The '''Battle of the Blackwater''' was the largest conflict in the [[War of the Five Kings]]. The battle was fought between forces loyal to [[Stannis Baratheon]] and those loyal to Joffrey Baratheon. Stannis' army was on the verge of defeating the garrison of King's Landing, but was taken by surprise and all but annihilated by the joint forces of [[Tywin Lannister]] and the [[House Tyrell|Tyrells]].

==Prelude==
===Dragonstone===
Stannis was one of the first members of [[Robert Baratheon|King Robert's]] [[Small Council]] to harbor suspicions of the parentage of the king's children, and to discover that they were born of incest between [[Cersei Lannister|Queen Cersei Lannister]] and her brother [[Jaime Lannister|Ser Jaime]]. Taking his suspicions and what proof he could muster, in the form of Robert's numerous bastard children, to [[Jon Arryn|Lord Arryn]], he hoped to convince the [[Hand of the King]], one of Robert's oldest and most trusted friends, of the Lannisters' treason. When Arryn died under suspicious circumstances shortly thereafter, Stannis fled to Dragonstone, his seat of power. Rallying what strength he could, with but few [[House Baratheon of Dragonstone#Sworn_to_Dragonstone|Houses sworn to Dragonstone]], he closed the port and its surrounding waters, hiring mercenaries and pirates of the [[Free Cities]] to augment his forces. As the lord of an island fiefdom and the former Master of Ships, Stannis' naval power was considerable, but the sparse population of the rocky, volcanic islands surrounding Dragonstone left him without the strength to risk openly contesting the Lannisters.{{Ref|aCoK|Prologue}}{{Ref|aCoK|10}}

After Robert died, Stannis presented his claims through letters distributed throughout the Seven Kingdoms, proclaiming [[Joffrey Baratheon|Prince Joffrey]] and his siblings the fruit of incest, and claiming the crown as Robert's eldest surviving brother and rightful heir. With neither proof, nor the support or love of nobles and commons alike, his proclamation ended as little more than tavern gossip.{{Ref|aCoK|10}}

===Battling Renly===
Even before Stannis' ravens had taken wing with his claim, his younger brother [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] had ridden from King's Landing to [[Highgarden]], where he wed the daughter of [[Mace Tyrell|Lord Tyrell]] and claimed the crown for himself. For Stannis, this was blatant treason. Moreover, Stannis was infuriated with the knowledge that the [[the Stormlands]] had thrown in with Renly, despite the fact that Stannis, as the eldest son of House Baratheon, should have held claim to the loyalty of his House's ancestral seat. Unwilling to let such treachery pass, when Stannis at last set out from Dragonstone to war, he made not for King's Landing, but Storm's End.{{Ref|aCoK|22}}

Stannis laid siege to the coastal fortress, which was under the command of Ser [[Cortnay Penrose]], but all his might was but a meager thing against all the strength of storm and Reach at his brother's command. When Renly abandoned his march on King's Landing, bringing all his knights and mounted forces to lift the siege, Stannis was vastly outnumbered. However, before the battle could begin, Renly was slain by a shadow called forth by the Shadowbinder [[Melisandre]], an Asshai'i woman in Stannis' service.{{Ref|aCoK|33}}

With Renly dead, the greater part of the knights and lords who had been sworn to him submitted to the last Baratheon, chief among them [[House Florent]], relatives of Stannis' wife. About a quarter of the forces did not submit, and fled under the command of [[Loras Tyrell|Ser Loras Tyrell]] back to [[Bitterbridge]], where almost 80,000 men of Renly's army waited with his widowed Tyrell queen.{{Ref|aCoK|36}}{{Ref|aCoK|44}} Ser Loras captured the knights Stannis sent to try and recruit the Stormlands infantry still encamped at Bitterbridge.

==Prelude==
Unaware of the capture of Ser Parmen Crane and Ser Erren Florent, Stannis' army now marched on King's Landing. Reinforced with some of the strength of the Stormlands, King Stannis had almost twenty thousand men at his command, mostly knights and freeriders, against the few thousand gold cloaks of King's Landing's [[Gold Cloaks|City Watch]]. However, the city was guarded to the south by the [[Blackwater Rush]], and would require an amphibious assault to conquer. Stannis moved his host and fleet upon Kings Landing.

Under the direction of the acting Hand, [[Tyrion Lannister]], King's Landing meanwhile strengthened its defenses, doubling its city watch, burning the buildings outside the city walls and constructing a chain which would allow the defenders to close off the Blackwater Rush, as well as preparing ships loaded with wildfire. Tyrion sent out his [[Mountain clans]]men to harass Stannis's flanks in the [[Kingswood]].

Treacherous waters and inclement weather delayed Stannis's fleet on its northward journey from Storm's End. About a dozen ships were lost on the journey to [[Blackwater Bay]] and the troops on land suffered days of harassment from Tyrion's clansmen and skirmishers in the Kingswood, despite burning swaths of the forest trying to ferret them out.{{Ref|aCoK|52}} When Stannis's fleet passed the [[Merling Rock]].<ref>[[A Clash of Kings]], [[A Clash of Kings-Chapter 58|Chapter 58]], Davos</ref> Stannis went to command his troops on land and gave command of the fleet to Ser [[Imry Florent]], who commanded from Stannis's [[ships|galley]] the [[''Fury'']].

==The Battle==
===Battle on the River===

The fleet sailed up the Blackwater Rush with almost all their strength. Confident of his superior numbers, and knowing that the fleet of King's Landing could not hope to contest them, Ser Imry did not send scouts ahead, and recklessly attacked immediately, leaving only a contingent of mercenary galleys led by [[Salladhor Saan]] as rear guard guard out in the bay. The fleet was organized into ten battle lines composed of twenty ships each. The first two lines were to smash the small royal fleet, while the remaining ships were to land troops to attack the city.{{Ref|aCoK|58}}

Ser Imry's lack of caution proved disastrous when the Lannisters sprung a trap. When Stannis's fleet engaged with Joffrey's, they encountered ships loaded to bursting with [[wildfire]], a deadly accelerant , which burns even on water. Spreading downstream it has soon engulfed in flames the closely packed ships of both fleets, finding their retreat cut off by the massive chain that had been raised between two winch towers at the mouth of the river.

