Andals were able to invade [[the North]]. However, every attack was thrown back by the [[crannogmen]] of [[the Neck]] or the strong fortifications of [[Moat Cailin]].{{Ref|aGoT|66}} Eventually, the Andals relented and the North was allowed to remain in peace, although over succeeding millennia Andal blood entered the North through dynastic marriages.

One of the major, if largely forgotten, consequences of the invasions is that the [[children of the forest]] abandoned Westeros and slowly disappeared over succeeding generations.
During and following the Andal invasions, six southron kingdoms of Westeros were forged: the [[Kingdom of Mountain and Vale]], the [[Kingdom of the Rock]], the [[Kingdom of the Reach]], the [[Kingdom of the Iron Islands]], the [[Kingdom of the River]] and the [[Kingdom of the Stormlands]]. The Andals introduced writing,as before that time the First Men only used runes for carving on stone. Everything since written about the [[Age of Heroes]], the [[Dawn Age]], and [[the Long Night]] originates from stories written down by septons. They also introduced the [[Faith of the Seven]] to Westeros in their newly raised kingdoms and largely extinguished worship of the [[old gods]] south of the Neck. An exception to the spread of the Faith is the Iron Islands, where the native worship of the [[Drowned God]] was actually adopted by the invading Andals. They also introduced weapons of iron, the use of horses in warfare and the concept of [[Knight|chivalry]].

[[House Greyiron]], which had ruled the Iron Islands for a thousand years, was also defeated during this time.

Jon Connington is the only surviving son of [[Armond Connington]], Lord of Griffin's Roost, and his wife. He served as a squire in [[King's Landing]] along with Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen]]. He was the most headstrong amongst the gaggle of young [[lord]]lings who would gather around Prince Rhaegar competing for his royal favour. He danced with [[Ashara Dayne]] at the [[Tourney at Harrenhal]]{{ref|aSoS|24}} and was unhorsed at a tourney held at [[Storm's End]] by Ser [[Barristan Selmy]].{{ref|aSoS|67}}

Due to his connections with the royal family, and because he was a noted warrior, Jon was chosen by King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys II]] as [[Hand of the King]] after the dismissal of [[Owen Merryweather]]. Aerys wanted someone young and vigorous to match the [[Robert's Rebellion|rebelling]] [[Robert Baratheon]]. When word of the king’s choice reached [[Tywin Lannister]] he declared that the Handship had come to soon for Connington as he was too young, too bold and too eager for glory. Because the traditional lords of the Stormlands, [[House Baratheon]], were in rebellion to the crown, Jon Connington was possibly titled Lord of [[Storm's End]],{{ref|ADWD|Appendix}} although that castle was still held by [[Stannis Baratheon]] during the rebellion.

After the [[Battle of Ashford]], Connington took over the pursuit of Robert from the [[House Tyrell|Tyrell]] army. In the [[Riverlands]], near the town of [[Stoney Sept]], he caught up with Robert, who was hiding in the town. Jon's soldiers began a house-to-house search after failing to find him, but they did not locate Robert before his allies arrived at Stoney Sept to oust Connington and his forces. At this point the [[Battle of the Bells]] began. The rebel army under the joint command of Lords [[Eddard Stark]], [[Jon Arryn]] and [[Hoster Tully]] immediately began attacking the royal army. Jon Connington fought back fiercely, personally killing Jon Arryn's nephew and heir, [[Denys Arryn]], and wounding Lord Tully. It was thought that Robert would have killed Jon, but in spite of the determination of both men to find each in the chaos, they never crossed swords. When Connington saw that the battle was lost, he managed to escape and was able to retreat in good order.{{ref|aSoS|29}} Jon's retreat was quite a feat considering the fierce, urban fighting would make it hard to hold the army together.

