The '''War of the Five Kings''' was a large, multi-theater conflict fought in the [[Seven Kingdoms]], from 298-300 AL. As the name implies, at one time during the war five people claimed the title of king: [[Joffrey Baratheon]], [[Stannis Baratheon]] and [[Renly Baratheon]] all claimed the [[Iron Throne]], whilst the separatists [[Robb Stark]] and [[Balon Greyjoy]] claimed the title of [[King in the North]] and [[King of the Iron Islands]] respectively, attempting to secede their lands from the the rule of the Iron Throne.

The War of the Five Kings is the principal military conflict depicted in the first three novels of the [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] series, and its aftermath and successor conflicts continue in the latest two novels. According to Archmaester [[Benedict]], the name of the conflict is incorrect because Renly Baratheon was slain before Balon Greyjoy crowned himself, so there never were technically five kings at once.{{ref|aFfC|1}}

==Causes==
15 years prior to the break of the conflict, House Baratheon led a popular [[Robert's Rebellion|rebellion]], successfully overthrowing the Mad King, [[Aerys II Targaryen]]. Following the rebellion, King [[Robert Baratheon]] reigned over the Kingdoms, securing the succession with three heirs [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] and [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]], from his wife [[Cersei Lannister]].

However, the [[Hand of the King|King's Hand]], [[Jon Arryn]], and the king's brother, [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]], became suspicious over the legitimacy of Robert's three children. They investigated and eventually concluded that the children were not Robert's at all, but the product of incest between Cersei and her twin brother, [[Jaime Lannister]]. Jon continued his investigations, hoping to produce enough evidence to convince the king. However, before the right time arose to inform King Robert, Lord Arryn was fatally poisoned. Stannis, fearing for his family’s safety and believing Jon was murdered for knowing the truth, immediately returned to [[Dragonstone]] and began mustering troops.

Oblivious, King Robert appointed his friend [[Eddard Stark]] to the position of Hand. Jon's widow, [[Lysa Arryn]], sent a coded letter to her sister [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]], Eddard's wife, claiming that the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]] had her husband murdered. Catelyn convinced her husband to go south and investigate as Hand. During the king's trip to [[Winterfell]], Eddard and Catelyn's son [[Bran Stark|Bran]] had seen the queen and her brother having sex while climbing the walls of the castle. Jaime threw the child from the tower to ensure that the secret died with him, but the boy survived, lingering in a coma. Some days after the King and Hand had left for [[King's Landing]], a hired assassin came to kill the still-comatose lad, but was prevented from doing so by the boy's pet [[direwolf]]. Lady Catelyn elected to go south to inform her husband of the attack.

When she arrived in King's Landing, she was met by her old friend, [[Petyr Baelish]], who told her that the hired assassin's dagger had belonged to [[Tyrion Lannister]], another brother of the queen. This was a lie, but neither Catelyn nor Eddard suspected it. Eddard told his wife to return home. While on the return journey, she encountered Tyrion at a [[Crossroads Inn|roadside inn]], and had him arrested for the attack on Bran. She took him to her sister in the [[Eyrie]], where Tyrion faced trial for his alleged crimes. He won his freedom, but the mere fact of his arrest had inflamed tensions between Houses Stark and Lannister.

Eddard also investigated Jon Arryn's death and found out the truth about Cersei's children. Eddard revealed his knowledge to the queen, ordering her to go into exile with her children. Instead, Cersei had Robert given unusually potent wine, while he was on a hunt. While in this inebriated state, he was mauled by a boar. The dying king ordered that Eddard serve as his regent until Joffrey came of age, but Eddard sent a letter offering Stannis the throne, as Stannis was the rightful heir. Sensing a power struggle, Renly Baratheon wished to side with Lord Stark to seize the royal children and crown Renly; Ned refused to crown anyone other than Stannis, so Renly fled King’s Landing with Ser [[Loras Tyrell]] to raise his own army. Petyr Baelish betrayed Eddard, bribing [[Janos Slynt]] to have the [[Gold Cloaks]] support the Lannisters rather than Starks; Eddard was then arrested and imprisoned. Learning of Eddard's arrest, his son and heir [[Robb Stark]] called his father's armies together and marched south. Although there was only one king in the realm, the newly-crowned King Joffrey, the War of the Five Kings had begun.

==Course of the war==

The war was set as local conflict when [[Catelyn Stark]] seized [[Tyrion Lannister]] for the attempted murder of her son, [[Bran Stark|Bran]]. Lord [[Tywin Lannister]] bore no special love for Tyrion, but he would not allow such a slight to his house's honor. He made plans to invade the [[Riverlands]], striking at Catelyn's [[Hoster Tully|father]]'s [[House Tully|house]] and bannermen, massing two hosts at [[Casterly Rock]]. One consisted of 20,000 men to be commanded by himself, with the other 15,000 men to be commanded by his son [[Jaime Lannister|Ser Jaime]]. As Tywin began amassing his armies, he sent Ser [[Gregor Clegane]] ahead to raid and pillage the Riverlands countryside, creating chaos, containing the river lords to their own keeps.
At the same time Tywin hoped to lure Lord [[Eddard Stark|Stark]] himself into the Riverlands and capture him, bringing the campaign to a swift conclusion. However, his plan was unknowingly foiled by Jaime, who after discovering his brother's capture, had his men ambush Eddard in the streets of King's Landing before fleeing for Casterly Rock. The wounded Hand thus sent Lord [[Beric Dondarrion]] to stop Gregor Clegane in his stead.

Meanwhile in the Riverlands, Ser [[Edmure Tully]] found out that the Lannisters were raising a host at Casterly Rock and sent riders to the Rock, demanding that Lord Tywin proclaim his intent. The Tully banners were called to [[Riverrun]], which proved difficult with Tywin's reavers harassing the river lords, and only 4,000 men were sent under the command of Lords [[House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest|Vance]] and [[Clement Piper|Piper]] to guard the passage between the [[Westerlands]] and the Riverlands at the [[Golden Tooth]], to prevent any Lannister army from entering Tully lands.

