Daemon was tall and powerful, with broad shoulders, muscular arms, and a flat stomach. Targaryen on both sides, Daemon had all the hallmarks of his house. He had strong Targaryen features, with deep [[purple eyes]] and silver-gold hair which he wore long, flowing down to his shoulders in a silvery-gold mane. He always went clean-shaven, with neither beard nor moustache. Almost inhumanly beautiful, Daemon looked every inch the warrior, and many thought that he strongly resembled portraits of [[Aegon I Targaryen|Aegon the Conqueror]].<ref name=GreatBastards/>

His armour was ornate and costly, all black and red plate, and his warhelm was distinctive, with batlike steel "dragon wings" on the sides.

Daemon was the [[bastard]] son of [[Aegon IV Targaryen]] and his first cousin [[Daena Targaryen|Daena the Defiant]], the infamous daughter of [[Aegon III Targaryen]]. He was conceived during Daena's imprisonment in the [[Maidenvault]]. Daemon was raised in the [[Red Keep]] and was taught arms by Ser [[Quentyn Ball]], the master-at-arms at the Red Keep.

The identity of his father was kept secret until his twelfth birthday, when Daemon distinguished himself during a [[tourney]] melee by besting a score of other squires. Afterwards his father Aegon IV, who was already a king at the time, acknowledged Daemon as his bastard son and presented him with [[Blackfyre]], the [[Valyrian steel]] sword of [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] kings.

He took the name of Blackfyre for his house and displayed the inverted Targaryen arms, a black three-headed [[dragon]] on red.

Though King [[Aegon IV Targaryen]] legitimized all his bastards on his deathbed, Daemon did not rebel till twelve years after his father's death.

Upon the death of King Aegon, Daeron agreed to pay the dowry the late King Aegon had promised the Archon of Tyrosh so his [[Rohanne of Tyrosh|daughter]] could wed Daemon, Daemon it was said did not want this marriage but eventually decided to honor his late fathers wishes. On his wedding day, Daeron granted him a tract of land for him to build a castle on as a wedding gift. Daemon and his wife eventually had seven sons together. {{ref|twoiaf| Daeron II}}

There are some who say that it was the wedding of Princess [[Daenerys Targaryen (daughter of Aegon IV)|Daenerys]] to the [[Dornish]] Prince [[Maron Martell]], that led to the [[First Blackfyre Rebellion]]. It was said Daemon loved her and she him and that the rebellion happened because she was denied to him by Daeron.{{Ref|aDwD|67}}{{Ref|TSS}} Daemon was present at Daenerys' wedding and took part in the tourney held in celebration. During this tourney, he was unhorsed in the final tilt by Prince [[Baelor Targaryen (son of Daeron II)|Baelor]], who would be named "Breakspear" from that day forth. While Daenerys' wedding took place in {{Date|187}}, Daemon wouldn't rebel for another eight years.{{ref|twoiaf| Daeron II}}

Leading to his revolt were his growing resentment at being a [[bastard]] and surrounding himself with councilors who urged him to make his claim (mainly his half-brother, [[Aegor Rivers]] and his friend [[Quentyn Ball|Quentyn "Fireball" Ball]]).<ref>So Spake Martin: [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Month/2004/05/ Private Meeting (Santa Fe, NM)] (May 4, 2004)</ref> They fed rumors that his half-brother Daeron II was not the son of Aegon IV, but of [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Viserys II)|Aemon Targaryen]]; Daemon, as a [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] on both sides and a legitimized heir to the throne, was a logical choice to replace the academic king. Daemon, they said, was a better man and a better king.

Daemon claimed the [[Iron Throne]] as Aegon IV's true heir, and led a rebellion against King Daeron.

Daemon attracted many followers with his martial skill and his possession of [[Blackfyre]]. He was called ''the King Who Bore the Sword''. Many who disliked the Dornish influence and academic nature of Daeron's court preferred Daemon's rugged charisma and apathy toward learning and religion. The decisive battle of the war was fought [[Battle of the Redgrass Field|on the Redgrass Field]]. According to Eustace, who fought on the rebels' side, Daemon fought "like [[the Warrior]] himself". He defeated Ser [[Gwayne Corbray]] of the [[Kingsguard]] in single combat. Then, instead of attacking Prince [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar's]] forces, he defended the wounded Corbray and had him carried off the field.

In the meantime, [[Brynden Rivers]] and his personal guard of archers, the [[Raven's Teeth]], had found a spot from which they could rain their arrows down upon Daemon's position. Daemon and his twin 12-year-old sons, [[Aemon Blackfyre|Aemon]] and [[Aegon Blackfyre|Aegon]], were killed. With this the chance of victory for the rebels was gone.{{Ref|TSS}}

He was [[knight]]ed at 16, and King [[Jaehaerys I Targaryen]] gave him [[Dark Sister]].{{ref|trp}} His first marriage was to Lady [[Rhea Royce]], but he disliked both her and the Vale. He served as [[master of coin]] from {{Date|103}} until {{Date|104}} and [[master of laws]] for six months after that. Then he served as Commander of the [[City Watch of King's Landing]], where he inspired loyalty with many of the rank-and-file gold cloaks.{{Ref|TRP}}