The wildfire unleashed a tremendous amount of damage, destroying Joffrey's small fleet and a large portion of Stannis's. However, a few of Stannis's ships had escaped the conflagration: eight ships managed to land troops to the northern bank, and forty or so galleys remained ready to row Stannis's main force across the river. The congestion of wrecks caught on the chain had unwittingly provided a bridge - albeit a burning, unstable one - for the army to cross.{{Ref|aCoK|58}}

===Attack on King's Landing===

The city itself was defended by some 6,000 gold cloaks, leavened with a few hundred mercenaries and knights from the court and the [[Crownlands|surrounding region]]. As acting Hand of the King, command of the defense was taken by [[Tyrion Lannister]].{{Ref|aCoK|49}}

To avoid being overwhelmed, Tyrion tasked several groups of mounted men-at-arms, along with what few knights the city had, to harry Stannis' forces as they came ashore. Under the command of [[Sandor Clegane]] and [[Balon Swann|Ser Balon Swann]] of the [[Kingsguard]], they managed to help stem the tide, but as the battle dragged on, they suffered grievous casualties. Battering rams had been brought to bear on at least two of the city's gates, and when the wildfire raging across the river finally robbed Clegane of his courage, the refusal of the fearsome Hound to lead any more sorties threatened to break the morale of the defenders.

Realizing that they had to drive off the rams and hold the river at all costs, Tyrion made to lead the next sortie himself. Shamed into action by the dwarf's display of courage, the Kingslanders rallied to clear the riverbank one last time; they managed to disperse the attackers and make for the Mud Gate.{{Ref|aCoK|59}} Tyrion took the fight to the riverfront as they observed a large group of Stannis's soldiers crossing over the bridge of ship wreckage in the river. However, in the fighting amidst the wreckage of the collapsing bridge of boats, Tyrion was severely wounded at the hands of [[Mandon Moore|Ser Mandon Moore]] of the Kingsguard, who had been Tyrion's sworn shield throughout the battle.{{Ref|aCoK|61}}

After the loss of the Hand, the defenders retreated within the city walls, freeing Stannis to transport enough men over the river to assault the city in earnest. Ser [[Guyard Morrigen]] led the van. Queen [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]], fearing for her son, had King Joffrey withdraw to the [[Red Keep]] from amongst the men{{Ref|aCoK|62}}; as soon as the defenders saw the king retire, their morale broke and they began throwing down their spears and fled by the hundreds leaving the walls, killing their officers, including [[Jacelyn Bywater|Ser Jacelyn Bywater]], in the process. At this point the battle seemed to be lost.{{Ref|aSoS|4}}

===Arrival of Tywin Lannister===

Though Stannis' army was still split across the Blackwater, victory was now within his grasp. Just as quickly as the tide had turned in his favor, however, it was turned again by the sudden appearance of foes on his flanks. Unknown to either the attackers or the defenders, the Lannisters and the Tyrells had secured an alliance and Renly's former army has marched from Bitterbridge, uniting with Lord [[Tywin Lannister]]'s own host in the shadow of the Kingswood.{{Ref|aCoK|62}} The huge force included commanders such as [[Randyll Tarly]], who led the center.

Tyrion's wildlings in the Kingswood created a blind spot for Stannis by killing his outriders and scouts, and allowed Tywin to take Stannis's smaller and partially crossed host unaware from the rear. The van of Tywin's army was led by [[Garlan Tyrell|Ser Garlan Tyrell]], dressed in the ornate and unmistakable armor of the late Renly Baratheon, leading to confusion and disorder amongst Stannis' ranks, and even stories that Renly had risen from the dead and fought as a ghost for Joffrey. Divided, surprised, and outnumbered, Stannis' host broke quickly, with many of his lords bannermen switching allegiance mid-battle, proving as fickle to Stannis as they had to the deceased Renly. The [[Rolland Storm|Bastard of Nightsong]] led a rearguard action that allowed perhaps two thousand Stannis loyalists, chiefly Florents, to escape, along with Stannis himself on the [[Lys]]ene galleys which had been left in Blackwater Bay while the rest of the fleet had burned.{{Ref|aSoS|4}}

==Aftermath==
Despite Stannis' survival, the battle was a decisive defeat for House Baratheon of Dragonstone, as he was able to retreat with only 2,000 swords and a token fleet to Dragonstone. The captured Stormlords bent the knee to King Joffrey. With the newly forged Tyrell alliance, the Lannisters now controlled the whole south and west, commanding overwhelming superiority of numbers in the field. The end of the war now seems close. Meanwhile most of the credit for the victory went to Tywin and the Tyrells, robbing Tyrion of his greatest achievement.

==Synopsis==
[[Varys]] shows [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] a message from [[Winterfell]] that reveals [[Bran Stark|Bran]] and [[Rickon Stark|Rickon]] were killed at the hands of [[Theon Greyjoy]]. Tyrion goes to tell [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] the news, wanting very much to see her reaction. She tells him she could have frightened Bran into silence, but [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]] reacted without thinking. Tyrion tells her that they must take good care of [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]], because with two of her sons dead, Lady [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] might decide to kill Jaime. Cersei warns him that he trusts Varys too much, telling him that the Spider feeds them all information to make them think they would be helpless without him. She reveals that Varys told her Tyrion meant to take [[Sandor Clegane|the Hound]] from [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey]], and Tyrion explains he needs Sandor Clegane and Ser [[Balon Swann]] to lead sorties in the upcoming battle. Tyrion also informs her he means to give Joffrey a small command far out of the main fighting, so that the men can see their King leading them.

Cersei then springs a surprise on Tyrion, bringing out who she thinks is Tyrion’s whore, [[Alayaya]]. The girl has been badly beaten, and the Queen reveals she did this because [[House Lannister|a Lannister]] always pays her debts, and Tyrion has been conspiring against her since he arrived. Tyrion pretends to be horrified, but is relieved that his sister had not found [[Shae]]. Cersei tells him the whore will not be harmed so long as [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]] remains safe, but Tyrion bluffs by saying he will have Tommen treated the same way the girl is. Alayaya does not give Tyrion away, and goes along with the whole thing. Tyrion then threatens to pay Cersei back for what she did, when she least expects it. Having lost, the Queen shouts at him to get out. He finds Shae in his room, having come through the secret passage, but she was blindfolded by Varys and does not know where the entrance lies.

[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] learns from [[Lancel Lannister|Lancel]] that [[Cersei Lannister|the Queen]] intends to hide [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]] away at [[Rosby]] under the care of Lord [[Gyles Rosby|Gyles]]. Tyrion is disturbed that [[Varys]] had not learned of this, or had decided not to inform him. Later, Tyrion has [[Bronn]] deliver word to Ser [[Jacelyn Bywater|Jacelyn]], commanding him to take fifty men and capture Lord Gyles's party, and to expel the garrison and keep Tommen safe at Rosby. He does not want Lord Rosby hurt, nor any killing done in front of Tommen. For this, Ser Jacelyn will earn a lordship. Tyrion then sets out for [[Chataya]]’s, but then abandons his patience and rides directly to [[Shae]]’s mansion. He finds her listening to [[Symon|a singer]], and has the man expelled and sworn to silence. When one of the begging brothers appears, Shae recognizes him as Lord Varys. The Spider informs Tyrion that [[Storm's End]] has fallen and that [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]] is now marching on [[King's Landing]].