King [[Robert Baratheon]] died after a hunting accident, naming [[Eddard Stark]] as [[Regent|Lord Regent]] until his supposed son [[Joffrey Baratheon|Prince Joffrey]] grew to manhood. However, Joffrey immediately claims the Iron Throne with the support of his mother's powerful family, the immensely wealthy House Lannister. Eddard tried to take Joffrey into custody as a false claiamant, naming [[Stannis Baratheon]] as the rightful heir to the [[Iron Throne]]. However, he is arrested instead after being politically outmaneuvered by [[Cersei Lannister]] and [[Petyr Baelish]]. Following Joffrey's coronation, [[Renly Baratheon]] flees from King's Landing, and [[Robb Stark]] calls his father bannermen at Winterfell, hastily assembling a host of 12,000 men and marching south to [[Moat Cailin]]. Tywin invade the Riverlands.

===The North Joins the War===

After assembling his force on the march, Robb Stark, arrives at [[Moat Cailin]], where he is joined by his mother, [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]] and force of 1,750 from [[White Harbor]], to total 18,000 men. Moat Cailin is a formidable defensible position that held countless southron invaders in the past, where he garrisons a small force mostly consisting of archers, to hold the ruin. Additionally, Robb sends word to [[Howland Reed]] to bleed any Lannister host that attempts to come north. However, Robb knows that Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]] is too smart to try and will stay close to the Trident taking castles one by one until Riverrun stands alone and with Riverrun under siege, he has no choice but to ride south to meet him.

However, his options are limited as he can cross the [[Trident]] either at [[the Twins]] (where the [[House Frey|Freys]] remained neutral and unlikely to side with northerners) or the Ruby Ford (which Tywin could easily reach and seal off). Robb's mother Catelyn devises a plan to gain [[Walder Frey|Lord Frey's]] support. Bolstered by the Freys and [[House Mallister|Mallisters]], Robb splits his horse and foot, sending the foot down the kingsroad to engage Tywin while the horse will cross at the Twins and race to Riverrun and surprise the besiegers.

*'''[[Battle of the Green Fork]].''' Lord Tywin’s army met its first real opposition as [[House Stark]] entered the war on behalf of [[House Tully]]. [[Roose Bolton]] marched down the Kingsroad with his force of roughly 16,000 foot men, mostly infantry. He planned a night attack, but [[Addam Marbrand]]’s outriders saw them coming and roused Tywin’s army in time to prepare for battle. Tywin’s host won victory but Lord Bolton was able to retreat with the battered remnants of the army to the Twins. With the death of King Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, the realm sees rise of multiple kings who trying to fill the void, in order of proclamation: Renly Baratheon, Robb Stark, Stannis Baratheon and Balon Greyjoy. Robert's brothers Stannis and Renly who individually lay claim on the throne, divided House Baratheon three ways, between them and King Joffrey who sits on the Throne. Rob Stark, proclaimed a free North and Balon Greyjoy proclaim independence of the Iron Islands.

Immediately upon hearing of his brother's death and having failed to win the support of the King's Hand, Eddard Stark, Renly Baratheon fled the city for Highgarden. With the support of the [[Stormlands]] and the strength of the Reach behind him. Meanwhile, Lord [[Mace Tyrell]] assembles another host at Highgarden.

He sends his brother [[Victarion Greyjoy|Victarion]] with the bulk of the fleet to take [[Moat Cailin]], a natural choke point which has protected the North from southern invasion for thousands of years, in order to cut off the Northmen from their lands. He sends his daughter and preferred heir [[Asha Greyjoy|Asha]] with a dozen ships to take [[Deepwood Motte]], and Theon to raid along the [[Stony Shore]], providing a distraction for his main strikes. With these moves, the whole western coast will be in the Ironborn hands.

While the conflicts at and north of the Wall cannot be characterized as a campaign or war by any one side it can be viewed as a three-sided conflict between forces each pursuing their own goals at the expense of the others.

Whilst the War of the Five Kings raged in Westeros and the Night's Watch battled for its survival, several other conflicts erupted on the eastern continent. Many of these wars were minor: the Dothraki mounting their usual heavy raids on the lands of the Lhazareen, another brewing war between Myr and Lys for control of the Disputed Lands and so forth. However, one was major and significantly shifted the balance of power. This war would also later directly impact on affairs in Westeros.

After the War of the Usurper, the eight-year-old [[Viserys Targaryen]] and the newborn [[Daenerys Targaryen]] took refuge in the Free Cities. When she was nearly fourteen years of age (ca. 298 AL) Daenerys was sold to the Dothraki [[Khal Drogo]] in return for the use of his forty thousand bloodriders in placing Viserys on the Iron Throne. However, Viserys proved impatient and unwisely insulted Khal Drogo, resulting in his death at Drogo's hands. Drogo eventually perished from a wound taken in battle and his ''khal'' was divided up amongst his old lieutenants. Daenerys and a small entourage of the remaining, made up largely of the old, sick or young were left to die in the red wastes, but eventually found safety in the city of Qarth on the Jade Sea. During this time three ancient eggs belonging to House Targaryen and restored to Daenerys by her ally [[Illyrio Mopatis]] hatched into dragons. After attempts on her life in Qarth, Daenerys was able to return to Pentos on ships sent to rescue her by Mopatis.

However, on the way back to Pentos, Daenerys chose to divert to Slaver's Bay to purchase a slave army from the three great [[Ghis]]cari slave cities: [[Astapor]], [[Yunkai]], and [[Meereen]].

The Iron Fleet under [[Victarion Greyjoy]] sails to [[Meereen]] to bring Daenerys and her dragons to [[Westeros]]. His fleet conduct several raids capturing dozens of ships. While the fleet is anchored near [[Volantis]] to take supplies, Victarion learns the Volantis fleet is sailing to [[Meereen]] to end the reign of [[Daenerys Targaryen]]. Victarion has the Iron Fleet sail to [[Slaver's Bay]] and it is most likely the Iron Fleet will arrive before the Volantis Fleet.

The '''War of the Five Kings''' was a large, multi-theater conflict fought in the [[Seven Kingdoms]], from 298-300 AL. As the name implies, at one time during the war five people claimed the title of king: [[Joffrey Baratheon]], [[Stannis Baratheon]] and [[Renly Baratheon]] all claimed the [[Iron Throne]], whilst the separatists [[Robb Stark]] and [[Balon Greyjoy]] claimed the title of [[King in the North]] and [[King of the Iron Islands]] respectively, attempting to secede their lands from the the rule of the Iron Throne.

