An '''ice dragon''' is a species of [[dragon]] that exists in [[Westeros]]i fairytales. [[Old Nan]] used to tell tales of the ice dragon. Whether ice dragons did actually exist in the [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] world at one time is unknown.

There is no mention of the [[Valyrian]]s taming ice dragons although they did tame fire breathing [[dragons]].

Ice dragons may have never existed except in the fairytales. There is a [[Ice Dragon (constellation)|constellation of stars]] named the ice dragon to the north. Its blue eye points north. <ref>[[The Sworn Sword]]</ref>

==Daeron Targaryen's Dreams==
Prince [[Daeron Targaryen]] is one of the characters in [[The Hedge Knight]], the first and earliest of the [[Dunk and Egg]] tales.

Living about ninety years before the events of [[A Game of Thrones]], the Prince claimed to have prophetic dreams that consistently became true. Those dreams include foresights about the events resulting from the [[Trial of Seven]] after the [[Ashford Tourney]] that seem to have been completely fulfilled during ''The Hedge Knight''.{{Ref|THK}}

Daeron also prophesied that the dragons would someday return, which was confirmed by an independent prediction found by King [[Aerys I Targaryen|Aerys I]].{{Ref|TMK|''Warriors 1'', ISBN 978-0-7653-6026-7, page 282 of 251-394}}

==John the Fiddler's Dreams==
Similarly, the third Dunk and Egg tale, [[The Mystery Knight]], features [[Daemon II Blackfyre|Ser John the Fiddler]], who likewise has prophetic dreams that he claims to be completely reliable; his behavior makes it apparent that he fully believes his claims, but ultimately his dreams end up being very symbolic, much like Daeron's. [[Bran Stark|Bran]] begins to experience prescient dreams after his fall. His spiritual guide is a [[three-eyed crow]]. (These dreams appear to be the green dreams of a [[greenseer]].)

This shows Eddard distraught over [[Robert Baratheon|King Robert I]]'s decision to send an assassin after [[Daenerys Targaryen]].{{ref|aGoT|33}} [[Sansa Stark|Lady Sansa]] and [[Arya Stark|Arya]] are depicted in their reactions to the deaths of [[Lady (direwolf)|Lady]] and [[Mycah]].{{ref|aGoT|20}} The shadow with the face of a hound is [[Sandor Clegane]]. The one who was armoured like the sun is possibly Jaime Lannister, with his gilded armour{{ref|aGoT|30}}, but also possibly Oberyn Martell, whose armour made up of copper. {{ref|aSoS|70}}. The giant in armour made of stone is likely [[Robert Strong]], seeing as the poisons used by Oberyn Martell blackened and thickened [[Gregor Clegane]]'s blood.{{ref|aFfC|7}}

==Daenerys==
[[Daenerys Targaryen]]'s first known experience with a prophetic dream happens a few days before her wedding to [[Khal Drogo]]. The dream starts off with [[Viserys Targaryen]] hitting her, but quickly turns prophetic as she witnesses the hatching of a dragon.

Later, when she was pregnant with her child from [[Khal Drogo]], the ''[[dosh khaleen]]'' crones predicted her to be the eventual mother of the [[Stallion Who Mounts the World]].{{Ref|aGoT|46}}

Upon the stillbirth of her child, [[Mirri Maz Duur]] advised her that Drogo will return from his apallic state.

===House of the Undying===
Daenerys herself would eventually prophesy herself when she entered the [[House of the Undying]]. While apparently legitimate, including omens of the [[Red Wedding]], those visions were fairly cryptic, on the whole. Also, since the [[Undying Ones]] were hostile towards her, it is conceivable that parts of the visions were adulterated.{{Ref|aCoK|48}}

"Farther on she came upon a feast of corpses. Savagely slaughtered, the feasters lay strewn across overturned chairs and hacked trestle tables, asprawl in pools of congealing blood. Some had lost limbs, even heads. Savaged limbs clutched bloody cups, wooden spoons, roast fowl, heels of bread. On a throne above them sat a dead man with the head of a wolf. He wore an iron crown and held a leg of lamb in one hand as a king might hold a sceptre, and his eyes followed Dany with mute appeal."

She also sees a man ([[Rhaegar Targaryen]]) and overhears him talking to a woman nursing a baby ([[Elia Martell]]). "Aegon…What better name for a king…He is the prince that was promised, and his is [[The Song of Ice and Fire|the song of ice and fire]]"; and when Rhaegar's eyes meet Dany’s, he says either to her or Elia, "There must be one more…The dragon has three heads", and he picks up a silver harp and begins to play.

===Quaithe===
[[Quaithe]] has also made prophecies to Daenerys, in two separate occasions. The first time was essentially a demand (so far unattended) for her to go to [[Asshai]]{{Ref|aCoK|40}}, while the second was a remarkably accurate warning of the dangers she would come to face in the near future. This second prophecy seems however to have involved a vision of Quaithe as opposed to her own person, and may be originated in Daenerys herself.{{Ref|aDwD|11}}

==Jojen Reed==
[[Jojen Reed]] has prophetic green dreams, and maintains that his visions ''always'' come true. So far he has not been proven wrong, although some of his visions are loaded with significant symbolism and usually poor on specific details. For instance, his dream about the Frey cousins in Winterfell used a meal as a symbol for the news about their family.{{Ref|aCoK|28}}{{Ref|aCoK|35}}{{Ref|aCoK|46}}

==The Ghost of High Heart==
A mysterious dwarf woman who often tells of the future to the [[Brotherhood Without Banners]]. She has shown knowledge of the deaths of [[Renly Baratheon]], [[Balon Greyjoy]] and [[Catelyn Tully]], and even of the coming of Lady Stoneheart.{{Ref|aSoS|22}}
"I dreamt a wolf howling in the rain, but no one heard his grief," the dwarf woman was saying. "I dreamt such a clangor I thought my head might burst, drums and horns and pipes and screams, but the saddest sound was the little bells." - the Red wedding.

==Maggy's prophecies==
In [[A Feast for Crows]] we learn that in 276 AL, during [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys II]]'s visit to the Westerlands, [[Cersei]] and [[Melara Hetherspoon]] consulted with seer [[Maggy|Maggy the Frog]] about their futures. [[Jeyne Farman]] was with them but fled scared before actually hearing any predictions. Much to Melara's surprise, she learned that instead of someday marrying [[Jaime Lannister]] she was fated to die soon - in fact, as it turned out, that very night. The predictions about Cersei, made just moments previous, were more detailed. To Cersei's confusion, she is told her husband will have 16 children and she will have 3, the identity of her future husband and eventual fates of her children. The prophesies contribute to her growing madness. The queen that would take her place, she supposes, is Margaery, and this haunts her to do depraved things.{{Ref|aFfC|12}}{{Ref|aFfC|24}}{{Ref|aFfC|36}}

==Melisandre==
[[Melisandre]] has a capability of future-telling, she says by watching flames. The accuracy is unclear, in part because Melisandre herself seems to misrepresent her precognitions as if they were active sorceries{{Ref|aSoS|36}}{{Ref|aSoS|54}}{{Ref|aSoS|63}}, as well as the reverse.{{Ref|aCoK|33}}{{Ref|aCoK|42}}

In any case, while impressive,{{Ref|aSoS|25}} her future-telling capabilities are not supreme; Davos manages to take [[Edric Storm]] away from [[Dragonstone]] without her knowledge and against her will, for instance.{{Ref|aSoS|63}} Melisandre is also duped by [[Jon Snow]]’s switching of [[wildling prince|Mace and Dalla’s son]] with [[the abomination|Gilly’s son]] thereby allowing the wildling prince to escape [[Melisandre]]’s clutches. And, based on news of Ramsay Bolton's wedding to Arya, she interprets [[Alys Karstark]]'s flight to the wall as [[Arya Stark]]'s flight, telling [[Jon Snow]] his sister is coming from a loveless marriage. While she is right about the marriage, she has the wrong girl. [[Alys Karstark]] arrives at the Wall to speak with Jon after fleeing her cousin [[Cregan Karstark]].

===Azor Ahai===
According to prophesy, in ancient books of [[Asshai]] from over 5,000 years ago, [[Azor Ahai]] is to be reborn again to challenge the re-emergence of the [[Others]]. This will occur after a long summer when an evil, cold darkness descends upon the world.{{Ref|aCoK|10}} It is said that Azor Ahai wielding [[Lightbringer]] once again, will stand against the Others and if he fails, the world fails with him.

She has interpreted this to mean that [[Stannis Baratheon]] is Azor Ahai and gave him a flaming sword.

This seems to show that [[Jon Snow]] rather than [[Stannis Baratheon]] is Azor Ahai, though she can not get this interpretation.

==Jon Snow==

It’s black inside, and I can see the steps spiraling down. Somehow I know I have to go down there, but I don’t want to. I’m afraid of what might be waiting for me. The old Kings of Winter are down there, sitting on their thrones with stone wolves at their feet and iron swords across their laps, but it’s not them I’m afraid of. I scream that I’m not a Stark, that this isn’t my place, but it’s no good, I have to go anyway, so I start down, feeling the walls as I descend, with no torch to light the way. It gets darker and darker, until I want to scream.”{{ref|agot|26}}}}

The call came from behind him, softer than a whisper, but strong too. Can a shout be silent? He turned his head, searching for his brother, for a glimpse of a lean grey shape moving beneath the trees, but there was nothing, only ...