When reflecting on his search for Robert, he says that [[Tywin Lannister]] himself could have done no better. [[Myles Toyne]] tells him that Lord Tywin would not have bothered with the search, but would've burned the town and everyone in it. Not wanting to be branded a murderer, Jon chose a more honourable course of action, wanting the glory of slaying Robert for himself.{{ref|aDwD|61}}

King Aerys II held Jon responsible for this defeat and exiled him, stripping him of his lands, wealth and titles. He thinks had he stayed it might well have been him the Golden Company turned to for command after Myles died, instead of [[Harry Strickland]].

It was said that Jon was kicked out of the Golden Company after being caught stealing from the company's war chests. It was also claimed that Jon died, that he drank himself to death in [[Lys]] a year later. The shame of the lie still sticks in Jon's craw, but he recalls that [[Varys]] insisted the lie was necessary, tittering in his mincing voice,

The rumors of his disgrace and death reached Westeros and successfully convinced everyone involved in the game of thrones that he was dead and gone, enabling him to focus on raising and protecting "Young Griff" in the guise of his father, "Griff". Jon recalls that Varys was adamant about the need for secrecy.

It is the main seat of [[House Baratheon]], and before it, the ancestral seat of the [[Storm King]]s extending back many thousands of years. The castle is said to be protected by spells woven into its very walls that prevent [[magic]] from affecting it or passing through it.

==Features==
Storm's End is one of the strongest castles in the Seven Kingdoms. The castle is surrounded by a massive outer curtain wall, one hundred feet high and forty feet thick on its thinnest side and nearly eighty feet thick on its seaward side. It is composed of a double course of stones with an inner core of sand and rubble. The wall is smooth and curving, the stones so well placed and so perfectly together that the wind can find no purchase. On the seaward side, there is a 150-foot drop below the wall into the sea.

The castle itself consists of one huge drum tower crowned with formidable battlements, so that from a distance enemies can see what appears to be a single huge, spiked fist thrusting towards the sky in defiance. The tower is so large that it comfortably contains the granary, barracks, armoury, feast hall and lord's chambers all at once.{{Ref|aCoK|31}} There are spells woven into the stonework. The seaward side of the castle stands upon a high white cliffs overlooking the sea, and there is a barred, watery passage through a cavern that leads beneath the castle.

The mighty fortress called Storm's End has stood for centuries, facing the terrible weather of [[Shipbreaker Bay]] with little wear to show for it. Legend claims that it was built by [[Durran]], the first [[Storm King]] during the [[Dawn Age]], who declared a war against the gods after they killed his family and guests, ruining his wedding to their daughter [[Elenei]]. It was said that he raised six each larger and more formidable until he raised Storm's End. Some believe this was because the [[children of the forest]] took a hand in its construction, using their magics in the raising the castle walls allowing it to resist the storms. Others believe that a young boy who grew up to be [[Bran the Builder]] advised Durran on its construction. The truth of the matter is unknown.{{Ref|aCoK|31}}

Storm's End has proven to be an exceptionally formidable fortress. In its long history it has never fallen to either siege or storm. The castle has endured several sieges and battles in recent history. The last Storm King, [[Argilac]] the Arrogant, abandoned his impressive defenses to meet [[Orys Baratheon]] in [[Last Storm|open battle]] during [[Aegon I Targaryen]]'s [[War of Conquest]], and suffered accordingly. During the [[War of the Usurper]], Storm's End was [[Siege of Storm's End|besieged for a year]] by the host of [[Mace Tyrell]], who commanded the landward forces, whilst [[Paxter Redwyne]]'s fleet of the [[Arbor]] kept the castle cut off by sea. Part of [[Tyrion Lannister]]’s negotiations with [[Brown Ben Plumm]] for becoming a Second Son include becoming indebted to them. Just prior to signing the Second Sons' book Tyrion is handed a pile of roughly 50 to 60 promissory notes to sign. Tyrion remarks that only one in ten Second Sons receives a promissory note.

[[Tybero Istarion|Tybero "Inkpots" Istarion]] hands him a quill, and ink from Old [[Volantis]], which he tells Tyrion will last as long as maesters' black. He explains to Inkpots that Lannisters love tradition and to lend him his knife.