The War of the Five Kings is the principal military conflict depicted in the first three novels of the [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] series, and its aftermath and successor conflicts continue in the latest two novels. According to Archmaester [[Benedict]], the name of the conflict is incorrect because Renly Baratheon was slain before Balon Greyjoy crowned himself, so there never were technically five kings at once.{{ref|aFfC|1}}

==Causes==
15 years prior to the break of the conflict, House Baratheon led a popular [[Robert's Rebellion|rebellion]], successfully overthrowing the Mad King, [[Aerys II Targaryen]]. Following the rebellion, King [[Robert Baratheon]] reigned over the Kingdoms, securing the succession with three heirs [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] and [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]], from his wife [[Cersei Lannister]].

However, the [[Hand of the King|King's Hand]], [[Jon Arryn]], and the king's brother, [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]], became suspicious over the legitimacy of Robert's three children. They investigated and eventually concluded that the children were not Robert's at all, but the product of incest between Cersei and her twin brother, [[Jaime Lannister]]. Jon continued his investigations, hoping to produce enough evidence to convince the king. However, before the right time arose to inform King Robert, Lord Arryn was fatally poisoned. Stannis, fearing for his family’s safety and believing Jon was murdered for knowing the truth, immediately returned to [[Dragonstone]] and began mustering troops.

Oblivious, King Robert appointed his friend [[Eddard Stark]] to the position of Hand. Jon's widow, [[Lysa Arryn]], sent a coded letter to her sister [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]], Eddard's wife, claiming that the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]] had her husband murdered. Catelyn convinced her husband to go south and investigate as Hand. During the king's trip to [[Winterfell]], Eddard and Catelyn's son [[Bran Stark|Bran]] had seen the queen and her brother having sex while climbing the walls of the castle. Jaime threw the child from the tower to ensure that the secret died with him, but the boy survived, lingering in a coma. Some days after the King and Hand had left for [[King's Landing]], a hired assassin came to kill the still-comatose lad, but was prevented from doing so by the boy's pet [[direwolf]]. Lady Catelyn elected to go south to inform her husband of the attack.

When she arrived in King's Landing, she was met by her old friend, [[Petyr Baelish]], who told her that the hired assassin's dagger had belonged to [[Tyrion Lannister]], another brother of the queen. This was a lie, but neither Catelyn nor Eddard suspected it. Eddard told his wife to return home. While on the return journey, she encountered Tyrion at a [[Crossroads Inn|roadside inn]], and had him arrested for the attack on Bran. She took him to her sister in the [[Eyrie]], where Tyrion faced trial for his alleged crimes. He won his freedom, but the mere fact of his arrest had inflamed tensions between Houses Stark and Lannister.

Eddard also investigated Jon Arryn's death and found out the truth about Cersei's children. Eddard revealed his knowledge to the queen, ordering her to go into exile with her children. Instead, Cersei had Robert given unusually potent wine, while he was on a hunt. While in this inebriated state, he was mauled by a boar. The dying king ordered that Eddard serve as his regent until Joffrey came of age, but Eddard sent a letter offering Stannis the throne, as Stannis was the rightful heir. Sensing a power struggle, Renly Baratheon wished to side with Lord Stark to seize the royal children and crown Renly; Ned refused to crown anyone other than Stannis, so Renly fled King’s Landing with Ser [[Loras Tyrell]] to raise his own army. Petyr Baelish betrayed Eddard, bribing [[Janos Slynt]] to have the [[Gold Cloaks]] support the Lannisters rather than Starks; Eddard was then arrested and imprisoned. Learning of Eddard's arrest, his son and heir [[Robb Stark]] called his father's armies together and marched south. Although there was only one king in the realm, the newly-crowned King Joffrey, the War of the Five Kings had begun.

The war was set as local conflict when [[Catelyn Stark]] seized [[Tyrion Lannister]] for the attempted murder of her son, [[Bran Stark|Bran]]. Lord [[Tywin Lannister]] bore no special love for Tyrion, but he would not allow such a slight to his house's honor. He made plans to invade the [[Riverlands]], striking at Catelyn's [[Hoster Tully|father]]'s [[House Tully|house]] and bannermen, massing two hosts at [[Casterly Rock]]. One consisted of 20,000 men to be commanded by himself, with the other 15,000 men to be commanded by his son [[Jaime Lannister|Ser Jaime]]. As Tywin began amassing his armies, he sent Ser [[Gregor Clegane]] ahead to raid and pillage the Riverlands countryside, creating chaos, containing the river lords to their own keeps.
At the same time Tywin hoped to lure Lord [[Eddard Stark|Stark]] himself into the Riverlands and capture him, bringing the campaign to a swift conclusion. However, his plan was unknowingly foiled by Jaime, who after discovering his brother's capture, had his men ambush Eddard in the streets of King's Landing before fleeing for Casterly Rock. The wounded Hand thus sent Lord [[Beric Dondarrion]] to stop Gregor Clegane in his stead.

Meanwhile in the Riverlands, Ser [[Edmure Tully]] found out that the Lannisters were raising a host at Casterly Rock and sent riders to the Rock, demanding that Lord Tywin proclaim his intent. The Tully banners were called to [[Riverrun]], which proved difficult with Tywin's reavers harassing the river lords, and only 4,000 men were sent under the command of Lords [[House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest|Vance]] and [[Clement Piper|Piper]] to guard the passage between the [[Westerlands]] and the Riverlands at the [[Golden Tooth]], to prevent any Lannister army from entering Tully lands.