Alone, Shae asks Tyrion to make her his lady in court, and even suggests he kill Cersei, but Tyrion tells her, "The man who kills his own blood is cursed forever in the sight of gods and men." When Tyrion mentions taking her to the [[Red Keep]] and hiding her in the kitchens, Shae balks, and mocks him for being afraid of [[Tywin Lannister|his father]]. Tyrion slaps her in the face, telling her never to mock him again. Feeling remorseful, he tells her the story of [[Tysha]] and his father’s wrath. He departs to meet Varys at the stables, and the eunuch suggests that Shae be placed as a maidservant to Lady [[Tanda Stokeworth|Tanda]]’s daughter [[Lollys Stokeworth|Lollys]]. Shae would then be able to access the [[Tower of the Hand]] through a secret passage, which Tyrion is surprised to learn exists. Varys then attempts to tell Tyrion how Ser [[Cortnay Penrose|Cortnay]] died, and when he suggests it was magic, Tyrion disbelieves him. Varys then tells a story of how he came to be a eunuch: that he was a member of a mummers’ troupe, and that one day in [[Myr]] a certain man bought Varys from his master. The sorcerer castrated Varys, and burned the parts, creating a blue flame from which a voice spoke in a language he didn’t comprehend. Varys claims he has hated magic since that day, and means to see Stannis dead if the man practiced magic. Tyrion is somewhat skeptical, beliving it more likely Stannis has hired a skilled assassin from the Free Cities, musing on how he used to dream of being rich enough one day to hire a [[Faceless Men|Faceless Man]] to kill his sister. Tyrion's greater concern is that Stannis is now bringing his army to bear against King's Landing, that he is the only one standing in the way of Stannis's victory and that, with hatred for House Lannister and himself in particular at its highest, defeating Stannis seems unlikely.

[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] was up late at night reading, when [[Podrick Payne|Pod]] brings word that his cousin Ser [[Lancel Lannister|Lancel]] is outside demanding to see him. Lancel, under orders from Cersei, commands Tyrion to release [[Pycelle]] in the name of [[Joffrey Lannister|the king]] and also relays Cersei's demand that Ser [[Jacelyn Bywater]] be stripped of his comission and imprisoned (leading Tyrion to realise Bywater has already refused to obey the command to free Pycelle). When he threatens Tyrion, the dwarf retorts, "I’ll hear no warnings from you, boy." Lancel corrects him that he is a knight, and starts to reach for his sword, but Tyrion angrily threatens that with one word, he could have [[Shagga]] kill Lancel "With an axe, not a wineskin" - revealing his knowledge of Lancel's part in Robert's death. He asks Lancel if he was knighted before or after [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] took him into her bed. Lancel is shocked, and when Tyrion bluffs that he will inform Joffrey that Lancel killed [[Robert Baratheon|his father]] so he could bed his mother, Lancel's courage collapses. Lancel begs for mercy and Tyrion commands him to continue to serve his sister, but report all he sees and hears to him. Tyrion promises he will release Pycelle, and that Cersei can keep him as a pet or send him to the wall, but he is stripped of his position on the council and as [[Grand Maester]]. Tyrion warns Lancel that he wants no more nephews, so he should watch where his seed falls. Tyrion feels a little remorse for the way he and Cersei are using Lancel, musing that if Lancel doesn't die in the war, he will never survive [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]]'s return to [[King's Landing]], the only question being whether Jaime will kill Lancel in a jealous rage, or Cersei kill him to keep Jaime from finding out (he predicts it will be Cersei).

Later, as he rides for [[Chataya's brothel]], Tyrion reflects on the Lords [[Jon Arryn|Arryn]] and [[Eddard Stark|Stark]], and how their nobility led to their downfall at his sister’s hands. But Tyrion knows how to play her game and beat her. Later, with [[Shae]], Tyrion feels like this is his place, holding all the power at court.

[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] enters [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]]’s chambers to tell her that [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]] has landed, but is besieging [[Storm's End]] and will soon battle his brother [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]]. Cersei is overjoyed by the news, and even hugs Tyrion. Tyrion proposes a toast and slips some powder into her glass. The next day, the Queen is sick, and Tyrion is able to treat with Ser [[Cleos Frey|Cleos]] and take care of court business without her interference. As Tyrion presides as Hand in the courtroom, we learn for the first time that Tyrion’s cousin [[Tyrek Lannister|Tyrek]] has wed the infant Lady [[Ermesande Hayford|Ermesande]], and is being mocked as "Wet Nurse". Tyrion’s counter-terms put forth to his cousin Ser Cleos are equally absurd as [[Robb Stark|Robb]]’s were, and Tyrion does not reveal to Ser Cleos that they do not have [[Arya Stark|Arya]] captive, as the northeners seem to think. He does send [[Eddard Stark|Eddard]]’s bones back to [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] and Robb however. Tyrion then commands [[Vylarr]] to accompany Ser Cleos to [[Riverrun]] as an honor guard, getting rid of one of his sister’s men. As court is about to be adjourned, Ser [[Alliser Thorne|Alliser]] comes forth, but the severed hand of [[Jafer Flowers]] has rotted away, and he is mocked. Still, Tyrion hears a ring of truth in Thorne’s word of wights, and allows him the pick of the city dungeons.

[[Petyr Baelish|Littlefinger]] then confronts Tyrion, angry he had been lied to about [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] being promised to [[Robert Arryn]], when she is instead to be sent off to wed [[Trystane Martell]]. Littlefinger warns Tyrion, "Leave me out of your next deception", and Tyrion thinks to himself, only if you’ll do the same for me. [[Varys]] then speaks to Tyrion, aware of the Hand’s planned attempt to free [[Jaime Lannister|his brother]] by sending four thieves with Ser Cleos’ party.

At midnight, Tyrion invades Grand Maester [[Pycelle]]’s solar with [[Timett]] and [[Shagga]]. They find a young serving girl in the Grand Maester’s bed, and send her away. Pycelle pleads with Tyrion that he never deceived him, that he is a true servant of House Lannister. He tries to place the blame on Varys, and then Littlefinger, but Tyrion reveals that his ruse was designed to expose one of them as Cersei's spy, and it was Pycelle who told Cersei his plan to send Myrcella to Prince Doran. Tyrion has Shagga chop off Pycelle’s beard, and threatens to unman him. Pycelle reveals it was he who advised King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys]] to [[Sack of King's Landing|open the gates]] for Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]]’s army, and how he had hoped Tywin, whom he idolises, would become king.