A [[weirwood]].

It seemed to sprout from solid rock, its pale roots twisting up from a myriad of fissures and hairline cracks. The tree was slender compared to other weirwoods he had seen, no more than a sapling, yet it was growing as he watched, its limbs thickening as they reached for the sky. Wary, he circled the smooth white trunk until he came to the face. Red eyes looked at him. Fierce eyes they were, yet glad to see him. The weirwood had his [[Bran|brother’s]] face. Had his brother always had three eyes? Not always, came the silent shout. Not before [[three-eyed crow|the crow]]. He sniffed at the bark, smelled wolf and tree and boy, but behind that there were other scents, the rich brown smell of warm earth and the hard grey smell of stone and something else, something terrible. Death, he knew. He was smelling death. He cringed back, his hair bristling, and bared his fangs.

''Don’t be afraid, I like it in the dark. No one can see you, but you can see them. But first you have to open your eyes. See? Like this.'' And the tree reached down and touched him.

And suddenly he was back in the mountains, his paws sunk deep in a drift of snow as he stood upon the edge of a great precipice. Before him the [[Skirling Pass]] opened up into airy emptiness, and a long vee-shaped valley lay spread beneath him like a quilt, awash in all the colors of an autumn afternoon. A vast blue-white wall plugged one end of the vale, squeezing between the mountains as if it had shouldered them aside… Then he realized he was looking at a river of ice several thousand feet high. Under that glittering cold cliff was a great lake, its deep cobalt waters reflecting the snowcapped peaks that ringed it. There were men down in the valley, he saw now; many men, thousands, a huge host. Some were tearing great holes in the half-frozen ground, while others trained for war. He watched as a swarming mass of riders charged a shield wall, astride horses no larger than ants. The sound of their mock battle was a rustling of steel leaves, drifting faintly on the wind. Their encampment had no plan to it; he saw no ditches, no sharpened stakes, no neat rows of horse lines. Everywhere crude earthen shelters and hide tents sprouted haphazardly, like a pox on the face of the earth. He spied untidy mounds of hay, smelled goats and sheep, horses and pigs, dogs in great profusion. Tendrils of dark smoke rose from a thousand cookfires. This is no army, no more than it is a town. This is a whole people come together. Across the long lake, one of the mounds moved. He watched it more closely and saw that it was not dirt at all, but alive, a shaggy lumbering beast with a snake for a nose and tusks larger than those of the greatest boar that had ever lived. And the thing riding it was huge as well, and his shape was wrong, too thick in the leg and hips to be a man. Then a sudden gust of cold made his fur stand up, and the air thrilled to the sound of wings. As he lifted his eyes to the ice-white mountain heights above, a shadow plummeted out of the sky. A shrill scream split the air. He glimpsed blue-grey pinions spread wide, shutting out the sun …

This foretells that Tyrion will play an important role in the future involving [[dragons]] and [[House Targaryen| the Targaryens]]. The old dragons may refer to [[Bloodraven]], the young dragons may be [[Daenerys Targaryen]]'s dragons, Daenerys, or [[Aegon Targaryen|Aegon]]. The true dragon may be Daenerys and the false dragon would be Aegon if as believed by other prophecy he is not who he claims to be.

This vision of the one eyed [[kraken]] on a bloody sea shows that [[Euron Greyjoy]] will have an important part to play in the future.

The [[fool]] [[Patchface]] recites cryptic jingles that often have prophetic meaning.

This seems to predict [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] at [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]'s wedding to [[Margaery Tyrell]]. On the day of the wedding, Sansa wore a gown of silvery satin, and had a delicate silver net with dark purple gemstones in her hair.{{ref|asos|60}} The "nennymoans" that Patchface refers to seems to be a corruption of "anemone", which is a purple flower. Sea anemones, which are named after the flower, are poisonous water-dwelling animals.

[[Jaime]] has the first of his dreams asleep on a weirwood stump after he has left [[Harrenhall]] which causes him to return in order to rescue Brienne: {{Quote|Naked and alone he stood, surrounded by enemies, with stone walls all around him pressing close. The Rock, he knew. He could feel the immense weight of it above his head. He was home. He was home and whole.
He held his right hand up and flexed his fingers to feel the strength in them. It felt as good as sex. As good as swordplay. Four fingers and a thumb. He had dreamed that he was maimed, but it wasn't so. Relief made him dizzy. My hand, my good hand. Nothing could hurt him so long as he was whole.
Around him stood a dozen tall dark figures in cowled robes that hid their faces. In their hands were spears. "Who are you?" he demanded of them. "What business do you have in Casterly Rock?"
They gave no answer, only prodded him with the points of their spears. He had no choice but to descend. Down a twisting passageway he went, narrow steps carved from the living rock, down and down. I must go up, he told himself. Up, not down. Why am I going down? Below the earth his doom awaited, he knew with the certainty of dream; something dark and terrible lurked there, something that wanted him. Jaime tried to halt, but their spears prodded him on. If only I had my sword, nothing could harm me.
The steps ended abruptly on echoing darkness. Jaime had the sense of vast space before him. He jerked to a halt, teetering on the edge of nothingness. A spearpoint jabbed at the small of the back, shoving him into the abyss. He shouted, but the fall was short. He landed on his hands and knees, upon soft sand and shallow water. There were watery caverns deep below Casterly Rock, but this one was strange to him. "What place is this?"
"Your place." The voice echoed; it was a hundred voices, a thousand, the voices of all the Lannisters since Lann the Clever, who'd lived at the dawn of days. But most of all it was his father's voice, and beside Lord Tywin stood his sister, pale and beautiful, a torch burning in her hand. Joffrey was there as well, the son they'd made together, and behind them a dozen more dark shapes with golden hair.
"Sister, why has Father brought us here?"
"Us? This is your place, Brother. This is your darkness." Her torch was the only light in the cavern. Her torch was the only light in the world. She turned to go.
"Stay with me," Jaime pleaded. "Don't leave me here alone." But they were leaving. "Don't leave me in the dark!" Something terrible lived down here. "Give me a sword, at least."
"I gave you a sword," Lord Tywin said.
It was at his feet. Jaime groped under the water until his hand closed upon the hilt. Nothing can hurt me so long as I have a sword. As he raised the sword a finger of pale flame flickered at the point and crept up along the edge, stopping a hand's breath from the hilt. The fire took on the color of the steel itself so it burned with a silvery-blue light, and the gloom pulled back. Crouching, listening, Jaime moved in a circle, ready for anything that might come out of the darkness. The water flowed into his boots, ankle deep and bitterly cold. Beware the water, he told himself. There may be creatures living in it, hidden deeps . . .
From behind came a great splash. Jaime whirled toward the sound . . . but the faint light revealed only Brienne of Tarth, her hands bound in heavy chains. "I swore to keep you safe," the wench said stubbornly. "I swore an oath." Naked, she raised her hands to Jaime. "Ser. Please. If you would be so good."
The steel links parted like silk. "A sword," Brienne begged, and there it was, scabbard, belt, and all. She buckled it around her thick waist. The light was so dim that Jaime could scarcely see her, though they stood a scant few feet apart. In this light she could almost be a beauty, he thought. In this light she could almost be a knight. Brienne's sword took flame as well, burning silvery blue. The darkness retreated a little more.
"The flames will burn so long as you live," he heard Cersei call. "When they die, so must you."
"Sister!" he shouted. "Stay with me. Stay!" There was no reply but the soft sound of retreating footsteps.
Brienne moved her longsword back and forth, watching the silvery flames shift and shimmer. Beneath her feet, a reflection of the burning blade shone on the surface of the flat black water. She was as tall and strong as he remembered, yet it seemed to Jaime that she had more of a woman's shape now.
"Do they keep a bear down here?" Brienne was moving, slow and wary, sword to hand; step, turn, and listen. Each step made a little splash. "A cave lion? Direwolves? Some bear? Tell me, Jaime. What lives here? What lives in the darkness?"
"Doom." No bear, he knew. No lion. "Only doom."
In the cool silvery-blue light of the swords, the big wench looked pale and fierce. "I mislike this place."
"I'm not fond of it myself." Their blades made a little island of light, but all around them stretched a sea of darkness, unending. "My feet are wet."
"We could go back the way they brought us. If you climbed on my shoulders you'd have no trouble reaching that tunnel mouth."
Then I could follow Cersei. He could feel himself growing hard at the thought, and turned away so Brienne would not see.
"Listen." She put a hand on his shoulder, and he trembled at the sudden touch. She's warm. "Something comes." Brienne lifted her sword to point off to his left. "There,"
He peered into the gloom until he saw it too. Something was moving through the darkness, he could not quite make it out . . .
"A man on a horse. No, two. Two riders, side by side."
"Down here, beneath the Rock?" It made no sense. Yet there came two riders on pale horses, men and mounts both armored. The destriers emerged from the blackness at a slow walk. They make no sound, Jaime realized. No splashing, no clink of mail nor clop of hoof. He remembered Eddard Stark, riding the length of Aerys's throne room wrapped in silence. Only his eyes had spoken; a lord's eyes, cold and grey and full of judgment.
"Is it you, Stark?" Jaime called. "Come ahead. I never feared you living, I do not fear you dead."
Brienne touched his arm. "There are more."
He saw them too. They were armored all in snow, it seemed to him, and ribbons of mist swirled back from their shoulders. The visors of their helms were closed, but Jaime Lannister did not need to look upon their faces to know them.
Five had been his brothers. Oswell Whent and Jon Darry. Lewyn Martell, a prince of Dorne. The White Bull, Gerold Hightower. Ser Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning. And beside them, crowned in mist and grief with his long hair streaming behind him, rode Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone and rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
"You don't frighten me," he called, turning as they split to either side of him. He did not know which way to face. "I will fight you one by one or all together. But who is there for the wench to duel? She gets cross when you leave her out."
"I swore an oath to keep him safe," she said to Rhaegar's shade. "I swore a holy oath."
"We all swore oaths," said Ser Arthur Dayne, so sadly.
The shades dismounted from their ghostly horses. When they drew their longswords, it made not a sound. "He was going to burn the city," Jaime said. "To leave Robert only ashes."
"He was your king," said Darry.
"You swore to keep him safe," said Whent.
"And the children, them as well," said Prince Lewyn.
Prince Rhaegar burned with a cold light, now white, now red, now dark. "I left my wife and children in your hands."
"I never thought he'd hurt them." Jaime's sword was burning less brightly now. "I was with the king . . . "
"Killing the king," said Ser Arthur.
"Cutting his throat," said Prince Lewyn.
"The king you had sworn to die for," said the White Bull.
The fires that ran along the blade were guttering out, and Jaime remembered what Cersei had said. No. Terror closed a hand about his throat. Then his sword went dark, and only Brienne's burned, as the ghosts came rushing in. {{Ref|aSoS|44}}}}