Tyrion pricks the ball of his thumb and squeezes out a fat drop of blood into the inkpot, trades the dagger for a quill, and scrawls ''Tyrion of House Lannister, Lord of [[Casterly Rock]]'', in a big bold hand, just below Ser [[Jorah Mormont]]'s more modest signature. The Second Sons' armorer is [[Hammer]]; his apprentice is [[Nail]]. The Second Sons keep their company armour in six big wayns drawn up near the center of their camp. Under roofs of bent wood and stiffened leather, the wagon beds are heaped high with old weaponry and armour. Most of the iron is not very good; it is not just old and ill-fitting but dented, cracked and brittle with dried blood or rust. According to Ser [[Jorah Mormont]] there is some sound steel in there, none of it is pretty, but it will stop a sword.{{Ref|aDwD|66}}. Some of the armor in the wayns are what sellswords were wearing when they died and some of it is made to fit boys.

Jorah clads himself from head to heel in company steel. His greaves are mismatched, his gorget is spotted with rust, his vambraces rich and ornate, inlaid with niello flowers. On his right hand is a gauntlet of lobstered steel, on his left a fingerless mitt of rusted mail. The nipples on his muscled breastplate have a pair of iron rings through them. Upon entering one of the wayns Tyrion and [[Penny]] find a rusted iron half-helm and then a greathelm, a crossbow, a morningstar, a warhammer, a studded mace, and half a dozen longswords. Tyrion finds a dirk he likes, a nasty piece of steel with a triangular blade with a bit of rust on it. He finds a wood and leather sheath that fits and slips the dirk inside. He remarks that the longsword Penny picks up is notched, denoting that it is cheap steel. He examines a heavy shirt of iron mail so full of holes it almost looks moth eaten. After the [[Red Wedding]], Riverland nobility offered terms to the [[Iron Throne]], the support for the [[House Stark|Stark]] - Tully kingdom slipping away. House Lannister, supported by their new allies, House Frey, besieged Riverrun in an effort to remove the final vestiges of resistance in the [[Riverlands]] and install Ser [[Emmon Frey]] as the new Lord of Riverrun, as the terms of the alliance between the Freys and Lannisters dictated. Ser [[Daven Lannister]], the new Warden of the West, was sent to command the siege.{{ref|aFfC|27}}

Ser Brynden Tully, anticipating the siege, gathered all the foodstuffs and goods he could within the castle, expelled all the unnecessary mouths and prepared for a long siege. Ser [[Ryman Frey]], the commander of the House Frey forces, brought out Lord [[Edmure Tully]], who had been captured at the Red Wedding and threatened to hang him daily unless the castle surrendered. He never went through with his threat and the siege continued.{{ref|aFfC|33}}

The siege was broken when Ser [[Jaime Lannister]], arriving with reinforcements, had Ser Ryman dismissed and had Lord Edmure brought to him and explained what would happen should the Lannister forces have to storm the castle.

Lord Edmure was sent to [[Casterly Rock]], accompanied by [[Jeyne Westerling]], the wife and Queen of the late [[Robb Stark]], who had been within Riverrun when it was surrendered. Pennytree is named for a huge old oak tree that grows by the duckpond, to which hundreds of copper pennies have been nailed. The hills to either side of Pennytree were historically known as the Teats. Later recounting the tale to [[Robert Baratheon|King Robert]], Arya tells the truth while Joffrey lies, saying that Mycah, Arya, and Nymeria attacked him without provocation. Joffrey frequently orders her to be beaten by his [[Kingsguard]] as punishment for actions taken by her brother [[Robb Stark|Robb]] in his rebellion. On one occasion he orders her to be stripped naked at court, and on another he shows her her father's head, which has been placed on a spike on the [[Red Keep]]. This prompts her to consider an attempt to kill him, but the action is prevented by [[Sandor Clegane]], who sees her intention and subtly stops her.