Tyrion then asks him how many he has betrayed: Aerys, [[Eddard Stark]], himself, King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]], [[Jon Arryn]], Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]]? Pycelle pleads that Robert was a wretched king, that [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] was plotting to bring [[Mace Tyrell]]’s [[Margaery Tyrell|daughter]] to court and have Cersei supplanted as Queen. When Pycelle goes up to the rookery, Tyrion looks at Pycelle’s potions, and steals one. Tyrion deliberately fans the Grand Maester's curiosity about the letters by pointedly refusing to reveal their contents. As Tyrion takes his leave, he thinks to himself "one". Outside, [[Bronn]] is selecting recruits and sellswords, and points out a hedge knight named [[Tallad]] as the best of the lot. Bronn warns Tyrion of mobs gathering in the streets, and tells him a black brother named Ser [[Alliser Thorne|Alliser]] is demanding an audience, carrying a dismembered hand in a jar. Tyrion, who remembers and dislikes Thorne from his trip to the Wall, postpones having to see him.

[[Petyr Baelish|Littlefinger]] visits later. Tyrion comments on his Valyrian steel dagger, knowing it is the weapon Littlefinger used to frame him for the attempted assassination of Bran Stark. Baelish teases him by offering it to him, making no attempt to apologise for the anguish his lie caused. Tyrion reflects that Baelish's position as [[Master of Coin]] is too secure to dispose of him, even for his treachery. Instead, Tyrion sets Lord Baelish up by offering him lordship of [[Harrenhal]] if he brings a message to Lady [[Lysa Arryn]], whose maidenhead Petyr has boasted of taking. Tyrion tells him he will offer her Lord Arryn’s true murderer (whose identity Littlefinger is quite curious to know), and his niece [[Myrcella Baratheon|Myrcella]] as a ward to be betrothed to Lord [[Robert Arryn|Robert]]. Littlefinger is too greedy to pass up such a great opportunity and agrees to deliver the message. Tyrion thinks "two".

Afterwards, [[Varys]] arrives and is aware of Tyrion’s proposal to Littlefinger. He then puzzles out most of Tyrion’s offer to Prince [[Doran Martell]]: a seat on the [[Small Council]], Tyrion’s nephew [[Tommen Baratheon|Tommen]] as ward, and the head of Ser [[Gregor Clegane]] in revenge for the murder of Prince Doran's sister [[Elia Martell|Elia]]. When Varys asks what Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]] would think, Tyrion replies, "My father would be the first to tell you that fifty thousand Dornishmen are worth one rabid dog." ==Expedition beyond the Wall==
Gared went on an expedition with [[Will]] and Ser [[Waymar Royce]], who commanded them. They followed a group of wildling raiders. During the night they caught up with them. Will sneaked near to gather information. He did not see any movement and reported that the wildlings were dead, probably killed by the cold. Gared tried to persuade Royce to head back to the Wall but without luck. The three men went to search the corpses to discover what had killed them. It could not have been the cold, as the Wall was weeping when they left.

Will and Ser Waymar walked the last part while Gared remained with the horses. They could not find the bodies. Will climbed a tree to look for them. Suddenly Ser Waymar was attacked and killed by the [[Others]], a group of supposedly mythical creatures. Will stayed in the trees until he was sure that the Others had left. When Will went down he was attacked and killed by Ser Waymar, who had been turned into an [[Others#Wights|wight]].<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Prologue|Prologue]]</ref>

It is not how much of this Gared had seen, but he apparently fled south. He did not rejoin his brothers at the Wall and so was seen as a deserter. Gared was arrested south of the [[Wall]] outside a small holdfast and later questioned and sentenced to death by Lord [[Eddard Stark]]. Also present on the day of his death were [[Bran Stark|Bran]], [[Robb Stark|Robb]], [[Jon Snow|Jon]], [[Theon Greyjoy]], and [[Jory Cassel]]. Before the events in the [[A Song of Ice and Fire|Novel]], the Others had supposedly not been seen for many thousand years. So far the Others have appeared in the flesh only twice in the whole saga and their purpose remains unknown at this time.

According to legend, the Others first appeared during a winter that lasted a generation and a period of darkness known as [[the Long Night]]. Eventually they were defeated, supposedly by the [[Night's Watch]] and [[The Wall]] may have been raised as a defence against them. In apparent contradiction the [[Night's King]] appears to have married a White Walker, but after he was defeated the Others are not heard of again and became regarded south of the Wall as nothing more than fairy tales to frighten the little children.

The Others' first appearance in the saga is in the [[A Game of Thrones-Prologue|Prologue]] of the [[A Game of Thrones|first book]], killing two rangers of the [[Night's Watch]]. Craster sacrifices his infant sons to the Others, and at least one of his wives believes those sons have become White Walkers.

==Characteristics==

The Others appear in the prologue to AGoT as tall and gaunt with flesh pale as milk and blue eyes, deeper and bluer than human eyes, burning like ice, while the White Walker who married the Night's King is similarly described as having skin as pale as the moon and eyes like blue stars. They wear reflective armor that shifts in color with every step rather like the stealth armor once said to have been worn by the Children of the Forest. They appear to be superior swordsmen, wielding thin crystal swords said to be so cold as to shatter any object they touch, including the steel blades favoured by the Night's Watch.{{Ref|aGoT|Prologue}} Their [[languages|language]] is unknown, although it may be the [[Old Tongue]]. When one spoke in the prologue his voice was said to sound like the cracking of ice, but this was probably a figure of speech. The wildlings believe the Others and their Wights can smell life, or rather its warmth.

The old stories reveal uncertainty whether the Others come when it is cold or that it becomes cold when they appear, during snowstorms or mist and melt away when the skies clear. They hide from the light of the sun and emerge at night; although once again some stories claim that their coming brings the night. There are tales of their riding the corpses of dead animals such as bears, direwolves, mammoths, and horses, and can be accompanied by "ice spiders" as big as hounds.<ref>[[A Feast for Crows]], p80</ref>

[[Melisandre]] thinks that Others are servants of the [[Great Other]], allegedly an evil god of darkness, cold, and death who wages eternal war against [[R'hllor]].