Jaime's second dream occurs after Riverrun has been handed over to his aunt and uncle {{quote|"That night he dreamed he was back in the Great Sept of Baelor, still standing vigil over his father’s corpse. The sept was still and dark, until a woman emerged from the shadows and walked slowly to the bier. “Sister?” he said.

But it was not Cersei. She was all in grey, a silent sister. A hood and veil concealed her features, but he could see the candles burning in the green pools of her eyes. “Sister,” he said, “what would you have of me?” His last word echoed up and down the sept,mememememememememememe.

“I am not your sister, Jaime.” She raised a pale soft hand and pushed her hood back. “Have you forgotten me?”

Can I forget someone I never knew? The words caught in his throat. He did know her, but it had been so long…

“Will you forget your own lord father too? I wonder if you ever knew him, truly.” Her eyes were green, her hair spun gold. He could not tell how old she was. Fifteen, he thought, or fifty. She climbed the steps to stand above the bier. “He could never abide being laughed at. That was the thing he hated most.”

“Who are you?” He had to hear her say it.

“The question is, who are you?”

“This is a dream.”

“Is it?... We all dream of things we cannot have. Tywin dreamed that his son would be a great knight, that his daughter would be a queen. He dreamed they would be so strong and brave and beautiful that no one would ever laugh at them.”

“I am a knight,’ he told her, “and Cersei is a queen.”

A tear rolled down her cheek. The woman raised her hood again and turned her back on him. Jaime called after her, but already she was moving away, her skirt whispering lullabies as it brushed across the floor. Don’t leave me, he wanted to call, but of course she’d left them long ago.}}

'''Arya Stark''' is the third child and second daughter of [[Eddard Stark|Lord Eddard]] and [[Catelyn Stark|Lady Catelyn]] Stark. She is nine at the start of ''[[A Game of Thrones]]''. She has five siblings: brothers [[Robb Stark|Robb]], [[Bran Stark|Bran]], [[Rickon Stark|Rickon]], half-brother [[Jon Snow]], and older sister [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]].

Like some of her siblings, she sometimes dreams that she is a [[direwolf]].{{ref|aSoS|3}} Her own direwolf is [[Nymeria (direwolf)|Nymeria]], who is named in reference to the [[Rhoynar]] warrior-queen [[Nymeria|of the same name]].

==Character and Appearance==
Arya is a spirited girl interested in fighting and exploration, unlike her older sister, [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]]. Arya wants to learn how to fight with a sword and ride in tourneys, to the horror of [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]], who enjoys the more traditional pursuits of a noblewoman. Arya is particularly close to her half brother [[Jon Snow]], who encourages her martial pursuits. [[Jon Snow]] gives Arya her first sword, [[Needle]], as a gift. Throughout her travels, Arya displays great resourcefulness, cunning, and an unflinching ability to accept hard necessity. She is said to take after her fiery aunt [[Lyanna Stark|Lyanna]] in temperament.{{Ref|aGoT|22}}

Arya's appearance is more Stark than Tully, with a long face, grey eyes, and brown hair. She is skinny and athletic. At the start of the story, she is generally regarded as plain, as exemplified by her nickname "Arya Horseface", and often mistaken for a boy. However, there are instances of her being called pretty, compared to the beautiful [[Lyanna Stark|Lyanna]]{{Ref|aGoT|22}}, and catching the eye of men later in the books. He tells her she will need to practice to get good, but that the first lesson is to "stick 'em with the pointy end". On the way south, she befriends a peasant boy named [[Mycah]]; they often play at swords.

While taking a walk together, Prince [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]] and her sister [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] happen upon Arya and Mycah "battling" in the woods. Arya defends Mycah from Joffrey's torments and her [[direwolf]] [[Nymeria (direwolf)|Nymeria]] helps Arya fight off Joffrey, wounding his arm in the process. Yoren shaves her head and makes Arya assume the identity of ''Arry'', a boy recruit traveling with Yoren to the Wall.{{Ref|aCoK|1}} They made it as far as a deserted town near the [[God's Eye]] lake, where they are attacked by raiders led by Ser [[Amory Lorch]]. Arya is one of the few to escape alive, along with [[Gendry]], [[Hot Pie]], [[Lommy Greenhands]], and [[Weasel]]. Weese's death is untraceable, apparently linked to his small dog that he raised from a pup. Whilst trying to figure out the last name to say, she realises she should have said a more important name, such as Tywin or Amory Lorch. A bit regretful, she thinks hard about how to make the last name count. Finally, she names Jaqen himself. To make her unsay his name, Jaqen helps her free the Northmen in the dungeon and stage an uprising. Afterwards, to Arya's amazement, Jaqen changes his face and manner in front of her, saying it was time for that person to die. He gives Arya an iron coin so she can find him again and leaves. The next morning, Lord [[Roose Bolton]] arrives to take charge of the castle. Arya, now calling herself ''Nymeria'', or ''Nan'' for short, is made one of Roose's cup-bearers for her role in the freeing of the prisoners. She inadvertently meets [[Elmar Frey|the squire]] she would have to marry under Robb's agreement with the Freys, though they remain unknown to each other.{{Ref|aCoK|47}}

She realizes she has been treated quite well under Roose and wishes to leave with him in an effort to get back to Winterfell and her family. She speaks out of turn to ask him what will happen to her. While Arya and her companions are making their way north, Arya wargs into Nymeria during a dream and sees Nymeria kill the members of the [[Brave Companions]] that were sent after them.{{Ref|aSoS|3}} Not long afterwards, she and her companions are discovered by a group of the [[Brotherhood Without Banners]] and taken to [[Inn of the Kneeling Man]], where she meets one of her father's former guards, [[Harwin]], who recognizes her as Arya Stark.{{Ref|aSoS|13}} Arya travels with the group to their hideout. At the Brotherhood's camp Arya encounters the recently captured [[Sandor Clegane]] standing for trial. She accuses him of murdering [[Mycah]], earning him a [[trial by combat]]. Disappointed with the Brotherhood and feeling alone in the world after [[Hot Pie]] and Gendry go their separate ways, Arya attempts to flee and ends up being captured by [[Sandor Clegane]], who was trailing the group.{{Ref|aSoS|43}} Sandor takes her to the [[Twins]], where he plans to return her to her brother [[Robb Stark|Robb]] and win a place in his service.{{Ref|aSoS|47}} They reach the [[Twins]] just as the slaughter of the [[Red Wedding]] begins. The Hound has to prevent Arya from running into the castle (and certain death) by knocking her out with the flat of his axe.{{Ref|aSoS|52}}

Sandor decides that the only place left to take her is to the [[Vale of Arryn]], which is ruled by Arya's aunt, [[Lysa Arryn|Lysa]]. On the way east, Arya finds a saddled horse. She takes him as her mount and names him [[Craven (horse)|Craven]]. However, it is soon discovered they cannot reach the [[Eyrie]], and they are forced to head back towards [[Riverrun]] to ransom her to Ser [[Brynden Tully]] instead.{{Ref|aSoS|65}}

On their way they stop at an inn where they meet the [[Tickler]] and [[Polliver]], two of the men on Arya's death list, as well as a young squire. The Hound gets drunk and a fight ensues. Arya manages to stab the squire in the belly while The Hound kills Polliver, though he is badly wounded in the fight. As the Tickler closes in on Sandor, Arya is able to sneak behind him and stab him. She continues to stab him while savagely echoing the questions he asked of his victims on their journey to Harrenhal. After, Sandor directs her to finish off the squire, who is dying of his wound. Arya reclaims [[Needle]] from Polliver's corpse and stabs the squire in the heart.

