==History==
Varamyr, known as Lump at the time, used one of his dogs [[Loptail]], [[Sniff]] or [[Growler]] to kill his younger brother [[Bump]]. When Varamyr's father came upon Bump's body, the dogs were sniffing around it. Not knowing which one had done the act, he put all three to death. However, before Loptail's death, Varamyr slipped inside his skin and felt Loptail's death. His reaction, a scream, informed Varamyr's parents that he was a [[warg]].

His father dragged him through the woods until he came to [[Haggon]], an elderly warg, informing Varamyr that he belonged with his own kind. Haggon taught him how to warg properly and the rules of the ability. He also instructed him on the strengths and weaknesses of the different animals and rudimentary survival skills. Haggon often traded with the [[Night's Watch]], and it was on one of those trips where Varamyr began to dream of living south of the [[Wall]]. He named himself Varamyr when he was ten years old.

When Haggon lay dying, Varamyr, resentful, stole his wolf [[Greyskin]], who Haggon intended to be his second life. At that point Varamyr was calling himself Varamyr Threeskins and then Fourskins after taking Greyskin. Over the years, Varamyr died eight more times while wearing the skins of other creatures. However his power grew and he was known to ride into battle on the back of 13-foot tall bear. He had a hall of moss, mud and hew logs, which had been Haggon's before he died. A dozen villages paid him homage. When he wanted a woman from the villages, he would send his shadowcat to get them. They came, some crying, some not, but all resentful. Eventually Mance Rayder sought an alliance with Varamyr. The '''Seven Kingdoms''' is a nation comprised of seven formerly independent kingdoms on the continent of [[Westeros]]. It is ruled by a king who sits on the [[Iron Throne]] in the capital city, [[King's Landing]].

==Origins==
The Seven Kingdoms takes its origins from the [[War of Conquest]], in which the [[Valyria]]n [[Aegon I]] invaded Westeros with his [[dragon]]s, conquering six of the seven independent nations and consolidating them under the singular rule of [[House Targaryen]]. These kingdoms were:

* [[The Vale]]
* The [[Stormlands]]
* [[The Reach]]
* The [[Westerlands]]
* The [[Iron Islands]] consisting at that time of the Iron Islands themselves proper and the [[Riverlands]], conquered by the Iron born.
Aegon built the new nation's capital on the spot of his landing. The final kingdom, [[Dorne]], permanently joined the nation two centuries later by marriage pact.

==Territory==
The nation's territory includes all but the northernmost tip of the continent, where the [[Wall]] defines its northern border. The nation also controls the many islands off the coast of Westeros, such as [[Tarth]] and the [[Iron Islands]]. It is occasionally drawn into conflicts over the [[Stepstones]] off its southeastern coast, but it has rarely controled a significant portion of them.

==Culture==
The nation's culture is an amalgamation of the many different peoples that have taken residence on the continent, and each kingdom retains its unique flavor. The influence of the [[Andal]]s is strongest in the south, while the [[North]] still follows many customs of the [[First Men]]. Dorne is heavily influenced by the mass immigration of the [[Rhoynar]]. Small groups, such as the [[ironmen]] and the [[mountain clans]], maintain very different cultures from the rest of the nation.

The Targaryen monarchs primarily favored the Andal customs of the southern six kingdoms. It is a feudal society, with each kingdom ruled by a high lord that answers only to the King. The [[Faith of the Seven]] is the official religion of the nation, though other gods, such as the [[Old Gods]] in the North and the [[Drowned God]] in the Iron Islands, are also followed.

Tyrion is Tywin's third child, a misshapen dwarf nicknamed "The Imp" and "The Halfman". He is capable of cruelty to his enemies, but also has great sympathy for fellow outcasts and the mistreated.

Kevan Lannister was [[Tywin Lannister]]'s younger brother. He served for years as Tywin's most trusted captain. He is known for his reliability and loyalty. Kevan recognized the superiority of his brother at an early age and was comfortable doing his duty to realize his brother's wishes, though this meant perpetually living in his shadow. It is said that Kevan never had a thought that Tywin hadn't had first.

Lancel is the oldest son of Kevan. He served as a squire for Robert Baratheon and helped Cersei manufacture the hunting accident that killed him. During Jaime's absence, he had a short affair with Cersei, who thought he looked something like Jaime. He received a wound at the [[Battle of the Blackwater]] that nearly killed him. During his recovery, he became a zealot of the [[Faith of the Seven|Faith]] and plans to abandon his new lordship to join the reformed [[Faith Militant]].

The son of Ser Stafford, Daven is a capable soldier and a significant improvement over his father. He is leonine in appearance, with bushy blonde hair and a stocky build. He has a coarse but affable demeanor, laughing frequently and making obscene jokes.

Daven swore a holy oath not to cut his hair until he avenged his father's death on Rickard Karstark. After Robb executed Rickard for treason, Daven still refused to cut his hair. He was given orders to lay siege to Riverrun and appointed Warden of the West. Daven was not respected by the lords of the Trident under his command and proved unable to make progress.

===Genna===
The sister of Lord Tywin, Genna Lannister is married to Emmon Frey, and has born four sons. After Lady Joanna's death, she appears to have taken a maternal interest in Tywin's children. Lady Genna is a stout woman, although once shapely and buxom, and is shrewd, ruthless and blunt; she commands her husband utterly.

The war has not treated Lady Genna gently; of her four sons, two have been killed. Cleos Frey, her firstborn, who was killed as he was escorting Jaime and Brienne from Riverrun and Tion Frey, her third son, who was killed by the Karstarks at Riverrun while a captive.

Upon the death of Robb Stark, House Tully was dispossessed of Riverrun, which was awarded to Lady Genna, her Frey husband and her surviving children. They acquired the castle after the submission of Lord Edmure Tully, who was taken prisoner at the Red Wedding.

Good-Brother (brother-in-law) and cousin to Lord Tywin, he is regarded as an incompetent commander. His sister was the late Lady Joanna, Tywin's wife and mother to Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion.

In his youth, he was a renowned tournament knight. At the Ashford Tourney he defeated Ser Androw Ashford to become one of the contest's five champions. He successfully defended his position from all challengers, including Ser Jon Penrose, whom he battered with his shield after losing his horse and sword.

Tywin's father, Tytos was Lord of Casterly Rock, Shield of Lannisport, and Warden of the West. He was a tolerant and kindly man, but a terrible lord. Under his lordship, House Lannister lost much of its prestige and power. He allowed himself to be easily bullied by lesser lords, who laughed at him behind his back. Two of his own bannermen, the lords of Tarbeck and Reynes, openly rebelled against his authority. After the death of his wife, Tytos began sleeping with whores and took one as a mistress. He gave his mistress free reign over Casterly Rock and allowed her to wear his late wife's jewelery. This enraged the young Tywin, who rebuilt the house's reputation after Tytos's death.

Nearly seven feet tall, Dunk has a humble personality and thinks of himself as thick-headed. His early exploits are chronicled in the "Dunk and Egg" stories of ''[[The Hedge Knight]]'' and ''[[The Sworn Sword]]''.

===Early life===
Dunk's earliest memories were of living as a street urchin in the Flea Bottom slums of [[King's Landing]]. Ser [[Arlan of Pennytree]] took Dunk as a squire and raised him from a youth. Arlan's humble optimism made a positive impression on Dunk, though his gentle chidings of "Dunk the Lunk" damaged his self-confidence.

===The Hedge Knight===
When Dunk was around the age of 16, Arlan died suddenly on the way to Ashford. Dunk buried Arlan and decided to compete in the [[Ashford Tourney]] himself. On the way, he met a bald-headed boy named Egg, who begged to become his squire. Dunk eventually agreed. They camped just outside of Ashford under an elm tree and watched a shooting star fall from the evening sky. To Dunk, the moment symbolized the humble pleasures of the hedge knight lifestyle. In the morning, Dunk sold Arlan's equipment and purchased armor to his size. Needing a coat of arms, Dunk commisioned an attractive [[Dorne|Dornish]] puppeteer to paint a shooting star above an elm tree over a sunset field on his shield.

Dunk claimed to the Tourney organizers that Arlan knighted him before his death. The truth of this claim has not been revealed, though Dunk sometimes feels guilt for an unexplained reason. No one remembered Arlan, and Dunk eventually sought out [[Baelor Breakspear]], who had tilted against Arlan on one notable occasion. Baelor allowed Dunk to enter the Tourney. That evening, [[Aerion Targaryen]] attacked the puppeteer and Dunk rushed to her aide. After breaking several of Aerion's teeth, Dunk was attacked by Aerion's guards, but Egg, revealing his identity as Aegon Targaryen, protected him.

Aerion demanded a trial of seven, a kind of trial by combat involving seven combatants on each side. Egg helped Dunk find allies, which ultimately included Baelor himself. Dunk learned that the people were with him for being a knight who remembered his vows to protect the helpless. During the combat, Dunk faced off against Aerion, and his inexperience with lance and sword nearly got him killed. Using his superior strength and the wrestling skills he learned in Flea Bottom, Dunk bested Aerion and forced him to yield. After the trial, Baelor died of his wounds, and Dunk felt guilty for causing the death of the Prince. Now the heir, Egg's father Maekar asked Dunk to continue to squire Egg and serve as a positive influence on him. Dunk agreed, but refused to serve House Targaryen, preferring to remain a hedge knight and teach Egg the humility that Aerion never learned.