King [[Robert Baratheon]] died after a hunting accident, naming [[Eddard Stark]] as [[Regent|Lord Regent]] until his supposed son [[Joffrey Baratheon|Prince Joffrey]] grew to manhood. However, Joffrey immediately claims the Iron Throne with the support of his mother's powerful family, the immensely wealthy House Lannister. Eddard tried to take Joffrey into custody as a false claiamant, naming [[Stannis Baratheon]] as the rightful heir to the [[Iron Throne]]. However, he is arrested instead after being politically outmaneuvered by [[Cersei Lannister]] and [[Petyr Baelish]]. Following Joffrey's coronation, [[Renly Baratheon]] flees from King's Landing, and [[Robb Stark]] calls his father bannermen at Winterfell, hastily assembling a host of 12,000 men and marching south to [[Moat Cailin]]. Moat Cailin is a formidable defensible position that held countless southron invaders in the past, where he garrisons a small force mostly consisting of archers, to hold the ruin. Additionally, Robb sends word to [[Howland Reed]] to bleed any Lannister host that attempts to come north. However, Robb knows that Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]] is too smart to try and will stay close to the Trident taking castles one by one until Riverrun stands alone and with Riverrun under siege, he has no choice but to ride south to meet him.

However, his options are limited as he can cross the [[Trident]] either at [[the Twins]] (where the [[House Frey|Freys]] remained neutral and unlikely to side with northerners) or the Ruby Ford (which Tywin could easily reach and seal off). Robb's mother Catelyn devises a plan to gain [[Walder Frey|Lord Frey's]] support. Bolstered by the Freys and [[House Mallister|Mallisters]], Robb splits his horse and foot, sending the foot down the kingsroad to engage Tywin while the horse will cross at the Twins and race to Riverrun and surprise the besiegers.

*'''[[Battle of the Green Fork]].''' Lord Tywin’s army met its first real opposition as [[House Stark]] entered the war on behalf of [[House Tully]]. While the conflicts at and north of the Wall cannot be characterized as a campaign or war by any one side it can be viewed as a three-sided conflict between forces each pursuing their own goals at the expense of the others.

Whilst the War of the Five Kings raged in Westeros and the Night's Watch battled for its survival, several other conflicts erupted on the eastern continent. Many of these wars were minor: the Dothraki mounting their usual heavy raids on the lands of the Lhazareen, another brewing war between Myr and Lys for control of the Disputed Lands and so forth. However, one was major and significantly shifted the balance of power. This war would also later directly impact on affairs in Westeros.

After the War of the Usurper, the eight-year-old [[Viserys Targaryen]] and the newborn [[Daenerys Targaryen]] took refuge in the Free Cities. When she was nearly fourteen years of age (ca. 298 AL) Daenerys was sold to the Dothraki [[Khal Drogo]] in return for the use of his forty thousand bloodriders in placing Viserys on the Iron Throne. However, Viserys proved impatient and unwisely insulted Khal Drogo, resulting in his death at Drogo's hands. Drogo eventually perished from a wound taken in battle and his ''khal'' was divided up amongst his old lieutenants. Daenerys and a small entourage of the remaining, made up largely of the old, sick or young were left to die in the red wastes, but eventually found safety in the city of Qarth on the Jade Sea. During this time three ancient eggs belonging to House Targaryen and restored to Daenerys by her ally [[Illyrio Mopatis]] hatched into dragons. After attempts on her life in Qarth, Daenerys was able to return to Pentos on ships sent to rescue her by Mopatis.

Ser [[Barristan Selmy]] learns that the Yunkai are planning to re-enslave the former slaves Daenerys freed and Hizdahr is possibly in on the plot. He seizes control and captures Hizdahr. [[Volantis]] is sailing its fleet to Meereen to aid the [[Yunkai]]. Selmy prepares for war.

===The Iron Fleet===
The Iron Fleet under [[Victarion Greyjoy]] sails to [[Meereen]] to bring Daenerys and her dragons to [[Westeros]]. His fleet conduct several raids capturing dozens of ships. While the fleet is anchored near [[Volantis]] to take supplies, Victarion learns the Volantis fleet is sailing to [[Meereen]] to end the reign of [[Daenerys Targaryen]]. Victarion has the Iron Fleet sail to [[Slaver's Bay]] and it is most likely the Iron Fleet will arrive before the Volantis Fleet.

The '''War of the Five Kings''' was a large, multi-theater conflict fought in the [[Seven Kingdoms]], from 298-300 AL. As the name implies, at one time during the war five people claimed the title of king: [[Joffrey Baratheon]], [[Stannis Baratheon]] and [[Renly Baratheon]] all claimed the [[Iron Throne]], whilst the separatists [[Robb Stark]] and [[Balon Greyjoy]] claimed the title of [[King in the North]] and [[King of the Iron Islands]] respectively, attempting to secede their lands from the the rule of the Iron Throne.

The War of the Five Kings is the principal military conflict depicted in the first three novels of the [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] series, and its aftermath and successor conflicts continue in the latest two novels. According to Archmaester [[Benedict]], the name of the conflict is incorrect because Renly Baratheon was slain before Balon Greyjoy crowned himself, so there never were technically five kings at once.{{ref|aFfC|1}}

==Causes==
15 years prior to the break of the conflict, House Baratheon led a popular [[Robert's Rebellion|rebellion]], successfully overthrowing the Mad King, [[Aerys II Targaryen]]. Following the rebellion, King [[Robert Baratheon]] reigned over the Kingdoms, securing the succession with three heirs [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] and [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]], from his wife [[Cersei Lannister]].

However, the [[Hand of the King|King's Hand]], [[Jon Arryn]], and the king's brother, [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]], became suspicious over the legitimacy of Robert's three children. They investigated and eventually concluded that the children were not Robert's at all, but the product of incest between Cersei and her twin brother, [[Jaime Lannister]]. Jon continued his investigations, hoping to produce enough evidence to convince the king. However, before the right time arose to inform King Robert, Lord Arryn was fatally poisoned. Stannis, fearing for his family’s safety and believing Jon was murdered for knowing the truth, immediately returned to [[Dragonstone]] and began mustering troops.

Oblivious, King Robert appointed his friend [[Eddard Stark]] to the position of Hand. Jon's widow, [[Lysa Arryn]], sent a coded letter to her sister [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]], Eddard's wife, claiming that the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]] had her husband murdered. Catelyn convinced her husband to go south and investigate as Hand. During the king's trip to [[Winterfell]], Eddard and Catelyn's son [[Bran Stark|Bran]] had seen the queen and her brother having sex while climbing the walls of the castle. Jaime threw the child from the tower to ensure that the secret died with him, but the boy survived, lingering in a coma. Some days after the King and Hand had left for [[King's Landing]], a hired assassin came to kill the still-comatose lad, but was prevented from doing so by the boy's pet [[direwolf]]. Lady Catelyn elected to go south to inform her husband of the attack.