Arya and Sandor head towards the town of [[Saltpans]], but Sandor is too weak to continue and falls from his horse. Arya draws Needle, intending to kill him, but decides to leave him to die instead of administering the mercy of a quick death. Arya remains blind and in the service of the [[House of Black and White]] in [[Braavos]]. The blindness is induced by the milk she drinks every night. She continues to dream through the eyes of her [[direwolf]], [[Nymeria]], but speaks of it to no one. She still struggles with leaving her identity as Arya Stark behind. While she is blind, Arya wears the guise of ''Beth'', a beggar girl. She wanders the streets of Braavos, begging for money and listening for bits and pieces of information. She becomes better at lying and detecting the lies of others.

Arya receives her sight again after she is able to identify the [[Kindly Man]] and hit him with a stick when he sneaks up on her. It is implied, however, that she does not simply sense his presence (as he assumes) but sees him through the eyes of a cat hiding in the rafters.

After regaining her sight,{{Ref|aDwD|45}} Arya is given her first assassination assignment. She is asked to give "the gift" to an old man who sells a type of insurance for ships. The Kindly Man takes her to the secret lower chambers of the House of Black and White, where thousands of faces are hung on the walls. She is given the face of an ugly, broken girl who had been beaten by her father and came to the House of Black and White to seek the gift. Arya watches her target carefully for days. She notices that the old man has guards with him wherever he goes, and always tests the coin he is given with his teeth. While watching him, she attempts to find ways to justify his fate, but the Kindly Man tells her it is not for her to judge the old man.

In the end, she feigns stealing a bag of coins from a captain on his way to meet with the old man. She splits the bag in the attempt, and switches one of the captain's coins with one of her own, coated in poison. After the switch, she escapes. Later, the old man's heart mysteriously gives out.

During her journey, Arya is subjected to many hard situations in the war-torn [[Riverlands]]. Her fiery personality prompts her to take the initiative and fight back, and so she is led to kill and ultimately wishes to murder specific characters herself. This course of action is supposed to end as of ''[[A Feast for Crows]]'' with her being an assassin trainee in [[Braavos]], as the leader stresses becoming indifferent to death and killing. Secrets are Varys’s trade, and his skill at acquiring them has earned him a reputation for being seemingly omniscient. Crucial to his trade is a spy network of children that he refers to as his "little birds".

His history of providing information to all sides, of aiding enemies, of pitting rivals against one another, and of manipulation to achieve his ends has earned him a reputation of being distasteful and untrustworthy amongst the nobles at court. In private, however, he claims to value order, stability, and peace above all, and professes loyalty to those who work for those goals as well.

Varys is a eunuch; he is plump, completely bald and effeminate. He has soft white hands. He powders his face. {{Ref|aCoK|3}} He prefers comfortable clothing, fine silks (often in outrageous colors), and soft slippers that allow him to walk without making any sound. His outward manner is obsequious, mysterious, and squeamish. He is a master of disguise and can easily change his appearance, gait, smell, and costume to become unrecognizable.

Though nothing that Varys says can be completely trusted, he claims to have been born a slave in [[Lys]] that was sold and apprenticed to a traveling folly, a troupe of mummers who worked the [[Free Cities]], [[Oldtown]], and occasionally [[King's Landing]], by means of a fat little [[Ships|cog]] owned by the troupe's master. During their stay in [[Myr]], a man offered a large sum of money for Varys, an offer his master found too tempting to refuse. The man gave Varys a potion that made him powerless to move or speak, but did nothing to dull his senses as his manhood was cut off at the stem, then burnt in a brazier in a [[Blood Magic]] ritual. Varys claims to have held a hatred for all things magical ever since.{{Ref|aGoT|44}}

With the ritual complete, the man had no further use for Varys and tossed him out on the streets. By that time the mummers had sailed and Varys was left alone. He resorted to begging and thievery and soon was as good a thief as any in Myr, eventually becoming recognized as the best thief in the city until a rival forced him out and he fled to [[Pentos]].{{Ref|aCoK|44}}

In Pentos, Varys befriended a poor sellsword named [[Illyrio Mopatis]] and they started a business where Varys would steal objects from lesser thieves and Illyrio would get the objects back for their original owners for a small fee. Soon, every man and woman in Pentos who ever had valuables stolen from them all knew who to ask to get their valuables back. In addition, the thieves in Pentos soon began to seek Illyrio and Varys out, half to try (and failing) to kill them, the other half to sell them the objects they stole in order to prevent Varys from stealing them back. Varys and Illyrio grew very rich.

Varys came to the realization that information was much more valuable than gold and gems and began training his spy network, then known as ''"little mice"'', to acquire the information, letters, ledgers and charts of the wealthy and powerful. The "mice" were orphans purchased by Varys; he chose those that were small, quick, and quiet, and taught them to read and write, as well as the skills required for sneak thievery such as climbing walls and slipping down chimneys, so that they might copy the information Varys desired without disturbing or alarming their targets.

These secrets increased Varys and Illyrio's wealth tenfold, and in time Varys became so infamous that word of his talents reached the ears of [[Aerys II Targaryen|King Aerys]] across the [[Narrow Sea]], who in his growing paranoia no longer trusted his [[Rhaegar Targaryen|son]], his [[Rhaella Targaryen|wife]], or his [[Tywin Lannister|Hand]]. {{Ref|aDwD|5}}

As spymaster in [[King's Landing]], Varys's influence grew with Aerys's paranoia, as he was quick to point out traitors and schemers to his liege. Varys mastered the secret passages within the [[Red Keep]] and made good use of them with his spy network, who became known as his ''"little birds"''. He had them memorize the passages and come to him whenever one discovered something of importance. Notably, Varys alerted Aerys to the possibility that his son [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]] was using attendance at the [[Tourney at Harrenhal]] as a pretext to rally Lords to his cause in removing Aerys as king, causing Aerys to attend the tournament, the first time he had left the Red Keep in years since the [[Defiance of Duskendale]].

Following the [[Battle of the Trident]] during [[Robert's Rebellion]], Varys counseled Aerys to close his gates to [[Tywin Lannister]], as he could not be trusted. Aerys, however, listened to Grand Maester [[Pycelle]] and opened the gates to the Lannister forces, who proceeded to sack the city and kill the remaining Targaryens present.

Though he continued in his post for [[Robert Baratheon|King Robert]], Varys's loyalty seemingly remained with [[House Targaryen]]. He kept a secret arrangement with [[Illyrio Mopatis]], who seeks to put a Targaryen back on the [[Iron Throne]]. After the [[Hand's Tourney]], Varys disguises himself and comes to meet the [[Hand of the King]], Lord [[Eddard Stark]], at his chambers. He warns Eddard that Queen [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] is trying to kill King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]]. He states that his goal is peace and stability and professes to assist Lord Eddard in his investigations against [[House Lannister]]. Varys also reveals that the former hand, [[Jon Arryn]], was poisoned with the [[Tears of Lys]] for the crime of ''"asking questions"''.{{Ref|aGoT|30}}

Varys brings Ser [[Jorah Mormont|Jorah Mormont's]] report of [[Daenerys Targaryen]] being pregnant to the [[Small Council]], which results in King Robert's command to assassinate both her and her unborn child. When King Robert is slain, Varys remains master of whisperers for King [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]]. When Ned shows reluctance, Varys insinuates that the Lannisters will kill Sansa if Ned continues to defy them. Despite Varys's intentions to spare Eddard Stark's life, Joffrey goes against the council's wishes and decides at the last minute to have Ned Stark executed instead of allowing him to take the [[Night's Watch|black]] much to the shock of Varys and the other onlookers.{{Ref|aGoT|65}}

The arrival of [[Tyrion Lannister]] in [[King's Landing]] to serve as [[Hand of the King]] sees an uneasy alliance formed between Varys and Tyrion, with Varys providing Tyrion with information as to the goings-on in the city and the capital. Varys assists Tyrion in gaining control of the [[City Watch of King's Landing|city watch]] and informs him that Ser [[Lancel Lannister]] was sleeping with queen [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]].{{Ref|aCoK|8}}{{Ref|aCoK|29}}

Varys assists Tyrion in protecting [[Shae]], setting a up a secret route through which he can visit her and keep her true identity secret from Cersei.{{Ref|aCoK|8}} During their work togther, Varys reveals to Tyrion the origins of how he became castrated.{{Ref|aCoK|29}} It is also revealed that Varys was the one who sent [[Gendry]] with [[Yoren]] to join the [[Night's Watch]], so the boy would not be killed by Cersei's agents simply for the crime of being [[Robert I|Robert]]'s bastard.