===The Sworn Sword===
After spedning time in Dorne looking for the puppeteer, Dunk and Egg went to the [[Reach]] and entered the service of Ser [[Eustace Osgrey]], a poor and broken landed knight. Dunk and Eustace's other knight Ser [[Bennis the Brown]] discover that peasants of Lady [[Rohanne Webber]] of [[Coldmoat]] have dammed the local stream. Bennis provoked Rohanne by cutting one of her peasants, and Dunk eventually went to Coldmoat to try to reason with her. Though sexual tension charged their meeting, Rohanne refused Dunk and told him about Eustace's support of [[Daemon Blackfyre]] during the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].

Shocked by the revelation, Dunk attempted to leave Eustace's service, but a fire in the nearby woods caused Dunk to suspect that Rohanne had already started her campaign against Eustace. After Bennis fled, leaving only Eustace's feeble peasant levies, Dunk knew that war was a lost cause. He disbanded Eustace's levies, but promised to face Rohanne with him. Meeting with Rohanne's forces, Dunk offered to settle the matter with a trial by combat. Rohanne agreed, and sent her overbearing steward Ser [[Lucas Longinch]] to fight Dunk in the stream. The Targaryens were not native to [[Westeros]], instead originally hailing from the freehold of [[Valyria]] on the eastern continent. Before the Doom of Valyria, the cataclysmic event that destroyed the ancient civilization, the Targaryens departed for the island citadel of Dragonstone off the Westerosi shore, which was at that time the westernmost Valyrian outpost. The Targaryens then abandoned the Valyrian gods and converted to the Andal faith of the Seven Gods, then the predominant religion in Westeros. A century after that cataclysm, [[Aegon I]], styled the Conqueror, began his conquest of mainland Westeros, landing with dragons and an army (at what would later be called [[King's Landing]]). Six of the seven kingdoms fell before him.

Uniquely among noble Westerosi families, the Targaryens follow the Valyrian practice of incestuous marriage, wedding brother to sister. Some Targaryens also have a high tolerance of heat, though they are by no means immune to fire.

The first great crisis for the Targaryen dynasty, the Dance of the Dragons, was a civil war between two of the children of King [[Viserys I]]. In addition to having a legtimate son by his wife, Queen Naerys, Aegon IV fathered four highborn bastards, later called the Great Bastards: [[Daemon Blackfyre]], [[Aegor Rivers]], [[Shiera Seastar]] and [[Brynden Rivers]]. On his deathbed he legitimized them, placing them in the line of succession, albeit after Daeron, his heir-apparent, who later ruled as King [[Daeron II]]. The oldest of the Great Bastards, Daemon, was seen by many as the better man and potentially a better king; he was also a Targaryen on both sides, since his mother was the infamous daughter of [[Aegon III]], [[Daena the Defiant]]. When Daemon was 14, Aegon IV had presented him with Blackfyre, the ancestral [[Valyrian steel]] sword of Targaryen kings, strengthening the perception by some that Aegon intended him to be his true heir. King Daeron II's heir, Prince [[Baelor Breakspear]], had perished in an accident during a [[Trial of Seven]], leaving his eldest son Valarr to inherit the crown. However a plague in 209 AL, the [[Great Spring Sickness]], killed King Daeron and both of Baelor's sons, Valarr and Matarys. This in turn left Daeron's second son Aerys to inherit. King Aerys I left no issue, and the crown was passed to his youngest brother Maekar, who reigned as King [[Maekar I]], the fourth son of King Daeron II. At the death of Maekar, his three oldest sons were disqualified for a number of reasons. His oldest, Daeron, called Daeron the Drunk, was a dissolute whore-monger who died of a sexually transmitted pox, and left only a feeble-witted daughter as a possible heir. His second son, [[Aerion Brightflame]], had died as a result of drinking wildfire in the mistaken belief it would turn him into a dragon.

A Great Council passed over Daeron's daughter and the infant son of Aerion Brightflame (presumably due to the memory of his father's cruelty and mental instability). Maekar I's third son, Aemon, had at that time already taken maester's vows, forswearing his inheritance. Though pressured to accept the crown, he refused and joined the Night's Watch, taking a second set of vows that separated him from his birthright.

The city is sometimes called the Bastard Son of Valyria.

==City layout==
The city is dominated by a massive stone statue called the Titan of Braavos, similar to the [[Colossus of Rhodes]], which serves as a lighted beacon, watchtower, and fortress. The Titan and a massive fleet defend the city in place of traditional city walls. Braavos is filled with temples to all religions. Even gods that have no more followers are honored in a temple called the Warrens. The [[Moonsingers]], who led the original Braavosi refugees to the islands, have the largest and most popular temple. Another temple of note is the House of Black and White, the headquarters of the [[Faceless Men]]

==Culture==
Braavos has a seafaring trade culture. Its merchant ships sail to many distant lands, and the [[Iron Bank]] lends money to foreign nations, including the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. Braavosi culture has created a unique form of swordfighting, called Water Dancing, that is suitable for shipboard conflicts. The style is a refined form of fencing in which the practitioner stands sideways and wields a slender blade. Pugnacious [[bravos]] fill the city, frequently dueling to display their skill.

During the battle Blackfyre came face-to-face with Ser [[Kingsguard#Famed Historical Members|Gwayne Corbray]] of the [[Kingsguard]], wielder of the [[Valyrian steel]] blade Lady Forlorn. Their duel was said to have lasted nearly an hour before Blackfyre gained the upper hand. However, by this time a second royalist force was approaching from the south led by Prince Baelor. Perhaps even more critical was that Bloodraven and his archers, the Raven's Teeth, captured and assumed a position atop the Weeping Ridge, which overlooked the battlefield and allowed them to rain arrows down among Blackfyre and his commanders. Bloodraven personally killed Daemon Blackfyre and his twin sons Aemon and Aegon. The rebels began to rout, but Bittersteel rallied them by leading a charge that decimated the Raven's Teeth, taking out Bloodraven's eye in the process. However, Prince Baelor's Dornish spearmen gained the battlefield and crushed the rebel army against Maekar's shield wall.

It is unknown how many men took part in the final battle, but it is known that more than ten thousand died in the engagement, earning it the name Redgrass Field. With Daemon dead and his forces defeated, the Rebellion was over.

==Aftermath==
Singers would later immortalize the Battle of Redgrass Field with the song "The Hammer and Anvil", referring to Baelor and Maekar's strategy.

Bittersteel was able to recover the sword Blackfyre from the battlefield and escape to the [[Free Cities]], where Blackfyre's other sons had already fled. In exile, Daemon's descendants continued their struggle for the Iron Throne. The last of his line, Maelys the Monsterous, was slain during the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]] by [[Barristan Selmy]], forever ending the Blackfyre threat to the throne.

Great heat eminates from dragons' bodies, to the point that they steam during cold nights. They breathe extremely hot fire and cook their meat before eating it. Dragons grow throughout their lives, but it is unknown how long they can live or how large they can grow. Dragons were discovered by the [[Valyria]]ns in the [[Fourteen Fires]], a ring of volcanoes on the Valyrian Peninsula. The Valyrians mastered the art of raising dragons and used them as weapons of war to carve out a massive empire. After the [[Doom of Valyria]], the Targaryens fled with three dragons to Westeros. [[Aegon I]] and his sisters each rode one of their dragons in the [[War of Conquest]] to consolidate six of the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule. The Targaryens built the Dragonpit in King's Landing to raise and house their dragons. Over the centuries, the Targaryen dragons died in various wars, and later generations did not grow as large as their parents. The last dragon was a stunted and misshapen thing, and died young during the reign of [[Aegon III]].

After their extinction, the only remnants of dragons that remained were their skulls and a few petrified eggs. The eggs were highly valuable, both for their beauty and exotic nature as well as their potential to hatch dragons. Many futile attempts were made to hatch dragons from petrified eggs. The [[Tragedy of Summerhall]] resulted from [[Aegon V]]'s attempt.

Ultimately, [[Daenerys Targaryen]] managed to hatch three dragon by sacrificing [[Mirri Maz Duur]] in her [[Khal Drogo|husband]]'s funeral pyre and stepping into the flames with her eggs. With Daenerys's exchange of life for life, the first three dragons in over a hundred years were born.

==Practices==
Knighthood is a martial position, and knights are expected to fight whenever there is a need for them. They traditionally fight as heavy cavalry, wearing plate armor and fighting from horseback with lance, sword, and shield. Some knights choose to fight with other weapons such as axes, hammers, and spears as well. They own at least one horse, and typically own two: a fierce warhorse and a milder horse for daily riding.

Knights display a coat-of-arms on their shield and surcoat to identify themselves. They generally wear their family arms. Those who do not have family arms, or do not wish to use them, can create their own. These personal arms often portray the manner in which the man achieved knighthood or have some other personal significance. Many knights wear large crests on their helms that embellish the theme of their arms. Wealthy knights often seek to further distinguish themselves by wearing ornate weapons and armor. The traditional process to becoming a knight has three stages.

A boy that becomes a page is attached to a knight, who becomes the boy's master. The page performs simple errands for the knight, who in turn begins to train the boy in vital skills, such as jousting and swordsmanship. Typical training involves sparring with blunted weapons and tilting at rings.

