The Starks are descended from Brandon the Builder, a lengendary figure from the Age of Heroes thousands of years in the past, who built Winterfell and the [[Wall]]. They were Kings of Winter in the North from the Age of Heroes beginning with Bran the Builder until Torrhen Stark submitted to [[Aegon the Conqueror]] at the end of the [[War of Conquest]]. Since that time the Starks have held the North for the kings of [[Westeros]] as Lords of Winterfell and Wardens of the North.

Shortly after Eddard's death in King's Landing, both Bran and Rickon shared a vision of their father's spirit in the crypts. As the turmoil of Eddard's death shakes his family, Rickon became largely unsupervised as his eldest brother and mother left to war, and his sisters were held captive at King's Landing. Alone with his crippled brother Bran at Winterfell, Rickon developed an unruly, often violent temper. His fear and rage were reflected in his direwolf, Shaggydog, who turned largely feral and attacked several people before being restrained. Several times, Bran's direwolf Summer was forced to fight Shaggydog into submission. Rickon hid with Bran in the crypts during Theon Greyjoy's brief reign at Winterfell. When Winterfell was sacked and burned by Ramsay Bolton, the brothers were separated for their safety. The wildling woman Osha took Rickon and Shaggydog to parts unknown.

[[Jon Snow]] is Eddard's bastard son, who was raised at Winterfell alongside his Stark half-sibilings.

===Benjen===
Benjen Stark is Eddard Stark's younger brother, and the First Ranger of the [[Night's Watch]]. He is Eddard's last surviving sibling.

When King Robert visited the Starks at Winterfell, Benjen was invited back to the castle. At the feast held in honor of the king, Benjen's talk with his nephew Jon Snow ultimately prompted the young bastard boy to join the [[Night's Watch]]. Benjen took Jon north with him after the visit. However, Benjen disappeared while ranging beyond the Wall shortly after he and Jon Snow arrived at Castle Black. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont refused to name a new First Ranger until Benjen was recovered, dead, alive or otherwise, but he has not been seen or heard from since.

Eddard's elder brother, who died before the Usurper's Rebellion. He is described by those who knew him as taller, more handsome, and more passionate than Eddard. He was also an excellent swordsman and jouster.

Brandon was betrothed to Catelyn Tully of Riverrun, but Petyr Baelish, a ward of Catelyn's father, loved Catelyn and challenged Brandon to a duel for her hand. Brandon won their duel, but did not kill him in concession to Catelyn's pleas. Brandon was on his way to Riverrun to wed Catelyn when word reached him of his sister Lyanna's supposed abduction by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Brandon and four companions rode to King's Landing and threatened Rhaegar's life. They were arrested by King [[House Targaryen#Aerys II|Aerys]] and charged with plotting Rhaegar's murder. Their fathers were called to court to answer the charges. Brandon died while trying to save his father from being burned to death by King Aerys.

===Lyanna===
Eddard's only sister, Lyanna died at the end of Robert's Rebellion. She is described by many people who knew her as a spirited young woman and an excellent rider. She was said to exhibit the same Stark coloring as her brother Ned, and was regarded as beautiful.

Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon, who was infatuated with her. Lyanna, however, was not as ardent in her love for Robert, and was fully aware of his philandering ways. However, Prince [[House Targaryen#Rhaegar|Rhaegar Targaryen]] crowned her Queen of Love and Beauty after winning the [[Tourneys in A Song of Ice and Fire#Harrenhal tourney|Harrenhal tourney]], passing over his wife, the Dornish princess Elia, in her favor. The exact nature of her relationship with Rhaegar is not presently clear, but shortly thereafter Rhaegar apparently abducted her. Robert and Brandon Stark believed that Lyanna had been taken against her will. Their anger over the event triggered [[Robert's Rebellion]]. After the sack of King's Landing, Eddard and six companions went to retrieve Lyanna at the building Rhaegar had named the [[Tower of Joy]]. They fought three [[Kingsguard]] knights stationed there, who killed all but Eddard and Howland Reed. Eddard found Lyanna dying in a "bed of blood" and clutching a withered wreath of blue roses. She forced him to make a promise to her, the contents of which are unknown, but which haunted Eddard for the rest of his life. She was sixteen years old at the time of her death.