When she arrived in King's Landing, she was met by her old friend, [[Petyr Baelish]], who told her that the hired assassin's dagger had belonged to [[Tyrion Lannister]], another brother of the queen. This was a lie, but neither Catelyn nor Eddard suspected it. Eddard told his wife to return home. While on the return journey, she encountered Tyrion at a [[Crossroads Inn|roadside inn]], and had him arrested for the attack on Bran. She took him to her sister in the [[Eyrie]], where Tyrion faced trial for his alleged crimes. He won his freedom, but the mere fact of his arrest had inflamed tensions between Houses Stark and Lannister.

Eddard also investigated Jon Arryn's death and found out the truth about Cersei's children. Eddard revealed his knowledge to the queen, ordering her to go into exile with her children. Instead, Cersei had Robert given unusually potent wine, while he was on a hunt. While in this inebriated state, he was mauled by a boar. The dying king ordered that Eddard serve as his regent until Joffrey came of age, but Eddard sent a letter offering Stannis the throne, as Stannis was the rightful heir. Sensing a power struggle, Renly Baratheon wished to side with Lord Stark to seize the royal children and crown Renly; Ned refused to crown anyone other than Stannis, so Renly fled King’s Landing with Ser [[Loras Tyrell]] to raise his own army. Petyr Baelish betrayed Eddard, bribing [[Janos Slynt]] to have the [[Gold Cloaks]] support the Lannisters rather than Starks; Eddard was then arrested and imprisoned. Learning of Eddard's arrest, his son and heir [[Robb Stark]] called his father's armies together and marched south. Although there was only one king in the realm, the newly-crowned King Joffrey, the War of the Five Kings had begun.

The war was set as local conflict when [[Catelyn Stark]] seized [[Tyrion Lannister]] for the attempted murder of her son, [[Bran Stark|Bran]]. Lord [[Tywin Lannister]] bore no special love for Tyrion, but he would not allow such a slight to his house's honor. He made plans to invade the [[Riverlands]], striking at Catelyn's [[Hoster Tully|father]]'s [[House Tully|house]] and bannermen, massing two hosts at [[Casterly Rock]]. One consisted of 20,000 men to be commanded by himself, with the other 15,000 men to be commanded by his son [[Jaime Lannister|Ser Jaime]]. As Tywin began amassing his armies, he sent Ser [[Gregor Clegane]] ahead to raid and pillage the Riverlands countryside, creating chaos, containing the river lords to their own keeps.
At the same time Tywin hoped to lure Lord [[Eddard Stark|Stark]] himself into the Riverlands and capture him, bringing the campaign to a swift conclusion. However, his plan was unknowingly foiled by Jaime, who after discovering his brother's capture, had his men ambush Eddard in the streets of King's Landing before fleeing for Casterly Rock. The wounded Hand thus sent Lord [[Beric Dondarrion]] to stop Gregor Clegane in his stead.

Meanwhile in the Riverlands, Ser [[Edmure Tully]] found out that the Lannisters were raising a host at Casterly Rock and sent riders to the Rock, demanding that Lord Tywin proclaim his intent. The Tully banners were called to [[Riverrun]], which proved difficult with Tywin's reavers harassing the river lords, and only 4,000 men were sent under the command of Lords [[House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest|Vance]] and [[Clement Piper|Piper]] to guard the passage between the [[Westerlands]] and the Riverlands at the [[Golden Tooth]], to prevent any Lannister army from entering Tully lands.

King [[Robert Baratheon]] died after a hunting accident, naming [[Eddard Stark]] as [[Regent|Lord Regent]] until his supposed son [[Joffrey Baratheon|Prince Joffrey]] grew to manhood. However, Joffrey immediately claims the Iron Throne with the support of his mother's powerful family, the immensely wealthy House Lannister. Eddard tried to take Joffrey into custody as a false claiamant, naming [[Stannis Baratheon]] as the rightful heir to the [[Iron Throne]]. However, he is arrested instead after being politically outmaneuvered by [[Cersei Lannister]] and [[Petyr Baelish]]. Following Joffrey's coronation, [[Renly Baratheon]] flees from King's Landing, and [[Robb Stark]] calls his father bannermen at Winterfell, hastily assembling a host of 12,000 men and marching south to [[Moat Cailin]]. Tywin invade the Riverlands.

After assembling his force on the march, Robb Stark, arrives at [[Moat Cailin]], where he is joined by his mother, [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]] and force of 1,750 from [[White Harbor]], to total 18,000 men. Moat Cailin is a formidable defensible position that held countless southron invaders in the past, where he garrisons a small force mostly consisting of archers, to hold the ruin. Additionally, Robb sends word to [[Howland Reed]] to bleed any Lannister host that attempts to come north. However, Robb knows that Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]] is too smart to try and will stay close to the Trident taking castles one by one until Riverrun stands alone and with Riverrun under siege, he has no choice but to ride south to meet him.

However, his options are limited as he can cross the [[Trident]] either at [[the Twins]] (where the [[House Frey|Freys]] remained neutral and unlikely to side with northerners) or the Ruby Ford (which Tywin could easily reach and seal off). Robb's mother Catelyn devises a plan to gain [[Walder Frey|Lord Frey's]] support. Bolstered by the Freys and [[House Mallister|Mallisters]], Robb splits his horse and foot, sending the foot down the kingsroad to engage Tywin while the horse will cross at the Twins and race to Riverrun and surprise the besiegers.

*'''[[Battle of the Green Fork]].''' Lord Tywin’s army met its first real opposition as [[House Stark]] entered the war on behalf of [[House Tully]]. [[Roose Bolton]] marched down the Kingsroad with his force of roughly 16,000 foot men, mostly infantry. He planned a night attack, but [[Addam Marbrand]]’s outriders saw them coming and roused Tywin’s army in time to prepare for battle. Tywin’s host won victory but Lord Bolton was able to retreat with the battered remnants of the army to the Twins. Seeing Robb’s attack, the besieged Lord [[Tytos Blackwood]] rode out to join the battle. Ser [[Forley Prester]] led the remaining south camp back to [[Golden Tooth]].