===Squire===
When a boy reaches adolescence, he graduates to being a squire. Squires join their masters in war, assisting them with their weapons and armor and fighting by their side in battles. Some squires choose to never become a full knight, and live the rest of their lives as squires. This may be because the individual does not have the inclination to live a knight's martial lifestyle, or does not have the funds to properly equip himself.

Any knight can proclaim another man a knight for whatever reason he chooses. This usually happens when a squire reaches adulthood and his master judges him worthy of accepting the responsibilities of a knight. A man who has not been raised in the knightly tradition can also be made a knight as a reward for service. This is often granted to soldiers or other smallfolk who have shown bravery or performed a great feat. Knighthood is considered valuable to smallfolk, as it raises a commoner's social standing. Social pressure generally prevents knights from giving out knighthoods for petty or selfish reasons.

The ceremony to create a knight can be simple or complex, however, it always involves the man kneeling before a knight and being tapped on the shoulders with a sword. Ceremonies usually have religious overtones involving the Faith of the Seven. When knighted, men are often charged in the name of the Seven to be just and honorable. More elaborate knighthood ceremonies involve the prospective knight sitting a vigil at a sept while wearing a roughspun tunic to show humility. Newly-knighted men are also sometimes anointed with seven oils by a septon. It is considered a great honor for the recipient when individuals of high status or fame perform the ceremony.

A hedge knight is a wandering knight without a master. Hedge knights are so named because they generally must sleep outdoors, under a hedge. Most hedge knights travel in search of employment and often attend jousts to make money and display their prowess to lords and landed knights in search of retainers. Less scrupulous hedge knights put their martial training to use by resorting to banditry. For this reason, hedge knights are often mistrusted and considered disreputable. The term hedge knight itself is considered disparaging.

===Sworn sword===
Some landless knights become sworn swords to other men, taking them as their master. They act as retainers for their master, taking food, shelter, and money in exchange for their services in war, should they be needed. During a campaign, lords often hires a large number of sworn swords on a temporary basis. After the campaign ends and the lord has no further need for so many knights, they are released and become hedge knights once again.

===Landed knight===
A landed knight is a knight that takes residence in a keep with accompanying land. They have their own peasants and men-at-arms, and may even take sworn swords. Landed knights are sworn to fight for the lord who holds dominion over their land. While the wealthiest knights manage more land than the poorest lords, landed knights do not have the authority to deliver justice in their land. Rather, they must appeal to their liege lord.

Lord of Highgarden, Defender of the Marches, High Marshal of the Reach, and Warden of the South. Mace Tyrell is a prematurely old and rather tedious man lacking in political savvy. His sole military accomplishment is the [[Siege of Storm's End]]. Though he has tried to use the [[Battle of Ashford]] as evidence of strategic brilliance, he actually had little to do with the fighting. He now serves only as the figurehead of his powerful house for his more intelligent family members.

Mace has always dreamed of his daughter being a Queen, thus when [[Renly]] and [[Loras]] presented the plan to crown Renly and have him wed [[Margaery]], they had his full support. However, King Renly’s rule did not last long enough for him to consummate the marriage as he was slain at Storm’s End. When word of this reached Mace, he marched some ten thousand men to Bitterbridge to plan his next move with his sons. They were joined by Petyr Baelish with an offer from King [[Joffrey]]. Forming an alliance with house Lannister he was soon joined by [[Tywin]]'s army to march on and defeat [[Stannis]] at the Blackwater. His reward was a seat on the [[Small Council]]. Later, he was charged with the capture of Storm’s End, but the siege was interrupted by news that Margaery had been imprisoned. He abandoned his charge and is currently marching his army on the city of King’s Landing.

===Alerie Hightower===
Lady Alerie Tyrell is Mace's wife and the daughter of Lord Leyton Hightower, the Tyrells' most powerful bannerman. She is described as simpering by [[Cersei Lannister]]. Physically, she is an elegant woman, tall and lovely with long silver hair worn in a braid, held with jeweled rings. She is the mother of Willas, Garlan, Loras and Margaery.

===Willas===
Mace's eldest son, the heir to Highgarden. He was crippled in a tourney mishap while facing [[Oberyn Martell]], the latest round in a longstanding feud between the two houses that continues to this day. Willas is described by others as a very intelligent, scholarly, and sensitive young man. He appears to hold no grudge on Oberyn for the accident, and communicates with him occasionally through letters.

Although he has not appeared directly in the story, Margaery and Olenna planned to marry him to Sansa Stark to gain Tyrell claim on the North, but the plot fell through. Tywin Lannister suggested him as a possible candidate for marriage to Cersei Lannister, but Mace refused the offer. The matter was dropped after Tywin's death. As of Mace's departure from Highgarden, Willas is ruling in his stead, and is attempting to fend off the raids from the Greyjoys and their Iron Fleet.

===Garlan===
Mace's second son, he is known as Garlan the Gallant. Although his younger brother is renowned in the joust, Loras admits that Garlan is superior with the sword, making Garlan one of the best swordsmen in Westeros. Garlan often trains against two or three men at once. He is married to Leonette Fossaway, daughter of a Tyrell banner-house. They have no children of yet.

Garlan wore Lord Renly's armor during the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], killing a dozen knights, including the famed warrior Ser Guyard Morrigen. The sight of what seemed to be a dead man leading the vanguard drove many of Stannis' men into panic. For his service on the Blackwater, Garlan was granted the Lordship of Brightwater Keep and the lands of the Florents, who were bannermen to the Tyrells but joined with Stannis. This reward makes Garlan a powerful lord in his own right. At Joffrey's wedding, he was one of a very few characters in the series to acknowledge and praise the abilities of Tyrion Lannister. During the wedding feast, he stood up for Tyrion when the drunken groom abused him, even rebuking the Joffrey in front of his court. During Tyrion's trial, Garlan attempted to defend him, but Tyrion realized that Cersei was using Garlan's honorable reputation to build a credible backbone for her case. Mace's only daughter, Margaery is an intelligent and shrewd young woman, very much the protégé of her cunning grandmother, Olenna. She is also very beautiful, with softly curling brown hair, brown eyes and a slender yet shapely figure.

Margaery was first married to King Renly Baratheon, as a pledge of loyalty from the Tyrell family. When he was killed, the Tyrells allied with the Lannisters, wedding Margaery to King Joffrey Baratheon. After Joffrey was poisoned at their wedding feast, Margaery was wed yet again, this time to Joffrey's younger brother [[Tommen]], a little boy who was then crowned king. In the months after their marriage, the [[Queen Regent Cersei]] schemed to dispose of Margaery and the Tyrells, taking advantage of Margaery's claim to still be a maid despite her marriage to Renly. This claim may or may not be true; Margaery's maidenhead was confirmed to have been ruptured by a Septa who inspected her, but as communicated to the readers by Cersei, highborn girls often have their maidenheads broken by horseback-riding.

While Tommen's queen, she did much to curry favor with the populace, visiting local markets and buying fresh fruits, breads and fish, and ordering dresses and such from many local seamstresses, and making great public shows of charity, all while travelling with a bright and colorful retinue. Margaery suggested several activities for Tommen in an effort to shape him into a successful ruler, such as riding in sight of his subjects and observing sessions of the Small Council. Cersei forbade all of Margaery's suggestions. Later, Margaery recognized the military threat created by the [[The Iron Islands|ironborn]] invasion of the Shield Islands, and was incredulous at Cersei's lack of understanding.

Cersei accused Margaery of adultery and treason, lining up an impressive, if untrue, array of conspirators and evidence; she was arrested, and imprisoned to await trial by the [[Faith]] at the Great Sept of Baelor. While in custody, she confronted Cersei, revealing that she knew that this was all the doings of her "good-mother" (mother-in-law), and that she knew Cersei wanted to remove her from a position of influence, perhaps by arranging for her death. Later, one of Cersei's key witnesses revealed her plots under torture, and Cersei soon found herself sharing Margaery's plight. Their fate is unknown.

===Olenna Redwyne===
Mace's mother, widow of Lord Luthor Tyrell, Lady Olenna was born of [[House Redwyne]], a powerful [[bannerhouse]] of House Tyrell. She is a wizened, cunning old woman with a wicked wit and a sharp tongue, which had earned her the sobriquet "the Queen of Thorns." She is often accompanied by seven-foot tall identical twin guards whom she calls "Left" and "Right". Olenna has two daughters, Janna, and Mina, Lady of [[the Arbor]] by virtue of her marriage to [[Lord Paxter Redwyne]].

Olenna was introduced in ''[[A Storm of Swords]]'', sharply questioning Sansa Stark on Joffrey's nature, apparently concerned about the rumors that followed the boy that was to wed her granddaughter. She refused to accept Sansa's half-truths and polite evasions. After getting Sansa to speak about Joffrey's cruelty and the beatings he gave her, Olenna began talking of taking Sansa away to Highgarden and marrying her to Willas. [[Petyr Baelish]] later claimed that Lady Olenna was King Joffrey's poisoner. The truth of this charge is unclear, but Olenna did appear to remove a bead from Sansa's hairnet, and it is strongly implied by several characters that the beads in this net were actually a deadly poison in disguise. Olenna also invited Sansa to return to Highgarden with her, possibly as a way of helping her escape Lannister persecution. Shortly after Margaery's wedding to Tommen, Olenna returned to Highgarden. However, before she left, she very subtly implied to Cersei that she believed that Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen were the products of incest between Cersei and Jaime, and that they were not Robert's trueborn children.

