He wears Yellow silk tokars with gold fringe. He is obsessed with grotesques and often purchases slaves with physical deformities to add to his "collection". While overweight he is still shrewd and intelligent, a trait some of the other [[Wise Masters]] don't share.

According to [[Sweets]], Yezzan contracted some disease ten years ago while in [[Sothoryos]] and has been dying ever since. If anyone makes him forget this even for a little while they are well rewarded by him {{Ref|aDwD|47}}.

Tyrion Lannister and several of the other slaves, thought him ''"not that bad"'' compared to some of the other slavers. He treated his slaves well as long as they obeyed and caused no trouble and his slaves were usually well fed and looked after.

The '''Tattered Prince''' is the first and only commander of the [[Windblown]]. He is well past sixty. He is also known as ''Rags'' or ''Rags and Tatters'' to his men. He says ''and now we ride'' to his men in a classic [[High Valyrian]].{{Ref|aDwD|25}}

He is considered to be sad-eyed and soft spoken. He has large pouches under his eyes. The Tattered Prince rides a huge grey war[[horse]]. The stallion’s spotted hindquarters are covered with ragged strips of cloth torn from the surcoats of men his master has slain. He sits straight and tall in the high saddle and his voice is strong enough to carry to every corner of the field.

He established the mercenary company some thirty years before the events in the books. When the Tattered Prince was twenty-three the magisters of [[Pentos]] had chosen him to be their new Prince almost right after they have beheaded the previous one. Instead of accepting their offer he fled to the [[Disputed Lands]] and never returned to [[Pentos]]. He had ridden with the [[Second Sons]], the [[Iron Shields]], and the [[Maiden's Men]], but later with five other men he established the [[Windblown]]. Out of the six founders of the company, he is the only one alive.{{Ref|aDwD|25}}. The Tattered Prince and [[Bloodbeard]] despise each other.

On their way to Yunkai he commands a group of Westerosi born from his company to pretend that they have betrayed him and join Daenerys' forces. With this plan he hopes that even if the Yunkai lose the war, he will still be on the winning side. Among the Westerosi he sends to [[Meereen]] are [[Quentyn Martell|Prince Quentyn]] and his companions, although the Tattered Prince is not aware of their identities or goals.{{Ref|aDwD|25}}

However, when the Prince of Dorne decides to take Dany's dragons, he turns again toward the [[Westeros]]i Windblown. The mercenaries take his gold and promise to help him, but not before reporting his plan to the Tattered Prince. She notes that he had a prodigious appetite for [[wine]] and women, he bellows, belches, farts like a thunderclap, and pinches every serving girl who comes within his reach. He claims to have a drop of [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] blood, which must be why [[Dragon|dragons]], particularly [[Viserion]], have an affinity for him.{{Ref|aSoS|57}} He states an old member of [[House Plumm]] married a "dragon princess". He vaguely says that the wedding took place in the reign of [[Aegon Targaryen (disambiguation)|Aegon Targaryen]]. [[Daenerys Targaryen|Daenerys]] points out that there were five Aegons who reigned in Westeros and asks which one, but Ben fails to remember the regnal number requested. {{Ref|aSoS|57}}

Ben's grandmother was half-Ibbenese and half-Qohoriq. He claims that his knowledge of Westeros came from her second-hand narratives to him as a child. She never stepped foot on Westeros herself. While plundering after his first battle with the Second Sons, Plumm took some leather armor from a dead sellsword, and discovered a fortune of coins the man had sewn into the lining of the armor. Plumm, being naive at the time, told a fellow sellsword whom he believed a friend. The fellow sellsword told the commander and they took the fortune away from Plumm. Ben loves gold, but this incident made him realize that it is useless if one is not alive to enjoy it. Plumm now chooses his battles very carefully. He once served near [[Volantis]] where he learned the game of [[cyvasse]].

Brown Ben claims to have fought in a hundred battles but he does not claim to have fought bravely in all of them.

Nevertheless, she has not forgotten what it was like to be a victimized child, and her experiences have left her with a compassion that is unusual in a would-be conqueror. Daenerys is the only daughter and youngest child of King [[Aerys II Targaryen]] and his sister-wife, Queen [[Rhaella Targaryen|Rhaella]]. Daenerys was conceived during the last month of [[Robert's Rebellion|the rebellion]] that would ultimately end her family's reign over the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. In return, Drogo is to provide Viserys with ten thousand warriors for his campaign to retake the [[Iron Throne]]. Dany's opinion is not consulted, and she realizes this marriage is little different from being sold into [[slavery]]. She tells her brother she does not wish to marry Khal Drogo, but Viserys only threatens that she will “wake the dragon” if she fails to please the ''khal''. Drogo is injured in the raid. A Lhazareen priestess, [[Mirri Maz Duur]], offers to treat him, and although Drogo's [[Bloodrider|bloodriders]] reviled the woman as a ''[[maegi]]'', Dany feels that she could trust her, as Mirri was one of the women she had rescued.<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 61|Chapter 61]], Daenerys</ref> However, Drogo does not follow the priestess' advice, and the wound festers, making him too weak to ride. Jorah explained to Dany that her position as ''khaleesi'' is entirely dependent on Drogo, and without him, both she and her unborn son are likely to be killed. Desperate, she begs Mirri Maz Duur to save her husband, ignoring the possible consequences of [[Magic|blood magic]]. Daenerys names the three dragons [[Viserion]], [[Rhaegal]] and [[Drogon]], after her two deceased brothers and her late husband, respectively.