With the death of King Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, the realm sees rise of multiple kings who trying to fill the void, in order of proclamation: Renly Baratheon, Robb Stark, Stannis Baratheon and Balon Greyjoy. Robert's brothers Stannis and Renly who individually lay claim on the throne, divided House Baratheon three ways, between them and King Joffery who sits on the Throne. Rob Stark, proclaimed a free North and Balon Greyjoy proclaim independence of the Iron Islands.

The Iron Fleet under [[Victarion Greyjoy]] sails to [[Meereen]] to bring Daenerys and her dragons to [[Westeros]]. His fleet conduct several raids capturing dozens of ships. While the fleet is anchored near [[Volantis]] to take supplies, Victarion learns the Volantis fleet is sailing to [[Meereen]] to end the reign of [[Daenerys Targaryen]]. The '''Ironborn''', also known as the '''Ironmen''' are the natives of the [[Iron Islands]] off the west coast of [[Westeros]]. The Ironmen are fierce men of the sea, and their naval supremacy was once unmatched, their dark legacy of raids and pillage of the hinterlands of the western and southern regions granting them, to this day, a fearsome reputation as the "terror of the seas". Ironborn women may fight as well as a man, and may crew a longship or even captain their own ships. It is said that the sea gives them the appetites of a man. Bastards born in the Iron Islands are given the surname Pyke.

==History==
The [[Iron Islands]] were settled by the [[First Men]] many thousands of years ago. Somewhat isolated from the rest of [[Westeros]], they did not take up the worship of the [[Old Gods]] of the Forest, instead creating their own religion based around the [[Drowned God]] and the [[Seastone Chair]], which they allegedly found already standing on the shores of [[Old Wyk]] when they arrived. When the [[Andals]] overran Westeros and conquered the Iron Islands, they intermingled with the natives. Whilst a few locals converted to the [[Faith of the Seven]], it did not fully take hold and worship of the Drowned God continued.

Under the rule of [[House Hoare]], the ironborn reached the zenith of their power approximately four centuries ago. They ruled over the [[Riverlands]] and much of the western coast of [[Westeros]]. After the [[War of Conquest]] the Ironborn were thrown back to their islands. With [[Harren the Black]] and all his line extinguished. The Ironborn were subjects of the [[Seven Kingdoms]] and the kings peace for almost three hundred years, untill nine years after the [[War of the Usurper]], that they [[Greyjoy Rebellion|revolted]] in an attempt to restore the Old Ways.

The Old Ways are still highly regarded on the Iron Islands. The Old Way embodies the remembered values of a culture based on raiding. A man's worth was judged primarily on his skill as a raider, as evidenced in the disdain jewelry and ornament bought with coin. Men on the Iron Islands wear no tokens unless they have "paid the iron price," i.e. won by combat and taken from the corpses of they have slain.

During raids, the ironborn also took captives. Many of their captives would work as [[Thrall|thralls]], slaving away on the farms and mines of the [[Iron Islands]] since the true sons of the Iron Islands are meant for more than such drudgery. Women were also taken captive to act as bed warmers; a man could have several "[[Salt wife|salt wives]]" but only one true ironborn wife, his "[[rock wife]]".

The Ironborn ways and legacy of raiding has left them particularly toned for the task. Their swift shallow wooden [[ships|longships]], allow them to mount raids on the coasts of Westeros and far inland by river and stream, for which they are still remembered over three hundred years since their last major raiding and pillaging streak. Almost every house has at least one longship.

They are daring masters of the sea, fearless of drowning and thus more heavily armored at sea than is typical. In battle, they will try to board enemy ships and slaughter the crews and on land they keep to the lands, striking fast and moving on before local forces could muster.

The Faith worships the Seven, a single deity with seven aspects or faces, each representing a different virtue. Worshipers pray to specific aspects of the Seven for help and guidance depending on their need. The aspects are:

The Faith of the Seven is the offical religion of the Seven Kingdoms and is heavily integrated into its [[Law and Justice|laws]] and culture. The Faith has a great many moral teachings. It frowns on gambling, preaches against bastardy, and curses things like incest and [[kinslaying]]. One of the central holy texts of the Faith is ''[[Seven-Pointed Star|The Seven-Pointed Star]]'', which is divided into gospel-like sections, such as the ''Maiden's Book,'' also called ''The Book of the Maiden.'' Presumably, each of the Seven has his or her own book. [[Maiden, Mother, and Crone]] is a song about the females of the seven. In order to become a knight, a squire must spend a nightlong vigil in a sept and become anointed in the name of the Seven. For this reason, there are few knights in areas where the Faith is not kept, such as the [[North]].

The number seven is considered holy to the Faith. It holds that there are seven hells as well as seven faces. The seven [[wanderer]]s in the sky are considered as sacred, and even grace is taught to have seven aspects. The number seven is used to invest rituals or objects with a holy significance. Adherents of the Faith use seven-pointed stars, crystal prisms, and rainbows as icons of the religion. Rites of worship heavily involve the use of light and crystals to represent the seven-in-one god.

The places of worship of the Seven are called "septs", and every sept houses representational art portraying each of the seven aspects. In rural septs, they may merely be carved masks or simple charcoal drawings on a wall, while in wealthy septs, they may be statutes inlaid with precious metals and stones. Worshipers light candles before the altars of the symbolizing each of the seven aspects. Ceremonies are lead by the highest ranking male member of the clergy, and hymns are often sung. In the naming of a child, seven oils are used to anoint the infant. Weddings are conducted standing between the altars of the Father and the Mother. Rites of worship held in rich areas and during special occasions can feature embellishments such as choirs of seventy-seven septas.

According to ''The Seven-Pointed Star'': The Father brought down seven stars from heaven and placed them on the brow of [[Hugor of the Hill]], the first king of the Andals, to form his crown and the Maid brought forth a girl supple as a willow with eyes like deep blue pools that became Hugor his first wife, the Mother made her fertile, who bore him forty-four mighty sons as foretold by the Crone. The Warrior gave each son strength of arms and the Smith wrought each a suit of iron plate.{{ref|adwd|5}}

The Faith was brought to Westeros by the [[Andal]]s who [[Andal Invasion|invaded]] from the [[Essos]], more than six thousand years ago. where it largely supplanted the local worship of the [[Old Gods]]. The city of [[Oldtown]] became the center of the Faith, and the [[Starry Sept]] in the city served as the seat of the High Septon for a thousand years until the Targaryens came.

