Origin of 'Hodor';
Hodor may in fact be the name of the Great Other. Melisandre says his name must not be spoken, so few people, if anyone, would recognize the name if they heard it. Old Nan says that Hodor's name is really Walder, and that no one knows where he got 'Hodor' from. There is a fair amount of Norse Mythology (which GRRM may have been influenced by) suggesting the connection. For example; the Great Other is the god of the cold and dark, and in Norse Mythology, there is a guy named Hod/Hodur/Hoder that is the god of all things cold and dark.

Like most [[hedge knight]]s he probably travels about the realm looking for gainful employment. He is poor.

According to Ser Creighton, he did great carnage on the Blackwater and won a dozen ransoms. He slew Ser [[Herbert Bolling]] where he stood. Later, he again tells [[Brienne of Tarth]] that he had slain a dozen fearsome knights (that she has never heard of) during the [[Battle of the Blackwater]] and fought an epic battle with the [[Knight of the Red Chicken]].{{ref|affc|4}}

According to Ser Creighton singers sing of him and he is famous. Ser Creighton owes [[Naggle]] the innkeeper of the [[Old Stone Bridge]] seven silver stags - which he reminds Ser Creighton about when he arrives at the inn with Brienne. Ser Illifer then recognizes the arms of [[House Lothston]] and the [[hedge knight]]s chastise her for bearing them. Ser Illifer also realizes that she is the Maid o’ [[Tarth]], the one who opened [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]]’s royal throat and says so to Ser Creighton.

Brienne hotly denies that she slew King Renly and after she swears most sincerely by [[Faith of the Seven|the Seven]] that she did not kill him the hedge knights are satisfied, with Ser Creighton allowing that,

They give her the first watch. Later when trying to fall asleep Brienne finds it difficult to sleep as the risk of rape is always there for a woman. They break their fast with Ser Creighton regaling her with his exploits at the Blackwater. He allows that Ser Illifer had fought nobly in the battle too.

When they resume their journey the hedge knights fall in on either side of Brienne, like guards protecting some great lady, though she dwarfs both of them and is better armed and armored in the nonce. Brienne thinks to herself that it feels good to have companions on the road, even such as these two.

On the road they come across large group of poor fellows with the bones of holy men bound for [[King's Landing]] and exchange words with them. Ser Creighton wonders what sort of a man would slay a holy septon. Brienne thinks to herself that she knows [[Brave Companions|what sort]].

Three hours later they come upon another party struggling towards [[Duskendale]], a merchant named [[Hibald]], his serving men and a hedge knight in Hibald’s employ, Ser [[Shadrich]]. Ser Creighton suggests riding together as three blades are better than one. Brienne thinks to herself, ''four blades'' but holds her tongue. Hibald agrees.

As night gathers the party comes upon the [[Old Stone Bridge]] inn. Ser Creighton and Ser Illifer have no coin but Brienne offers to pay for the three of them. She pays the innkeeper for a room for herself and a second for her two companions. She orders goat for the hedge knights too since they had shared their trout with her.

As they sup in the common room Brienne listens to some of the gossip but retires when it turns to Ser [[Jaime Lannister]]. As she lies awake in her room she hears [[Hibald]] mount the stairs, and sometime later the [[knight]]s as well. Ser Creighton is again regaling someone with the tale of [[Knight of the Red Chicken]] as he goes by.

Once the inn is quiet [[Brienne of Tarth|Brienne]] gathers her things and heads out alone for [[Duskendale]], asking a silent pardon of Ser Creighton and Ser [[Illifer]] as she mounts her bay mare.

Daeron was the firstborn son and heir of Aegon III and [[Daenaera Velaryon|Daenaera]] of [[House Velaryon]], and was born in {{Date|143}}. He had a younger brother, [[Baelor I Targaryen|Baelor]], and three younger sisters, [[Daena Targaryen|Daena]], [[Rhaena Targaryen|Rhaena]] and [[Elaena Targaryen|Elaena]]. His father past away when Daeron was only fourteen and he was crowned King Daeron I, though at times he would be called the "Boy King". Daeron named his uncle [[Viserys II Targaryen|Viserys]] as his [[Hand of the King]], as his uncle had held the position for Aegon III as well.

Daeron had long felt that the continued independence of Dorne represented unfinished business for the [[House Targaryen]], and upon his ascension he vowed to rectify his ancestors' mistake. Upon taking the throne he set to [[Conquest of Dorne|conquer Dorne]], which he succeeded in, becoming the first Targaryen king to conquer Dorne and unite all [[Seven Kingdoms]] for the first time. Following his conquest he wrote the book ''[[Conquest of Dorne (Book)|Conquest of Dorne]]'' about his achievement.{{Ref|aSoS|54}} The book was known for its style and simplicity but in it Daeron exaggerated the numbers of his foes to make his conquest seem greater.