She and the remains of Drogo's ''khalasar'' are stranded in a desolate area known as the [[Red Waste]]. They dare not turn toward the [[Dothraki Sea]], the cities of [[Slaver's Bay]], or even [[Lhazar]], for the group would have made easy prey for any Dothraki ''khalasar'' they encountered. Dany chooses instead to follow a red comet that had appeared in the sky following the hatching of her dragons; although the Dothraki view the comet as a foreboding omen, Dany believes that it heralds her own rise to power. The comet leads them to an ancient, abandoned city, which Dany names [[Vaes Tolorro]]. There they recover from the ravages of the desert while Dany sends scouts in all directions.

One scout returns with three emissaries, all prominent citizens from the great city of [[Qarth]]: the merchant [[Xaro Xhoan Daxos]], the warlock [[Pyat Pree]], and the mysterious masked Asshai'i [[Quaithe]]. Dany and her people accompany the Qartheen back to their city, where they stay as honored guests in the palatial home of Xaro. There Dany learns of King [[Robert Baratheon]]'s death and the civil war in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. Several days into the trip, Ser [[Jorah]] manages to convince Daenerys to go to [[Astapor]], one of the great [[slave]] cities of [[Slaver's Bay]], to purchase [[Unsullied]] so she can return to [[Illyrio]] with an army at her back. He also kisses her and professes his love for her.{{Ref|aSoS|8}} Lonely since Drogo's death, Daenerys briefly takes her maid [[Irri]] as a lover.{{Ref|aSoS|23}} Once in [[Astapor]], Daenerys begins to have doubts about using [[slave]]s, still she agrees to purchases an army of every [[Unsullied]] in the ciry in exchange for her Dragon [[Drogon]]. She is given a slave [[Missandei]] as a gift from the [[Good Masters]]. Dany accepts, but she then frees [[Missandei]]. Dany tells Missandei that she can leave Dany's service whenever she wishes, but Missandei remains close and loyal to Dany.

After taking control of the [[Unsullied]], Dany betrays the Masters by breaking the deal, reclaims [[Drogon]] and commands him to use his fires against the [[Astapor]]i leaders. She then uses the Unsullied to [[Sack of Astapor|conquer the city]]. After the fighting, she proclaims all Astapori slaves free, including her Unsullied, giving her the name ''Breaker of Shackles'', or ''Breaker of Chains''. The [[Unsullied]] and many new [[Freedmen]] choose to follow her in her future battles. After forming a council to rule Astapor, she sets out for the next great slave city [[Yunkai]].{{Ref|aSoS|27}}

[[Yunkai]] hires two sellsword companies, the [[Stormcrows]] and the [[Second Sons]], in addition to conscripting a force of some four thousand slave soldiers. Daenerys parleys with the captains of the companies, hoping to convince them to switch sides. Her arguments convince one of the Stormcrows' commanders, [[Daario Naharis]], to assassinate his colleagues and pledge the company to Daenerys. To the Second Sons, Daenerys offers a great store of wine as tribute then [[Battle of Yunkai|attacks]] them in the night while they are drunk and sleeping. With the Stormcrows' betrayal and the Second Sons' drunkenness, Yunkai's [[slave]] army is unable to withstand Daenerys's Unsullied. The entire Yunkish army is slain, captured, or put to flight, and Yunkai surrenders a few days later.{{Ref|aSoS|42}}

Daenerys next made for [[Meereen]], the last of the great slave cities. Near Meereen, Daenerys is nearly killed by the [[Mero|Titan's Bastard]], the former captain of the Second Sons. [[Barristan Selmy|Arstan Whitebeard]] slays the Bastard, and finally reveals his true identity as [[Barristan Selmy]], a famous knight of her father's [[Kingsguard]] who had served the Usurper [[Robert Baratheon]] after the end of the Rebellion. He claims to have seen the error of his ways and to seeking her out as the true heir to the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. Selmy also reveals that [[Jorah Mormont]], still Daenerys's trusted right arm, has been sending reports on her actions to the spymaster in [[King's Landing]], [[Varys|Lord Varys]], hoping for a pardon from [[Robert Baratheon|King Robert]]. Daenerys feels betrayed by each of them, though both fervently wish to atone for their actions.{{Ref|aSoS|57}} During her [[Siege of Meereen]], she sends them on a covert suicide mission through the sewers, half hoping that they will die in the attempt. The mission succeeds and wins the city with minimal blood. Barristan humbly submits to his Queen's judgment and is forgiven. [[Jorah]] stubbornly continues to insist that he had done nothing wrong, and Daenerys is forced to banish him from her service, despite her desire to pardon him.