When [[Aegon I|Aegon the Conqueror]], invaded Westeros, he adopted the Seven and gained support of the High Septon, who proclaimed that the Faith Militant would not offer resistance to the Targaryen invasion. However, that changed upon Aegon's death and the passing of the Iron Throne to his son Aenys I. The Faith withdrew their allegiance and the Militant orders supported those [[lord]]s who opposed the Targaryens.

The resulting civil war raged through the reigns of [[Aenys I]] and Maegor the Cruel and into the start of the reign of [[Jaehaerys I Targaryen|Jaehaerys I]]. Maegor's brutal repression of the Faith caused tens of thousands of deaths. Eventually, Jaehaerys offered peace to the Faith and [[House Targaryen|House Targaryen's]] unwavering defense and support in return for the militant orders disbanding to which they agreed. Jaehaerys I appointed Septon [[Barth]] the [[Hand of the King]] and had forty years of peace and prosperity.

The High Septon and the Most Devout moved the center of the faith to the new capital of [[King's Landing]]. Upon the death of King [[Daeron I]], [[Baelor I]], the septon king assured the [[Iron Throne]] and built the Great Sept of Baelor atop [[Visenya's hill]]. Baelor decided not to re-arm the faith, as Baelor was a man of peace who believed the only weapon the faithful should have is prayer.During his reign he had a stonemason named as the [[High Septon]], a man that could carve stonework so beautifully that Baelor believed him to be the Smith in human form. While a fantastic stonecarver, the new High Septon could not read, write or recite any prayers. Rumor spread that Baelor's Hand had him poisoned to end the embarrassment to the realm. Baelor then raised a boy of eight years to High Septon, who Baelor claimed worked miracles, although the boy could not save the king's life on his deathbed.{{Ref|aFfC|28}} History says Baelor starved himself to death by prolonged fasting to cleanse himself of lust.{{Ref|aSoS|59}}

In the aftermath of the [[War of the Five Kings]], religious fervor in the Seven Kingdoms saw an increase. Many pilgrims and refugees, often called "sparrows", took up the badges and arms of Poor Fellows to protect themselves and other homeless victims of the war. Groups of Poor Fellows took to guarding the Great Sept of Baelor and serving particularly pious nobles. Though common-born, the Poor Fellows showed no respect for secular rank or social position. During her reign as Queen Regent, [[Cersei Lannister]] officially reinstated both orders of the Faith Militant as a concession to the new High Septon. Many knights, including Cersei's own cousin [[Lancel Lannister]], joined the reformed Warrior's Sons in the aftermath.

The old gods seem like a sort of animistic religion. The [[greenseer]]s of the children, shamans of a kind, were said to be able to talk with all beasts and birds, and to see through the eyes of their carved [[weirwood]]s and posses strong magic. There are no priests, no holy texts, no songs of worship, and practically no rites that go with the worship of the old gods. It’s a folk-religion, passed from generation to generation. The closest thing to a ritual we’ve seen is prayer before the heart tree in a godswood, holy groves contained within castles throughout the Seven Kingdoms, and often the only places where living weirwoods still remain until one goes north of the Wall. The faces were carved into the weirwoods by the children of the forest, but their meaning or purpose is not completely understood by humans. Once all noble houses had a godswood with a heart tree in its center, but many families that no longer follow the Old Gods have converted their godswoods into secular gardens. It's said that the old gods only have power where the heart tree faces can see, and since the destruction of most of the heart trees in the south they have no power there.

== History ==
The Old Gods were originally worshipped by the [[Children of the forest]] in all of [[Westeros]] since before first recorded history, thousands of years before the arrival of the [[First Men]] from the east. The First Men warred with the children, and cut down the weirwoods where they found them. In time, the First Men [[Pact|made peace]] with children of the forest and adopted their gods.

Worship of the Old Gods remained strong across Westeros until [[Andal Invasion]], who brought their [[Faith of the Seven]] with them from the east. The Andals gradually
conquered the south of Westeros, cutting down the weirwoods supplanting the worship of the Old Gods with their own. However, the Old Gods are still worshiped in the North, and by the [[wildlings]] [[beyond the Wall]].

A '''skinchanger''' or '''warg''' is a person with the ability to enter the mind of an animal and control its actions. It is much easier for a skinchanger to do so if a bond exists between the two parties. The interaction between the skinchanger’s and animal’s mind will influence both personalities, with detrimental effects to the human if the animal’s influence is not fought. As yet, there has only been one known incidence of a skinchanger entering another human’s mind, and only a simple-minded one at that. This incidence was particularly traumatic to the person involved, and difficult for the skinchanger. Such an event proves to be a moral and ethical dilemma.

An untrained skinchanger may unconsciously enter the mind of an animal, especially while sleeping, particularly if a bond exists. It is extremely traumatic if an animal is killed while its mind is inhabited by a skinchanger. If a skinchanger is killed while inhabiting a creature, a part of his consciousness will remain in the creature. Much fear and superstition exists around skinchangers, with many mistakenly believing them to be shape shifters. It is said the greatest of the skinchangers were the [[greenseer|greenseers]], who amongst many other things could warg. The greatest amongst them could wear the skin of any beast. One man in a thousand is born a skinchanger, and one skin changer in a thousand could be a greenseer.

Nature of the beasts, according to [[Haggon]]:
* Dogs, are easy to bond with, because they are so much like humans and trusting, it becomes easier with time to warg into one.
* Wolves, are harder, One has to forge a lasting bound much like a marriage. A man might befriend a wolf, even break a wolf, but no man could truly tame a wolf.
* Birds, are very tempting, you may soon loose contact to the mundane things of earth, and want only to fly.
* Cats, are cruel and vain beasts and can’t be easily controlled, only forced.
* Elk and deer were prey, wear their skins too long and even the bravest man became a coward.

