This chapter covers the events of [[A Feast for Crows-Chapter 5|Chapter 5 of ''A Feast for Crows'']], but from [[Jon Snow|Jon's]] perspective rather than [[Samwell Tarly]]'s.

==Synopsis==
Jon summons Gilly and, despite his own misgivings, forces her to give up her own child and take [[Mance Rayder]]'s baby away with her disguised as her own. Gilly is distraught but Jon tells her that [[Melisandre]] will burn the child for the purposes of a spell, as Mance was [[King-Beyond-The-Wall]] and the blood of kings has sorcerous power. Jon promises her that if Mance's son is burned her own will die as well. She leaves wordlessly.

Soon after Sam arrives. After a brief discussion regarding what they know of [[the Others]] and how to stop such monsters, Jon breaks the news that he is sending Sam to the [[Citadel]] so he can train to become a maester and replace [[Maester Aemon]]. Sam will travel by sea from [[Eastwatch]], along with Gilly, the baby, and Maester Aemon. Sam leaves him distraught, while Jon remembers something Maester Aemon told him when he became Lord Commander of the Night's Watch

Kill the boy and let the man be born.}} Jon makes his inspection of Castle Black, during which he hears a report from [[Dywen]] and [[Kedge Whiteye]] that two of the [[Queen's Men]], Ser [[Richard Horpe]] and Ser [[Justin Massey]], were seen riding off to the south.

The next morning, Jon wakes early to see off Sam, Gilly, and Maester Aemon, as they depart for [[Eastwatch]]. He then meets with ranger [[Bedwyck]]. Jon tells Bedwyck that he is putting a garrison in the abandoned way-castle [[Icemark]] and giving him command of it. Both of them assert the danger of wildlings climbing over and creating a toehold for the rest, referring to [[Raymun Redbeard]] having done just that bypassing the wall. Jon says he is intending to garrison all of the Castles on [[the Wall]], but for the time being, only Icemark and Greyguard. When he learns who is to command Greyguard, Bedwyck urges Jon to choose someone more trustworthy.

Half the morning passed before Lord Janos reported as commanded, escorted by [[Kegs]] and [[Eddison Tollett|Dolorous Edd]]. Jon tells him that he is giving him command of [[Greyguard]] (partly in light of Slynt's years commanding the City Watch, but primarily to seperate Slynt from [[Alliser Thorne]] and end their scheming), but Slynt curses him and storms out. Jon finds Slynt breaking his fast in the common room. Jon announces that he is giving Slynt one last chance to drop his spoon and report to the stables to depart for Greyguard. After Slynt refuses him again and mocks him in front of his men and Stannis' men, Jon instructs [[Iron Emmett]] and Edd to take Slynt to the Wall and hang him. As Slynt is being dragged out, Jon changes his mind ... and orders a block brought so he can behead Slynt with [[Longclaw]] himself. With his head on the block, Slynt desperately begs Jon for mercy: Jon refuses and carries out the execution. Watching from the steps of the [[King's Tower]], Stannis' eyes meet Jon's, and he nods briefly in approval.

==Synopsis==
[[Bran Stark|Bran]] is making his way through the [[Haunted Forest]], in search of the [[three-eyed crow]], accompanied by the Reeds, [[Hodor]], and [[Coldhands]]. Bran skinchanges into [[Summer]] frequently, and even into Hodor, although Hodor seems to dislike the experience. Coldhands is riding on an elk and is accompanied by ravens. Jojen is becoming ill and weak.

Coldhands stops to deal with "foes" he refuses to name, backtracking while the others continue on. [[Meera Reed|Meera]] points out that they have never seen Coldhand's breath even in the icy weather - and he does not eat, or drink, or sleep. Bran says that Coldhands saved Sam and Gilly from [[wight]]s, so they must trust him.