Hey, I see you've been creating articles for the Targ kings. I think putting the name "Targaryen" in the title is redundant. There aren't any other dynasties with Valyrian names in the book, and general naming conventions call for kings to only go by their first name and their number, such as "Henry VIII" instead of "Henry VIII Tudor". Posted this on the article talk page, but you are the only one doing anything with these house pages, so I think it is prudent to post it here too. The family tree on that page is wrong, though that is understandable because the Estermont thing confused the Hell out of me at first too. Basically, Eldon Estermont is Cassana's brother not her father. Now, I know what you are thinking, AFFC appendix gives us Lord Eldon Estermont, Lord of Greenstone, and that is certainly true, but the crucial missing piece of information that GRRM has not, for some odd reason, deigned to tell us is that old Lord Estermont, first name never given, grandfather to Stannis, died at some point during ASOS or just after. Want some proof? Take a look at the appendix for A Storm of Swords under "The King on the Iron Throne." Part way down the first page you have Ser (as opposed to Lord) Eldon Estermont listed as Joffrey's grandmother's (Cassana's) brother. His son is given as Ser Aemon, so we know we are talking about the same person here. Under "The King in the Narrow Sea," we get Stannis's maternal uncle (Cassana's brother) Ser Lomas Estermont. Any uncle of Stannis is a brother of Joffrey's grandmother, so Lomas and Eldon are both brothers of Cassana and therefore sons of the Lord Estermont that ACOK and ASOS make clear is Stannis's grandfather. What should we do for houses of which little is known? For example [[House Jast]] and [[House Hetherspoon]]. Even with the non-canon info of [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Heraldry/Houses/6/ Westeros] on Coat of Arms and Words there is very little info. I think we should do something because there are a lot of links to them. (See at [[Special:Wantedpages]]). Basically the choice is:
* Make a separate article for each house even thought there is not yet a lot of info
* Gather all little known houses in one article (per region) with a separate headings for each house.
What is your opinion?

'''House Gardener of Highgarden''' is the extinct house of the old and famed Kings of the Reach. Their blazon was a green hand over a white field.

They died out when fighting the [[Targaryens]] the [[Wars of Conquest]]. The last king of the line, Mern IX, joined forces with King Loren Lannister of the Rock and faced [[Aegon I targaryen|Aegon]] and his sisters on the [[Field of Fire]], where he was burned alive with many of his men. His steward, Harlan Tyrell, surrendered Highgarden to Aegon and was named Lord of the Reach in exchange for his submission to the Iron Throne.

The first reference to their rule dates two thousand years before the events described in A Song of Ice and Fire, when they armed the inhabitants of the Shield Islands to protect the Reach from the attacks of the ironborn. That establishes a rule of at least 1700 years.

==Known members==

The best known member of the house is the mythical king of the First Men Garth Greenhand, who according to legend wore a crown of vines and flowers and made the land bloom.

There were at least eleven more Garths on the house, since the money that was found at Rugen's cell at [[King's Landing]] had been minted by Garth XII.

Gyles the Third was a king that went to war against the Storm King, and was attacked by the King of the Rock while he was with his army at the east.

The last member of the line was King Mern IX, who died at the Field of Fire and with all probability had no offspring.

==Descent==

A lot of houses from the Reach can trace their descent back to Garth Greenhand, a fact that is often used to boast of a better claim than the Tyrells on the ovelordship of the Reach (the Tyrells are descendants of the Gardeners only through the female line).

Among the houses with Garth as an ancestor are the Florents, the Rowans, the Oakhearts, and many others. Apparently Garth had many sons himself.

'''House Hoare of Orkmont''' is an extinct house of the [[Iron Islands]]. The Hoares were the High Kings of the islands after the Andal settlers on the Iron Islands ended the rule of [[House Greyiron]].

A [[kingsmoot]] gave to House Hoare the Seastone Chair after the Greyiron line had been extinguished. However, instead to return back to the Old Way when all the kings were chosen in assembly, the Hoares kept the title hereditary as the Greyirons had done.

Under King Qhored Hoare the realm of the ironborn reached the peak of its expansion, and it was said that all the western coast of Westeros were the salt of the sea could be smelt or hear the crashing of waves were under their control. Although it is unlikely that this assertion is literal, since with all probability places like Oldtown or Lannisport have never been ruled from the Iron Island, it is still remarkable that the ironborn could hold places as distant as the Arbor.

During the next years, the power of House Hoare would disminish and many of the conquests would be lost. The Bear Island was lost to Rodrik Stark in a wrestling, who gave it to the Mormonts. The possessions of the ironborn were reduced to the Isles and the coast of the rivelands.

In a new age of expansion, the ironborn took the all the riverlands from the Storm Kings (who had killed the last River King 300 years before). Harren the Black ordered the construction of [[Harrenhal]], the greatest castle of the Seven Kingdoms, at the shores of the Gods Eye long away from the sea. The construction took forty years, and was finished the day Aegon and his sisters landed Westeros. Having seen how Kings Loren and Mern had been defeated at the [[Field of Fire]], he decided to remain at his castle. [[Aegon I Targaryen|Aegon]] burned it with his dragon, burning alive Harren and his sons thus ending the Hoare line.