Having captured [[Meereen]], Dany turns her eyes toward [[Westeros]]. Through talks with Barristan about her homeland and its history, however, she learns that there is much she does not know about ruling. Dany struggles as ruler of [[Meereen]], mainly due to the constant threats surrounding her. A portion of [[Meereen]]'s former slaving families who call themselves the [[Sons of the Harpy]] fight a shadow war with her followers, attacking lone freedmen or [[Unsullied]] in the black of night and drawing a harpy nearby with the man's blood.{{Ref|aDwD|2}} The sons have also scrawled graffiti on the walls of Meereen in blood promising a death to the families of any who serve the Dragon Queen.

In Meereen, men traditionally wear their oiled black and red hair in varying shapes in homage to [[Ghis|Ghiscari]] culture. The Meereenese who now serve Dany shave their heads, symbolizing the abandonment of old Meereen to serve the new. These men are known as [[Shavepates]], and are led by [[Skahaz mo Kandaq]], known as ''the Shavepate''. Another of her Meereenese councilors is the seneschal, [[Reznak mo Reznak]].

Three fighting companies were also formed by Daenerys, their members comprised from her freeman. The company names are [[Mother's Men]]; The Company of the [[Free Brothers]]; and the [[Stalwart Shields]]. They have been receiving their training in arms from [[Grey Worm]].

Daenery's dragons have grown wilder, hunting sheep and livestock. Eventually a petitioner comes to her, presenting the bones of his six-year-old girl daughter "[[Hazzea]]", claiming the "[[Drogon|winged shadow]]" had killed her.{{Ref|aDwD|2}} Prompted by this, Dany has her [[Unsullied]] capture the dragons using nets and chains and lock them below ground to prevent any more such killings. In a [[dragon pit (Great Pyramid)|closed fighting pit]], [[Viserion]] and [[Rhaegal]] are captured (though several Unsullied lose their lives in the process), but [[Drogon]] escapes and disappears. During this time, she has a vision of [[Quaithe]] that offers her prophetic advice, most specifically warning her not to trust the perfumed seneschal.{{Ref|aDwD|11}}

Daenerys has grave enemies outside [[Meereen]] as well as in. Since she ended the [[slave]] trade in [[Slaver's Bay]], several of the [[Free Cities]] that rely upon the slave trade of the slave cities to fuel their economy have promised help to the [[Yunkai]] to bring her down. Yunkai has hired sellsword legions such as the [[Long Lances]], the [[Company of the Cat]] and the [[Windblown]]. Legions have also arrived from [[New Ghis]].

The Yunkai host first takes [[Astapor]] from [[Cleon|Cleon the Butcher King]], its most recent ruler, and puts thousands of its inhabitants to the sword or sends them again into slavery.{{Ref|aDwD|25}} An escaped rider who managed to flee in the confusion of the siege brings word of this to Dany in Meereen. Unfortunately word is not the only thing he brings, as he is infected with the [[bloody flux]].{{Ref|aDwD|30}} Several other [[Astapor]]i citizens flee to Meereen, bringing the disease with them.

The merchant emissary [[Xaro Xhoan Daxos]] arrives from [[Qarth]] bearing a gift of 13 ships in exchange for Dany's abandon of [[Slaver's Bay]] and departure for [[Westeros]]. Dany wishes to go, but the thirteen ships are not enough to take her entire army of Unsullied, [[Dothraki]], sellswords and freedmen. The Shavepates beg her not to go. If she does, they who served her and their families will die by the Sons of the Harpy. She refuses Xaro, which prompts [[Qarth]] to join the Yunkai against her.{{Ref|aDwD|16}}

Deaths of freedmen and Unsullied continue to grow nightly, and several former freed slave women are raped by the Sons of the Harpy before having their throats slit open. Daenerys takes the children of several Meereenese families of dubious loyalty as [[Cupbearers of Daenerys Targaryen|Cupbearers]] in name, but hostages in truth in hopes that would stop the killing. The killings only continue though and Daenerys refuses to harm the child hostages.

In despair and loneliness, Dany takes [[Daario Naharis]] as a lover. A plan is put to her by the [[Graces|Meereenese priestess]], the [[Green Grace]] [[Galazza Galare]], suggesting that Dany should wed the Meereenese noble [[Hizdahr zo Loraq]] to bring peace. After a time Dany agrees, on the condition that [[Hizdahr]] can promise her 90 days of peace. Hizdahr agrees.{{Ref|aDwD|23}} [[Ben Plumm|Brown Ben Plumm]], captain of the [[Second Sons]], learns that Dany can no longer control her dragons, and takes his company over to the Yunkai.