After [[Tyrion Lannister]]'s recovery following the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], he seeks out Varys and seeks to resume their alliance, which includes his assistance in continuing to facilitate his trysts with [[Shae]]. Varys obliges him, though when Tyrion is put on trial for the murder of [[Joffrey Baratheon|King Joffrey]], Varys testifies against Tyrion, providing notes on conversations between the two and a great deal of seemingly damning evidence.

After Tyrion is condemned to die, however, Varys is forced by [[Jaime Lannister]], at swordpoint, to release Tyrion. He does so, and on the trip through the secret tunnels beneath the Red Keep leads Tyrion past a ladder that Tyrion recognizes as leading to the chamber of the Hand of the King. Against Varys's protestations he climbs the ladder to kill his father [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]].

After Varys's part in Tyrion's escape and Tywin's murder, he vanishes without a trace. A dungeon turnkey named [[Rugen]] disappears as well. In Rugen's living space a Tyrell coin is discovered and shown to Cersei, increasing Cersei's already-abundant mistrust of [[House Tyrell]]. It is believed by many readers that Rugen is an alias of Varys's, due to the identical description of the turnkey with Varys when he visited Ned Stark in the Black Cells.

[[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]], now ruling in King's Landing as Queen Regent to her son [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]], appoints [[Qyburn]] to fill the position of Master of Whisperers. Qyburn notes that many of Varys's spies came to him with secrets to sell, reinforcing Cersei's belief that Varys had always oversold his value to make people dependent on him and more vulnerable to his schemes.

Varys employs the secret passages to enter the chambers of Grand Maester [[Pycelle]] and kill him. He then dispatches one of his "little birds" to fetch [[Kevan Lannister]], now Lord Regent after Cersei's disgrace, under the pretext that the Grand Maester has a message for him.

Upon his entering the rookery, Varys shoots Kevan with a crossbow, going on to apologize and note that his actions are not out of malice but rather because Kevan's competent leadership threatened to undo Cersei's follies and years of Varys's careful planning. He explains to Kevan that [[Aegon Targaryen]] is still alive, and notes the preparations being made to make him the true leader, noting that his death will sow further dissent between the Lannisters and Tyrells, making the realm easy prey for Aegon to arrive and be proclaimed King, for the good of the realm. Varys then summons several of his "little birds" to end Ser Kevan's suffering.

An '''ice dragon''' is a species of [[dragon]] that exists in [[Westeros]]i fairytales. [[Old Nan]] used to tell tales of the ice dragon. Whether ice dragons did actually exist in the [[A Song of Ice and Fire]] world at one time is unknown.

There is no mention of the [[Valyrian]]s taming ice dragons although they did tame fire breathing [[dragons]].

Gilly has caged two rabbits in hopes of breeding them. However a hungry [[Ghost]] shatters the wooden hutch, killing the two rabbits, and terrifying Gilly. The young woman places her back against a wall and starts shouting, trying to convince the "wolf" to keep away from her. Her shouts attract the attention of [[Jon Snow]], and a few other members of the Watch. [[Lark]] jokingly claims that Jon is lying about not being a Lord. He introduces the young man to Gilly as "Lord Snow". [[Chett]] further introduces Jon as a [[Bastardy|bastard]] of [[Winterfell]] and brother to kings, an indirect reference to [[Robb Stark]], [[King In The North|King in the North]]. {{Ref|aCoK|23}}

The following morning, Gilly seeks out Jon. She is taking advantage of the fact that Craster is currently drunk and asleep. She states that when their war is done, Jon will have to return south through Craster's Keep. He will then have the opportunity to take her south. Jon shots down this proposal. He warns that he is not at freedom to choose the path of the army. This is the duty of [[Jeor Mormont]], who might lead them elsewhere. Following the [[Battle of the Fist of the First Men]], the remnants of the [[Night's Watch]] retreat. Among the marching soldiers is [[Samwell Tarly]]. {{Ref|aSoS|18}} A total of 44 survivors manage to reach [[Craster's Keep]]. {{Ref|aSoS|33}} In the loft of the Keep, Gilly goes in labor. One of Craster's older wives tends to her, instructing the young woman to push harder. A worried Samwell listens to her shuddering sobs and loud screams. On the other hand, [[Craster]] is annoyed. He instructs the would-be midwife to have Gilly bite down on a rag. Samwell is still able to hear the muffled shrieks. At last the midwife announces that she is able to see the head of the baby. {{Ref|aSoS|33}} Shortly after, Craster announces that he has [[The abomination|a son]]. [[Jeor Mormont]] claims to be glad for their host. His stiff face says otherwise. {{Ref|aSoS|33}}

The [[Mutiny at Craster's Keep]] takes place, and Craster is killed before he can sacrifice the child. Samwell recovers from deep shock, and finds himself sitting cross-legged on the floor, with the dying Mormont’s head in his lap. He is there approached by Gilly and two "haggard old women", all widows of Craster. The two are identified as [[Dyah]] and [[Ferny]]. Gilly brings along her son, bundled up in fur. [[Gilly]] reminds Samwell of his promise to help her: {{Ref|aSoS|33}}

Dyah has two [[horse]]s available for them. Ferny presses the young man to take "the girl" without wasting time. Both old women insist that Gilly has to be taken to someplace warm. When Sam asks who “they”, Dyah replies:

Samwell, Gilly, and her son jointly leave Craster's Keep, heading south. Three days later, one of their horses dies. Samwell is convinced that his weight killed the animal. He decides to have Gilly ride their remaining horse, while he walks beside it. Gilly keeps carrying the infant. Samwell notes that Gilly has yet to recover from the ordeal of childbirth. {{Ref|aSoS|46}} The travelers eventually manage to reach [[Whitetree]], though they are running out of food. The baby seems "tiny" and "quiet" to Samwell, causing the man to worry for its health. {{Ref|aSoS|46}} They settle themselves in the longhall. Gilly soon starts a fire, and breast-feeds her son. Gilly, still breast-feeding her son, asks whether Samwell himself can sing. He admits to knowing some songs, though his father [[Randyll Tarly]] frowned on him singing or dancing. Gilly asks her companion to sing a "southron song", a song for her baby. Samwell complies and sings "[[The Song of the Seven]]". Gilly's son falls asleep. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

The adults sleep together under the furs, They have taken to sleeping together to share body heat. The infant seems to sleep by their side. Gilly wakes up before her companion does. She sits by the fire, hugging her son. When Samwell wakes up, Gilly is weeping. She informs him than someone has come to claim the life of her baby. A figure emerges from the shadows. He is a wight and Samwell recognizes him as [[Paul|Small Paul]]. Samwell instructs Gilly to calm their horse and lead it outside. He moves away from Gilly and her son, hoping that Small Paul will shift his attention to him. Gilly claws around on the floor, and Paul seems to be observing her. Samwell shouts and provides a distraction. Allowing Gilly to reach their horse. As Samwell faces Paul, Gilly murmurs to calm down the horse. Already trying to lead it towards the door. The horse is scared and goes out of control. Samwell struggles agains Small Paul and manages to set the wight on fire. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Gilly has managed to escape from the longhall, taking the baby with her. But the village has been invaded by other wights, both former [[wildlings]] and former members of the Night's Watch. Gilly stands with her back against the village [[weirwood]], as the wights surround her. Some of them kill the horse. As the wights keep approaching, Gilly screams. Her screams mix with those of a nearby [[raven]]. Suddenly thousands of ravens appear and attack the wights, feeding on their flesh. One of the ravens is shouting an instruction for Samwell and Gilly: "Go". Samwell manages to reach Gilly and takes her hand into his own. He pulls her away from the weirwood, insisting that they have to go. She objects that the wights killed their horse. She doubts if they can both continue on foot. At this point [[Coldhands]] appears and offers to help them out. He invites them to ride on his [[w:Irish elk|elk]], an animal 10 feet tall (3,05 meters) at the shoulder. Coldhands reaches down with a gloved hand, pulling Gilly up. She is seated behind him. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Coldhands leads the travelers to the Black Gate of the Nightfort. Gilly and Samwell emerge from a well, finding themselves in the kitchens of the abandoned castle. Gilly's son starts wailing, the sound seems like "a piercing creech" to [[Bran Stark]]. The Stark boy is there with his companions [[Meera Reed]], [[Jojen Reed]], [[Hodor]], and [[Summer (direwolf)|Summer]]. Samwell is immediately attacked by Meera, who covers him with her net and threatens him with her spear. Gilly attempts to shush her wailing baby. Jojen starts a fire and sheds some light, allowing the two groups to examine each other. Bran first notices the mother and child, then identifies Samwell as a member of the Night's Watch. Gilly identifies herself to Jojen, and assures the strangers that they were not trying to scare them. Meanwhile, she rocks her son and manages to calm him down. When summer approaches the gathered humans, Gilly is scared of the direwolf and tightens her hold on her son. The baby starts crying again. Samwell instead offers his hand to the direwolf, and Summer licks the offered hand. While Samwell leads the northmen to the Black Gate, Gilly and the baby stay back in the kitchen. They enjoying the fire there. Gilly starts breast-feeding her son. She states her certainty that Samwell will return for her. Her companion promises to lead her somewhere warm. {{Ref|aSoS|56}}