===Weakness===
The Others have a few known weaknesses that are recorded in ancient texts. One is obsidian, otherwise called [[dragonglass]] or "frozen fire". When [[Samwell Tarly]] accidentally stabbed an Other with an obsidian dagger, its flesh and bones melted away leaving only an icy puddle. Ancient texts also record a weakness to "dragonsteel", which several have taken to be [[Valyrian steel]]. [[Mance Rayder]] expressed belief that magic wards in the Wall prevent the Others from crossing into the Seven Kingdoms.

According to legend, the Others first appeared during a winter that lasted a generation and a period of darkness known as [[the Long Night]]. Eventually they were defeated, supposedly by the [[Night's Watch]] and [[The Wall]] may have been raised as a defence against them. In apparent contradiction the [[Night's King]] appears to have married a White Walker, but after he was defeated the Others are not heard of again and became regarded south of the Wall as nothing more than fairy tales to frighten the little children.

The Others' first appearance in the saga is in the [[A Game of Thrones-Prologue|Prologue]] of the [[A Game of Thrones|first book]], killing two rangers of the [[Night's Watch]]. Craster sacrifices his infant sons to the Others, and at least one of his wives believes those sons have become White Walkers.

The Others appear in the prologue to AGoT as tall and gaunt with flesh pale as milk and blue eyes, deeper and bluer than human eyes, burning like ice, while the White Walker who married the Night's King is similarly described as having skin as pale as the moon and eyes like blue stars. They wear reflective armor that shifts in color with every step rather like the stealth armor once said to have been worn by the Children of the Forest. They appear to be superior swordsmen, wielding thin crystal swords said to be so cold as to shatter any object they touch, including the steel blades favoured by the Night's Watch.{{Ref|aGoT|Prologue}} Their [[languages|language]] is unknown, although it may be the [[Old Tongue]]. Chett got so angry that he killed her. He was caught by one of Lord [[Walder Frey]]'s bastards, apparently [[Walder Rivers]], and he was sent to the [[Wall]].

At the Wall, Chett was assigned to the [[Night's Watch#Stewards|Stewards]]. His job was to care for the ravens and old [[Maester Aemon]] with [[Clydas]]. * [[Grubbs]] and [[Aethan]]; the men who had drawn watch
* [[Dywen]] and [[Bannen]] to prevent the deserters from being tracked
* And [[Samwell Tarly]] to prevent a raven with the message of what they had done reaching the Wall.

Chett was to kill Samwell Tarly. After the killings he would set his dogs free. The dogs would frighten the horses, whose lines had been cut and run them off. Chett had not fed the dogs for a few days so they would be extra fierce. In the confusion that would follow, the deserters could run off with the remaining horses and the food they had horded.<ref>[[A Storm of Swords]], [[A Storm of Swords-Prologue|Prologue]]</ref>

A few hours before they would set their plan into action it began to snow. Chett realized that in fresh snow they could be easily followed and could not make speed so he canceled the plan. Instead, he decided to kill Samwell. This plan failed as well. At the moment Chett had found Samwell, a signal was blown that [[Others]] were sighted. The nobles went and were immediately murdered with their sons by Aerys. As was his right he demanded a trial by combat. He had Rickard burned by lighting a fire beneath him while Rickard was dressed in his armor. Brandon was made to watch his father die with a his noose around his neck and a sword just out of his reach. Balon Greyjoy tried to break away from the [[Seven Kingdoms]] and secure independence for the [[Iron Islands]] and restore their [[Old Way|traditions of old]], lost almost three hundred years before, during the [[War of Conquest]]. The rebellion was crushed and Balon Greyjoy was forced to surrender, cementing the hold of King [[Robert Baratheon]] on the [[Iron Throne]].

==Synopsis==
During an inspection of the stores [[Jon Snow|Jon]] is informed by [[Bowen Marsh]] and some other stewards that there is not enough
to feed the [[Night's Watch]], the [[wildlings]], and [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]]' men through the winter. He grimly orders a cut in rations, though he knows it will make him unpopular, and tells Marsh they will find a way to feed everyone.

He is then summoned to meet with Stannis. Despite his reluctance to be seen as partial to Stannis in the War of Five Kings, he advises him of the ways of the northern lords and offers him advice over how to win them over. He ignores the provocations of the [[Queen's men]] as Stannis tells him that he plans to leave the Wall and take on [[Ramsay Bolton]] at the [[Dreadfort]] unawares. Jon bluntly tells him that his plan will fail, earning more scorn from the Queen's Men. [[Rattleshirt]] taunts Jon, offering to sing for him and pointing out the red ruby on his iron cuff, and Stannis tells Jon that he is handing the wildling to Jon. [[Arnolf Karstark]] has been urging Stannis to attack the Dreadfort claiming that it is lightly garrisoned.

Stannis orders everyone out of the room except Melisandre and Jon. He again makes Jon the offer of [[Winterfell]], but Jon reminds him that Sansa currently the rightful heir, and that he cannot forsake his vows. Jon is still torn by his desire to see Stannis succeed ahead of the [[House Lannister|Lannisters]] or the [[Ironmen]], despite the fact that he is a sworn Black Brother and cannot pick sides in the wars to the south. He promises a source of more men to Stannis, if Stannis will let him keep the wildlings to occupy more of the forts at the Wall. Stannis agrees and Jon tells him of the petty lords of the mountains - [[House Flint of the mountains|House Flint]], [[House Wull]], [[House Norrey]], and [[House Liddle]]. Jon counsels Stannis to march for [[Deepwood Motte]] and defeat the Ironmen to rouse the north to his side. Stannis agrees, and Melisandre surprises Jon by telling him she will stay at the Wall. He ruefully reflects on how he has acquired a thousand wildlings whom he cannot feed.

Xaro is aware of the activities of the [[Sons of the Harpy]] and flatteringly tells Daenerys that he fears for her safety. He scoffs at her attempts to abolish slavery in Meereen and tells her that the [[Thirteen]] are willing to trade with the city - in slaves. He offers her thirteen galleys if she leaves for [[Westeros]] immediately. Dany tells him she will have her men inspect the ships, and refuses his feigned advances to her.

The next day at court, she refuses the desperate pleas of [[Ghael|Lord Ghael]] to defend [[Astapor]] against [[Yunkai]]. The envoy spits at her and is thrown out by [[Strong Belwas]]. After assembling her council to hear the report of Admiral [[Groleo]], she decides she cannot abandon Meereen to Yunkai'i. When she summons Xaro to tell him, his obsequiousness vanishes. He tells her she will die screaming and that he should have killed her in Qarth. She has him thrown out of the palace, but the next day an emissary gives her a bloody glove - the Qartheen have declared war.