At this point, [[Quentyn Martell]] of [[Dorne]] arrives to make a marriage claim, but is rejected because Dany has already promised to wed Hizdahr. After [[Hizdahr zo Loraq]] succeeds at keeping his promise of peace, Dany weds him.{{Ref|aDwD|43}} Under his direction, Dany, much to her disgust, suggests peace terms with [[Yunkai]]. She promises if they leave [[Meereen]] and do not enslave any of the former slaves she freed, she will not disrupt the slave trade of [[Slaver's Bay]] any further. The Yunkai agree.{{Ref|aDwD|50}}

To mark the occasion, the [[fighting pits]] are reopened and several gladiators (who freely agreed to compete) battle in the arena of [[Daznak's Pit]]. During the event [[Strong Belwas]] consumes [[poisoned locusts]] that were most likely meant for Daenerys and her black dragon [[Drogon]] appears, drawn to the screams of the crowd and the smell of death. He kills a boar in the arena, but is then attacked by the animal handler [[Harghaz]]. Dany, seeing her "child" in pain, runs out in the arena to him as she sees other pit fighters going to kill the dragon. Later, when Jorah is first enslaved, he is branded with a demon’s mask on his right cheek to mark him for a dangerous and disobedient slave. The mark will never leave him. Jorah fought in the [[Greyjoy Rebellion]], during which he distinguished himself by showing exemplary courage on the battlefield, being one of the first men through the breach during the siege of [[Pyke]]. He received a [[Knight|knighthood]] in recognition of his bravery.

What gods Jorah worships has never been mentioned, but he may worship [[the Seven]], in order to become a knight he had to stand vigil in a [[sept]], and be anointed with the seven oils to consecrate his vows.

In contrast to his successful military career, Jorah has been unlucky in love. His first marriage was plagued by infertility. Jorah's wife, a member of [[House Glover]], was unable to carry a child to term throughout their ten years of marriage, and she died after her third miscarriage.

During the [[Tourney at Lannisport]] celebrating the victory over the [[House Greyjoy|Greyjoy]] rebels, he met the woman who would be his second wife: [[Lynesse Hightower]]. He was immediately smitten with her beauty, asking and receiving her permission to wear her favor in the tournament. Jorah fought remarkably well, winning an improbable victory over all challengers to name Lynesse his [[Queen of Love and Beauty]]. That very night he asked Lynesse's father [[Leyton Hightower|Lord Leyton]] for her hand in marriage, and Leyton agreed.

Although both had married for love, the marriage did not remain happy for long. Having spent her life up to that point as part of [[House Hightower|a wealthy family]] in the mild, prosperous and densely populated [[The Reach|Reach]], Lynesse was unprepared for life on the harsh and isolated [[Bear Island]] and quickly grew miserable. Jorah attempted to reproduce the lifestyle his wife was accustomed to by lavishing her with expensive gifts, but only succeeded in driving himself into financial ruin.

Desperate to pay off his debts, he resorted to breaking one of the [[Seven Kingdoms]]' oldest taboos: participating in [[Slavery|the slave trade]]. When House Mormont's overlord [[Eddard Stark]] learned that Ser Jorah had sold poachers to a [[Tyrosh|Tyroshi]] slaver, he condemned Jorah to the traditional penalty: death. At the wedding of [[Daenerys Targaryen]] to [[Drogo|Khal Drogo]] in [[Pentos]], [[Viserys Targaryen]] takes Ser Jorah into his service. Hoping to earn a royal pardon, Jorah secretly reports all the Targaryens' movements to [[Varys]]. After the wedding, he travels east with the ''[[khalasar]]'' through the [[Dothraki sea]] and into [[Vaes Dothrak]]. He holds Viserys in contempt, saying that [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]] was the last true dragon, while Viserys is "less than the shadow of a snake."{{ref|agot|23}} However, he increasingly comes to admire Daenerys for her courage and integrity. She doesn't speak of her realization nevertheless, she increasingly begins to worry that Jorah sees her primarily as either the child she once was or as a potential romantic partner, rather than truly respecting her as a queen.

Falling more and more in love with Daenerys, Jorah eventually stops sending reports,<ref>[[A Storm of Swords]], [[A Storm of Swords-Chapter 71|Chapter 71]], Daenerys</ref> sending the final one from [[Qarth]]. There he attempts to dissuade Dany from placing too much trust in the Qartheen, particularly [[Xaro Xhoan Daxos]] and the [[warlocks]] of the [[House of the Undying]]. When Dany declares her intention to enter the House of the Undying against his advice, Jorah begs her to allow him to accompany her, as do her bloodriders, but Daenerys refuses them and enteres alone.

Afterward, Dany discusses the visions she has in the House of the Undying with Jorah. He accompanies her to the city docks, seeking a ship that will take them to [[Westeros]]. Jorah suggests they sail for [[Slaver's Bay]] to buy [[Unsullied]]. He commands her army to victory against [[Yunkai]].