Gilly and Samwell leave the Nightfort on foot, taking the infant with them. They are heading east. They walk the distance from the Nightfort to [[Deep Lake]], from there they walk to [[Queensgate]], and then they start heading for [[Castle Black]]. They are still a day-and-a-half away from their destination when Gilly hears horses. The weary travelers make contact with the riders, which turn out to be members of the Night's Watch. This unit is under the leadership of [[Denys Mallister]] from the [[Shadow Tower]], and includes the survivors of the [[Battle of the Bridge of Skulls]]. Old friends inform Samwell of the of the recent [[Battle of Castle Black]]. The travellers join the unit to its destination in Castle Black. {{Ref|aSoS|75}} Denys treast Samwell and Gilly "most courteously". {{Ref|aSoS|78}}

They find Castle Black serving as the headquarters of [[Stannis Baratheon]] and his army. Gilly soon finds a position as wetnurse to the [[Wildling prince]]. In [[Castle Black]], [[Samwell Tarly]] is asked to report to Lord Commander [[Jon Snow]]. Samwell approaches the private quarters of Jon Snow, previously occupied by [[Donal Noye]]. He sees Gilly leaving said quarters, still dressed in his old cloak. Her face is half-hidden by the hood of the cloak. She almost rushes past him, apparently failing to notice her former companion. He catches her arm and greets her. Her own greeting is given in a raw voice. Samwell notices that Gilly is shivering, and her face seems wan. She is evidently scared. He asks her if there is something wrong, and whether something happened to her two infants. She claims that both boys are fine. Though there is a marked difference between them. The Wildling Prince keeps crying at night, requesting further feeding. Her own son "hardly ever cries", and occasionally gurgles. Suddenly her eyes feel with tears. She claims that she is in a hurry to feed the boys, then rushes across the yard. Leaving Samwell perplexed. {{Ref|aFfC|5}}

[[Gilly]] is sent south aboard a ship to [[Oldtown]] (via [[Braavos]]) with [[Samwell Tarly]], [[Dareon]], and [[Maester Aemon]], ostensibly with her child {{Ref|aFfC|5}}; in truth Lord Commander [[Jon Snow]] swapped her child with the [[Wildling prince|Wildling Prince]], son of [[Mance Rayder]] and [[Dalla]]. [[Jon Snow]]’s POV reveals how he managed to secretly switch the infants. He tells [[Stannis Baratheon]] that [[Gilly]] is just another mouth to feed and he wants her gone. [[Melisandre]] intervenes, pointing that Gilly provides milk for the [[Wildling prince|Wildling Prince]]. She also points that Jon's plan will separate two milk brothers, a rather cruel act. Jon claims that the abomination is a larger and more robust baby than the Prince, taking after his father [[Craster]]. And that he kicks and pinches his fellow infant. {{Ref|aDwD|3}} In fact, the abomination is the weaker of the two infants. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Stannis is confused at the mention of Craster as the father of Gilly's child. He was under the impression that the wetnurse was Craster's daughter, not his wife. Jon clarifies that Gilly was both daughter and wife to Craster. Stannis is shocked. He tells Jon that he will not suffer such an abomination at the [[Wall]], as this is not [[King's Landing]]. Stannis’s disgust serves to work in Jon’s favour; Jon offers to search for a replacement wet nurse among the [[Free Folk|wildlings]] and the [[Northern mountain clans]]. In the meanwhile the "Prince" (the abomination) will have to survive on goat's milk. Jon explains to her that Melisandre needs "king's blood" for her spells, and that she will eventually burn the infant. Gilly weeps softly. She offers to leave Castle Black, taking both children with her. Intent on not leaving her own son behind. Jon points the obvious flow in her plan. The [[Queen's Men]] would ride after them. The boy will still burn, the only difference being that Gilly will join him in the pyre. As Jon keeps pressing her, Gilly offers her arguments against his own plan. Mothers who abandon their sons are forever cursed, a fate which she wants to avoid. She mentions all her previous efforts to rescue the abomination from the cold. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Jon then compares a "peaceful" death in freezing to death against a violent, painful death in burning to death. He asks Gilly to place her hand on the flame of a nearby candle. Then reminds Gilly of her responsibility to the Prince, a boy which she nourished and cherished. In his words, she had saved one boy from the ice. He will make sure of it. The threat has an effect. She also asks him to keep the Monster away from Melisandre. Val is convinced that the Red Woman already knows the true identity of the boy. Jon questions whether Melisandre would have let them switch the infants if she knew about their plot. Val replies that the Red Woman could have allowed them to do so because the plot suited her. [[Selyse Florent]] and her entourage arrive at [[Castle Black]]. The Queen and [[Shireen Baratheon]] are settled in the [[King's Tower]], where Melisandre already resides. {{Ref|aDwD|44}} [[Torghen Flint]] and [[Brandon Norrey]] arrive at Castle Black to attend the wedding of [[Alys Karstark]] and [[Sigorn]], [[Magnar]] of [[Thenn]]. Her breasts are big, the biggest that Jon Snow has ever seen. The woman representing [[House Flint of the mountains]] is 14-year-old and flat-chested as a boy. Tormund leads thousands of Free Folk to the Wall, and negotiates terms with Jon Snow. Val has arrived with him. She asks Jon about the health of the Little Monster. He reports that the Monster is thriving. The boy has reportedly grown to twice the size that Val remembers, and his wail has grown three time as loud. Jon jokes that when the boy is hungry and requesting milk, his wail can be heard as far as [[Eastwatch-by-the-Sea]]. {{Ref|aDwD|53}} Jon Snow introduces Val to Selyse. They have never met before, though they have heard of each other. During the meeting, Val first sees Shireen. She recognizes the signs of [[Greyscale]]. She worries about the safety of the Little Monster, and wants to keep her surrogate nephew away from Shireen. She asks Jon to have the Monster and his two wet nurses move away from the King's Tower. Away from "the dead girl". Val claims the safety of the Monster to be payment for Jon's debt to her. The young woman places her back against a wall and starts shouting, trying to convince the "wolf" to keep away from her. Her shouts attract the attention of [[Jon Snow]], and a few other members of the Watch. [[Lark]] jokingly claims that Jon is lying about not being a Lord. He introduces the young man to Gilly as "Lord Snow". [[Chett]] further introduces Jon as a [[Bastardy|bastard]] of [[Winterfell]] and brother to kings, an indirect reference to [[Robb Stark]], [[King In The North|King in the North]]. {{Ref|aCoK|23}}

He warns that he is not at freedom to choose the path of the army. This is the duty of [[Jeor Mormont]], who might lead them elsewhere. Following the [[Battle of the Fist of the First Men]], the remnants of the [[Night's Watch]] retreat. One of Craster's older wives tends to her, instructing the young woman to push harder. A worried Samwell listens to her shuddering sobs and loud screams. On the other hand, [[Craster]] is annoyed. He instructs the would-be midwife to have Gilly bite down on a rag. Samwell is still able to hear the muffled shrieks. At last the midwife announces that she is able to see the head of the baby. {{Ref|aSoS|33}} Shortly after, Craster announces that he has [[The abomination|a son]]. [[Jeor Mormont]] claims to be glad for their host. His stiff face says otherwise. {{Ref|aSoS|33}}