Bran wargs into Summer in order to find an abandoned wildling village for shelter. As they rest Jojen refuses to eat despite his weakness, telling his sister that this is not the day he dies. All four of them are near starving, but they refrain from lighting a fire at Coldhand's instruction. Sleepless, Bran wargs into Summer on the hunt, who has found the corpses of five men - and the wolf pack that found them first. Summer/Bran squares off for a fight against [[One Eye|the leader]] of the pack, seeing in his eyes that he is in fact a warg like him. Bran/Summer defeats the pack leader, making the pack his and giving him the choice parts of the dead men. The dead men are in black - men of the Night's Watch.

Bran awakens to a fire - Coldhands has killed a pig for them, and as the dawn is near he allows them to light a fire to roast them. Bran asks Coldhands, who fears the flames, what happened to the foes. Coldhands replies that they will not trouble him - he does not deny that they are dead at his hand. Only Jojen pays attention when Bran asks who they were - but he already knows they were men of the Night's Watch. Bran asks the ranger about his black hands, and he tells Bran that the blood runs into a man's extremities and congeals once he is dead. Meera demands to see his face, which he refuses. Bran notes that he could not pass beyond the Wall and its enchantments.

Meera asks who the three-eyed crow is and he replies "A friend. Dreamer, wizard, call him what you will. The last [[greenseer]]". Meera asks Jojen if he has dreamed this and he says they have come too far to go back now.

Cersei describes Melara as a girl older than [[Jeyne Farman]]. She is contrasted to the "fat" Jeyne, implying she was slender or outright skinny. Melara was pretty, though she had freckles. He was only "seventeen" but won distinction in the jousting, unseating two Lannister men, and a dozen of the finest jousters serving Tywin. [[Genna Lannister]] informed Cersei that she would be betrothed to Rhaegar at the final feast of the tourney. {{Ref|aFfC|24}}

During the Tourney, Melara (then aged eleven) heard the serving girls whisper about Maggy. Hearing tales of Maggy able to curse a man, or make him fall in love, able to summon demons and foretell the future. She apparently passed the tales on to Cersei and [[Jeyne Farman]]. At night the three girls stole from their beds, crossing the tourney grounds to seek out the sorceress. They were disguised in roughspun, brown cloaks with their hoods pooled up. Hiding their features. They were excited and afraid. Cersei was scared, but unwilling to show fear while the girls were watching her. By the time they located the tent of Maggy, "all torches were guttering out". Maggy tried to get the two remaining girls to leave. But Cersei insisted on getting a foretelling, and Melara clarified that they wanted to know what men were they going to marry. But first she had to taste the blood of the two girls. First that Cersei would never marry the prince (Rhaegar), she would instead marry the king (Robert). Second, that Cersei would become queen. Only to be cast down by another, younger and more beautiful than herself. Third that Cersei and the king will have children. But the king will have sixteen children, and Cersei only three. The answer to the third question included a prophecy that "the valonqar" would wrap his hands around the throat of Cersei, choking the life of her. A prediction of Cersei's death. Cersei took that as an insult and wanted to leave, asking Melara to follow her out of the tent. {{Ref|aFfC|36}}