According to non-canon letters from [[George R. R. Martin]], his banner depicts per saltire and with two heavy silver chains crossing between a gold longship on black, a dark green pine on white, a cluster of red grapes on gold, and a black raven flying in a blue sky (clockwise).
His banner represents all the distant lands that had been under the rule of the house: the longship for the Iron islands, the green pine for the Bear Island (the northenest border of their dominion), the cluster for the Arbor (the southernmost) and the black raven for Raventree Hall on the RIverlands; all bound by the iron chains of the ironmen.

==Known members==

Harrag Hoare is cited by [[Aeron Damphair]] as an example of a great king that was chosen through a kingsmoot. Possibly he was the one chosen after the death of the Greyiron line, but he could also had been a previous King from the same house.

The house reached the peak of its power under King Qhored, but his descendants started to lose possessions.

Harren the Black was the last Hoare king. He was burned alive with his sons at the Kingspyre Tower from Harrenhal.

During the timeline were the events of A Song of Ice and Fire take place, there's a man from the isles named Harren Half-Hoare, whose connection to House Hoare is not referred to. He supported [[Euron Greyjoy]] during the kingsmoot.

'''House Greyiron of Orkmont''' is an exctinct house of the [[Iron Islands]]. The Greyirons were the High Kings of the islands during a thousand years.

For centuries, the High King of the Isles had been chosen between the lords and captains of the Iron Islands in a [[kingsmoot]]. Five hundred thousand years before the events described in [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] Urron Greyiron descended with his axemen among the ironborn assembled on Naga's Bones, murdering all their oponents and proclaiming himself king.

He also made the position hereditary, so at his death the Seastone Chair passed to his heir instead of being chosen. His line ruled during a thousand years until it was extinguished by the [[Andals]] that came to the Iron Islands.

According to non-canon letters from [[George R. R. Martin]], his banner showed the sea king's head, white with dark green seaweed beard and hair, a black crown on a grey field.

==Known members==

The only known member of the house is Urron Redhand, who seized the throne by murdering all the other kings on the kingsmoot.

They died out during fighting the [[Targaryens]] the [[Wars of Conquest]]. The last king of the line, Mern IX, joined forces with King Loren Lannister of the Rock and faced [[Aegon I targaryen|Aegon]] and his sisters on the [[Field of Fire]], were he was burned alive with many of his men. His stweard, Harlan Tyrell, surrendered Highgarden to Aegon and was named Lord of the Reach in exchange of his submission to the Iron Throne.

The first reference to their rule dates two thousand years before the events described in A Song of Ice and Fire, when they armed the inhabitants of the Shield Islands to protect the Reach from the attacks of the ironborn. That establishes a rule of at least one thousand seven hundred years.

==Known members==

The best known member of the house is the mythical king of the First Men Garth Greenhand, who according to legend wore a crown of vines and flowers and made the land bloom.

There were at least eleven more Garths on the house, since the money that was found at Rugen's cell at [[King's Landing]] had been minted by Garth XII.

Gyles the Third was a king that went to war against the Storm King, and was attacked by the King of the Rock while he was with his army at the east.

The last member of the line was King Mern IX, who died at the Field of Fire and with all proability had no offspring.

==Descent==

A lot of houses from the Reach can trace their descent back to Garth Greenhand, a fact that is often used to boast of a better claim than the Tyrells on the ovelrdship of the Reach (The Tyrells are descendants of the Gardeners only through the female line).

Among the houses with Garth as an ancestor there are the Florents, the Rowans, and the Oakhearts, and many others. Apparently Garth had many sons himself.

'''House Darklyn of Duskendale''' is an exctincted house that ruled for centures the village of Duskendale and the surrounding lands. Their keep is the Dun Fort, at the top of the hill that dominates the town.

The Darklyns had been petty kings during the [[Age of Heroes]], and their power reached as far as for trying to get hold of the Cracklaw Point. Later their realm was swallowed by the surrounding larger kingdoms, but the Darklyns remained and served their new kings as the proud Lords of Duskendale.

Their closest allies are their bannermen of House Hollard, who served them loyaly and even provided brides for the Darklyns kings of old thrice.

During the [[Targaryen]] rule, they were close allies to the dragonlords to the point that seven sons of Darklyn had joined the [[Kingsguard]], more than any other house. Those good terms with the [[Iron Throne]] ended with the Defiance of Duskendale.

==The Defiance==

The Defiance of Duskendale took place during the reign of [[King Aerys II]] when, according to the commonfolk convinced by his wife Lady Serala of Myr, Lord Denys Darklyn took Aerys captive.

During the emprisonment of the king, the master-at-arms of the Dun Fort, Ser Symon Hollard, slain Ser Gwayane Gaunt of the Kingsguard. The Hand of the King, [[Lord Tywin Lannister]], assembled an army that could easily storm the town, but Lord Denys menaced that he would kill the king as soon as the attack started. Aerys was held prisoner half a year with Tywin's army waiting outside Duskendale.