At a tourney celebrating Joffrey's name day, at which there is only a small crowd and few competitors, she realises she has lost her romantic notions about knightly and courtly love. At the tourney, a knight by the name of Ser [[Dontos Hollard]] disgraces himself by showing up too drunk to compete. Joffrey decides that he should be killed, causing a horrified Sansa to thoughtlessly speak out. Before Joffrey can lash out at her for contradicting him, Sansa makes up a convincing lie which Sandor Clegane backs up; Sansa also pleads successfully with the king to spare Dontos. A placated Joffrey instead merely strips him of his knighthood and makes him a court fool, as Sansa suggested.{{Ref|aCoK|2}}

[[Tyrion Lannister]] treats her with surprising kindness, and his arrival in the city and assumption of the position of acting Hand of the King sees an end to the more overt abuses directed at Sansa. Sansa also develops a unique relationship with Sandor, who despite his brusque words and hideous demeanor treats her gently and refuses to beat her at Joffrey's command. He privately mocks her for her naive nature but also displays sympathy for her predicament. Sandor saves her life during the [[Riot of King's Landing]]. Tyrion panics when he thinks she has been lost during the rioting, when her sworn shield abandons her to save himself.

One night Sansa finds a note in her room, directing her to come to the godswood if she wants to go home. Sansa is asked to sup with [[Margaery Tyrell]] and her grandmother [[Olenna Redwyne]]. She is escorted to dinner by Loras who takes her breath away with his beauty and compliments. She refers back to the rose he gave her at the tourney in honour of her father, but he appears to have forgotten her and the rose. She tries to draw out further small talk, inadvertently offending Loras by saying it must be hard for his sister that [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] died, not realising that they were lovers.

Loras leaves her at the dinner, where she is warmly welcomed by the Tyrell women. Over dinner, Olenna tries to find out more about Joffery; with some coaxing and the arrangement of a distraction to prevent any spies from overhearing, Sansa confesses to them that Joffrey is a monster and begs Margaery not to marry him. Margaery insists that she will be safe with her brother [[Loras Tyrell|Loras]]'s addition to the [[Kingsguard]], and brushes off the concerns.

The Tyrell women raise the possibility of Sansa being freed from King's Landing and taken to [[Highgarden]] to be married to the Tyrell heir [[Willas Tyrell|Willas]]. Willis is crippled, but kind, intelligent, and capable. Sansa readily agrees, anxious to be free of the Lannisters, and becomes friends with Margaery for a time.{{Ref|aSoS|6}}

She shares with Ser Dontos the Tyrell plot, and Ser Dontos advises her against it, fearfully noting that the Tyrells are not as gentle as they seem. Sansa, frustrated with the apparent lack of progress in Dontos's own supposed plans, disregards his warnings. However, he informs his employer [[Petyr Baelish]] of the plot, who in turn informs the Lannisters.

Not wishing to lose their hostage, [[Tywin Lannister]] acts quickly to marry Sansa to [[Tyrion Lannister]] against the wishes of both parties. Sansa, now thirteen, does her best to hide her feelings toward her disfigured dwarf husband, remaining courteous to him despite her disgust with his physical appearance. Tyrion does not require that she consummate the marriage, for which Sansa is grateful, {{ref|asos|28}} particularly after learning of her brother and mother's death at the [[Red Wedding]]. {{ref|asos|59}}

Dontos insists that Sansa wear the hairnet he gave to her earlier to the wedding between Joffrey and Margaery, which she does. When Joffrey chokes and dies at the wedding feast, Sansa flees and meets with Dontos. He escorts her to a boat that takes her to a ship, where [[Petyr Baelish]] greets her. Baelish explains to Sansa that Joffrey's death was due to a poison that had been smuggled into the feast ,disguised as of one of the amethysts on her hairnet, and shares with Sansa some of the details of the plot between himself and Olenna Redwyne to kill Joffrey. Littlefinger also has Dontos killed and dumped overboard, explaining that while he had played his part well, a drunk such as Dontos could never be entrusted to keep such sensitive information secret for long. {{ref|asos|61}}