Lord of Riverrun and Lord paramount of the Trident, Hoster Tully is an old, sick man, torn by decade-old regrets. He was deeply saddened by his wife's death and never fully recovered from her death. As a younger man he was tall and broad, and grew portly in age, but is rendered shrunken by his illness. He traveled the Riverlands extensively and was fond of gazing at his rivers.

Years ago, Hoster forced his daughter Lysa to drink tansy tea in order to terminate her illegitimate pregnancy. On his deathbed, Hoster made delirious references to "tansy" and expressed regret, though Catelyn assumed that he was referring to an unknown girl. He died of his illness before regaining lucidity.

Minisa Whent Tully was the wife of Lord Hoster. At that time House Whent was the strongest bannermen to house Tully. She bore him three surviving children: two daughters and a son. Catelyn Tully Stark (a POV character) is Hoster's eldest child. On her way home, she encountered and arrested Tyrion, taking him to the [[The Vale|Vale of Arryn]] for trial, where he escaped execution. This arrest was a [[War of the Five Kings#Causes|linchpin]] of the [[War of the Five Kings|war]] that followed.

Catelyn met up with her son [[Robb Stark|Robb]] and aided him in leading his rebellion against [[Joffrey Baratheon|King Joffrey]]. She traveled to [[Battle of the Blackwater|Blackwater]] in an attempt to broker an alliance with surviving [[House Baratheon|Baratheon]] brothers [[House Baratheon#Stannis|Stannis]] and [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]], but was unsuccessful. She witnessed Renly's murder and took [[Brienne of Tarth]] into her service as an armswoman. Upon hearing of her younger sons' murder at the hand of [[Theon Greyjoy]], she freed prized Stark war hostage [[Jaime Lannister]] in a covert attempt to exchange him for her daughters, captives at King's Landing.

Robb placed Catelyn under house arrest at Riverrun, but allowed her to attend Edmure's wedding at the [[The Twins|Twins]]. Despite her wariness throughout the ceremony, she, Robb, and many of Robb's men were murdered by members of House Frey, an act of treachery that earned it the name "The Red Wedding". Three days later she was resurrected by [[Beric Dondarrion]], who gave his life for hers. Catelyn's wounds only partially healed, leaving her mutilated and without the ability to speak. She became consumed with the desire for vengeance over her family's betrayal and murder. She took the name "Lady Stoneheart" and assumed command of Dondarrion's outlaw band the [[Brotherhood Without Banners]]. She led the Brotherhood to mercilessly pursuing and executing everyone she perceived to be a traitor.

===Lysa===
Hoster's second child, Lysa Tully Arryn is the widow of the recently deceased [[Jon Arryn]] and mother of their one son, [[Robert Arryn|Robert]]. A flighty, unstable, sad woman, Lysa was unhappy in her marriage, arranged as part of a military alliance. Once slender and shyly sweet, she is now thick-bodied, pale and puffy of face, with restless watery blue eyes and a small petulant mouth. Upon the death of Lord John Arryn, she ruled in regency over the Vale for her son, and refused all her suitors, who were politically suitable Vale lords.

Lysa was secretly in love with her father's ward [[Petyr Baelish]], who had deflowered and impregnated her when they were young. Hoster Tully refused to allow them to marry and had the child aborted, though he later used its existence as proof of Lysa's fertility when wedding her to Jon Arryn, a man older than Hoster himself. Many years later, Baelish manipulated her into poisoning Jon Arryn and telling her sister Catelyn that the Lannisters were responsible. As the Lady Regent of the Vale, Lysa maintained a strict neutrality in the [[War of the Five Kings]], failing to call her banners and send aid to her sister's son, Robb Stark, and her father, Hoster Tully, though her posture rankled many of her vassals; she also was unresponsive to the threat posed by the increasingly active and hostile tribes of mountain men. It was her decision to try [[Tyrion Lannister]], and allow him a trial by combat via a chosen champion that allowed Tyrion to escape Catelyn Stark's custody. Near the conclusion of the War of the Five Kings, Petyr Baelish was dispatched to woo and wed Lady Lysa as a means to assuring the compliance of the Vale with the regime of King Joffrey, and return it to the King's Peace. Lysa ecstatically accepted his courtship and married him, but he murdered her shortly thereafter by defenestration, and used the minstrel Marillion as a scapegoat.

===Edmure===
Hoster's third child, only son, and heir, Edmure is a dutiful but rash young man, known more for his large heart than his sound head. He wishes to earn the respect of his father and protect his smallfolk. He is stocky, with shaggy auburn hair and a fiery beard.

Rescued by Stark forces following the battle of the Whispering Wood, Edmure swore fealty to his nephew Robb upon Robb's coronation and took part in his battle plans. He defended the Red Fork of the Trident against Tywin Lannister's forces, winning a battle at the Stone Mill, but in so doing he unwittingly ruined Robb's plan to draw Tywin out into a battle of Robb's own choosing. As amends Edmure agreed to marry Roslin Frey, a match needed to repair a shaky alliance with the tactically critical [[House Frey]]. His father's death shortly thereafter made him the Lord of Riverrun. His wedding became the site of a slaughter perpetrated by [[House Bolton|Bolton]] and [[House Frey|Frey]] men in league with the Lannisters. This betrayal became known as the Red Wedding. Edmure was captured and imprisoned by the Freys, while many other guests were killed, and the crown took Riverrun away from the Tullys. [[Jaime Lannister]] spared him from execution and forced him to make his uncle surrender Riverrun to the crown. Concerned for the fate of his unborn child, Edmure is presently a prisoner en route to the Lannister stronghold at Casterly Rock, where his family is to undergo a life of service to House Lannister.

Hoster's younger brother, Brynden is a great knight who earned renown during the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]]. His refusal to obey Hoster's order to marry caused a rift in the brothers' relationship for decades. A gruff but warm man, Brynden gained the nickname "Blackfish" when Hoster accused him of being the family's black sheep, which Brynden jokingly amended to reflect the Tullys's leaping-trout banner. His auburn hair has greyed with age, but he is still strong and fit, with a craggy face and deep blue eyes.

Brynden left the service of his niece Lysa Arryn once Tywin Lannister made signs of attacking the Riverlands, and upon Robb Stark's coronation allied himself with his cause, becoming ostensibly indispensable to his great-nephew as a tactician and warrior. He was named Warden of the Southern Marches and ordered to hold Riverrun while Robb took his forces north. He refused to surrender Riverrun even after King Robb's death. Eventually his nephew Edmure forced him to give up Riverrun to its new lords. Brynden escaped during the surrender. His present whereabouts are unknown.

As the turmoil of Eddard's death shakes his family, Rickon became largely unsupervised as his eldest brother and mother left to war, and his sisters were held captive at King's Landing. Alone with his crippled brother Bran at Winterfell, Rickon developed an unruly, often violent temper. His fear and rage were reflected in his direwolf, Shaggydog, who turned largely feral and attacked several people before being restrained. Several times, Bran's direwolf Summer was forced to fight Shaggydog into submission. Rickon hid with Bran in the crypts during Theon Greyjoy's brief reign at Winterfell. When Winterfell was sacked and burned by Ramsay Bolton, the brothers were separated for their safety. The wildling woman Osha took Rickon and Shaggydog to parts unknown.

However, Benjen disappeared while ranging beyond the Wall shortly after he and Jon Snow arrived at Castle Black. Brandon won their duel, but did not kill him in concession to Catelyn's pleas. Brandon was on his way to Riverrun to wed Catelyn when word reached him of his sister Lyanna's supposed abduction by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Brandon and four companions rode to King's Landing and threatened Rhaegar's life. They were arrested by King [[House Targaryen#Aerys II|Aerys]] and charged with plotting Rhaegar's murder. Their fathers were called to court to answer the charges. Brandon died while trying to save his father from being burned to death by King Aerys.

Eddard's only sister, Lyanna died at the end of Robert's Rebellion. She is described by many people who knew her as a spirited young woman and an excellent rider. She was said to exhibit the same Stark coloring as her brother Ned, and was regarded as beautiful.

Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon, who was infatuated with her. Lyanna, however, was not as ardent in her love for Robert, and was fully aware of his philandering ways. However, Prince [[House Targaryen#Rhaegar|Rhaegar Targaryen]] crowned her Queen of Love and Beauty after winning the [[Tourneys in A Song of Ice and Fire#Harrenhal tourney|Harrenhal tourney]], passing over his wife, the Dornish princess Elia, in her favor. The exact nature of her relationship with Rhaegar is not presently clear, but shortly thereafter Rhaegar apparently abducted her. Robert and Brandon Stark believed that Lyanna had been taken against her will. Their anger over the event triggered [[Robert's Rebellion]]. After the sack of King's Landing, Eddard and six companions went to retrieve Lyanna at the building Rhaegar had named the "tower of joy". They fought three [[Kingsguard]] knights stationed there, who killed all but Eddard and Howland Reed. Eddard found Lyanna dying in a "bed of blood" and clutching a withered wreath of blue roses. She forced him to make a promise to her, the contents of which are unknown, but which haunted Eddard for the rest of his life. She was sixteen years old at the time of her death.