The [[Mutiny at Craster's Keep]] takes place, and Craster is killed before he can sacrifice the child. Samwell recovers from deep shock, and finds himself sitting cross-legged on the floor, with the dying Mormont’s head in his lap. He is there approached by Gilly and two "haggard old women", all widows of Craster. The two are identified as [[Dyah]] and [[Ferny]]. Gilly brings along her son, bundled up in fur. Samwell notes that Gilly has yet to recover from the ordeal of childbirth. {{Ref|aSoS|46}} The travelers eventually manage to reach [[Whitetree]], though they are running out of food. The baby seems "tiny" and "quiet" to Samwell, causing the man to worry for its health. {{Ref|aSoS|46}} They settle themselves in the longhall. Gilly soon starts a fire, and breast-feeds her son. Gilly, still breast-feeding her son, asks whether Samwell himself can sing. He admits to knowing some songs, though his father [[Randyll Tarly]] frowned on him singing or dancing. He moves away from Gilly and her son, hoping that Small Paul will shift his attention to him. Gilly claws around on the floor, and Paul seems to be observing her. Samwell shouts and provides a distraction. Allowing Gilly to reach their horse. As Samwell faces Paul, Gilly murmurs to calm down the horse. Already trying to lead it towards the door. The horse is scared and goes out of control. Samwell struggles agains Small Paul and manages to set the wight on fire. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Gilly has managed to escape from the longhall, taking the baby with her. But the village has been invaded by other wights, both former [[wildlings]] and former members of the Night's Watch. Gilly stands with her back against the village [[weirwood]], as the wights surround her. Some of them kill the horse. As the wights keep approaching, Gilly screams. Her screams mix with those of a nearby [[raven]]. Suddenly thousands of ravens appear and attack the wights, feeding on their flesh. One of the ravens is shouting an instruction for Samwell and Gilly: "Go". Samwell manages to reach Gilly and takes her hand into his own. He pulls her away from the weirwood, insisting that they have to go. She objects that the wights killed their horse. She doubts if they can both continue on foot. At this point [[Coldhands]] appears and offers to help them out. He invites them to ride on his [[w:Irish elk|elk]], an animal 10 feet tall (3,05 meters) at the shoulder. Coldhands reaches down with a gloved hand, pulling Gilly up. She is seated behind him. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Coldhands leads the travelers to the Black Gate of the Nightfort. Gilly and Samwell emerge from a well, finding themselves in the kitchens of the abandoned castle. Gilly's son starts wailing, the sound seems like "a piercing creech" to [[Bran Stark]]. The Stark boy is there with his companions [[Meera Reed]], [[Jojen Reed]], [[Hodor]], and [[Summer (direwolf)|Summer]]. Samwell is immediately attacked by Meera, who covers him with her net and threatens him with her spear. Gilly attempts to shush her wailing baby. Jojen starts a fire and sheds some light, allowing the two groups to examine each other. Bran first notices the mother and child, then identifies Samwell as a member of the Night's Watch. Gilly identifies herself to Jojen, and assures the strangers that they were not trying to scare them. Meanwhile, she rocks her son and manages to calm him down. Old friends inform Samwell of the of the recent [[Battle of Castle Black]]. He sees Gilly leaving said quarters, still dressed in his old cloak. Her face is half-hidden by the hood of the cloak. She almost rushes past him, apparently failing to notice her former companion. He catches her arm and greets her. Her own greeting is given in a raw voice. Samwell notices that Gilly is shivering, and her face seems wan. She is evidently scared. He asks her if there is something wrong, and whether something happened to her two infants. She claims that both boys are fine. Though there is a marked difference between them. The Wildling Prince keeps crying at night, requesting further feeding. Her own son "hardly ever cries", and occasionally gurgles. Suddenly her eyes feel with tears. [[Jon Snow]]’s POV reveals how he managed to secretly switch the infants. He tells [[Stannis Baratheon]] that [[Gilly]] is just another mouth to feed and he wants her gone. [[Melisandre]] intervenes, pointing that Gilly provides milk for the [[Wildling prince|Wildling Prince]]. She also points that Jon's plan will separate two milk brothers, a rather cruel act. Jon claims that the abomination is a larger and more robust baby than the Prince, taking after his father [[Craster]]. And that he kicks and pinches his fellow infant. {{Ref|aDwD|3}} In fact, the abomination is the weaker of the two infants. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Stannis is confused at the mention of Craster as the father of Gilly's child. He was under the impression that the wetnurse was Craster's daughter, not his wife. Jon clarifies that Gilly was both daughter and wife to Craster. Stannis is shocked. He tells Jon that he will not suffer such an abomination at the [[Wall]], as this is not [[King's Landing]]. Stannis’s disgust serves to work in Jon’s favour; Jon offers to search for a replacement wet nurse among the [[Free Folk|wildlings]] and the [[Northern mountain clans]]. In the meanwhile the "Prince" (the abomination) will have to survive on goat's milk. Stannis tells Jon that goat’s milk is better fare for a prince than whore’s milk, and the conversation then turns toward more urgent matters. {{Ref|aDwD|3}} <ref>The events of aDwD, Chapter 3 precede those of aFfC, Chapter 5.</ref>

Later Jon speaks privately to Gilly. He enquires on the health of the two infants. Gilly replies that she was initially afraid that her milk would be insufficient to feed both babies. Their subject will be his son, the Wildling Prince. This scares Gilly, who fears that Melisandre will burn the innocent boy. She asks Jon to save the Prince. Gilly immediately realises what Jon means to do and begs Jon not to make her leave her son at the Wall. Jon explains to her that Melisandre needs "king's blood" for her spells, and that she will eventually burn the infant. Gilly weeps softly. She offers to leave Castle Black, taking both children with her. Intent on not leaving her own son behind. Jon points the obvious flow in her plan. The [[Queen's Men]] would ride after them. The boy will still burn, the only difference being that Gilly will join him in the pyre. As Jon keeps pressing her, Gilly offers her arguments against his own plan. Mothers who abandon their sons are forever cursed, a fate which she wants to avoid. She mentions all her previous efforts to rescue the abomination from the cold. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Jon then compares a "peaceful" death in freezing to death against a violent, painful death in burning to death. He asks Gilly to place her hand on the flame of a nearby candle. With her body trembling, Gilly briefly touches the flame and feels pain. Jon has demonstrated what kind of death the Prince will face. Then reminds Gilly of her responsibility to the Prince, a boy which she nourished and cherished. In his words, she had saved one boy from the ice. She now has to save the other from the fire. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Gilly protests that the plan will result in Melisandre burning her own son. Jon states that the abomination is safe in not having "king's blood". Melisandre will gain nothing in claiming his life. Stannis will not burn an innocent. At least not if the act earns him nothing and costs him the loyalty of the wildlings. Then Jon Snow offers a future for the boy, promising to raise him at Castle. Offering his ward protection, and training in hunting, horse-riding, use of weapons (sword, axe, and bow), reading and writing. Gilly, still in tears, points that this future results in her son becoming a "crow" of the [[Night's Watch]]. Jon next threatens her. If the Prince dies, the abomination dies on the same day. He will make sure of it. The threat has an effect. She also asks him to keep the Monster away from Melisandre. Val is convinced that the Red Woman already knows the true identity of the boy. Jon questions whether Melisandre would have let them switch the infants if she knew about their plot. Val replies that the Red Woman could have allowed them to do so because the plot suited her. Her breasts are big, the biggest that Jon Snow has ever seen. The woman representing [[House Flint of the mountains]] is 14-year-old and flat-chested as a boy. Tormund leads thousands of Free Folk to the Wall, and negotiates terms with Jon Snow. Val has arrived with him. She asks Jon about the health of the Little Monster. He reports that the Monster is thriving. The boy has reportedly grown to twice the size that Val remembers, and his wail has grown three time as loud. Jon jokes that when the boy is hungry and requesting milk, his wail can be heard as far as [[Eastwatch-by-the-Sea]]. {{Ref|aDwD|53}} Jon Snow introduces Val to Selyse. They have never met before, though they have heard of each other. During the meeting, Val first sees Shireen. She recognizes the signs of [[Greyscale]]. She worries about the safety of the Little Monster, and wants to keep her surrogate nephew away from Shireen. She asks Jon to have the Monster and his two wet nurses move away from the King's Tower. Away from "the dead girl". Val claims the safety of the Monster to be payment for Jon's debt to her. During [[the Great Ranging]], the [[Night's Watch]] stops at [[Craster's Keep]]. [[Gilly]] is in the early months of her pregnancy. The sheeps of [[Craster]] have already died out. Gilly has caged two rabbits in hopes of breeding them. However a hungry [[Ghost]] shatters the wooden hutch, killing the two rabbits, and terrifying Gilly. The young woman places her back against a wall and starts shouting, trying to convince the "wolf" to keep away from her. Her shouts attract the attention of [[Jon Snow]], and a few other members of the Watch. [[Lark]] jokingly claims that Jon is lying about not being a Lord. He introduces the young man to Gilly as "Lord Snow". [[Chett]] further introduces Jon as a [[Bastardy|bastard]] of [[Winterfell]] and brother to kings, an indirect reference to [[Robb Stark]], [[King In The North|King in the North]]. {{Ref|aCoK|23}}

The following morning, Gilly seeks out Jon. She is taking advantage of the fact that Craster is currently drunk and asleep. She states that when their war is done, Jon will have to return south through Craster's Keep. He will then have the opportunity to take her south. Jon shots down this proposal. He warns that he is not at freedom to choose the path of the army. This is the duty of [[Jeor Mormont]], who might lead them elsewhere. ===A Storm of Swords===

Following the [[Battle of the Fist of the First Men]], the remnants of the [[Night's Watch]] retreat. Among the marching soldiers is [[Samwell Tarly]]. {{Ref|aSoS|18}} A total of 44 survivors manage to reach [[Craster's Keep]]. {{Ref|aSoS|33}} In the loft of the Keep, Gilly goes in labor. One of Craster's older wives tends to her, instructing the young woman to push harder. A worried Samwell listens to her shuddering sobs and loud screams. On the other hand, [[Craster]] is annoyed. He instructs the would-be midwife to have Gilly bite down on a rag. Samwell is still able to hear the muffled shrieks. At last the midwife announces that she is able to see the head of the baby. {{Ref|aSoS|33}} Shortly after, Craster announces that he has [[The abomination|a son]]. [[Jeor Mormont]] claims to be glad for their host. His stiff face says otherwise. {{Ref|aSoS|33}}

The [[Mutiny at Craster's Keep]] takes place, and Craster is killed before he can sacrifice the child. Samwell recovers from deep shock, and finds himself sitting cross-legged on the floor, with the dying Mormont’s head in his lap. He is there approached by Gilly and two "haggard old women", all widows of Craster. The two are identified as [[Dyah]] and [[Ferny]]. Gilly brings along her son, bundled up in fur. [[Gilly]] reminds Samwell of his promise to help her: {{Ref|aSoS|33}}