The situation remained invariable until [[Ser Barristan Selmy]] of the Kingsguard stormed the Dun Dort and rescued the king. Having lost his hostage Lord Denys had no other option that to surrender at once. He bent the knee and begged for mercy, but the king demanded his head and all his family's. Lord Denys, his rothers and his sister, uncles and cousins were beheaded.
Lady Serala, called the Lace Serpent for the supposed poison of her words, was burned alive after torning out her tongue and her female parts with which it was said that she had enslaved her lord.

House Hollard, that had served House Darklyn during the defiance and had a close relationship with their lords, had the lands taken, the castle torn down, and its members also executed. Only young [[Dontos Hollard]] was spared because Barristan asked for mercy.

==Known members==

Lord Denys, the rebel lord that seized the king and was executed, was the last member of the house.

Before him, the [[White Book]] records seven Darklyn sons that served in the Kingsguard. One of them was Rolland Darklyn, who entered the sworn brothership on a battefield and died an hour later. He was the youngest member ever to serve at the Kingsguard until Jaime Lannister (who was 16 at the time).

==Descent==

The Darklyn line was completely extinguished by Aerys after the Defiance. However, in Duskendale there are many people named Darke, Darkwood or Dargood who probably descend from minor branches of the house.

Upon Theon's return, Asha passed herself off as Esgred, a shipwright's wife, and flirted with him to learn his nature. Theon's naive arrogance amused her, but Theon grew angry at Asha's deception and her position. At a feast that night, Asha took the place of honor beside Balon, making Theon feel cheated. When he confronted her again about her deception, she claimed that she did in fact have a husband, hefting an axe, as well as a suckling babe, retrieving a dagger from between her breasts.

For her part in Balon's invasion, Asha commanded thirty longboats and conquered [[Deepwood Motte]]. She visited Theon after he took [[Winterfell]], but refused to stay and help him defend the castle. She returned to the isles after Balon's death to claim the [[Seastone Chair]]. After his brother [[Euron Greyjoy|Euron]] seduced and bedded his second wife, Victarion killed her to retain his honor and has never married nor forgiven Euron since.

After Balon's death, Victarion made a claim to the [[Seastone Chair]] as Balon's brother and second-in-command. Victarion made a strong claim, but the crowd ultimately favored Euron. Despite his hatred for Euron, Victarion's obedient and dutiful nature kept him following Euron's orders. He lead the assault on the [[Shield Islands]], slaughtering unarmored sailors and winning a duel with a lord's son. After his victory, he watched helplessly as Euron stole many of his trusted comrades away from him by giving them titles on the Shield Islands. He also deplored the cruelty Euron displayed toward the slain lords' women.

Apparently oblivious to Victarion's hatred, Euron summoned Victarion to a private meeting and asked him to find [[Daenerys Targaryen]] and deliver Euron's marriage proposal. Victarion agreed, but secretly planned on courting Daenerys for himself.

Called "Urri". Fourth son of Lord Quellon and his second wife, younger brother of Balon, Euron and Victarion, older brother of Aeron. A favored son and brother, he died at the age of fourteen from an infected wound inflicted by Aeron while playing the Finger Dance. His wound could have been healed, but his stepmother relied on the [[Maesters of the Citadel|maester]]. The maester sewed the hand back on, but infection had set in. Poultices and potions proved ineffectual; by the time the maester amputated the arm, gangrene had set in and Urri died shortly afterward. After Lord Quellon died reaving, Balon returned as King and promptly inflicted the same wound on the maester. He commanded his stepmother to try and heal him.

When her father became the Hand of the King, eleven-year old Sansa was delighted at the prospect of life at court in [[King's Landing]], and thrilled to be betrothed to the handsome Prince [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]. She adored Joffrey in spite of his violent mood swings, and gave false testimony defending him against Arya, which resulted in the death of her own direwolf, Lady. She was dismayed when her father announced plans to send her home and end the betrothal. Still trusting those at the royal court to be noble, she told Queen Cersei of her father's plans to send her away, unknowingly aiding the queen's plot against Eddard. It was only when her father was beheaded at Joffrey's command that Sansa saw Joffrey for what he really was.

She remained betrothed to Joffrey, suffering verbal and physical abuse at his hands and on his orders, until she was set aside in favor of [[Margaery Tyrell]]. No longer certain of whom she could trust, she accepted the promise of the alcoholic knight Ser Dontos Hollard that he would see her sent safely home, seeing him as a gallant rescuer. Sansa remained courteous to everyone she met, including Joffrey's bodyguard [[Sandor Clegane]], who was by turns brusque and gentle with her, and the [[House Tyrell|Tyrells]], who were planning to have her marry their heir Willas Tyrell.