Melara insisted it was her turn to get three questions. Refusing to leave. Cersei tugged upon her arm, but Melara wriggled free of her grip. Melara first asked if she would one day marry [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]]. Maggy replied that she would never marry Jaime, nor any other man. Worms would get Melara's maidenhead. She warned the "little one" that her death was there tonight. That "she" (Melara's death) is very close, and that Melara could even smell "her breath". {{Ref|aFfC|36}} Melara didn't have time to ask her remaining two questions. Cersei snatched a potion and threw it into the eyes of Maggy. The two girls fled the tent as Maggy screamed at them. ==Implications==
The text leaves unclear whether the death of Melara was an accident. Cersei recalling the dying screams of Melara, implies that Cersei was herself near the well. Or at least near enough to listen to the screams. The possibility exists that Cersei herself pushed Melara down the wall. She had two reasons to do so. First because of anger that Melara aspired to marry Jaime. <ref name="Citadel1"> [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Prophecies/Entry/1827/ "The Citadel: Prophecies- Maggy the Frog's Prophecy" (2006)] "As we learn from Cersei, Melara Hetherspoon "fell" down a well and drowned soon after (IV: 413). This piece of language suggests it was an accident. However, other details, such as Cersei's recollection of how she "screamed and shouted" in the well (IV: 583-584) and Maggy's uncanny accuracy, make it seem much likelier that Cersei pushed her down the well herself. The reason as to why she would do such a thing is clearly anger over her pretensions to Jaime's hand, made clear from the middle paragraph, and from an earlier remark in which she claims Melara proved to be a "greedy little schemer..." (IV: 356) Also, it may relate to Cersei's recollection that Melara had convinced her that if neither of them spoke of the prophecy, it wouldn't come to pass (IV: 544). [[Faith of the Seven|Septa]] Saranella told her that "valonqar" was [[High Valyrian]] for "little brother". The meaning convinced Cersei that her valonqar was [[Tyrion Lannister]]. {{Ref|aFfC|39}}

After thinking of Melara as a friend, the adult Cersei corrects herself. Thinking that Melara had turned out to be "a greedy little schemer with ideas above her station". She also thinks of Melara as the person who taught her never to trust anyone. Anyone except Jaime. {{Ref|aFfC|24}} On another occasion, Cersei thinks that Melara was only the first person to repay Cersei's kindness with betrayal. Blaming her and Jeyne Farman for taking her to Maggy in the first place. Cersei thinks of the other women who betrayed her in similar ways: [[Senelle]] and [[Sansa Stark]]. ==Implications==
The text leaves unclear whether the death of Melara was an accident. Cersei recalling the dying screams of Melara, implies that Cersei was herself near the well. Or at least near enough to listen to the screams. The possibility exists that Cersei herself pushed Melara down the wall. She had two reasons to do so. First because of anger that Melara aspired to marry Jaime. <ref name="Citadel1"> [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Prophecies/Entry/1827/ "The Citadel: Prophecies- Maggy the Frog's Prophecy" (2006)] "As we learn from Cersei, Melara Hetherspoon "fell" down a well and drowned soon after (IV: 413). This piece of language suggests it was an accident. However, other details, such as Cersei's recollection of how she "screamed and shouted" in the well (IV: 583-584) and Maggy's uncanny accuracy, make it seem much likelier that Cersei pushed her down the well herself. The reason as to why she would do such a thing is clearly anger over her pretensions to Jaime's hand, made clear from the middle paragraph, and from an earlier remark in which she claims Melara proved to be a "greedy little schemer..." (IV: 356) Also, it may relate to Cersei's recollection that Melara had convinced her that if neither of them spoke of the prophecy, it wouldn't come to pass (IV: 544). The second reason would be Melara's own insistence that the prophecy had to be kept secret. Cersei may have decided against trusting Melara. Feeling that the only way for two people to keep a secret, is for one of them to die and remain silent. <ref name="Citadel1"/>

One an old woman, the other a young girl, In other words Maggy herself and Cersei. <ref name="Forum1"/>

Joffrey acts as if it is beneath his dignity to fight [[House Stark|Starks]] with play swords. He suggests real swords, and Robb accepts, but Ser Rodrik refuses to let them. [[Sandor Clegane]] steps forward and says they should let them, that he killed a man with an edged blade when he was only twelve. Joffrey makes a few more condescending remarks, enraging Robb, but Theon holds him back from attacking the Prince. Then Joff and Tommen leave. Jon says that Arya should go to her room, or the punishment will be worse the longer she leaves it. Arya returns to her room to find not only Septa Mordane, but also her mother.

A secret letter from [[Lysa Tully|Lysa]] to her sister [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] convinces [[Eddard Stark|Ned]] to go to [[King's Landing]].