==History, traits and customs==
The Targaryens were not native to [[Westeros]], instead originally hailing from the freehold of [[Valyria]] on the eastern continent. Before the Doom of Valyria, the cataclysmic event that destroyed the ancient civilization, the Targaryens departed for the island citadel of Dragonstone off the Westerosi shore, which was at that time the westernmost Valyrian outpost. The Targaryens then abandoned the Valyrian gods and converted to the Andal faith of the Seven Gods, then the predominant religion in Westeros. A century after that cataclysm, Aegon I, styled the Conqueror, began his conquest of mainland Westeros, landing with dragons and an army (at what would later be called [[King's Landing]]). Six of the seven kingdoms fell before him.

Uniquely among noble Westerosi families, the Targaryens follow the Valyrian practice of incestuous marriage, wedding brother to sister. The phrase "blood of the dragon" refers to a number of typical Targaryen features: silvery-gold (or platinum) hair and violet eyes. Some Targaryens also have a high tolerance of heat, though they are by no means immune to fire.

The Targaryens are known as dragonlords, and seem to be closer to dragons than other men are. Aegon I introduced dragons to Westeros when he conquered it, and dragons were kept and ridden by the Targaryens until the last one perished in the reign of Aegon III Dragonbane.

Probably due to their incestuous practices, the Targaryens are prone to madness; King Jaehaerys II said that with the birth of a new Targaryen the gods tossed a coin to decide whether the child would be great or mad.

===Dragonstone===

Dragonstone is one of a group of islands in the Narrow Sea, close to the Westerosi shore. It used to be the westernmost outpost of the freehold of Valyria. For centuries, the island has been the seat of House Targaryen, and after the conquest, the Targaryen [[heir apparent]] was styled Prince of Dragonstone. On the nearby island of Driftmark, House Velaryon is another Valyrian house to survive the Doom.

The island is dominated by a huge fortress, its towers shaped like dragons and decorated with a thousand gargoyles, and an active volcano, the Dragonmont. Beneath the mountain there are rich deposits of [[dragonglass]].

The last Targaryen dragon was a deformed and sterile creature that died very young.

It is not clearly understood what caused the last dragons to die out. A legend holds that [[Aegon III]] poisoned them, but Archmaester [[Marwyn]] suggested that the [[Maesters]] were somehow responsible. Other characters have also claimed that raising dragons in enclosed spaces was unnatural and stunted their growth.

===Dance of Dragons===
The first great crisis for the Targaryen dynasty, the Dance of the Dragons, was a civil war between two of the children of King [[Viserys I]]. Viserys had three children by his first queen, a daughter of [[House Arryn]]: two sons who died in infancy and a daughter, [[Rhaenyra Targaryen|Rhaenyra]]. Lacking a son to succeed him, Viserys began to train Princess Rhaenyra to be his [[Heir apparent|heiress-apparent]]. Young Rhaenyra was included in discussions of the affairs of state, and was allowed to participate in meetings of the Small Council. Many of the nobles took note, and Rhaenyra soon acquired a clique of adherents and supporters.

However, after Viserys's queen died, the king remarried, this time to a [[House Hightower|Hightower]]. The new Hightower queen quickly produced three sons and a daughter, the eldest son named [[Aegon II|Aegon]]. Nonetheless, Rhaenyra's place in the succession seemed undisturbed; Viserys even formalized the succession in his will.

Upon the death of King [[Viserys I]], the Lord Commander of the [[Kingsguard]], Ser Criston Cole, later called 'the Kingmaker', defied the king's will, and crowned Prince Aegon as Aegon II. Ser Criston's motivations for doing so are unclear, but it was reputed that he and Rhaenyra were lovers, and their affair ended badly, adding a personal dimension to the conflict. In any event, many of the lords of the realm were aware of Viserys' wish to have Rhaenyra succeed him as Westeros's first [[queen regnant]], and threw their support behind the princess. Doubtless, many of them were also the same clique who has spent years currying favor with the presumptive future queen. Conversely, Aegon II had the support of many other lords, and a great armed conflict engulfed Westeros.

In circumstances not yet fully revealed, Rhaenyra came to be put to death as a traitor at the hands of her brother Aegon II, who had her eaten by his dragon as her son [[Aegon III|Aegon]] watched. Later still, Aegon II died, and was succeeded by his nephew, Rhaenyra's son, who would reign as Aegon III, also called Aegon Dragonbane.

Since the Dance, House Targaryen has practiced a highly modified version of agnatic primogeniture, placing female claimants in the line of succession behind all possible male ones, even collateral relations. (See also [[Daena the Defiant]], [[Daeron II]])

One of the biggest threats to the Targaryen line developed out of a dynastic dispute involving the children of King [[Aegon IV]]. The conflict culminated in the establishment of a separate Targaryen branch, House Blackfyre, and open war that divided the realm, known as the Blackfyre Rebellion. Told in flashbacks, it is a major plot point in the novella ''[[The Sworn Sword]]''.

In addition to having a legtimate son by his wife, Queen Naerys, Aegon IV fathered four highborn bastards, later called the Great Bastards: [[Daemon Blackfyre]], [[Aegor Rivers]], [[Shiera Seastar]] and [[Brynden Rivers]]. On his deathbed he legitimized them, placing them in the line of succession, albeit after Daeron, his heir-apparent, who later ruled as King [[Daeron II]]. Complicating matters, Daeron was rumoured to have been fathered by Aegon's brother [[Aemon the Dragonknight]], casting doubts over his legitimacy and right to rule.

King Daeron was a cultured, scholarly man and reigned over a sophisticated court, attended by [[maesters]] and learned men, which was perceived as effete and overly-refined, not pleasing to many of his more martial courtiers and nobles. His marriage to the [[Dorne|Dornish]] princess Myriah [[House Martell|Martell]] introduced foreign influences and manners to the court, further adding to the displeasure with his reign.

The oldest of the Great Bastards, Daemon, was seen by many as the better man and potentially a better king; he was also a Targaryen on both sides, since his mother was the infamous daughter of [[Aegon III]], [[Daena the Defiant]]. When Daemon was 14, Aegon IV had presented him with Blackfyre, the ancestral [[Valyrian steel]] sword of Targaryen kings, strengthening the perception by some that Aegon intended him to be his true heir. After his father's death, Daemon took the surname Blackfyre, and eventually rose in rebellion against King Daeron, aided by his half-brother Aegor and many other noble houses. The rebellion ended at the battle of Redgrass Field, with the deaths of Daemon Blackfyre and his twin sons, Aegon and Aemon. Daemon left other children, and House Blackfyre continued to be a threat to the main Targaryen line until the last pretender was slain in the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]].

===Great Council===
A series of circumstances culminating in a Great Council in 233 AL led to the crowning of [[Aegon V]], called “The Unlikely” for being the fourth son of a fourth son and at some time very far down the line of succession.

King Daeron II's heir, Prince [[Baelor Breakspear]], had perished in a tourney accident, leaving his eldest son Valarr to inherit the crown. However a plague in 209 AL, the [[Great Spring Sickness]], killed King Daeron and both of Baelor's sons, Valarr and Matarys. This in turn left Daeron's second son Aerys to inherit. King Aerys I left no issue, and the crown was passed to his youngest brother Maekar, who reigned as King [[Maekar I]], the fourth son of King Daeron II. At the death of Maekar, his three oldest sons were disqualified for a number of reasons. His oldest, Daeron, called Daeron the Drunk, was a dissolute whore-monger who died of a sexually transmitted pox, and left only a feeble-witted daughter as a possible heir. His second son, [[Aerion Brightflame]], had died as a result of drinking wildfire in the mistaken belief it would turn him into a dragon.

A Great Council passed over Daeron's daughter and the infant son of Aerion Brightflame (presumably due to the memory of his father's cruelty and mental instability). Maekar I's third son, Aemon, had at that time already taken maester's vows, forswearing his inheritance. Though pressured to accept the crown, he refused and joined the Night's Watch, taking a second set of vows that separated him from his birthright.

Hence the crown was passed on to the last son, Aegon, the fourth son of a fourth son, who was crowned as Aegon V, called Aegon the Unlikely.

Second son of [[Aerys II]], Viserys fled [[Westeros]] along with his sister Daenerys, and spent the next fifteen years wandering the [[Free Cities]]. He is a cruel, ambitious man, blunt of speech and given to violent mood swings. He hopes to return to Westeros and reclaim his father's throne. He is often mocked as the Beggar King since he must rely on the generosity of those sympathetic to his cause.

Viserys arranged the marriage of Daenerys to Khal Drogo, hoping to buy Drogo's armies with her, and to use them to reclaim the Seven Kingdoms. Viserys, while ambitious, was also blind to reality; he saw himself as a rightful, victorious savior to the people of Westeros, due respect and adoration, never noticing that even his sister and his sworn knight [[Jorah Mormont]] scorned his petty, vindictive nature. Despite a constant loss of dignity and standing among Drogo's ''khalasar'' for his outrageous behavior, he continued to demand Drogo's aid and verbally abuse his sister until Drogo "crowned" him with molten gold. Viserys did not survive, although his plan did, as Daenerys' marriage to Drogo gained her control of the khal's army.

===Aegon I===
The founding member of the Targaryen dynasty and conqueror of Westeros, he earned the name "Aegon the Conqueror" and "Aegon the Dragon". He took his two sisters, [[Visenya Targaryen|Visenya]] and [[Rhaenys Targaryen|Rhaenys]], as his brides and sired children on them both. Aegon and his sisters led a small army from their island home of Dragonstone into Westeros beginning the [[War of Conquest]]. With the aid of his sisters and their three dragons, Vhagar, Meraxes, and Balerion the Black Dread, they defeated or subjugated six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros and founded a dynasty that would last almost three hundred years. After the war he took the swords of his defeated enemies and had them melted and reforged them into a throne. He spent the rest of his reign consolidating his power and building his capital at [[King's Landing]]. Physically he appeared as a prototypical warrior: tall, broad, and powerful. He wielded the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre in battle. It was lost in the Blackfyre rebelion and its whereabouts are now unknown.