Unfortunately for him, Daeron's conquest did not last. It was undone in a fortnight when a clever trap killed the steward that Daeron had left to rule Dorne, Lord [[House Tyrell|Tyrell]]. His death sparked a great uprising that overthrew most of the conquest.{{Ref|aSoS|66}} Daeron lost fifty thousand men trying to hold Dorne, culminating in his own death during the uprising. However, Ser [[Otto Hightower]], the [[Hand of the King]] and Ser [[Criston Cole]], [[Lord Commander of the Kingsguard|Lord Commander]] of the [[Kingsguard]] and possibly the former lover of Rhaenyra, defied the king's will and instead crowned Rhaenyra's half-brother, Alicent's son [[Aegon II Targaryen|Aegon II]], who was ten years younger. This brought about a Targaryen civil war, known as the [[Dance of the Dragons]], in which dragonriders fought each other;{{Ref|aFfC|13}} during the war Rhaenyra rode her [[dragon]], [[Syrax]]. {{Ref|aDwD|8}}

At the time of her father's death, Rhaenyra was on Dragonstone awaiting the birth of her sixth child. The Green conspirators in [[King's Landing]] ensured that the news did not reach her until after all her supporters in the [[Red Keep]] were dead or imprisoned, and Aegon II's coronation had already occurred. When news did reach her, she went into a black fury and went into early labor, producing a deformed, stillborn [[Visenya Targaryen (daughter of Rhaenyra)|daughter]]. She blamed this tragedy on the enemies who had stolen her crown. After Ser [[Steffon Darklyn]] of the Kingsguard arrived on Dragonstone with some other Black supporters who had fled the Green coup, bringing her father's crown with them, Rhaenyra had her own coronation.

To gain more support to take the crown from her brother, Rhaenyra sent her son Jace on his dragon to treat with the [[House Arryn|Arryns]], [[House Manderly|Manderlys]], and [[House Stark|Starks]], and her son Luke to treat with Lord [[Borros Baratheon]] at [[Storm's End]]. Luke's mission was thought to be the safer, but he arrived at Storm's End to find Queen Alicent's younger son [[Aemond Targaryen|Aemond]] already there. Aemond, riding [[Vhagar]], killed Luke over [[Shipbreaker Bay]] as he attempted to leave after failing to gain Lord Borros' allegiance. The news of Luke's death devastated his mother.

Rhaenyra [[Fall of King's Landing|took the capital]] and sat in the throne for a brief time. Although Rhaenyra was in armor, Septon [[Eustace (Dance of the Dragons)|Eustace]]<ref>[http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/100284-spoilers-the-princess-and-the-queen-complete-spoilers-discussion/page-6#entry5178064 Ran discussing Eustace]</ref> claimed that those present witnessed the throne leaving several cuts on her legs and left hand. The dripping blood was taken as a sign that the throne had rejected her; her days as ruler would be few. Rhaenyra came to exact too much revenge on the denizens of King's Landing, and the smallfolk turned against her. She grew so cruel and vindictive that they named her "King [[Maegor I Targaryen|Maegor]] with Teats." After hearing of the [[Two Betrayers]], she grew paranoid and declared [[Addam Velaryon]], [[Corlys Velaryon]], and [[Nettles]] all traitors, a decision that alienated several of her allies.

Her [[Hand of the King|Hand of the Queen]], [[Corlys Velaryon]] alerted Addam who fled the capital, this led to the arrest of Corlys and the loss of [[House Velaryon]]. [[House Mooton]] changed its allegiance to [[Aegon II Targaryen|King Aegon]] after Rhaenyra sent them a letter commanding them to kill Nettles but the Mooton's refused to comply as the girl was under the protection of [[Guest right|guest right]]. After the [[Storming of the Dragonpit]] Rhaenyra fled King's Landing. Terrorized and despairing, she grew grey and haggard as she traveled past [[Rosby]], [[Stokeworth]], and [[Duskendale]]. Once she reached [[Dragonstone]], Rhaenyra was betrayed by Ser [[Alfred Broome]], whose men slew the remainder of her [[Queensguard]]. When Ramsay's mother came to the Dreadfort and asked for a servant to help her raise her unruly and wild son, Roose gave her "Reek" as a jape. However, Ramsay and Reek became inseparable and Roose often wonders if Reek corrupted Ramsay or if Ramsay corrupted Reek. According to Roose, Reek never had any training in arms fighting, though he was Ramsay's tutor in martial prowess, which explains Ramsay's vicious and overly aggressive style of swordsmanship.{{ref|aDwD|32}}

On her way home from the harvest feast, Lady Donella is abducted by Ramsay Bolton and forced to marry him that very day, although he is young enough to be her son. Ramsay, in an attempt to hide his true identity, pulls Reek off the dead body and gives him his own clothes and markings of identity, telling him to ride for help to the Dreadfort with the good horse. Reek has learned not to question Ramsay's orders, so he obeys. As Ramsay has expected, Ser Rodrik's men kill Reek, believing him to be Ramsay. The dead girl had soiled herself before she died, so while Reek is being killed, Ramsay smears the filth over himself and dons Reek's clothes. When Rodrik's men come back, they take Ramsay to be Reek and drag him back to Rodrik, who brings him as prisoner to Winterfell.{{ref|aCoK|35}}{{Ref|aCoK|66}}