When "Arstan Whitebeard" is revealed to be [[Barristan Selmy]], he reveals Jorah's former status as an informer to Daenerys. Ser Jorah pleads that he stopped sending reports long ago when he fell in love with her, and Daenerys decides to send them both on a dangerous mission into the sewers of [[Meereen]] as punishment and a chance at redemption. The mission succeeds, and upon their return to court, Ser Barristan begs Daenerys' forgiveness and she gladly gives it. Jorah, however, insists that she ''owes'' him forgiveness on account of his love and history of faithful service. Although Dany wishes to forgive him, she knows that as long as he maintains this attitude she cannot do so without undermining her own authority. She banishes Jorah from her service, swearing to kill him if she ever sees him again. Crushed by her rejection, Jorah leaves.

While in a dingy brothel in [[Selhorys]], the banished Ser Jorah hires a beautiful whore with silver hair. He spots the dwarf [[Tyrion Lannister]] in the same brothel and takes him prisoner.{{Ref|aDwD|22}} Ser Jorah plans to bring Tyrion to [[Daenerys]] to regain her favor and forgiveness.

Once in [[Volantis]] with his captive, at the [[Merchant's House]], he arranges passage to [[Meereen]] with the help of the [[widow of the waterfront]]. The widow questions Jorah's motives, asking why would he seek [[Daenerys Targaryen]], whom half the world wants dead? Ser Jorah replies,

Shortly thereafter, a female dwarf performer named [[Penny]], blaming Tyrion for her brother [[Oppo]]’s death, tries to kill him.{{Ref|aDwD|27}} Tyrion takes pity on Penny and she ends up joining Jorah and Tyrion as they travel aboard the [[Selaesori Qhoran]] to [[Meereen]] and Daenerys. Ser Jorah makes it clear to Tyrion that Penny will be Tyrion's responsibility.

During the voyage Tyrion quickly gets the measure of Ser Jorah, realising that he is hopelessly in love with [[Daenerys Targaryen]] and desperate to get back into her good graces. Jorah and Tyrion share a dank, dark, foul smelling cabin. Tyrion thinks to himself,

After a storm Tyrion finds a drunken Jorah Mormont in a pool of vomit in their cabin. Ser Jorah spends most of his waking hours pacing the forecastle or leaning on the rail, gazing out to sea. Tyrion thinks he is,

The [[Selaesori Qhoran]] becomes becalmed in the [[Gulf of Grief]]. Tyrion and Penny joust to entertain the bad tempered crew. Jorah helps Tyrion out of his wooden amour and they start to argue about how Tyrion intends to keep his head when he meets Dany. He makes Jorah discomforted by asking him,

Sometime thereafter the [[Selaesori Qhoran]] becomes badly damaged by a severe storm. According to Ser Jorah he slept through the storm, Tyrion has his doubts about that, but he keeps them to himself. Thinking, ''One day he might want to bite someone on the leg, and for that you needed teeth.''

After days of drifting the passages and crew are captured by [[Yunkai]] slavers aboard a slave ship. Upon being captured and enslaved by the [[Yunkai]], Jorah made the mistake of resisting the slavers, meeting them with longsword in hand and slaying three before being overwhelmed. For that they chained him to an oar, starved him and beat him to within an inch of his life. They also burned a demon’s mask on his right cheek to mark him as a dangerous and disobedient slave. {{Ref|aDwD|47}}

The trio ends up on the auction block outside of [[Meereen]]. Brown [[Ben Plumm]] attempts to buy Ser Jorah so he can present his head as a "wedding gift" to Daenerys but is outbid, as is [[Zahrina]], a Yunkai slaver who purchases slaves to die in the [[fighting pits]]. Ben also tries to buy Tyrion and Penny but is again outbid.

They end up being purchased by [[Yezzan zo Qaggaz]]. [[Tyrion]] manages to get the slave overseer [[Nurse]] to convince [[Yezzan zo Qaggaz]] to purchase Ser Jorah by lying and telling Nurse that Jorah is part of their show – [[The Bear and the Maiden Fair]]. Jorah is the bear, [[Penny]] is the maiden, and Tyrion is the brave knight who rescues her.

On their way to their new master’s tent Tyrion observes that all the fight went out of Ser Jorah when he heard the news that his queen had wed. Jorah is completely devastated. Tyrion thinks,

During their bondage [[Nurse]] has Jorah confined in an iron cage. [[Tyrion]] notes that the knight had not adapted well to bondage. {{Ref|aDwD|57}} Nurse is displeased and has him beaten every evening as the sun sinks on [[Slaver's Bay]]. The knight absorbs the beating silently. Tyrion concludes that,

Again he wonders if it would have been a kinder fate for Jorah to have been bought by [[Zahrina]].

As [[Yezzan zo Qaggaz]] lies dying of the [[pale mare]], Tyrion seizes the chance to escape under the guise of going to a well for water. He and Penny take Ser Jorah with them to help carry more buckets. After getting the water they start back. Tyrion heads back in the wrong direction and they stop to rest. He then turns to Ser Jorah and asks him ''“Tell me, is there any fight left in you?”'' Jorah raises two black eyes and answers,

When Jorah realizes they are heading to the camp of the [[Second Sons]] which is under the command of Brown [[Ben Plumm]] he smiles a queer smile, and tells Tyrion that he doesn’t known [[Brown Ben Plumm]]. Tyrion answers that he does known him; he has played five games of [[cyvasse]] with him.