==Synopsis==
Eddard and Catelyn are in Catelyn bedchamber in [[Winterfell]], after making love. The chamber is always warm, because of the hot springs beneath the castle and Eddard gets up and opens the windows, not liking the heat. Catelyn hopes they may have conceived another child. They discuss the [[Robert Baratheon|king's]] offer, Eddard says that he will refuse, but Catelyn says he must not, that King Robert is different from the man he grew up with, that his pride must not be offended. Eddard says he wishes [[Brandon Stark|Brandon]] had lived, to be the Lord and the [[Hand of the King|King's Hand]].

They are interrupted by [[Desmond]], who says that [[Maester]] [[Luwin]] has an urgent message for Eddard. Maester Luwin says that a message had been left, in a carved wooden box in his observatory. There was a glass lens within it, and a message hidden beneath a false bottom. Maester Luwin says he has not read it, and will not give it to Eddard, for it is addressed to Catelyn.

Catelyn takes the message, apprehensively. It is from [[Lysa Arryn|Lysa]], and written in a secret language the two sisters share. She asks Maester Luwin to stay and keep them counsel, and tells them that Lysa claims that [[Jon Arryn]] was murdered, by the Queen and the [[House Lannister|Lannister]]s. Catelyn says that now Eddard must go be the King's Hand, to find the truth behind Lysa's accusations.

Eddard deliberates, then makes his decision. He will go, but Catelyn must stay behind, to run Winterfell and teach [[Robb Stark|Robb]] the art of governing. He says that [[Rickon Stark|Rickon]] may stay with her as well, but the others must come south--[[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] to wed [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], [[Arya Stark|Arya]] to learn the ways of court, and [[Bran Stark|Bran]] to foster with the King's children and bridge the gap between Robb and Joffrey.

Maester Luwin asks about [[Jon Snow]]. Catelyn remembers the bastard child that Eddard brought back with him in the early days of their marriage. There were rumours that [[Ashara Dayne]] was his mother, but Eddard forbade her to ask about him, saying only that Jon was his blood. Eddard would never send him away, and Catelyn could never forgive him that. Catelyn insists that Jon must leave, but Eddard says he cannot take him to court. Maester Luwin mentions that [[Benjen Stark]] had told him of Jon Snow's ambitions to join the [[Night's Watch]]. Eddard agrees to let Jon take the black, though not until they are ready to leave for the south.

He saw through Cersei's false smile, saw that [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] seemed smitten with [[Robb Stark|Robb]], and wasn't impressed with fat King Robert or Prince [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]. He thought [[Jaime Lannister]] looked like a proper king, and [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] was grotesquely fascinating.

Jon feeds his direwolf [[Ghost]], who was sitting under the table and watches the pup silently face down another dog three times his size. He was allowed to bring his wolf to the feast when his brothers and sisters were not. He is joined by his uncle [[Benjen Stark|Benjen]]. He asks Jon how much he's had to drink, and says Jon is older than he was when he first got truly drunk. Benjen asks why he is not at the main table, and Jon says flatly that [[Catelyn Stark|Catelyn]] thought seating a bastard with the King might give offense.

Benjen comments that [[Eddard Stark|Eddard]] does not seem festive, and Jon adds that the queen is not, either, probably because of Robert's visit to the crypts. Benjen commends Jon's keen skills of observation and remarks that he could use a man like him on the [[Wall]]. Jon asks if he can return to the Wall with Benjen. Benjen says it's a hard place for someone so young, and Jon counters that it's said bastards grow up faster than purebloods. Benjen says that he should know a woman first, to know what he will be giving up, father a bastard or two. Jon says angrily that he would never father a bastard, and storms off, Ghost at his heels.

Eddard makes obeisance to him as Queen [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei ]] and the younger children debark from the wheelhouse. After the formalities, Robert insists on being taken down to the crypt to pay his respects where Eddard's father, Lord [[Rickard Stark|Rickard]], his elder brother, [[Brandon Stark|Brandon]], and his sister, [[Lyanna Stark|Lyanna]], are buried.