After revealing the Tyrell plan to Ser Dontos (who told his master Petyr Baelish, who in turn told the Lannisters), Sansa was instead forced to marry the king's uncle, the dwarf [[Tyrion Lannister]]. Dismayed by her new husband's hideous appearance and horrified by the deaths of her siblings and parents, a now thirteen-year old Sansa nonetheless hid her feelings and tried to be the ideal wife she had been trained to be, though her disgust at the thought of sex with her husband was clear and he never forced her to consummate the marriage.

Sansa ultimately escaped King's Landing on the day of Joffrey's wedding during the chaos caused by Joffrey's poisoning and death. Believing Ser Dontos to be her savior, she was yet again disillusioned when she learned that he was working for payment, from [[Petyr Baelish]]. Baelish took her by ship to the Eyrie, which was ruled by Sansa's aunt, [[Lysa Arryn]], whom Baelish then married. Sansa was instructed to pretend she was Baelish's bastard daughter, Alayne Stone, as the queen was searching for her. She again tried to fit in, playing with her young cousin [[Robert Arryn]], but Baelish was attracted to Sansa and kissed her, not knowing that his wife was watching. He murdered his wife after she demonstrated her instability and threatened Sansa.

While at the Eyrie, Sansa pretended to be Baelish's bastard daughter, taking the name and persona of 'Alayne Stone' so thoroughly that she no longer thought of herself as Sansa. After Lysa's death Alayne became the mistress of the Eyrie, demonstrating again her aptness for household duties, and learned something of courtly intrigues from Baelish. He also planned for her marriage to [[Harrold Hardyng]], the heir to [[House Arryn]], and the eventual revelation of her true identity and the reclaiming of Winterfell in her name.

==History==
When her father became the Hand of the King, eleven-year old Sansa was delighted at the prospect of life at court in [[King's Landing]], and thrilled to be betrothed to the handsome Prince [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]. She adored Joffrey in spite of his violent mood swings, and gave false testimony defending him against Arya, which resulted in the death of her own direwolf, Lady. She was dismayed when her father announced plans to send her home and end the betrothal. Still trusting those at the royal court to be noble, she told Queen Cersei of her father's plans to send her away, unknowingly aiding the queen's plot against Eddard. It was only when her father was beheaded at Joffrey's command that Sansa saw Joffrey for what he really was.

She remained betrothed to Joffrey, suffering verbal and physical abuse at his hands and on his orders, until she was set aside in favor of [[Margaery Tyrell]]. No longer certain whom she could trust, she accepted the promise of the alcoholic knight Ser Dontos Hollard that he would see her sent safely home, seeing him as a gallant rescuer. Sansa remained courteous to everyone she met, including Joffrey's bodyguard [[Sandor Clegane]], who was by turns brusque and gentle with her, and the [[House Tyrell|Tyrells]], who were planning to have her marry their heir Willas Tyrell.

After revealing the Tyrell plan to Ser Dontos (who told his master Petyr Baelish, who in turn told the Lannisters), Sansa was instead forced to marry the king's uncle, the dwarf [[Tyrion Lannister]]. Dismayed by her new husband's hideous appearance and horrified by the deaths of her siblings and parents, a now thirteen-year old Sansa nonetheless hid her feelings and tried to be the ideal wife she had been trained to be, though her disgust at the thought of sex with her husband was so great that he never forced her to consummate the marriage.

Sansa ultimately escaped King's Landing on the day of Joffrey's wedding during the chaos caused by Joffrey's poisoning and death. Believing Ser Dontos to be her savior, she was yet again disillusioned when she learned that he was working for payment, from [[Petyr Baelish]]. Baelish took her by ship to the Eyrie, which was ruled by Sansa's aunt, [[Lysa Arryn]], whom Baelish then married. Sansa was instructed to pretend she was Baelish's bastard daughter, as the queen was searching for her. She again tried to fit in, playing with her young cousin [[Robert Arryn]], but Baelish was attracted to Sansa and kissed her, not knowing that his wife was watching. He murdered his wife after she demonstrated her instability and threatened Sansa.

While at the Eyrie, Sansa pretended to be Baelish's bastard daughter, taking the name and persona of 'Alayne Stone' so thoroughly that she no longer thought of herself as Sansa. After Lysa's death Alayne became the mistress of the Eyrie, demonstrating again her aptness for household duties, and learned something of courtly intrigues from Baelish. He also planned for her marriage to [[Harrold Hardyng]], the heir to [[House Arryn]], and the eventual revelation of her true identity and the reclaiming of Winterfell in her name.