During the meeting with Ben [[Kasporio]] points out that they need fighters. Tyrion tells him he brought one, and points to Ser Jorah. It isn’t until Jorah speaks that the sellswords recognize him. When [[Kasporio]] mentions that the queen sent him away Jorah replies,

Tyrion thinks,

But he keeps that thought to himself.

Tyrion arranges for himself and Jorah to join the sellsword company. Penny becomes attached to the [[Second Sons]] through Tyrion. Along with Tyrion, Jorah signs the Second Sons leather-bound book.

He claims to have a drop of [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] blood, which must be why [[Dragon|dragons]], particularly [[Viserion]], have an affinity for him.{{Ref|aSoS|57}} He states an old member of [[House Plumm]] married a "dragon princess". He vaguely says that the wedding took place in the reign of [[Aegon Targaryen (disambiguation)|Aegon Targaryen]]. Ben loves gold, but this incident made him realize that it is useless if one is not alive to enjoy it. Plumm now chooses his battles very carefully. Snatch immediately recognizes them as the dwarfs that Ben tried to buy on the auction block. He notices the big man with them (but fails to recognize that it is Ser [[Jorah]]). After Tyrion joins the Second Sons, he and Penny meet Snatch by the cook tent. He asks them if they’ve ever killed a man. Tyrion volunteers that he has, he swats them down like flies. Inkpots then tells Tyrion he'll have [[Snatch]] take them to the wagons. Snatch then wistles for Kem, calls him a "fucking pisspot", and tells ''him'' to escort them to the wagons. Tyrion chats briefly with Kem on their way to the armory. He thinks every word out of Kem's mouth reeks of [[Flea Bottom]]. Tyrion asks him if he missed [[King's Landing]]. Kem replies “some”. He adds that he misses "this boy", a friend of his - but he doesn’t say who the boy is.

Kem mentions he misses the food, and his love for the [[bowl of brown]] in a certain pot shop in [[King's Landing]], saying that no one ever made a bowl o' brown like them, so thick you could stand your spoon up in the bowl, with chucks of this and that. He asks Tyrion if he has ever had a bowl of brown. Tyrion replies ''"A time or two. [[Symon Silver Tongue|Singers stew]], I call it."''

When Kem asks why its called that, Tyrion says ''"It tastes so good it makes me want to sing"''. Kem likes that and says he will ask for it the next time he gets back to [[Flea Bottom]].

A tradition of the company is to sign in red ink. There was a time when each new man wrote his name in his own blood, but that tradition faded as blood makes poor ink. At present, with the addition of [[Tyrion Lannister]] and [[Jorah Mormont]], they number 514 members.

The Second Sons' armorer is [[Hammer]]; his apprentice is [[Nail]]. The Second Sons keep their company armour in six big wayns drawn up near the center of their camp. Under roofs of bent wood and stiffened leather, the wagon beds are heaped high with old weaponry and armour. Most of the iron is not very good; it is not just old and ill-fitting but dented, cracked and brittle with dried blood or rust. According to Ser [[Jorah Mormont]] there is some sound steel in there, none of it is pretty, but it will stop a sword.{{Ref|aDwD|66}}. Some of the armor in the wayns are what sellswords were wearing when they died and some of it is made to fit boys.

Jorah clads himself from head to heel in company steel. His greaves are mismatched, his gorget is spotted with rust, his vambraces rich and ornate, inlaid with niello flowers. On his right hand is a gauntlet of lobstered steel, on his left a fingerless mitt of rusted mail. The nipples on his muscled breastplate have a pair of iron rings through them. Upon entering one of the wayns Tyrion and [[Penny]] find a rusted iron half-helm and then a greathelm, a crossbow, a morningstar, a warhammer, a studded mace, and half a dozen longswords. Tyrion finds a dirk he likes, a nasty piece of steel with a triangular blade with a bit of rust on it. He finds a wood and leather sheath that fits and slips the dirk inside. He remarks that the longsword Penny picks up is notched, denoting that it is cheap steel. He examines a heavy shirt of iron mail so full of holes it almost looks moth eaten. He had three children by his first wife, who was a member of [[House Arryn]]. Two were sons who died in infancy and one was a daughter, Princess [[Rhaenyra Targaryen|Rhaenyra]], who lived until adulthood.<ref>Good Queen Alysanne and Rhaenyra. ==Synopsis==
[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] is waiting in [[Varys]]’s room when the eunuch walks in. The Spider reveals that [[Tywin Lannister]] means to restore [[Pycelle]] as [[Grand Maester]], since the archmaesters of the [[Citadel]] claim that “only the conclave can unmake a Grand Maester”. When the conclave meant to send Maester [[Gormon Tyrell|Gormon]], Lord Tywin acted at once, not wishing another [[House Tyrell|Tyrell]] on the [[Small Council]].