Unwritten code of ethic for [[wildling]] Skinchangers, as was told by [[Haggon]], forbids them:

==Second Life==
A skinchanger can experience many deaths while Warged into another body. It is only when the person's human body dies that the "True death" occurs. It is possible for the warg to live a type of second life, a much simpler life inside the mind of an animal he controls. ==Overview==
The Age of Heroes began with the signing of the [[Pact]] of the [[Isle of Faces]]. The [[Pact]] ended the [[War of the First Men and the Children of the Forest]],{{Ref|aGoT|66}} and lasted for nearly four thousand years.

During that time, a hundred kingdoms rose and fell. This was a rugged time where many ancient traditions and legacies forged by the [[First Men]] were established, with influence from the children. Many of these customs live on among the lords of the [[North]], who still bear the blood of the First Men in their veins. The laws of hospitality, the obligation of a judge to also be the executioner, and the renowned [[Wall]] are all accredited to these ancestors of the [[northmen]] even the barrows of the [[First Men]] can still be found throughout the [[North]]. This was the time when many legendary kings and heroes walked the earth, such as:

The '''Children of the Forest''', sometimes referred to simply as the "children" are a mysterious non-human race that originally inhabited [[Westeros]] continent, long before the arrival of the [[First Men]] during the [[Dawn Age]], more than 12,000 years ago.

==Culture==
Little is known about the children. They are a mysterious and magical people who have not been seen by humans for thousands of years. Tales describe them as diminutive humanoid creatures, dark and beautiful, at their tallest no larger than children. The [[giants]] call them ''woh dak nag gram'' ('little squirrel people'). They call themselves in the [[True Tongue]] ''those who sing the songs of the earth''. {{Ref|aDwD|13}}

The children did not use metal, weave cloth or build cities; instead they lived off the land, using stone implements, wearing bark leg-bindings and shirts of woven leaves, dwelling in caves, crannogs, and hidden tree villages. Males and females both hunted side by side. They were a people with a deep connection to the land.{{Ref|aGoT|66}} The children wielded [[obsidian]] weapons and bows in battle, but also used powerful [[magic]].

Legends say the children of the forest were gifted with supernatural powers and magic; having power over the beasts of the wood, the ability to wear an animal’s skin, and the skill to create music so beautiful as to bring tears to the eyes of any who heard it, and the [[greensight]] ability (although the [[Maesters]] believe that the greensight was not magic, simply another kind of knowledge). It was the children who carved the faces on the [[weirwood]]s to keep watch over the woods.{{Ref|aCoK|28}} They believe that their wisdom had something to do with the faces in the trees {{Ref|aCoK|28}} The children of the forest believed that the weirwood trees were the Gods, and when they died they became a part of them.{{ref|aDwD|36}}

==Appearance==
They were smaller than men with nut-brown skin, dappled like a deer's with paler spots. They had large ears that could hear things that no man could hear.

They usually had large eyes, great golden cat's eyes, that could see down passages where a boy's eyes saw only blackness. They have vertical, slit-like pupils; this trait is responsible for improved night vision and typically associated with a nocturnal lifestyle in such creatures as cats (the Children's eyes are described in ''A Dance With Dragons'' as resembling cats' eyes) and many species of snakes, including nearly all vipers (despite [[Doran Martell]]'s reference to his brother [[Oberyn Martell|Oberyn's]] "viper eyes," however, the Red Viper is never described as sharing this feature with the Children of the Forest). A few had green or red eyes; these had the gift of [[greensight]] and were known as [[greenseer]]s.

Their hands had only three fingers and a thumb, with sharp black claws instead of nails.{{Ref|aDwD|34}} The children were slight, quick, and graceful.

==History==
It is unknown for how long the children lived alone in [[Westeros]], nor where they themselves came from. Eventually about 12,000 years ago, they came in contact with the [[First Men]], the first outsiders. These invaders brought with them bronze, great leathern shields, and the first [[horse]]s and their own gods. Burning the great [[Weirwood]]s as they came, leading to [[War_of_the_First_Men_and_the_Children_of_the_Forest|war]] between the two.

The two races fought a desperate war for dominance, the children used their magic to shatter the [[Stepstones|Arm of Dorne]], the land-bridge through which the first men came, in a futile attempt to end the invasion and later flooded the Neck, legend has it that the children called upon their [[Old Gods|gods]] from the [[Children's Tower]] to send the hammer of the waters to smash the Neck, but it was not enough to stop the advance of the [[First Men]]. Eventually they fought one another to a standstill. The two races agreed to peaceful coexistence and signed the [[Pact]] on the [[Isle of Faces]], granting the open lands to humanity and the forests to the Children.

The Pact lasted for four thousand years before the enigmatic [[Others]] invaded from the uttermost north, bringing death and destruction to both races, during an extended period of winter known as [[The Long Night]], the children of the forest joined with the First Men, to fight against the Others in the [[The Long Night#War for the Dawn|War for the Dawn]]. Eventually the [[Others]] were driven back into the [[Lands of Always Winter]].

The children of the forest taught the worship of the Old Gods to the First Men, but this was largely supplanted in the South by the [[Faith of the Seven]] after the [[Andal|Andal Invasion]]. Relations between the children and humans grew distant over the years, until they ceased altogether. By the time of Aegon's Landing, humans had not seen the children for thousands of years.{{Ref|aGoT|66}}

After the [[The Long Night#War for the Dawn|War for the Dawn]], the First Men and the children of the forest lived in relative peace, but in these years, the children of the forest began their slow withdrawal from the lands of men, retreating deeper into their forests and beyond the [[Wall]].

Although people in [[Westeros]] believe the children of the forest to be extinct there are a few that still live in the world of men. A dwindling remnant of their population is located far north of the [[Wall]], in [[cave of the three-eyed crow|a cave system under a hill]]; the entrance is a warded cleft in the hillside.{{Ref|aDwD|34}}

The caves are timeless, vast, silent. They are home to more than three score living singers and the bones of thousands dead, and extend far below the hollow hill. The children of the forest live with whom they refer to as ''the [[Three-eyed crow|Last Greenseer]]''. In the caves there are passages that go deep, bottomless pits and sudden shafts, forgotten ways that lead to the very center of the earth. [[Leaf]] tells [[Bran Stark]] that even the children of the forest have not explored them all, even though they have lived there for a thousand thousand man-years. [[Bran]] realises that they are indeed singers, he hears them singing.