The '''Red Wedding''' was a massacre that killed [[Robb Stark]], [[Catelyn Stark]], many of their bannermen, and the majority of their military forces during the [[War of the Five Kings]]. The massacre was masterminded by [[Tywin Lannister]], [[Lord Walder Frey|Walder Frey]], and [[Roose Bolton]]. It was carried out at the [[Twins]] by Frey and Bolton men during the wedding feast of [[Edmure Tully]].

During the [[War of the Five Kings]], the [[House Frey|Freys]] rose in rebellion against the Iron Throne for the King in the North. The rebellion was contingent on a Frey's betrothal to Robb Stark. However, after Robb Stark broke his betrothal to a Frey for a Westerling, [[Lord Walder Frey]] plotted his revenge for the slight. Lord Frey arranged another marriage between Edmure Tully and his daughter Roslin Frey. Conspiring with Roose Bolton and Tywin Lannister, Lord Frey smuggled in a host of sellswords and knights disguised as musicians. During the wedding feast, the "musicians" began to kill the household and supporters of the King in the North, including his mother, Catelyn Stark, and took Edmure Tully captive.

The Twins are the two heavily fortified castles of [[House Frey]]. They are identical and each stands on a margin of the Green Fork river. A stone bridge arches between them. This bridge is wide enough for two wagons to cross abreast and guarded by a tower in the middle known as the Water Tower. The Twins have been the seat of [[House Frey]] for over six hundred years and they have grown wealthy by charging a heavy toll on all those who need to cross, as it is the only place to do so within several days travel. As the Freys are both wealthy and numerous, they are one of the most powerful houses sworn to [[House Tully]], able to raise four thousand men-at-arms.

During the [[War of the Five Kings]], the Twins were the stage for the event known as the [[Red Wedding]].

==Geography==
The nine city-states composing the Free Cities lie [[Across the Narrow Sea]], east of [[Westeros]], on the western side of the eastern continent, mostly on islands or along the coast. There are significant differences between the geography of the various cities, from the thick forests between Norvos and Qohor, to the rolling hills of Pentos, to the tiny islands of Braavos. Mountains to the east separate the coast from the plains of the [[Dothraki Sea]], though gaps in the mountain range provide the Dothraki people some access to the Free Cities. To the north are the Shivering Sea and [[Ibben]], an island inhabited by sealskin-clad whalers. To the south are [[Slaver's Bay]] and a series of straits leading to the Jade Sea in the far east.

Lys is well known for its pleasure houses, training slaves in the arts of love and selling them as concubines and bed-slaves. Lys also frequently fights over control of the [[Stepstones]] and the [[Disputed Lands]]. There appears to be a love goddess whose worship is peculiar to Lys.

Qohor's city guard has comprised solely of [[Unsullied]] eunuch slave soldiers ever since the Battle of the Three Thousand, when 3,000 Unsullied guardsmen successfully defended the city against over 25,000 [[Dothraki]] horsemen. Guardsmen tie braids of human hair to their spears to commemorate the Dothraki cutting their braids in salute to Qohor's defenders.

The city has three large bells, each with its own name and distinctive voice, that are rung frequently. The surrounding area is a land of rolling hills, terraced farms, and white-stucco villages. The climate is fairly mild. Norvosi can be recognized by their dyed and upswept mustaches. The city is run by a council of magisters that are known to pay tribute to passing Dothraki khalasars. It is also home to a group of [[The bearded priests of Norvos|bearded priests]] that train elite guardsmen. These guardsmen swear oaths of duty and consider themselves wedded to their distinctive long axes.

Myr is a hub of trade in both slaves and their signature green nectar wines. Myr frequently fights over control of the [[Disputed Lands]].

*Taena Merryweather, a sultry beauty married to Lord Orton Merryweather. She claims to have powerful friends in the Free Cities and is a friend and confidant to [[Cersei Lannister]]. She possesses a [[Myrish Swamp]].

*[[Thoros of Myr]], a priest of [[R'hllor]] and a founding member of the [[Brotherhood Without Banners]].

===Tyrosh===
A coastal city-state ruled by an Archon, Tyrosh is infamous for its avarice.  Traders deal extensively in slaves and Tyroshi pear brandy. The city features an abundance of pleasure houses, but they are not as highly regarded as those in Lys. Tyroshi master armorsmiths make intricate armor in fantastic shapes. Tyrosh is a popular center for the hiring of sellswords. The city is often drawn into the ongoing conflicts over the [[Disputed Lands]] and the [[Stepstones]]. The Tyroshi often wear forked beards and pointed mustaches dyed in bright colors.

At the start of the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]], the Band of Nine conquered Tyrosh and put Alequo Adarys the Goldentongued into power. Six years after the Band was crushed at the Stepstones, Alequo was deposed.

===Volantis===

Volantis is sometimes drawn into conflicts over the [[Disputed Lands]].