==Synopsis==
The chapter begins from the perspective of a man warged into a wolf. The [[warg]] leads a small pack on a hunt. They hunt wildling fugitives and kill them.

After the kill the warg returns to his human body. He is [[Varamyr]] Sixskins and is seriously wounded. Like other wildlings, he had fled after [[Battle of Castle Black|their defeat]] at Castle Black. Varamyr burned when [[Orell|his eagle]] was killed and he lost his cloaks and rings. After he robbed a dead woman of her cloak, her son stabbed him. His companion, Thistle, has sewn the wound together but it is too serious and Varamyr knows he is dying.

He thinks back over his youth when he was still called Lump. As a youth he had warged into one of this father's dogs. The dogs killed [[Bump]], his little brother, and Varamyr remembers his brother looking at him and knowing. . . Because his father did not know which dog had killed Bump, he killed them all. When the last dog was killed, Lump - who was warged in him - screamed, which made his father understand his son's ability. His parents then brought Lump to Haggon, another skin-changer. Haggon raised Lump and taught him a lot about skin-changers, although Lump did not adopt his morals, particularly regarding what Haggon describes as abominations: eating the flesh of man while warged inside an animal, mating with a beast while warged inside one, and warging into a human. When Haggon died, Varamyr drove him out of his wolf Greyskin to claim the wolf for himself.

Later Varamyr adopted more animals and became Varamyr Sixskins. He established himself as a kind of lord, taking tribute in food and using his animals to bring him women from nearby villages.

Varamyr wakes up from his memories when Thistle returns. As he knows that his body is dying, he turns on his companion to take over her body. She struggles and eventually manages to escape his control. As he dies, he half regrets trying to take over Thistles body, but also half regrets failing at that. He awakens in the body of one of his wolves. Later his pack discovers Thistle. Frozen blood clings to her - she has become a [[Wight]]. As her blue eyes stare into his wolf eyes he knows she sees him. . .

Merrett served with his mother's relative Lord [[Sumner Crakehall]] as a page and later a squire. Like many Crakehall descendants, he was known for his strength and robustness. During this time he knew [[Jaime Lannister]] although the two were not very close because of Merret's habits of bullying others, which was not to Jaime's liking.{{Ref|aFfC|30}}

The downfall in his life began with the expedition against the [[Kingswood Brotherhood]].
First he spread a pox throughout the camp and later he was captured by [[Wenda]] the White Fawn, and was branded with her mark, the fawn.{{Ref|aFfC|30}} During his release, he was hit with a mace that left him insensible for a week. As a result, he suffered immense pain whenever he was hit in the head, and generally suffering extreme headaches for which he drank excessively to numb the pain. He was never knighted because of his injuries. Due to his injuries, he is mocked as Merrett Muttonhead by his father.{{Ref|aSoS|Epilogue}}

After the Red Wedding, the [[Brotherhood Without Banners]] kidnapped [[Petyr Frey]]. Merrett volunteered to deliver the ransom. He hoped to gain favour by Petyr who stood high in the line of succession for the lordship of the Twins. He found that the Brotherhood had already hanged Petyr for his involvement in the Red Wedding. They took the ransom and prepared to hang Merrett as well. When Merrett protested his innocence to the Red Wedding, the Brotherhood told him they had a witness. He offers her thirteen galleys if she leaves for [[Westeros]] immediately. Dany tells him she will have her men inspect the ships, and refuses his feigned advances to her.

The next day at court, she refuses the desperate pleas of [[Lord Ghael]] to defend [[Astapor]] against [[Yunkai]]. The envoy spits at her and is thrown out by [[Strong Belwas]]. After assembling her council to hear the report of Admiral [[Groleo]], she decides she cannot abandon Meereen to Yunkai'i. When she summons Xaro to tell him, his obsequiousness he tells her she will die screaming and that he should have killed her in Qarth. [[Jon Snow|Jon]] finds [[Samwell Tarly|Sam]] in the basement library of the [[Night's Watch]], a treasure trove with thousands of ancient books and accounts. Sam shows Jon the accounts of a ranger from before [[War of Conquest|the Conquest]], who wrote that they had fought [[Giants]] beyond [[the Wall]], and even traded with the [[Children of the Forest]]. Sam also found a book about the language of the Children and other works that even the [[Citadel]] doesn’t have.

Sam is afraid to go with the expedition beyond the Wall, but Jon reassures him that [[Jeor Mormont|Mormont]] is taking 200 men, and they will be met by 100 more from the [[Shadow Tower]] under the command of [[Qhorin Halfhand]]. They depart to bring the maps to the Lord Commander. Jon meets [[Donal Noye]] on the way who tells that [[Robb Stark|Robb]] was crowned. Noye reveals that he had forged King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert’s]] warhammer.

In the Lord Commander’s chambers, [[Thoren Smallwood]] is demanding that he should have the command on the march, and that Mormont should stay at Castle Black. Mormont dismisses him, telling him he is not First Ranger until [[Benjen Stark]] is found dead. It will be the Lord Commander’s decision who replaces him. Sam gives Mormont the maps, and tells him [[Aemon Targaryen|Maester Aemon]] is choosing the ravens that will go with them.

Mormont tells Jon Maester Aemon's story. He was the third son of [[Maekar I Targaryen]], who was himself the fourth son of King [[Daeron II]]. King Daeron, Maester Aemon’s grandfather, sent him to the Citadel when he was a boy. The Crown Prince, [[Baelor Targaryen|Baelor]] died in a tourney mishap, and his two sons died in [[The Great Spring Sickness]] along with King Daeron, so the King’s second son [[Aerys I]] succeeded him. After King Aerys I died without issue, the crown passed to Maekar. King Maekar was killed in battle against an outlaw lord, and his two eldest sons, [[Daeron Targaryen|Daeron]] and [[Aerion Targaryen|Aerion]], were already dead.

A [[Great Council]] was convened to decide on the succession. It passed over Aerion’s infant son and then offered the throne to Aemon. Maester Aemon refused, saying he swore a vow to serve even though the [[High Septon]] offered to absolve him. His younger brother, [[Aegon V]] was then named King. He was called "the Unlikely" because as the fourth son of a fourth son he was very unlikely to become king. Maester Aemon knew that those who would be unsatisfied which his brother's rule would try to use him. To prevent this he became a member of the Night's Watch.

Mormont explains to Jon why he spoke of this. Both Jon and Maester Aemon have something in common, a king for a brother and a humble life for themselves as brothers of the Night's Watch. Jon admits that he is troubled by the difference in his destiny compared to that of his royal half-brother but swears he will keep his vows.