Ned asks Robert about his travel, and Robert complains of the distance, the lack of people and decent inns, and the snow, even in late summer. Robert talks about the advantages of living in the south. They descend into the crypt, which is an effort for the out-of-shape Robert. Robert wants to visit the tomb of Eddard's sister [[Lyanna Stark]], who had been his betrothed. He wishes she were buried on a sunny hillside, instead of deep in the dark earth. Eddard says he was with her when she died, and she wanted to be lain here. He remembers her dying, and his friend [[Howland Reed]] being nearby. Robert recalls taking his vengeance on [[Rhaegar Targaryen]] for what he did to her.

Eddard asks about [[Jon Arryn]], and Robert says that he sickened and died quickly, within a fortnight. Theon comments that direwolves have not been seen south of [[the Wall]] for two hundred years. Robb is cradling a pup, of which there are five, and he gives one to Bran. When they inspect the mother's corpse, they find a large piece of shattered antler lodged in her throat. The soldiers in the company feel this is a bad omen. Theon offers to kill the pups, but Bran won't let him. Robb says they will keep them. Jon points out that there are five pups, one for each of Eddard's legitimate children, and that they are meant to have the wolves.

Eddard says the children must feed the pups themselves, not pass them off to the servants, and must treat them well lest they become dangerous as they grow older. Jaime cautions his uncle not to try and take on [[Sandor Clegane]] or [[Beric Dondarrion]], and that he would have made a good [[Hand of the King|Hand]]. Kevan rejects him coolly, and lets Jaime know he knows about the relationship of the twins.

As Jaime returns to [[King's Landing]], he looks upon the encamped Lannister army, which will soon board the [[House Redwyne|Redwynes']] fleet to lay siege to [[Dragonstone]]. He finds his sister in her solar as Grand Maester [[Pycelle]] delivers news that Ser [[Bronn]] has named [[Lollys Stokeworth|Lollys]]'s bastard newborn "[[Tyrion Tanner|Tyrion]]". Jaime realizes that his sister may try to have Bronn killed for this jape, and he recalls the look on her face the night of [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]]'s wedding when the [[Tower of the Hand]] was aflame. This called to mind the madness of King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys]] and the way he would become arosed by fire. Jaime recalls Aerys' rape of [[Rhaella Targaryen|his wife]] the evening he had Lord [[Qarlton Chelsted|Chelsted]] burned alive. Jaime had the guard of the queen's bedchamber when she was screaming at her husband. When Jaime said that they were sworn to protect her too, his partner that night, Ser [[Jonothor Darry]], said, "We are, but not from him."

Jaime asks to speak with Cersei alone, and asks her why she keeps Lady [[Taena of Myr|Taena]] around all the time, knowing that she is a spy for [[Margaery Tyrell|Margaery]]. Cersei responds that Taena is more her spy, considering that the Queen Regent can do more for the [[House Merryweather|Merryweather family]]. Jaime cautions that she doesn't truly know the woman, but Cersei remarks that she may make [[Orton Merryweather|Taena's husband]] the Hand. After Jaime asks her about the rumor that she plans to name [[Aurane Waters]] her new master of ships, he recommends that she would be better off naming [[Paxter Redwyne]]. But Cersei will not put any Tyrells vassals on her small council. Cersie also defends her choice of [[Qyburn]] to join the council, a digraced and twisted maester. Cersie's growing paranoia and brutality are becoming more evident and Jaime retorts, "You are seeing dwarves in every shadow and making foes of friends. Uncle Kevan is not your enemy. I am not your enemy." However, Cersei throws him out of her solar in fury.

In the White Sword Tower, Jaime speaks with [[Loras Tyrell]], asking him what he knew of certain famous kingsguard. Ser Loras is well-versed, but when the Lord Commander mentions some lesser-known kingsguard, the Knight of Flowers does not recognize their names. Jaime points out that all of them served well, perhaps even better than the famous knights. Loras remarks that the great Kingsguard knights will always be remembered as heroes, but Jaime reminds him that the most infamous will also be remembered. And then there are those who aren't easily classified, of which he offers as an example [[Criston Cole]], the Kingmaker.