Lorath is a port city on a group of islands. [[Jaqen H'ghar]] posed as a Lorathi for a time, wearing long hair dyed red on one side and white on the other.

She was regarded as a good and gracious woman, although of delicate health. She was present at the Tourney of Harrenhal when her husband selected [[House Stark#Lyanna|Lyanna Stark]] as the Queen of Love and Beauty, although her reaction to what was regarded as an insult to her is unknown.

During Robert's Rebellion, Elia and her children were confined in the Red Keep by [[House Targaryen#Aerys II|King Aerys II]] as hostages against the obedience of Dorne. When Kings Landing was sacked, and the Red Keep captured, Elia was raped and murdered during the [[War of the Usurper#Sack of King's Landing|sack of King's Landing]] by Ser [[Characters from A Song of Ice and Fire#Gregor Clegane|Gregor Clegane]], and her children were murdered by [[retainer|retainers]] sworn to Casterly Rock.

Princess Mellario Martell is Doran's wife. While traveling in the [[Free Cities]], Doran met and fell in love with her for her beautiful dark skin. Areo Hotah, Sunspear's captain of the guards, originally accompanied her from her native city as her sworn protector. She was angered when Doran sent Quentyn away to Yronwood to be fostered. Unfamiliar with the foreign custom, she saw it as a "selling of flesh", causing a rift between Mellario and her husband. She has since returned to her family in the city of [[Free Cities#Norvos|Norvos]].

Quentyn Martell is the elder son of Doran Martell, but not his heir owing to Dornish law. Quentyn was fostered as the ward and squire of Lord Anders Yronwood to make peace with the house, after the previous Lord Yronwood died from poisoned wounds taken in a duel to first blood with Oberyn.

Quentyn is a new POV character introduced in ''[[A Dance with Dragons]]''. He has been sent on a journey to the East by Doran to bring back his family's "heart's desire." Doran has not disclosed what that desire is, but refers to it as "vengeance," "justice" and "fire and blood." It has yet to be revealed exactly what Doran intends Quentyn to do, but it is worth noting that "Fire and Blood" are the house words of [[House Targaryen]], and that the ''cyvasse'' piece he held was a dragon. This would imply that Prince Quentyn's quest would possibly be to retrieve [[Daenerys Targaryen]], the last scion of House Targaryen and the self-proclaimed Queen of Westeros.

Trystane Martell is the younger son and third child of Doran and Mellario. He is dark in coloring, with shiny black hair.

A wildling is, by definition, any person that lives north of the [[Wall]], although they refer to themselves as the Free Folk. These people are viewed as barbarians by those south of the Wall, people viewed by the wildlings as weak and soft. There are tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of wildlings split into hundreds of tribes, clans, villages and raiding parties. Some, such as the Thenn, live in tightly knit communities while others are seminomadic loners, held down only by their own needs. While there is often conflict between the wildlings and the "crows" of the [[Night's Watch]], the two groups are not beyond some form of cooperation, as lost Brothers have been aided by wildlings and the Watch is not beyond taking wildling children and raising them to be Brothers of the Watch. In recent times, there was a lot of activity north of the wall as a wildling-born deserter of the Brotherhood, Mance Rayder, gathered wildling forces around him. His party attacked the Wall but was defeated by the Night's Watch and [[Stannis Baratheon]]'s army.

*Varamyr "Sixskins", a diminutive skinchanger who is accompanied by three wolves, a snowbear and a shadowcat. After Orell's death, Varamyr took control of his eagle and used it to scout during the battle of Castle Black. Melisandre killed the eagle while Varamyr inhabited it, causing him to go mad.

The '''Wall''' is a massive wall of ice that stretches across the northern border of the [[Seven Kingdoms]], separating it from the wild lands beyond. It extends from the Frostfangs mountain range in the west to the Bay of Seals in the east. It was reputedly created over 8,000 years prior to the present setting by [[Brandon the Builder]] after the [[Long Night]] to defend the realms of man from the [[wildlings]] and [[Others]]. Approximately 300 leagues in length and 700 feet in height, the Wall is protected by the [[Night's Watch]]. Several mentions in the text suggest that the Wall was much smaller at the time, having been built upon by the Night's Watch over the centuries to its present size. However, the severely reduced Night's Watch at the time of the books is limited to maintenance duty. A total of nineteen fortresses have been built along the Wall though only three, The Shadow Tower, Castle Black and Eastwatch-by-the-sea are occupied at the times of the books.