Tyrion is surprised to learn that Varys has whisperers even in the Citadel, where the conclave always met in secrecy. He finds out that [[Boros Blount]] has been restored to the [[Kingsguard]], and that [[Mandon Moore]] had been brought to [[King's Landing]] by [[Jon Arryn]]. Tyrion asks Varys to bring [[Shae]] to the eunuch’s chambers so that no one will notice their meeting. He realizes that he cannot trust Varys any further, but hopes to use him this one last time. When he meets Shae, he means to send her away to protect her from his father, but Tyrion once again cannot bear to part with her. He also knows he must deal with the singer [[Symon]] if he means to keep Shae in King’s Landing.

==Synopsis==

[[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]], [[Brienne of Tarth|Brienne]], and [[Cleos Frey|Cleos]] stop at the [[Inn of the Kneeling Man]] to eat. The innkeep mentions the [[Beric Dondarrion|Lightning Lord]], and we learn that Lord Beric and [[Thoros of Myr|Thoros]] are still together raiding in the [[Riverlands]]. The innkeep recommends they abandon their skiff and ride for [[King's Landing]]. Brienne buys the inn’s horses for three gold and their skiff, getting robbed blind according to Jaime. The [[husband]] of the innkeeper recommends they follow a specific path to avoid outlaws, and they ride off. Jaime is impressed that Brienne takes the opposite path, realizing they might have been set up.

That night, Jaime reminisces of how he became a [[Kingsguard]]. [[Cersei Lannister|His sister]] was brought to court by [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]], who was [[Hand of the King|Hand]] at the time. He hoped to wed her to prince [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]]. Jaime was squiring for [[Sumner Crakehall]], and was knighted by [[Arthur Dayne]] during the battle against the [[Kingswood Brotherhood]]. Cersei later told him that their father meant to wed him to [[Lysa Arryn]], and she told him that if he took the white cloak, they could be together in King’s Landing. They did it behind their father’s back, and Tywin could not object to King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys]]’s wishes. Tywin then resigned as Hand and took Cersei back to [[Casterly Rock]], unknowingly ruining their plan, for Jaime was now stuck in King’s Landing as a sworn brother of the Kingsguard.

Years later, when Aerys made the mistake of admitting Tywin’s army, the Mad King called for the former Hand’s head. Alone in the throne room, Aerys had one final plan, but Jaime arrived in his golden armor, the blood of Lord [[Rossart]] on his blade, and killed the King. Jaime had hoped to slip out unnoticed, but his father’s men entered the throne room, and they thought Jaime meant to give the throne to his father, but Jaime told them he didn’t care who was proclaimed king. He was waiting on the iron throne to see who would come to claim the kingdom, but it was [[Eddard Stark]] who found him there. Eddard said nothing but he saw the blood of the king Jaime had sworn to protect on Jaime's hands. If only his father’s men hadn’t found him standing over Aerys’ body…

==Synopsis==

[[Illyrio Mopatis|Illyrio]]’s three ships are sailing for [[Pentos]], and Daenerys is watching her dragons fly over the ocean. [[Barristan Selmy|Arstan]] tells her that [[Balerion]] was 200 years old when he died during the reign of King [[Jaehaerys I Targaryen|Jaehaerys the Conciliator]]. Arstan then speaks of [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]], how he had been bookish as a child, always reading. Then one day he had read something in a scroll that made him want to be a warrior, and he began training fiercely. Arstan admits Rhaegar was a great warrior, but he had won no battles.

Later, [[Jorah Mormont|Jorah]] tells her that Arstan is more than he seems, and warns her not to trust him. The knight advises her to sail for [[Astapor]] and buy [[Unsullied]], the best trained fighting force in the world. He tells the tale of the [[Three Thousand of Qohor]], where a small army of Unsullied defeated a huge ''[[khalasar]]'' trying to pillage [[Qohor]]. The Unsullied are eunuch slaves trained to obey orders absolutely, and they feel no pain. Daenerys agrees that she will force Captain [[Groleo]] and Strong [[Belwas]] to change course. Ser Jorah then grabs her by the waist and kisses her. Dany tells him he should not have done so, but Jorah talks of her vision in the [[House of the Undying]], and how the dragon having three heads may mean that she should take two more husbands.

==Synopsis==
[[Jon Snow|Jon]] is brought before [[Mance Rayder]], since [[Rattleshirt]] doesn’t trust him. In the King’s tent, Jon mistakes [[Styr]] for Mance Rayder. But it is the gray-haired man playing the lute who is the [[King-Beyond-the-Wall]]. Rattleshirt reveals his misgivings about Jon to the king, but Mance wishes to speak with Jon alone.