For centuries, the Targaryens ruled the island quietly. After the Doom, Aegon the Conqueror plotted his conquest of Westeros from the castle. Once the Targaryens created King's Landing as the capital of the [[Seven Kingdoms]], Dragonstone became the seat of the [[w:heir apparent|heir apparent]], who was styled Prince of Dragonstone.

During [[Robert's Rebellion]], the castle became the last haven of the remaining Targaryens. Rhaella and Viserys were evacuated there before King's Landing fell to the rebels. As rebel forces prepared to lay siege to Dragonstone, the last scions of House Targaryen fled the castle for [[Braavos]].

After the war, the castle passed to [[Stannis Baratheon]]. Stannis resented the castle because its lands were far poorer than those of Storm's End, which he felt was his due as heir of House Baratheon. He considered the castle to be a insult, though Robert could have simply been continuing the Targaryen tradition of placing the heir to the throne at Dragonstone.

During the [[War of the Five Kings]], the poor lands of Dragonstone gave Stannis few supporters for his claim to the throne. After his defeat at the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], he returned there to plot his next move. After he left to help the [[Night's Watch]], forces loyal to King [[Tommen Baratheon]] laid siege to the castle. Cersei Lannister manipulated [[Loras Tyrell]] into forcing a quick end to the siege. He reportedly did so, turning what could have been a peaceful surrender into a bloodbath and becoming grievously wounded in the process.

[[Septa Lemore]] bathes every morning in the river, but she is not as virginal as she appears - Tyrion notices that she has stretch marks from childbirth. After they all break their fast with [[Yandry]] and [[Ysilla]] [[Rolly Duckworth|Duck]] begins training purple-eyed Young Griff with swords. Griff shoulder-charges Duck into the river, and when Tyrion laughs at him he chucks him overboard. Although Tyrion is dressed in motley and plays the fool with the men, Griff has him engaged in a serious task: writing down all he knows of [[dragon]]s from his extensive reading. In the afternoon Tyrion joins [[Haldon]] Halfmaester as he educates Young Griff on geometry, languages and history. After the lesson Tyrion and Haldon settle down for a game of [[cyvasse]].

Tyrion has yet to beat Hugor and challenges him to a wager. Since he has no coin, he wants to wager information. Haldon takes the bet only to lose. We do not learn what information Tyrion won. Back on deck, as they pass by the ruins of [[Ny Sar]] Tyrion witnesses the emergence of a gigantic turtle from the water - the [[Old Man of the River]]. He thinks to himself that gods and wonders always appear to attend the birth of kings.

Around eighty yards from the cave entrance, Summer stops at a steep stretch of unbroken snow. Bran, on Hodor's back, knows something is wrong. Coldhands continues to climb so Hodor follows him. He glimpses a fire in the cave entrance when suddenly Hodor trips and falls. A [[wight]] bursts from the snow, grasping his leg. Bran falls from his basket as Hodor and the wight struggle, and soon he is surrounded by dead men emerging from under the snow with pale flesh and black hands. Wights grab Coldhands as well, and Bran is grabbed as he tries to warn Jojen and Meera further down the slope. Summer tears off the arm and throat of the wight assaulting Bran and he begins to crawl the fifty yards to the cave.

Bran wargs into Hodor to help him fight off the wights. Meera reaches him as he waves her up the hill and grabs Jojen. Someone sets the wights on fire. Bran awakens in the cave before a [[Children of the Forest|Child of the Forest]]. She takes them down into the cave, but Coldhands can't follow them due to the ward on the cave against dead things. They go deeper, underneath roots and across a floor of bones, til they reach a skeletal body sat on a throne made of roots - the [[three-eyed crow]], the last [[greenseer]].

Furious, Dany orders the Unsullied to restrict themselves to patrolling the walls, and imposes a blood tax on the great families of Meereen to fund a new mixed force of freedmen and and shavepates to patrol the city streets under the control of Skahaz. The families of Zhak and Merreq are preparing to leave the city; the Queen orders that their wealth must remain behind, as well as some of their children in her custody.

That night, Dany offers Missandei the chance to return to [[Naath]], but she feels safer with her. Dreaming of [[Daario Naharis]], Dany hopes that the sellsword will remain loyal to her. Dany goes to take a bath on her terrace, when she is surprised by the voice of [[Quaithe]], speaking to her via some magic. "Hear me, Daenerys Targaryen. The [[glass candle]]s are burning. Melisandre proclaims to the assembled [[wildlings]] that Stannis is their true King, [[Azor Ahai]] reborn. Stannis draws [[Lightbringer]] which is blindingly bright, and promises all who serve him food, land and justice. The gates of the [[Wall]] are opened and most of the captive wildlings enter to kneel before Stannis, feeding the fire with fragments of [[weirwood]], pieces of the [[Old Gods]] to feed [[R'hllor]]'s fires.

[[Bowen Marsh]] thinks it is wrong to let thousands of wildlings south of the Wall, and would prefer to seal the gates and let the wildlings defend the northern side. Many of the men of the Night's Watch are also muttering against the perception that Jon has taken Stannis' side in the game of thrones. Jon denies this, but says that the outcome of the struggle is unclear following the death of [[Tywin Lannister]]. Jon shares a cup of wine with [[Clydas]], telling that [[Maester Aemon|Aemon]] had shown him a passage in the ''[[Jade Compendium]]'' describing [[Lightbringer]] as both bright and fearfully hot. I think that this was being discussed a little on the forum but I don't feel like searching for the right thread. I'm not sure I think your new in text citation format is better than the old way. For one I have gotten used to typing the old one out from habit, and for two the new way looks like a jumble of letters that mean nothing to me. I can't argue against you using it when making new references, but it just makes everything confusing if you start going back and altering the citations already in the page, at least until we can all conclusively agree on a format. :I see the idea you are going for, but someone (I don't remember who) decided to make the standard for references book name, chapter name for ADWD and future references. This was in an effort to eliminate the use of chapter numbers, as the chapters are not numbered in the books, and some people use the prologue as chapter one and others count the prologue as chapter zero. I support the reasoning behind this decision. I haven't noticed any ADWD references that you've changed, but what did you have in mind for that? I think the idea was also to go back and change AGOT - AFFC to eliminate the use of the chapter numbers. It just seems like a lot of work to go through and shorten the references now when the ultimate goal is to change them away from using the chapter numbers because they will again have to be altered when the first four books' chapter summaries are changed away from the number system. Maybe we should focus on fixing the system first, and then when past references are changed we could kill two birds with one stone and shorten the references as well as eliminate the chapter numbering system at the same time? Hi Mordin999, is category already complete? If not there may be a other way to get a list of houses without COA. Usually the only picture on House article is the COA. So we could make a custom made select that selects from the tables that the wiki software uses all entries (articles) that being House and for which there is no entry in the table that stores the links between article and image. It would require to get some knowledge about the tables and for Ran to store the query so it can be called by users. But in the end I think it is less time intensive then going through all house articles one by one. On board are the boy, [[Young Griff]], and his father, [[Griff]]. The older man reads a letter sent to him by Illyrio, telling of Tyrion's murder of his father. [[Quentyn Martell]], son of the Prince of [[Dorne]], is in [[Volantis]], disguised as a wineseller's servant. He and his servant are attempting to book a passage to [[Meereen]] aboard ship, but even in the massive port of Volantis they are unable to find a single ship willing to risk the trip to [[Slaver's Bay]] while there is war brewing. Quentyn is anxious trying to get to Daenerys in [[Meereen]] as his father commanded, intent on marrying her. He has heard that she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

