The '''Hand of the King''' is the king's chief advisor and executor of his command in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. Duties of the Hand include commanding the king's armies, drafting laws, dispensing justice, and generally managing the day-to-day running of the kingdom. The Hand may act on the king's behalf when he is indisposed, and sit the [[Iron Throne]] while doing so. The Hand also sits on the [[small council]] and will run the council if the king is not present.

The office typically makes the Hand the second most powerful man in the kingdom next to the king, though some Hands had the reputation of ruling their kings. It is considered by some to be a difficult and unglamorous job of great responsibility. Among the mercenaries he used the name Ser Greenguts in order to hide his real name. The alias came after he was sick most of the time on the ship when Quentyn and his companions travelled to Volantis. In Meereen Daenerys summons him with Quentyn and Gerris. The Dornishmen present themselves and the Prince uncovers their reason to be there. Gerris blames everything that has happened on Daenerys but Yronwood manages to calm him down and tells Ser Barristan what exactly happened when they tried to capture the dragons and also that Quentyn promised [[Pentos]] to the Tattered Prince for his help in the plan. The old knight sees opportunity and offers them a ship to Dorne and Quentyn's bones if they deliver a massage to the Windblown leader. He wants the Dornmishmen to tell the Tattered Prince that he will be given Pentos if he helps freeing the Meereen prisoners in Yunkai. While Ser Jaime besieged Riverrun, Edmure's nephew, [[Robb Stark]], arrived at Riverrun with his Northern host. Robb surprised and destroyed the Lannister army and Edmure was rescued.<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 69|Chapter 69]], Tyrion</ref> After the news of the execution of [[Eddard Stark]] the Northern lords proclaimed Robb Stark King of the North and the Riverland lords, lead by Edmure, proclaimed Robb King of the Riverlands and swore him fealty.

Edmure succeeded his father as Lord of Riverrun when Lord Hoster died. He sheltered the common people in Riverrun when [[Tywin Lannister]] attacked although this meant his supplies were drastically reduced. In disregard of the orders he had received from Robb, Edmure defended the crossing against the Lannisters. He managed to hold them but by doing so he unwittingly thwarted the plans of Robb, who had planned to allow Tywin to cross the river and then trap him between his and Edmure's army.

To make amends for his actions, Edmure offered to marry a daughter of [[Lord Walder Frey]]. Edmure had thought that Walder would offer him an ugly or half-witted girl just to spite him and Robb, but the girl chosen for him, [[Roslin Frey|Roslin]], turned out to be beautiful. Shortly after Edmure and Roslin left to consummate the marriage, the Freys and Boltons attacked the guests. When Edmure awoke his sister, [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] and her son, (his overlord) Robb, had been murdered with numerous others and he was prisoner of his father-in-law.

==Captivity==
With Edmure as their prisoner the Freys besieged Riverrun, which had refused to surrender. It was being held by Edmure's uncle Ser [[Brynden Tully]]. In an attempt to coerce Ser Brynden, [[Ryman Frey]] set up a gallows and threatened to hang Edmure if Riverrun did not surrender. Every day Edmure was made to stand at the gallows but Brynden refused to surrender and Ryman did not live up to his threats. The siege continued without any major event until Ser Jaime Lannister arrived to take over command of the siege.

Ser Jaime sent Ryman back to the [[Twins]] and took Edmure as his own prisoner. He released him and offered Edmure a deal. As lord of Riverrun Edmure was his uncle's liege lord. If he surrendered Riverrun the defenders would be free to go (without their weapons) and Edmure himself would become comfortable prisoner at [[Casterly Rock]]. His wife, who was pregnant, would in the future be allowed to live with him and for their child a small keep would be found. If Edmure would not agree to this deal, Jaime would make the Riverlords, former vassals of Edmure who had bent the knee, attack Riverrun, destroy the castle and kill the surviving defenders. If Edmure and Roslin's child would be born, Jaime would send the child to him in a catapult.<ref>[[A Feast for Crows]], [[A Feast for Crows-Chapter 33|Chapter 33]], Jaime</ref>

Ser Jared drew his sword and was close to attacking Davos till Wyman Manderly said he would have no bloodshed in Mermans court. Wyman knew Ser Jared was lying but since the [[Iron Throne]] held his heir he pretended to believe the lie and pretended to order Davos death and had a criminal with similar features executed and his head dipped in tar so the Freys falsely believed Davos dead. As a reward for proving his loyalty the Iron throne returned Wymans heir [[Wylis Manderly]] to him.

According to [[Wyman Manderly]], Rhaegar, Jared and Symond were given palfreys as "guest gifts" (Guest gifts are usually given when a guest leaves making them no longer under the protection of Guest right) when the three Freys departed [[White Harbour]].
Wyman claimed they were all to meet at [[Winterfell]] for the wedding of "[[Arya Stark]]" to [[Ramsay Bolton]]. They were not seen since though [[Aenys Frey]] and [[Hosteen Frey]] who were present at [[Winterfell]] suspect Wyman Manderly of foul play.