Mance indicates that he has seen Jon twice before, once when he was still a [[Night's Watch|black brother]] and Jon just a boy, and again during King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]]’s visit to Winterfell. Mance had disguised himself as a singer in order to see King Robert and get the measure of [[Benjen Stark]], who was a bane to the wildlings. Testing Jon, he asks why he deserted the Night’s Watch, but Jon asks him to tell his story first. The king explains that he had been wounded in a hunt and treated by an old wildling woman. She mended his cloak with burgandy thread which was rare for wildlings to have and, hence very valuable to part with. When Mance returned to the Watch, they replace his cloak with a new black one emphasising the importance of the black uniform, not recognising the symbolism of her gift. Mance came to resent the restriction new black cloak of the Night’s Watch.

Jon, knowing now that Mance was at [[Winterfell]], asks, "And did you see where I was seated Mance? Did you see where they put the bastard?" The king then accepts Jon as member of the free folk.

==Synopsis==

[[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] is invited to dinner by [[Margaery Tyrell|Margaery]] and her grandmother, the Lady [[Olenna Redwyne|Olenna]]. She is escorted to the party by [[Loras Tyrell|Loras]], and unknowingly upsets him by talking of [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]]’s death. The party is held in the [[Red Keep#Maidenvault|Maidenvault]], where King [[Baelor I Targaryen|Baelor the Blessed]] confined his sisters so they would not tempt him, as he had sworn a vow of celibacy. She is introduced to all of Margaery’s cousins and companions, but it is the Queen of Thorns who takes the most interest in Sansa.

Lady Olenna reveals that the [[House Baratheon|Baratheons]] have [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] blood, and that the [[House Tyrell|Tyrell]] claim to [[Highgarden]]n has always been shaky since several other houses in [[the Reach]] can claim descent from [[Garth Gardener (Greenhand)|Garth Greenhand]] as well. The old woman makes it known that [[Mace Tyrell|her son]] is an oaf for making this alliance with the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]], and she wishes to learn from Sansa the truth of what [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]] is. Sansa fears that [[Varys]] is listening, but Lady Olenna commands [[Butterbumps]] to sing at the top of his voice. Sansa reveals the truth about Joffrey to the Queen of Thorns and Margaery, telling them that the King is a monster and that she fears for Margaery. Lady Olenna assures Sansa that the wedding will still go on, as Mace is determined that his daughter wed the King. The Queen of Thorns offers Sansa a proposal to visit Highgarden after the wedding, and wishes Sansa to marry her grandson [[Willas Tyrell|Willas]].

==Synopsis==
[[Davos Seaworth|Davos]] has washed up on the shore of a small island in the [[Blackwater Bay]]. He remembers swimming beneath the chain boom, and then getting caught by the current and gulping seawater. But somehow, he is alive, and believes [[Faith of the Seven|the Seven]] still have some use for him. Despairing over the loss of four of his sons in the sea battle, he contemplates dying on the island, but decides instead to live. A [[Lys|Lyseni]] ship rescues him, one of [[Salladhor Saan]]’s fleet.

==Synopsis==
[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]], recovering from his wounds, learns from [[Bronn]] (who is now Ser Bronn of the Blackwater) that Ser [[Addam Marbrand]] was named Commander of the City Watch since Lord [[Jacelyn Bywater|Jacelyn]] was killed by his own men during the [[Battle of the Blackwater]]. He finds that much has changed in [[King's Landing]] under [[Tywin Lannister|his father]]’s rule. He also realizes that his father has seen to it that Tyrion received little of the credit for saving the city. He asks Bronn to learn more about Ser [[Mandon Moore]], trying to discover if his sister sent the [[Kingsguard]] to kill him. [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] has returned [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]] to the city, and the [[House Kettleblack|Kettleblacks]], now all knights, are no longer working for Tyrion. His cousin [[Tyrek Lannister|Tyrek]] still has not been found, and is feared dead.

Tyrion forces himself to dress and visit his father, despite his near captivity in [[Red Keep#Maegor's Holdfast|Maegor's Holdfast]] by his sister. Lord Tywin reveals that some battles are won by quills and ravens, and is in the process of composing letters. The [[Hand of the King|Hand]] tells his son that Ser [[Helman Tallhart]] and [[Robett Glover]] are marching on [[Duskendale]], but he has sent Lord [[Randyll Tarly]] and Ser [[Gregor Clegane|Gregor]] to deal with them. Tyrion seeks a little gratitude from his father, but Lord Tywin tells him, "Mummers and monkeys require applause." Tyrion states that he wants [[Casterly Rock]], as he is heir by rights since [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]] is a sworn brother of the Kingsguard. Tywin will never let Tyrion have the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]]’s ancestral seat, however, and warns him that he will hang the next whore Tyrion takes to bed.

==Synopsis==

She plans to follow the [[Trident#Red Fork|Red Fork]] to [[Riverrun]], but they seem to be lost. Fearing pursuit, they ride for long hours and exhaust themselves. Arya falls asleep and dreams through the eyes of a wolf. In the dream, she and her pack ravage four members of the [[Bloody Mummers]], killing three and tearing off [[Iggo]]’s arm. Was the dream real?