The older of [[Aegon I]]'s sisters, Visenya was apt to dress as a warrior, with her hair in braided coils or bound in rings, and wielded a [[Valyrian steel]] sword named Dark Sister, crafted for a woman's hand and its whereabout are now unknown. The younger of [[Aegon I]]'s sisters, Rhaenys was more typically feminine than her sister, and less volatile. She also participated in the [[War of Conquest]] by riding a dragon in battle. She was the mother of [[Aenys I]], and it was her line of progeny that comprised the bulk of the Targaryen dynasty. [[Daenerys Targaryen|Daenerys Stormborn]] is the last of her descendants.

===Aenys I===
The son of [[Aegon I]] and [[Rhaenys Targaryen|Rhaenys]], he became king after his father. Despite having at least one son, Jaehaerys (later King [[Jaehaerys I]]), he was succeeded by his notoriously brutal half-brother/cousin [[House Targaryen#Maegor I|Maegor the Cruel]], who had served as his Hand during his reign.

===Maegor I===
The son of [[Aegon I]] and [[Visenya Targaryen|Visenya]], Maegor was the younger brother of [[Aenys I]] and was his Hand during his rule. Maegor ruled as Maegor I, but came be to called "Maegor the Cruel". Under unknown circumstances he came to the Iron Throne ahead of his brother's son, Jaehaerys. It was in Maegor's reign that the [[Faith Militant]] was subdued and disbanded. Maegor's repression of the Faith Militant was characterized by its ruthless and brutal methods, including putting bounties on the heads of each of its sworn members. Maegor was also known for having Maegor's Holdfast constructed, and upon its completion, had its builders executed so only he would know the secrets. Maegor was notorious for having multiple wives, often more than one at a time, and executing several of them for failing to produce an heir. Maegor was killed on the Iron Throne by unknown means, some say by the Throne itself.

===Jaehaerys I===
The first-born child of [[House Targaryen#Aenys I|King Aenys I]] who became king upon the death of his brutal uncle [[Maegor the Cruel]], Jaehaerys was renowned for his wisdom and for negotiating a peace with the Faith, earning himself the name 'The Conciliator.' Jahaerys ruled for over five decades and brought to the realm a time of great peace, aided by his beloved sister, the adored [[queen consort]], Good Queen [[Alysanne Targaryen|Alysanne]].

===Alysanne===
The wife and sister of King [[Jaehaerys I]], known as Good Queen Alysanne. She enjoyed riding her dragon to remote portions of Westeros and convinced her husband to abolish the First Night privilege of the nobles. Alysanne was also responsible for gifting the Night Watch with the "[[New Gift]]". One of the castles, Snowgate, was renamed Queensgate in her honor. Alysanne lived into old age with her husband and was renowned for her charities.

===Viserys I===
The son and heir of [[Jaehaerys I]] and Good Queen Alysanne. He was the father of [[House Targaryen#Rhaenyra|Rhaenyra]]. Rhaenyra's mother died before she could produce for him a male heir, so he groomed Rhaenyra to succeed him and become the first Queen in the Targaryen line. Years afterward, however, he remarried. This second marriage produced a son, [[Aegon II|Aegon]]. Although Rhaenyra remained his designated successor, upon his death, a dynastic struggle occurred between his two children that would later be termed the [[Dance of Dragons]].

===Rhaenyra===
The first-born child of King Viserys I, and for a period the [[Heir presumptive|heiress-presumptive]] of her father. She was groomed by her father to be the first [[Queen regnant|ruling queen]] of Westeros, and acquired a clique of flattering courtiers. In her later adolescence, her father remarried, and begat several sons, the eldest named Aegon.

On the death of her father, Ser Criston Cole of the [[Kingsguard]] defied King Viserys's will and crowned her younger half-brother Aegon as [[Aegon II]], thus setting off the civil war known as the [[Dance of the Dragons]]. Ultmately, [[Aegon II]] prevailed and had Rhaenyra fed to his dragon as her son Aegon watched. In time, Rhaenyra's son Aegon would succeed his uncle as King [[Aegon III]].

Rhaenyra the woman was very proud and stubborn, and prone to twirling her rings while anxious. She styled herself after the warrior-queen [[Visenya Targaryen|Visenya]], wearing braided coils of hair, although she was not athletic or martial. She was heavy-set and loved luxurious and sumptuous garments. Though Rhaenyra could be charming, she was quick to anger and never forgot a slight. During the [[Dance of the Dragons]], she wore her father's crown.

===Aegon II===

Son of King Viserys I, and half-brother to Rhaenyra. Following the death of their father, he became a rival claimant to the Iron Throne. He was crowned as King by Ser Criston Cole of the [[Kingsguard]], despite their father's inclusion of Rhaenyra as his successor in his will. The dynastic struggle was termed the [[Dance of Dragons]]. Although Aegon II prevailed over his sister in the struggle, his nephew (Rhaenyra's son) Aegon III succeeded him to the throne.

===Aegon III===
The eldest son of [[Rhaenyra Targaryen|Rhaenyra]], Aegon III succeeded his uncle, [[Aegon II]], at the conclusion of the [[Dance of the Dragons]]. He came to be known as "Aegon Dragonbane", and was said to have always walked with a great grief that marked him.

===Daeron I===
The eldest son of [[Aegon III]], handsome and dashing. Called the "Young Dragon", he ascended the throne at fourteen years of age and gained repute for being a canny warrior and conqueror. Daeron I was the first of the Targaryen kings to conquer Dorne, though in his writings of The Conquest of Dorne, he exaggerated the numbers of his foes to make his conquest seem greater. The conquest lasted a fortnight when a clever trap killed the [[steward]] Daeron left to rule Dorne, and there was a great uprising by the Dornish. Daeron lost forty thousand men trying to hold Dorne, culminating in his own death during the uprising. He was eighteen years of age.

===Baelor I===
A son of [[Aegon III]], Baelor succeeded his brother [[Daeron I]]. He came to be known as "the Blessed" or "the Septon King," as he was a pious man, who had taken vows as a Septon.

Some remember Baelor as a great and holy man, given to deep prayer and fasting to experience religious visions, and honor him for his contributions to the Faith, including the construction of the Great Sept in Kings Landing. Others regard him as a weak, simpering fool, prone to hallucinations and bad decisions brought about by excessive zealotry.

Upon Daeron's death, Baelor is said to have walked the Boneway barefoot to make peace with Dorne. It is also said that he saved his cousin [[Aemon the Dragonknight]] from a snake pit, where he was bitten many times by the vipers whose vemon could not kill him because of his faith in the Seven; this tale may simply be a metaphorical version of his visit to Dorne, referring to Dorne itself as a "snake pit," and the Dornish, "vipers."

Baelor earned the contempt of his nobles by forcing a lord to wash the feet of a leper, and making an eight year old boy High Septon. Baelor's reign was marked by imprisoning his sisters, Rhaena, Elaena, and [[Daena Targaryen]], to whom he was married, in the portion of the Red Keep later known as Maidenvault to prevent their beauty from tempting him to sin; indeed, he never consummated his marriage to his sister-wife [[Daena Targaryen]]. Baelor starved himself to death by prolonged fasting to cleanse himself of lust.

===Viserys II===
Brother of [[Aegon III]] and son of [[Rhaenyra Targaryen]], Viserys is not remembered fondly in Westeros as some accuse him of poisoning his nephew [[Baelor I]] to gain the throne and doing nothing once he gained it. In truth, Viserys as Hand to the former kings was instrumental in keeping the realm intact while [[Daeron I|Daeron]] warred and [[Baelor I|Baelor]] prayed. Viserys reigned for a year, but he truly ruled and preserved the land for much longer.

===Daena the Defiant===
The eldest daughter of [[Aegon III]], Daena was married to her brother [[Baelor I]], but the marriage was never consummated. When Baelor ascended to the Iron Throne, he dissolved their marriage and confined her, along with her sisters, to a section of the Red Keep to avoid sexual temptation. In an attempt to shame her brother, Daena adopted a white dress and vowed to wear it until she was bedded. It backfired, however as Baelor preferred her in white as it made her look pure. Daena and her sisters, Rhaena and Elaena, became known as the "Three Maidens in the Tower," and their prison was soon called the Maidenvault. Prior to her imprisonment, she was athletic and a skilled rider. Daena was a willful woman, and had made several attempts at escape. While imprisoned, she had a secret affair with her cousin, the future [[Aegon IV]], and bore his child. She became known as Daena the Defiant when she refused to name the father of her bastard. Her son grew up to become [[Daemon Blackfyre]], a pretender to the Iron Throne.

===Aegon IV===
Called "the Unworthy," Aegon is remembered as one of the worst kings of the Targaryen dynasty. Handsome in his youth, and an infamous womaniser, he fathered countless bastards on his many mistresses, and legitimised them all on his deathbed, old, fat, and corrupt.