His brother Viserys's first wife, [[Aemma Arryn]], died birthing [[Baelon Targaryen (son of Viserys I)|Baelon Targaryen]], Viserys' second son (the first son had died in the cradle). He wanted to present Mysaria with a dragon egg, which enraged King Viserys, who demanded that Daemon returned the egg and that he returned to his wife in the Vale. Daemon send Mysaria to [[Lys]], but Mysaria's ship sailed through a storm in the [[Narrow Sea]], and Mysaria lost the child. This hardened Daemon against his brother.{{Ref|TRP}}

In {{Date|106}}, Daemon led an army to [[War for the Stepstones|invade]] the [[Stepstones]] in the southern [[narrow sea]], with the support of Lord [[Corlys Velaryon]] and his fleet, and with the use of Daemons dragon, [[Caraxes]]. He made many enemies in the [[Kingdom of the Three Daughters]] ([[Myr]], [[Tyrosh]] and [[Lys]]) during the course of his adventures there.{{ref|trp}} He also made enemies in the [[Seven Kingdoms]], including Ser [[Otto Hightower]]{{ref|tpatq}} and members of [[House Royce]] for his disregard for his first wife, Rhea Royce.{{ref|trp}}

After conquering all but two of the islands, Daemon declared himself [[King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea]] in {{date|109}}. Daemon returned to [[Bloodstone]] in the Stepstones. In {{date|115}} he abandoned the Stepstones, after the death of his wife, Rhea Royce, but failed to claim [[Runestone]], which had been Rhea's seat. No longer welcome in the Vale, Daemon turned to [[Driftmark]], where he married [[Laena Velaryon]], the daughter of his friend Corlys. Because the marriage had been without consent of the King, he and Laena left [[Westeros]] and toured the [[Free Cities]]. They remained in [[Pentos]] for some time when they learned that Laena was pregnant, causing their daughters [[Baela Targaryen|Baela]] and [[Rhaena Targaryen (daughter of Daemon)|Rhaena]] to be born in Pentos, in {{Date|116}}. After hearing of the death of his step-son, Prince [[Lucerys Velaryon]], at the hands of his nephew Prince [[Aemond Targaryen]], Daemon, through his spymaster and former mistress [[Mysaria]], hired [[Blood (the butcher)|Blood]] and [[Cheese (the rat-catcher)|Cheese]] to murder [[Jaehaerys Targaryen (son of Aegon II)|a son]] of King [[Aegon II Targaryen]].{{ref|tpatq}}

The prince's enemies made during his adventures came back to haunt the blacks when Ser [[Otto Hightower]], now the [[Hand]] of [[Aegon II]], was able to recruit the [[Kingdom of the Three Daughters]] to send a fleet against them, [[Battle in the Gullet|breaking]] the [[House Velaryon|Velaryon]] blockade and killing his stepson [[Jacaerys Velaryon|Jace]].{{ref|tpatq}}

Daemon abandoned the great castle of Harrenhal when Aemond and Ser [[Criston Cole]] began marching on Harrenhal. Instead, Daemon flew Caraxes back to King's Landing and assisted Rhaenyra with [[Fall of King's Landing|capturing King's Landing]].{{ref|tpatq}}

While searching for Aemond and [[Vhagar]], who were burning the [[Riverlands]], Daemon took [[Nettles]] for a bedmate and made their base in [[Maidenpool]]. Maester [[Norren (House Mooton)|Norren]] informed them that Queen Rhaenyra wanted Nettles dead. Daemon and Nettles separated the next morning.{{ref|tpatq}}

Daemon challenged Aemond, waiting for 13 days at [[Harrenhal]] until Aemond stopped burning the Riverlands to come face him. The [[Dance over Harrenhal]] ended in the deaths of both riders and both dragons over the [[Gods Eye]]. Daemon was 49 when he died. Unlike Aemond's body, however, Daemon's was never found. Amongst whores, there are many hierarchies. Some cater to highly exclusive clientele, make a good enough living and may to a certain extent pick and choose their clientele, while others take who they can get and do whatever they have to in order to survive, often living miserable lives. In [[Essos]] many whores are enslaved.

Whores are normally on the bottom rung of the societal ladder, even the wealthier ones, and are looked down upon by most people because of their trade. It is considered dishonorable for a nobleman to openly frequent whores and brothels, hence the secret passageway that runs from [[Chataya's brothel|brothel]] in [[King's Landing]] to a nearby stable. Despite these attitudes, [[Westeros]] teems with brothels and whores. [[Tywin Lannister]] is well known for his disdain of whores and those who take advantage of their services.

In the [[Free Cities]], and other towns an cities, the attitude towards prostitution is slightly different, there appears to be less ignominy in engaging the services of a whore. This may be because many of the [[Free Cities]] practice slavery and where there is slavery there will be sexual abuse and exploitation, many whores are of course also [[slave]]s. The [[Valyrian]]s were originally a sheep-herding folk of the Valyrian peninsula. When they discovered [[dragons]] lairing in the Fourteen Flames, their rise to power began.

As they grew in power the Valyrians sent their [[slave]]s to the mines beneath the Fourteen Flames, searching for gold among other things. Men of a hundred different nations laboured in those mines. The worst slaves were sent down to die in the red darkness of the mines.

The mines of old Valyria were always hot and they grew hotter as the shafts were driven deeper and deeper. The slaves toiled in an oven, the rocks around them were too hot to touch. The air stank of brimstone and would sear the slave’s lungs as they breathed it. Sometimes when they broke through a wall in search of gold, they would find steam instead, or boiling water or molten rock. Certain shafts were cut so low that the slaves could not stand upright so had to crawl or bend.{{ref|affc|22}}