==History==
The Night's Watch mans the [[Wall]], a huge fortification built primarily of ice located in the far north of [[Westeros]]. The Wall is 300 miles long (100 leagues) and over 700 feet high. It extends from the Frostfangs mountain range in the west to the Bay of Seals in the east. According to Westerosi legend, it was built after the period known as the [[Long Night]] by the nearly mythical Brandon the Builder over 8,000 years prior to the present setting. The Wall was constructed after The Long Night in an attempt to forever shut out the inhabitants of the far north, who had overrun Westeros during that period, before being turned back by unknown forces. Several mentions in the text suggest that the Wall was much smaller at the time, having been built upon by the Night's Watch over the centuries to its present size. However, the severely reduced Night's Watch at the time of the books is limited to maintenance duty. The greatest antagonist to the Watch has been the [[Others]], a race of mystical creatures not seen for thousands of years.

For the vast majority of the Watch's recent history, they have served as a practical penal colony, filled with petty and violent criminals, political exiles, and vanquished nobility. Although their numbers are dwindling and the title of Brother of the Night's Watch no longer holds the honor and prestige it once did, the core of the Watch is still composed of capable and dedicated men. These men now serve the Watch and the Realm of Men by helping ensure that the barbaric human settlers of the areas north of the Wall, known as wildlings, are not allowed to raid south of the Wall, which has been their ancient task all but forgotten by time and practical, modern concerns.

====Castles of the Night's Watch====
The Night's Watch maintains nineteen castles along the Wall. In reality they are mostly barracks, stables, storehouses, towers and out-buildings as they have no walls and cannot be considered "true" castles. They were purposefully built in this fashion so the Watch could man the Wall itself and defend against threats from the north but be unable to repel attacks from the south should the Watch ever raise in rebellion. Presently, due to manpower shortages, the Watch only mans the Shadow Tower, Castle Black and Eastwatch although there are plans to regarrison the Nightfort. The question of who will be responsible for this is a point of tension between the Lord Commander of the Watch and King [[Stannis Baratheon]].

==== The 'Gift' and the 'New Gift' ====
"The Gift" is a tract of land measuring twenty-five leagues southward from the Wall that the Night's Watch received from long-dead King Brandon [[House Stark|Stark]] of the North. For years, the Watch farmed the Gift but as the organization dwindled there were fewer hands to plow the fields, tend the bees, and plant the orchards, so the wild reclaimed much of the area. Wishing to restore the Night's Watch and reward its loyal service in defence of the realm, Queen Alysanne, wife of King Jaehaerys the Conciliator, doubled the extent of the Gift. Towns and villages that were located within the "New Gift" supported the Night's Watch by their taxes, rendered by goods and labor. In time, the New Gift lost population as people moved south, further reducing the support structure for the Night's Watch and the Wall.

The nearest point of civilization to the Wall is Mole's Town, a subterranean settlement whose brothel is frequently patronized by brothers of the Night's Watch.

==Culture==
A man of the Night's Watch serves for life. If he has come voluntarily, he is free to leave the Wall at any time in his training, but if he is at the Wall as a criminal punishment or exile, or after he has taken his vow (which includes a promise not to take a wife or father children), desertion is punishable by death. As already noted some of the men are highborn nobles and knights, but most are criminals: being sent to the Wall is a standard punishment in lieu of execution for serious crimes throughout Westeros. The highborn of the North have traditionally considered it an honor to serve on the Wall; many younger sons of northern families, who are not in line to inherit land, will take the vow. Many of the high-born southerners that serve were sent because they fought on the wrong side of a war or fell afoul of political machinations. Men of the Night's Watch are garbed all in black, a tradition that earned them the nickname "crows". While some use this name derogatorily, many in the Night's Watch have adopted the term for their own use. They are also called "the black brothers".

Life on the Wall is a hard one and ends only in death. As the ranks of the Watch dwindle, fewer of the brothers are nobility or knighted men and a larger number are pulled from prisons. The majority of the officers and leadership of the Watch pulls its men from the upper crust of Westerosi society. A aristocratic or knighted man is almost guaranteed a position as an officer in the Watch but there are several powerful and influential brothers that are of common blood such as the senior rangers Qhorin the Half-Hand and Blane and Cotter Pyke, commander of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and a bastard-born pirate. The watch, as a meritocracy, is one of the few places in feudal Westeros where a common man can rise high and even gain command over knights and Lords rising as far as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

The oath of the Night's Watch is as follows: ''Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.''

It is strongly suggested by the author that the Lord Commander is usually a ranger. This may be gainsaid by a passage in ''[[A Game of Thrones]]'' in which Jon Snow is appointed a steward and not, to his disappointment, a ranger, and assigned as the personal steward of the current Lord Commander. His peers take it for granted that this means Snow is being groomed for leadership. A combination of these two theories may indicate a "fast track", on which suitable candidates for the Lordship Commander may be placed, giving them experience in each of three disciplines, regardless of in which they are initially placed. Ultimately, though, as detailed elsewhere, the position of Lord Commander is filled by an election, so no-one, even fast-tracked, can be guaranteed it.