Quentyn is accompanied by [[Gerris Drinkwater]], acting as his merchant master, and [[Archibald Yronwood]]. On the trip from Dorne they were attacked by corsairs from the [[Disputed Lands]], losing their Maester [[Kedry]], [[Willam Wells]] and his dear friend [[Cletus Yronwood]]. Quentyn feels their loss keenly, and feels in dire need of his missing maester's counsel.

Quentyn and Gerris meet with the captain of the ''Adventure'', a smuggler's ship, who only agrees to take them to Volantis if they are prepared to pay three times the normal fare - for each of them. Quentyn knows that the man simply plans to take their money and either kill them or enslave them the first chance he gets.

The pair debate whether they should give up their quest and return to Dorne, or attempt to travel to Meereen overland via the [[demon road]]. Quentyn is anxious not to have any more deaths on his conscience, but he feels his duty to Dorne and to his father is too important to turn back. They travel through the streets to the [[Merchant's House]] to meet with Archibald Yronwood. Along the way, they encounter a party of [[Windblown]] who are recruiting soldiers as they head to Yunkai to war against Astapor and Meereen. ==Synopsis==
[[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] has been smuggled out of [[Pentos]] inside the litter of [[Illyrio Mopatis]], on their way to the [[Rhoyne]]. Illyrio explains that Tyrion and a sellsword called [[Griff]] will meet [[Daenerys Targaryen|Daenerys]] in [[Volantis]], while he remains to "smooth the way" for them in Pentos. Illyrio tells Tyrion that Daenerys has need of cunning men such as him, but Tyrion is suspicious: why does Illyrio have a stake in helping Daenerys claim the [[Iron Throne]]? Instead of answering, the merchant tells of how when he first met her, Daenerys was young and fearful and her brother [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]] was foolish and greedy, and Mopatis had to post guards on her door to prevent her brother from entering her chambers and raping her before she was given to [[Khal Drogo]]. He recounts how she turned to Slaver's bay, conquering [[Astapor]], cowing [[Yunkai]] and sacking [[Meereen]]. He now expects her to make her way to Volantis - where she will meet Tyrion and Griff with enough forces to carry her to [[Westeros]].

Tyrion presses Illyrio, wanting to know why a slaver city like Volantis and a man such as Illyrio would want to assist Daenerys, and he says that her brother had promised him the position of [[master of coin]] and the castle of his choice. Tyrion also demands to know how he is friends with [[Varys]], and Illyrio tells him that the two of them were thieves together in Pentos - with Varys spying on and stealing other thieves, then passing them onto Illyrio, who would return the goods to their rightful owners for a fee. Varys trained a network of spies to - young boys and girls - to steel information, and eventually the two of them became influential enough that Illyrio was able to marry the daughter of the cousin of the Prince of Pentos, and Varys was sought by [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys the Mad]] in his paranoia for the post of [[master of whispers]].

Over several more days' travel through [[Andalos]], Illyrio tells Tyrion that he has managed to persuade the [[Golden Company]] to break their contract with [[Myr]] and instead accompany Daenerys, with the incentive that the company of exiles will be finally able to travel home. After Tyrion tells Illyrio the story of [[Hugor of the Hill]], he tells him that he had originally intended to become [[High Septon]] before he met and married [[Tysha]]. Illyrio likewise has a story of a [[Lys]]ene bed slave, Serra, his second wife, who ways killed by the [[grey plague]]. As they continue to travel, Tyrion's thoughts turn to [[Shae]], and to Tysha.

==Synopsis==
[[Bran Stark|Bran]] is making his way through the [[Haunted Forest]], in search of the [[three-eyed crow]], accompanied by the Reeds, [[Hodor]], and [[Coldhands]]. Bran skinchanges into [[Summer]] frequently, and even into Hodor, although Hodor seems to dislike the experience. Coldhands is riding on an elk and is accompanied by ravens. Jojen is becoming ill and weak.

Coldhands stops to deal with "foes" he refuses to name, backtracking while the others continue on. [[Meera Reed|Meera]] points out that they have never seems Coldhand's breath even in the icy weather - and he does not eat, or drink, or sleep. Bran says that Coldhands saved Sam and Gilly from [[wight]]s, so they must trust him.

Bran wargs into Summer in order to find an abandoned wildling village for shelter. As they rest Jojen refuses to eat despite his weakness, telling his sister that this is not the day he dies. All four of them are near starving, but they refrain from lighting a fire at Coldhand's instruction. Sleepless, Bran wargs into Summer on the hunt, who has found the corpses of five men - and the wolf pack that found them first. Summer/Bran squares off for a fight against the leader of the pack, seeing in his eyes that he is in fact a warg like him. Bran/Summer defeats the pack leader, making the pack his and giving him the choice parts of the dead men. The dead men are in black - men of the Night's Watch.

Bran awakens to a fire - Coldhands has killed a pig for them, and as the dawn is near he allows them to light a fire to roast them. Bran asks Coldhands, who fears the flames, what happened to the foes. Coldhands replies that they will not trouble him - he does not deny that they are dead at his hand. Only Jojen pays attention when Bran asks who they were - but he already knows they were men of the Night's Watch. Bran asks the ranger about his black hands, and he tells Bran that the blood runs into a man's extremities and congeals once he is dead. Meera demands to see his face, which he refuses. Bran notes that he could not pass beyond the Wall and its enchantments.

Meera asks who the three-eyed crow is and he replies "A friend. Dreamer, wizard, call him what you will. The last [[greenseer]]". Meera asks Jojen if he has dreamed this and he says they have come too far to go back now.