==Synopsis==
Drawing near [[Maidenpool]], [[Podrick Payne|Pod Payne]] can't seem to remember if [[Brienne of Tarth|Brienne]] is a knight or a lady, frequently calling her 'My Lady. Ser.' Brienne has taken up his training, abandoned since [[Aron Santagar]] was killed by the mob in [[King's Landing]]. They soon come upon a farmer, his wife and their cart of eggs bound for Maidenpool. As they ride together, the farmer tells Brienne that the city has been mostly rebuilt, thanks to the hard hand of [[Randyll Tarly]]. The Maid of Tarth hopes she can slip through town without encountering the Lord of [[Horn Hill]], as she owed him a debt but bore no liking for the man. At the gates of Maidenpool, the captain informs the farmer that he will take his eggs, forcing Brienne to draw her sword. Outnumbered by the gate guards, she is spared fighting by the appearance of [[Hyle Hunt]], a knight highly placed in Lord Tarly's army and a man whom Brienne despises.

When Hunt begins to mock her and Brienne warns him that she will sort him out in a melee some day, just as she had Red [[Ronnet Connington]] during the melee at [[Ashford]]. She asks him the location of the [[Stinking Goose]], but Ser Hyle takes her to see Lord Randyll first. The commander of [[Mace Tyrell]]'s vanguard is dispensing his harsh brand of justice when they come upon him. When she is brought before him, Lord Tarly asks her if she killed [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]], and then states he should ship her back to [[Tarth]]. But Brienne reveals the King's document that [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]] had given her, and she informs Tarly that she is seeking Sansa. He responds that Sansa is not in Maidenpool, nor would she be in [[the Vale]], as Brienne had also assumed, since [[Lysa Arryn]] is dead.

Brienne is shocked to learn that Sansa's aunt is dead, Brienne heads off to the tavern, sending Ser Hyle off when he attempts to apologize for his actions at [[Highgarden]]. Later, awaiting the arrival of [[Dick Crabb|Nimble Dick]] at the Stinking Goose, she recalls the hurtful game Hyle and his friends played at her expense. Brienne had gone to Highgarden to answer Renly Baratheon's call to banners, expecting to be ridiculed. But unbelievably, many of the young knights she met ([[Ben Bushy|Big Ben Bushy]], [[Edmund Ambrose]], [[Hyle Hunt]], [[Ronnet Connington|Red Ronnet Connington]], [[Hugh Beesbury]], [[Richard Farrow]], [[Owen Inchfield]], and [[Mark Mullendore]]) were exceedingly kind to her, going above and beyond the others to win her favor. Wary of their intentions, Brienne was still vulnerable thanks to hope, but she soon learned the truth. Randyll Tarly called her before him to reveal what he had learned of their game through his son [[Dickon Tarly|Dickon]]. The knights involved had a burgeoning wager on who could claim her maidenhead. Tarly ended their game, but told her the fault lie with herself: "...(These are) honorable men. The blame is yours. Your being here encouraged them...A war host is no place for a maiden."

When Dick Crabb finally arrives, Brienne offers to buy him drinks. Nimble Dick soon launches into his story, egged on by a steady bribe from Brienne, he explains how he had offered to help a frightened fool<ref>Brienne was obviously hoping for the fool to be Ser [[Dontos Hollard]], whom she expected to be with [[Sansa Stark]] at the time; we find out in the next Brienne chapter that it is instead [[Shagwell]] of the [[Brave Companions]]</ref> make it across the [[Narrow Sea]]. The fool claimed he had two girls with him, but couldn't chance the ports in Maidenpool. So Dick had taken his coin and took him and the girls along the shore to an old, now-unused smuggler's cove, up past [[Crackclaw Point]]. Nimble Dick agrees to take her there for a large sum of coin, pointing out that he is from the area, and warns Brienne of the [[Whispers]], a keep built by a mythical ancestor of his, Ser [[Clarence Crabb]].