Taking Sansa with him to his meager personal holdings, the original 'little finger' of land in the [[Vale of Arryn|Vale]], Baelish dyes Sansa's hair black and coaches her on a story to pass her off as his bastard daughter Alayne Stone, so as to avoid detection. After the wedding, the three travel to her seat at the [[Eyrie]]. There Sansa is revealed to Lysa as her niece and Lysa agrees to assist in the coverup providing her with hair dye to colour her most obvious Tully feature, her auburn hair. Lysa also proposes to wed Sansa to her sickly son Robert. Sansa is appalled by this, but keeps her true feelings to herself. She finds herself having to comfort young Robert, who is no longer able to share his mother's bed, since Petyr is in it. Robert frequently crawls into her bed and she is disgusted by his shaking sickness, which often leads him to wet her bed. Sansa is asked to sup with [[Margaery Tyrell]] and her grandmother [[Olenna Redwyne]]. She is escorted to dinner by Loras who takes her breath away with his beauty and compliments. She refers back to the rose he gave her at the tourney in honour of her father, but he appears to have forgotten her and the rose. She tries to draw out further small talk, inadvertently offending Loras by saying it must be hard for his sister that [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] died, not realising that they were lovers.

Loras leaves her at the dinner, where she is warmly welcomed by the Tyrell women. Over dinner, Olenna tries to find out more about Joffery; with some coaxing and the arrangement of a distraction to prevent any spies from overhearing, Sansa confesses to them that Joffrey is a monster and begs Margaery not to marry him. Margaery insists that she will be safe with her brother [[Loras Tyrell|Loras]]'s addition to the [[Kingsguard]], and brushes off the concerns.

The Tyrell women raise the possibility of Sansa being freed from King's Landing and taken to [[Highgarden]] to be married to the Tyrell heir [[Willas Tyrell|Willas]]. When Benerro’s voice rises to a crescendo flames leap from his fingers with a sudden whoosh and make the crowd gasp. [[Tyrion]] sees that the priest can trace fiery letters in the air as well. [[Valyrian]] glyphs Tyrion realises. He recognises perhaps two glyphs in ten; one is ''Doom'', the other ''Darkness''.

Women are weeping and men are shaking their fists. Tyrion has a bad feeling about it. The atmosphere reminds him of the day [[Myrcella]] sailed for [[Dorne]] and [[Riot of King's Landing|the riot that boiled up]] as they made their way back to the [[Red Keep]]. {{Ref|aDwD|27}}. Tyrion recalls that [[Haldon]] Halfmaester had spoken of using Benerro to [[Young Griff]]’s advantage, however now that he had seen and heard the man himself that strikes him as a very bad idea. He hopes that [[Griff]] has better sense.
Benerro points at the [[Black Wall]] behind the temple, gesturing up at its parapets, where a handful of armoured guardsmen stand gazing down.

He aks Ser [[Jorah]] what Benerro is saying. Jorah replies:

This translation makes the hairs on [[Tyrion]]’s neck begin to prickle. ''Prince [[Young Griff|Aegon]] will find no friend here'' he thinks. The red priest spoke of an ancient prophecy, a prophecy that foretold the coming of a hero to deliver the world from darkness.
Tyrion thinks:

Tyrion knows he does not need to be a prophet himself to foresee how Benerro and his followers might react to a second [[Targaryen]]. ''Griff will see that too, surely'', Tyrion thinks, surprised to find how much he cares.

By this time Ser [[Jorah]] has forced his way through most of the crowd at the back of the plaza and they head down an alleyway. [[Tyrion]] can still hear Benerro’s voice growing fainter at their back and the roars his words provoke, sudden as thunder.

He preaches that [[Daenerys Targaryen]] is [[Azor Ahai]] reborn, an ancient hero of the R'hllor faith and encourages many to support her. This unnerves the Triarchs as four out of every five inhabitants of Volantis are slaves and they fear an uprising. Thousands come to see him preach every night, but the Triarchs are powerless to stop him, as too many of the [[Tiger Cloaks]] worship the Lord of Light so the Triarchs dare not order them to attack.