The baby seems "tiny" and "quiet" to Samwell, causing the man to worry for its health. {{Ref|aSoS|46}} They settle themselves in the longhall. Gilly soon starts a fire, and breast-feeds her son. Gilly, still breast-feeding her son, asks whether Samwell himself can sing. He admits to knowing some songs, though his father [[Randyll Tarly]] frowned on him singing or dancing. She sits by the fire, hugging her son. When Samwell wakes up, Gilly is weeping. She informs him than someone has come to claim the life of her baby. A figure emerges from the shadows. He is a wight and Samwell recognizes him as [[Paul|Small Paul]]. Samwell instructs Gilly to calm their horse and lead it outside. He moves away from Gilly and her son, hoping that Small Paul will shift his attention to him. Gilly claws around on the floor, and Paul seems to be observing her. Samwell shouts and provides a distraction. Allowing Gilly to reach their horse. As Samwell faces Paul, Gilly murmurs to calm down the horse. Already trying to lead it towards the door. The horse is scared and goes out of control. Samwell struggles agains Small Paul and manages to set the wight on fire. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Gilly has managed to escape from the longhall, taking the baby with her. But the village has been invaded by other wights, both former [[wildlings]] and former members of the Night's Watch. Gilly stands with her back against the village [[weirwood]], as the wights surround her. Some of them kill the horse. As the wights keep approaching, Gilly screams. Her screams mix with those of a nearby [[raven]]. Suddenly thousands of ravens appear and attack the wights, feeding on their flesh. One of the ravens is shouting an instruction for Samwell and Gilly: "Go". Samwell manages to reach Gilly and takes her hand into his own. He pulls her away from the weirwood, insisting that they have to go. She objects that the wights killed their horse. She doubts if they can both continue on foot. At this point [[Coldhands]] appears and offers to help them out. He invites them to ride on his [[w:Irish elk|elk]], an animal 10 feet tall (3,05 meters) at the shoulder. Coldhands reaches down with a gloved hand, pulling Gilly up. She is seated behind him. {{Ref|aSoS|46}}

Coldhands leads the travelers to the Black Gate of the Nightfort. Gilly and Samwell emerge from a well, finding themselves in the kitchens of the abandoned castle. Gilly's son starts wailing, the sound seems like "a piercing creech" to [[Bran Stark]]. The Stark boy is there with his companions [[Meera Reed]], [[Jojen Reed]], [[Hodor]], and [[Summer (direwolf)|Summer]]. Samwell is immediately attacked by Meera, who covers him with her net and threatens him with her spear. Gilly attempts to shush her wailing baby. Jojen starts a fire and sheds some light, allowing the two groups to examine each other. Bran first notices the mother and child, then identifies Samwell as a member of the Night's Watch. Gilly identifies herself to Jojen, and assures the strangers that they were not trying to scare them. Meanwhile, she rocks her son and manages to calm him down. Ending his loud wailing. {{Ref|aSoS|56}}

When summer approaches the gathered humans, Gilly is scared of the direwolf and tightens her hold on her son. The baby starts crying again. Samwell instead offers his hand to the direwolf, and Summer licks the offered hand. While Samwell leads the northmen to the Black Gate, Gilly and the baby stay back in the kitchen. They enjoying the fire there. Gilly starts breast-feeding her son. She states her certainty that Samwell will return for her. Her companion promises to lead her somewhere warm. {{Ref|aSoS|56}}

Gilly and Samwell leave the Nightfort on foot, taking the infant with them. They are heading east. They walk the distance from the Nightfort to [[Deep Lake]], from there they walk to [[Queensgate]], and then they start heading for [[Castle Black]]. They are still a day-and-a-half away from their destination when Gilly hears horses. The weary travelers make contact with the riders, which turn out to be members of the Night's Watch. This unit is under the leadership of [[Denys Mallister]] from the [[Shadow Tower]], and includes the survivors of the [[Battle of the Bridge of Skulls]]. Old friends inform Samwell of the of the recent [[Battle of Castle Black]]. The travellers join the unit to its destination in Castle Black. {{Ref|aSoS|75}} Denys treast Samwell and Gilly "most courteously". {{Ref|aSoS|78}}

They find Castle Black serving as the headquarters of [[Stannis Baratheon]] and his army. Gilly soon finds a position as wetnurse to the [[Wildling prince]]. The father of this boy, [[Mance Rayder]] is in captivity, while his mother [[Dalla]] died in childbirth. {{Ref|aSoS|75}} {{Ref|aSoS|76}} The boy's aunt, [[Val]], explains that the boy previously had to survive on goat's milk and potions provided by [[Maester Aemon]]. Gilly notes that the Prince sucks milk harder than her own son. [[Jon Snow]] observes Gilly breat-feeding the Prince with a sad smile on his face. However, Samwell mentally notes that this a relatively rare smile from Jon. Jon finds amusing that Craster's daughter is feeding Mance's son, since their fathers were never fond of each other. In a soft, shy voice, Gilly answers that she has enough milk for the two babies. Pointing that her own son is content with a small portion of the breast milk, not as greedy as the Prince. {{Ref|aSoS|75}}

Samwell and Jon later converse privately. Samwell also explains about working on a plan to sent Gilly away. He contemplates sending her to Horn Hill, claiming her son as a bastard of [[House Tarly]]. He considers that both the Wildling Prince and Gilly's boy could then be fostered at Winterfell. The new couple could also offer a position to Gilly herself. He considers the idea of the sons of Craster and Mance growing up as brothers. A relationship similar to his own with [[Robb Stark]]. He is seriously considering the idea, when his thoughts suddenly turn to hunger and hunting prey. [[Jon Snow]]’s POV reveals how he managed to secretly switch the infants. He tells [[Stannis Baratheon]] that [[Gilly]] is just another mouth to feed and he wants her gone. [[Melisandre]] intervenes, pointing that Gilly provides milk for the [[Wildling prince|Wildling Prince]]. She also points that Jon's plan will separate two milk brothers, a rather cruel act. Jon claims that the abomination is a larger and more robust baby than the Prince, taking after his father [[Craster]]. And that he kicks and pinches his fellow infant. {{Ref|aDwD|3}} In fact, the abomination is the weaker of the two infants. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Stannis is confused at the mention of Craster as the father of Gilly's child. He was under the impression that the wetnurse was Craster's daughter, not his wife. Jon clarifies that Gilly was both daughter and wife to Craster. Stannis is shocked. He tells Jon that he will not suffer such an abomination at the [[Wall]], as this is not [[King's Landing]]. Stannis’s disgust serves to work in Jon’s favour; Jon offers to search for a replacement wet nurse among the [[Free Folk|wildlings]] and the [[Northern mountain clans]]. In the meanwhile the "Prince" (the abomination) will have to survive on goat's milk. Later Jon speaks privately to Gilly. He enquires on the health of the two infants. Gilly replies that she was initially afraid that her milk would be insufficient to feed both babies. Gilly thinks that the Lord Commander has bad news concerning the fate of [[Mance Rayder]]. But corrects Gilly, their conversation will not be about Mance. Their subject will be his son, the Wildling Prince. This scares Gilly, who fears that Melisandre will burn the innocent boy. She asks Jon to save the Prince. Gilly immediately realises what Jon means to do and begs Jon not to make her leave her son at the Wall. Jon explains to her that Melisandre needs "king's blood" for her spells, and that she will eventually burn the infant. Gilly weeps softly. She offers to leave Castle Black, taking both children with her. Intent on not leaving her own son behind. Jon points the obvious flow in her plan. The [[Queen's Men]] would ride after them. The boy will still burn, the only difference being that Gilly will join him in the pyre. As Jon keeps pressing her, Gilly offers her arguments against his own plan. Mothers who abandon their sons are forever cursed, a fate which she wants to avoid. She mentions all her previous efforts to rescue the abomination from the cold. {{Ref|aDwD|7}}

Jon then compares a "peaceful" death in freezing to death against a violent, painful death in burning to death. He asks Gilly to place her hand on the flame of a nearby candle. With her body trembling, Gilly briefly touches the flame and feels pain. Jon has demonstrated what kind of death the Prince will face. Then reminds Gilly of her responsibility to the Prince, a boy which she nourished and cherished. In his words, she had saved one boy from the ice. Gilly protests that the plan will result in Melisandre burning her own son. Jon states that the abomination is safe in not having "king's blood". Melisandre will gain nothing in claiming his life. Stannis will not burn an innocent. At least not if the act earns him nothing and costs him the loyalty of the wildlings. Then Jon Snow offers a future for the boy, promising to raise him at Castle. Offering his ward protection, and training in hunting, horse-riding, use of weapons (sword, axe, and bow), reading and writing. Gilly, still in tears, points that this future results in her son becoming a "crow" of the [[Night's Watch]]. Jon next threatens her. If the Prince dies, the abomination dies on the same day. He will make sure of it. The threat has an effect. Jon questions whether Melisandre would have let them switch the infants if she knew about their plot. Val replies that the Red Woman could have allowed them to do so because the plot suited her.