===Aemon the Dragonknight===
The second son of [[Viserys II]], Aemon joined the [[Kingsguard]] at the age of seventeen. Songs speak of his doomed love for his brother's queen, his own sister, [[Naerys Targaryen|Naerys]]. It is rumoured that Prince Aemon was the father of [[Daeron II]] Targaryen. Prince Aemon has been referred to as the noblest knight who ever lived. He defended the honor of his sister, Naerys, against the slanders of the "evil" Ser Morgil. He also won a tournament, disguised as a mystery knight known only as the Knight of Tears, in which he named Naerys Queen of Love and Beauty. He died defending his elder brother and King, [[Aegon IV]], during an assassination attempt by two brothers of House Toyne in retribution for Aemon's execution of their third brother. Prince Aemon bore the [[Valyrian steel]] sword Dark Sister.

===Naerys===
The sister and wife of her brother [[Aegon IV]], mother of [[Daeron II]] and reputed beloved of her other brother, [[House Targaryen#Aemon the Dragonknight|Ser Aemon the Dragonknight]] of the [[Kingsguard]], who defended her against the slanders of the knight Ser Morgil. Queen Naerys, though famed in romantic songs celebrating the affair between herself and [[Aemon the Dragonknight]], was a delicate woman, gentle and soft. Upon the birth of her son Daeron, she asked Aegon to release her from her marital vows, so she may take holy vows and become a [[Faith of the Seven#Clergy|septa]], though Aegon refused. Doleful and somber, the only two men to ever make her smile or laugh were her son Daeron and brother Aemon. The supposed affair between Queen Naerys and Aemon was used to question the legitimacy of her son, [[Daeron II|Daeron]]. This added support to [[Daemon Blackfyre]]'s insurrection, propelled by Daemon's claim that he was the son of [[Aegon IV]], whereas Daeron was the son of [[House Targaryen#Aemon the Dragonknight|Ser Aemon]]. The issue of the dynastic succession developed into the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].

===Daeron II===
Daeron II was acknowledged as the eldest son and heir of [[Aegon IV]] and his sister and wife, [[Naerys Targaryen|Naerys]]. Named, "the Good," Daeron is credited with bringing [[Dorne]] into the Seven Kingdoms through a dual marriage pact. While still a prince, he married Princess Myriah of [[House Martell]], and later his sister married Prince Maron Martell, the ruling Prince of Dorne. Princess Myriah brought many of her native manners and customs with her, and also many Dornish nobles as well, all serving to give life in the Red Keep a foreign flavor, and alienating many of Daeron's nobles and courtiers.

Daeron was a physically unimpressive man who kept company with [[maesters]] and other learned men, which put him at odds with the Westerosi warrior culture. After ascending to the [[Iron Throne]], Daeron survived a rebellion against his reign led by his half-brother [[Daemon Blackfyre]], later called the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].
Daeron and Myriah had four sons: [[Baelor Breakspear]], [[Aerys I]], Rhaegal, [[Maekar I]], and at least one daughter, Aelinor, who was her brother Aerys's queen. Their eldest son, his [[Heir apparent|heir-apparent]], Baelor, the Prince of Dragonstone, served as his father's Hand during the later portion of his reign, and was responsible for the successful resolution of the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]]. King Daeron II died during the [[Great Spring Sickness]], along with many of his grandchildren.

===Brynden Rivers===
Brynden Rivers, an albino, called "Bloodraven" for a birthmark on his face, was a legitimized Great Bastard of Aegon IV and Mylessa Blackwood, his sixth mistress. His personal arms were a white dragon with red eyes breathing red flame on a black field. Another of Aegon IV's Great Bastards, Shiera Seastar, was his mistress. During the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]] he remained loyal to Daeron II and fought for him at the Battle of the Redgrass Field. During that battle, he killed his half-brother, the pretender Daemon Blackfyre, with his bow; for this, people would name him a kinslayer. At the same battle he lost an eye fighting another rebellious half-brother, Aegor “Bittersteel” Rivers. Though Brynden carried the [[Valyrian steel]] sword Dark Sister, he preferred his weirwood longbow and was an expert archer. After the rebellion he became Hand of the King to Aerys I. As "Lord Bloodraven" he was rumored to be a sinister sorcerer, effectively ruling the kingdom “with spies and spells”. A song about Bloodraven, ''A Thousand Eyes, and One'', is still sung almost a century later. The events of ''[[The Sworn Sword]]'' take place during his reign as Hand, though he does not personally take part in the story. Bloodraven was imprisoned and sent to the [[Wall]] ''ca.'' 233 AL by King Aegon V, eventually becoming Lord Commander of the [[Night's Watch]].

===Daemon Blackfyre===
Daemon was the bastard son of [[Daena Targaryen]] and [[Aegon IV]]. After his father took the throne, Daemon distinguished himself during a tournament melee by besting a score of other squires. Afterwards, King Aegon acknowledged Daemon as his son and presented him with Blackfyre, the [[Valyrian steel]] sword of kings. He matured into a man of considerable charm and strength. He mastered all weapons of the battlefield, but with the sword he was described as "the Warrior himself". Targaryen on both sides, he possessed almost inhuman beauty, with deep purple eyes and long, silver-gold hair. He won friends easily and women were drawn to him. After King Aegon legitimized all his bastards on his deathbed, Daemon claimed the Iron Throne and led a rebellion against his half-brother, [[Daeron II]], rallying many notable warriors to his side. He took the name of Blackfyre for his house and displayed the inverted Targaryen arms, a black dragon on red. Shiera was the last of the Great Bastards of Aegon IV, sired upon the ninth and last of his mistresses, Lady Serenei of Lys, the last daughter of an ancient but impoverished line of Valyrian nobility. Shiera's mother was disliked by Aegon's courtiers and considered cold and haughty; it was rumored that she was much older than the king, practicing dark arts to retain her youth and beauty. Considered by many the most lovely of Aegon's mistresses, Serenei died in childbed, bringing forth Shiera (whose name means 'Star of the Sea'). Sheira was renowned as a famous beauty and seductress, with long typically Targaryen silver-gold hair, and a heart-shaped face. Although she had two mismatched eyes, (one blue, the other green), it was said that the "defect" only enhanced her beauty. She was a great reader, even at an early age, spoke many languages, and maintained a large and arcane library. She also was reputed to share her mother's skill in the dark arts. Shiera never married, but took many lovers, and numerous duels were fought for her favor. Her half-brother Bloodraven was her most ardent suitor, and repeatedly proposed marriage to her. Although she refused to marry him, she did share her bed with him. In the Sworn Sword, she is widely known as Lord Bloodraven's mistress, and there are rumours that she bathes in the blood of maidens to retain her beauty. She was known to possess a famous necklace, alternating sapphires and emeralds to compliment her unusual eyes.

===Aerion===
Called "Brightflame", "Brightfire", or "Aerion the Monstrous", this prince is remembered as one of the clearest examples of Targaryen madness. Cruel, vain, and arrogant, he thought himself a dragon in human form. After a disastrous trial of seven instigated by Aerion that took life of Baelor Breakspear, his father Maekar sent Aerion to Lys and the Free Cities, where he remained for some years. Aerion died when he drank a cup of wildfire, believing that it would turn him into a dragon. He left an infant son, who despite his stronger claim to the Iron Throne, was passed over by the Great Council upon the death of Maekar I in favour of Aegon V. He is the primary antagonist in ''[[The Hedge Knight]]''.

The first-born child of King [[House Targaryen#Daeron II|Daeron the Good]] and Myriah Martell, Baelor first gained renown for leading the Dornishmen to the Redgrass Field to defeat [[House Targaryen#Daemon Blackfyre|Daemon Blackfyre]]. Baelor was Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne, and served as his father's Hand for the later part of his reign; he was the shining hope of the realm with the potential to be a great king. Tragically, Baelor was accidentally slain by his brother [[Maekar I|Maekar]], in a trial by combat brought about by [[Aerion Targaryen|Aerion]]'s bad behavior. His sons, Valarr and Matarys, and his father followed him to the grave during the [[Great Spring Sickness]].

The youngest son of Daeron II, the Prince of Summerhall, who first gained renown in the Blackfyre Rebellion for helping to defeat Daemon Blackfyre's forces on Redgrass Field. Maekar was greatly bitter of his sons being outshone by his older brother Baelor's own and often turned a blind eye to the sadistic Aerion's indiscretions. A disastrous trial by combat where Maekar accidentally killed Baelor, an act which would haunt him for the rest of his days and which opened his eyes to what Aerion truly was, caused him to temporarily exile his son to the Free Cities. Maekar was further resentful of his brother Aerys I not naming him Hand upon his ascension to the throne, rather appointing Bloodraven, Maekar's uncle. Upon ascending to the throne, after all his brothers had died without issue, Maekar had Bloodraven imprisoned, and eventually died in combat with a rebellious lord.

===Aegon V===
The fourth son of a fourth son, Aegon was called "the Unlikely," and became king only after a Great Council that bypassed a number of candidates earlier in the line of succession, and after his elder brother Aemon refused the throne. He was a strong and handsome man, but also friendly and approachable.

Daenerys was born as a fierce storm struck Dragonstone, and so was called "Stormborn." Her mother died as a result of the labor. Shortly thereafter, Dragonstone fell to the rebel forces, and Daenerys and Viserys were smuggled away to the Free City of Braavos by a loyalist knight, Willem Darry. In Braavos, they lived in a house with a red door. Ser Willem was old and sickly, but he treated Daenerys kindly. After his death, his servants drove Daenerys and Viserys from the house. Daenerys wept as they were forced out, and the house with the red door became her symbol for the childhood she had never known.