The Triarch [[Malaquo]] even attempted to hire the [[Golden Company]] to kill Benerro and purge the temple of his followers but the Company refused the offer.

Benerro in secret sent one of his priests [[Moqorro]] to [[Daenerys Targaryen]] aboard the ship ''[[Selaesori Qhoran]]'' as an emissary from the R'hllor faith. Even though the ship's destination is [[Qarth]], Benerro saw in the flames that the ship will never reach Qarth.{{Ref|aDwD|27}}

Balon is the eldest surviving son of Lord [[House Greyjoy|Quellon Greyjoy]] and a lady of [[House Sunderly]]. It is not clear when he was born.

Balon learned to sail when still young and was a very skilled captain. Balon scaled the [[Flint Cliffs]] to the Blind Lord's haunted tower when he was ten. By thirteenth year, he had become an expert oarsman. At fifteen he sailed with [[Dagmer|Dagmer Cleftjaw]] to the [[Stepstones]] on a reaving, killing his first man and taking his first two salt wives there. By seventeen he captained his own [[Ships|longship]].{{Ref|aFfC|1}} Later he often went raiding and was known for his fierceness and fearlessness.

He succeeded his father as Lord Reaper of Pyke when the latter died during a raiding journey. When he returned to Pyke he found out his younger brother [[Urrigon Greyjoy|Urrigon]] had died of gangrene after being injured in the finger dance. The [[maester]] had tried to save the hand of the boy but his potions had failed and Urrigon (14 years old) lost his life instead. Balon commanded the same treatment be used on the maester, who died along with Balon's stepmother.{{Ref|aFfC|1}}

Balon was married to [[Alannys Harlaw]], who gave him three sons and a daughter: [[Rodrik Greyjoy|Rodrik]], [[Maron Greyjoy|Maron]], [[Asha Greyjoy|Asha]], and [[Theon Greyjoy|Theon]].

An ironborn man took pride in not having to pay for jewelery but taking it from those too weak to hold it ("Paying the Iron price"). They ruled large parts of Westeros, including the [[Riverlands]], [[Bear Island]] and the [[Arbor]]. After [[War of Conquest|Aegon's Conquest]] they had lost their independence and were not allowed to raid other territories of the Kingdom. Balon wished to return to those customs, which he considered a better way for the ironborn.

Balon watched as [[Robert Baratheon]] [[Robert's Rebellion|overthrew the Targaryens]] taking no part, but Balon was quick to seize the chance to revert to the way of old when he thought that Robert recent gained rule, through conquest. Would not have the support, the men and/or the will to resist him and launched his [[Greyjoy Rebellion|Rebellion]].

The ironborn won early success when they attacked [[Lannisport]] and destroyed its fleet, but Balon's triumph was short lived, his elder son [[Rodrik Greyjoy|Rodrik]] died at the walls of Seagard and his fleet and forces were defeated, his second son [[Maron Greyjoy|Maron]] died while defending Pyke. Balon was forced to accept defeat and bent the knee, re swearing fealty to the [[House Baratheon of King's Landing|Baratheons]], allowing [[Theon Greyjoy|Theon]], his sole surviving son, to be taken hostage by [[Eddard Stark]].{{Ref|aCoK|11}}

==History==
During the [[War of the Five Kings]], Riverrun was besieged by a Lannister host commanded by [[Jaime Lannister]], it was relived in the [[Battle of the Camps]] by a Stark force commanded by [[Robb Stark]]. Following which it was the place of [[Robb Stark]] elevation to [[King in the North]]. The River Lords, of the Trident, sworn to Riverrun, who had never been part of the old Northern Kingdom, also proclaimed their support for King Robb.

Following the death of King Robb Stark, [[Brynden Tully]] continued to hold Riverrun against a renewed Lannister siege, until Jaime Lannister negotiated the castle's surrender.