Viserys and Daenerys considered themselves the rightful rulers of Westeros: Viserys III, King of the Seven Kingdoms, and his heiress-presumptive Daenerys, the Princess of Dragonstone. In the years that followed, she and Viserys wandered among the nine [[Free Cities]] looking for aid, which earned Viserys the mocking title of "the Beggar King". At her wedding, the exiled knight [[Jorah Mormont]] pledged his service to Daenerys. He would become her closest companion. Two of Daenerys's wedding gifts were a magnificent silver filly and a set of three petrified dragon eggs.

Daenerys, her brother, and the ''khalasar'' traveled east to the only Dothraki city, Vaes Dothrak, in the heart of the [[Dothraki Sea]], where Daenerys was presented to the crones known as the ''Dosh Khaleen''. Viserys grew increasingly impatient, demanding that Drogo help him invade Westeros. Meanwhile, Daenerys, now fourteen, became pregnant with Drogo's child. During a drunken rage, Viserys broke Dothraki law by drawing a blade in the holy city, inciting Khal Drogo to "crown" him by dumping a pot of molten gold over his head, killing him.

As Drogo's ''khalasar'' continued west, conquering foreign lands, Daenerys saved a [[Lhazareen]] priestess named Mirri Maz Duur, who was labeled as a ''maegi'', from rape and possible murder at the hands of Drogo's men, and took her into service. When Drogo took a wound in battle that threatened his life, Daenerys commanded Mirri Maz Duur to heal him. But the ''maegi'' betrayed her, leaving Drogo a brain-dead husk and slaying Rhaego in the womb. Daenerys ended Drogo's life herself, and was abandoned by most of his ''khalasar.'' She ordered Mirri Maz Duur burned on Drogo's funeral pyre, and entered the flames herself with her dragon eggs. Daenerys accompanied them to Qarth, hoping for aid in conquering Westeros from the merchant emissary Xaro Xhoan Daxos, but the merchants of Qarth were only interested in obtaining her dragons.

Daenerys turned to one of the other emissaries, a warlock called Pyat Pree. Against the judgment of her friends and counselors, she agreed to visit the warlock's leaders, the Undying Ones, in their hall, the House of the Undying. After viewing several mysterious portents and hearing vague prophecies, Daenerys realized that the warlocks were plotting against her, and destroyed the House of the Undying with the aid of Drogon. With nowhere else to turn, Daenerys considered the suggestions of the third emissary, the masked woman Quaithe of [[Asshai]], that she must go further east to conquer the west.

While unsuccessfully seeking passage out of Qarth, Daenerys noticed that two men she did not recognize were following her and Mormont. Daenerys became distracted and was off her guard when a Sorrowful Man assassin tried to poison her with a [[manticore]]. One of her mysterious followers interceded and knocked the manticore away just in time to thwart the murder. The two men introduced themselves as agents sent by Magister Illyrio. One of them, a huge eunuch and former pitfighter called [[Strong Belwas]], was to be her bodyguard. The one who had saved her life was Belwas's squire, an older Westerosi man called Arstan Whitebeard. Along with the two men, Illyrio had sent three merchant ships to transport Dany and her people to Pentos. Instead of returning to Pentos, however, Daenerys claimed the three ships and their cargo for her own, and continued to the east.

===Slaver's Bay===
Daenerys next traveled to [[Slaver's Bay]], a region whose cities thrived on the sale and labor of slaves. In [[Astapor]], she purchased an army of elite eunuch slave soldiers called [[Unsullied]] by pretending to sell Drogon. After taking control of the Unsullied, she reclaimed Drogon, commanding him to use his fires against the Astapori leaders, and used the Unsullied to conquer the city. After forming a council to rule Astapor, she set out for the city of Yunkai.

[[Yunkai]] had hired two sellsword companies, the Storm Crows and the [[Second Sons]], in addition to conscripting a force of some four thousand slave soldiers. Daenerys parleyed with the captains of the companies, hoping to convince them to switch sides. Her arguments convinced one of the Storm Crows' commanders to assassinate his colleagues and pledge the company for Daenerys. To the Second Sons, Daenerys offered a great store of wine as tribute, then attacked them in the night while they were drunk and sleeping. With the Storm Crows' betrayal and the Second Sons' drunkenness, Yunkai's slave army was unable to withstand Daenerys's Unsullied. The entire Yunkish army was slain, captured, or put to flight and Yunkai surrendered a few days later.

Near [[Meereen]], Daenerys was nearly killed by the Titan's Bastard, the former captain of the Second Sons. Arstan Whitebeard slew the Bastard, and finally revealed his true identity as [[Barristan Selmy]], a famous knight of her father's [[Kingsguard]] who had served the Usurper [[Robert Baratheon]] after the end of the Rebellion. He claimed to have seen the error of his ways and had sought her out as the true heir to the Seven Kingdoms. Selmy also revealed that Jorah Mormont, still Daenerys's trusted right arm, had been sending reports on her actions to the [[spymaster]] in King's Landing, hoping for a pardon from King Robert. Daenerys felt betrayed by each of them, though both fervently wished to atone for their actions. During her siege of [[Meereen]], she sent them on a covert suicide mission through the sewers, half hoping that they would die in the attempt. The mission succeeded and won the city with minimal blood. Barristan humbly submitted to his Queen's judgment and was forgiven. Jorah stubbornly continued to insist that he had done nothing wrong, and Daenerys was forced to banish him from her service - despite her desire to pardon him.

Having captured Meereen, Dany turned her eyes toward Westeros, but through talks with Barristan about her homeland and its history, she learned that there was much she did not know about ruling. The '''Iron Throne''' is the throne of the [[Seven Kingdoms]], upon which the king rules. It is often used as a [[w:metonymy|metonymic]] device to refer to the king's authority. Individuals who act on the king's behalf, such as his [[Hand of the King|Hand]] or regent, may sit on the throne in his absence. The chair itself is cold and hard, with many jagged edges.

==Construction==
[[Aegon I]] had the throne constructed at the beginning of his reign. It is forged from the swords surrendered by his enemies. It took 59 days and the fires of [[Balerion]] the Black Dread to hammer 1,000 swords into the shape of a throne. The blades are still sharp, and those who sit the throne will cut themselves if they are not careful. This was Aegon's desired effect, as he believed that no king should sit comfortably on the throne. It is said that the throne itself has caused the deaths of several people.

Once Aegon had conquered six of the seven kingdoms, he proclaimed himself king of Westeros, the rule of the Iron Throne extended over the continent. He was aknowledged by the previous kings of the North, and the Rock, and had the support of the rulers he had appointed on [[the Stormlands]], [[the Riverlands]] and [[the Reach]]. It is not known how [[the Vale]] came under Aegon's rule, but anyway the Arryns also submited to the rule of the Targaryens.

The first years of Targaryen reign were a period of uneasiness and turmoil. After Aegon's death thirty-seven years after landing on Westeros, he was suceeded by [[Aenys I]], a king that has been suceeded as a weakling. After him, came [[Maegor the Cruel]], who tried to supress all oposition to the Targaryen rule taking harhs measures agains his oponents. Eventually he was murdered, and the crown was inherited by [[Jaehaerys I|Jaehaerys the Conciliator]], who did some concessions and reached lasting agreements with the contending factions. With his reign, that lasted more than half century, the Seven Kingdoms got cohesionated and the rule of the Iron Throne was consolidated.

The next king, Viserys I, reigned during a time of peace and plenty. But war came upon Westeros after his death when his younger son Aegon disputed the rights of his elder daughter and designated heiress [[Rhaenyra Targaryen|Rhaenyra]]. Many lords and nobles supported Aegon on the grounds that the [[Andals|Andal]] laws of succesion (favoring males over woman) should be followed. The conflict leaded to a civil war that would be known as [[the Dance with Dragons]].

The civil war ended with Rhaenyra's defeat and execution, but the rule of Aegon II was short. After his death, Rhaenyra's son Aegon III took the throne taking the daughter of Aegon II as a wife. Although the conflict had been resolved and the continuity of the Targaryen line was again assured, the war caused great damage to their power: many dragons had died during the fraticidal fightings, thus privating them of their most valuable resource.

When the next King Daeron ascended to the Thorne announced his intention to complete the work of Aegon the Conqueror and invade Dorne. His campaign could manage to invade Dorne, but the rebellious Dornish made holding it a costly adventure. Daeron himself died while trying to regain control of the place. After him, his brother [[Baelor I|Baelor]] proved a peaceful king.

Viserys II came next, but his reign only lasted a year. His son Aegon would end being remembered as [[Aegon the Unworthy]], in part because after legitimasing his bastards on his deathbed planted the seeds of the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].

==The Throne Room==
Since the construction of the [[Red Keep]], the Iron Throne is located on a high platform in the Throne Room. Usually, the members of the [[Kingsguard]] stand guard below.

During Targaryen, rule the Throne Room was decorated with the skulls of their [[dragon]]s. When the Baratheon line overthrew them, the dragon skulls were substituted with tapestries.

It was in the Throne Room where kings [[Maegor I|Maegor]] and [[Aerys II]] were murdered. Also, the execution of [[Rickard Stark|Rickard]] and [[Brandon Stark]] took place there.
