===Early life===
When [[Bran Stark]] has visions through the heart tree of Winterfell, a scene seems to involve a girl looking like Arya. Two children are seen duelling with broken branches, using them as swords. The girl is older and taller than the boy. She defeats the boy, slashing him across the thigh. The boy loses his balance and falls into the pool. He starts splashing and shouting. The girl warns him to be quiet, or [[Nan|Old Nan]] will hear him and notify their father. She then kneels and pulls her younger brother from the pool. The scene shifts to another vision before Bran has a chance to see more of the two children.{{Ref|aDwD|34}}

Lyanna was at Winterfell when her father promised her hand to Robert Baratheon. That same night she confided to Eddard concerning her opinion of Robert: that the man will never keep to one bed. She had heard that Robert had an illegitimate daughter in the [[Vale of Arryn]], apparently [[Mya Stone]]. Eddard attempted to persuade her that what Robert did before the betrothal was insignificant and that Robert would change. She was not convinced.{{Ref|aGoT|35}}

===Harrenhal===
Lyanna was present at the [[tourney at Harrenhal]]. There she found [[Howland Reed]] being bullied by three young squires, none older than fifteen-years-old. She roared "That's my father's man you're kicking" and attacked them with a tourney sword. The bullies scattered and Lyanna "the she-wolf" took the injured man back to her "lair," probably a tent. She cleaned his wounds and bound them with linen. Then she introduced the guest to her brothers [[Brandon Stark]] ("the wild wolf"), [[Eddard Stark]] ("the quiet wolf"), and [[Benjen Stark]] ("the pup").

That evening, Lyanna persuaded Reed to attend the feast marking the start of the tournament. She insisted that he was highborn and had as much right to attend as anyone. The "wolf maid" was not easy to refuse. Benjen found a suitable garb for Reed. Within [[Harrenhal]], Reed ate and drank with the Starks. During the feast [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Prince Rhaegar Targaryen]], a noted musician, performed a sad and beautiful song that made Lyanna weep; when Benjen teased her for crying, she poured wine over his head.{{Ref|aSoS|24}}

During the feast, Lyanna recognized the three bullying squires. One serving a pitchfork knight ([[House Haigh]]), one serving a porcupine ([[House Blount]]), and the last boy serving a knight of two towers ([[House Frey]]). She pointed them out to her brothers. Benjen volunteered to find armor for Reed, in case the crannogman wished to challenge them. Reed slept in the tent of Eddard that night. During the first two days of the tournament, the porcupine knight, pitchfork knight, and the knight of the two towers each won a place among the champions. But then the [[Knight of the Laughing Tree]] challenged and defeated all three of them, winning custody over their horses and armor. When the defeated trio sought to ransom back their former property, the Knight declared his terms: that they ought to teach their squires honor. The trio proceeded to chastise their squires sharply.{{Ref|aSoS|24}}

The Knight attracted unwanted attention. Robert Baratheon and [[Richard Lonmouth]] were determined to unmask him, while [[Aerys II Targaryen]] was certain that the man was his enemy. By the next morning, the Knight disappeared. An angry Aerys sent Rhaegar to search for the vanished Knight, but only the shield of the Knight could be found.{{Ref|aSoS|24}} Rhaegar went on to win the tournament and shocked all present by passing over [[Elia Martell|his wife]] to crown Lyanna, then already betrothed to Robert Baratheon, as [[queen of love and beauty]]. According to the recollections of Eddard Stark, that day Rhaegar managed to unseat [[Brandon Stark]], [[Yohn Royce]], [[Arthur Dayne]], and [[Barristan Selmy]]. Robert Baratheon was among the spectators, jesting with [[Jon Arryn]] and [[Eon Hunter]]. Then the victorious Rhaegar urged his horse past [[Elia Martell]], laying the [[blue winter rose]] laurel of the queen of beauty in Lyanna's lap. At that moment "all the smiles died".{{Ref|aGoT|58}} Selmy blames himself for failing to defeat Rhaegar that day, for then he would have had a chance to crown his own lady love: [[Ashara Dayne]].{{Ref|aDwD|67}}

At some time after the tournament, Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar with the help of [[Arthur Dayne]] and [[Oswell Whent]].<ref name="aSoIaF App">"Rhaegar Targaryen" entry in ''[[A World of Ice and Fire]]''</ref> The story (as told by [[Robert Baratheon]]) goes that Rhaegar carried her off and raped her.{{Ref|aGoT|66}} Barristan Selmy is convinced that "Prince Rhaegar loved his Lady Lyanna," though that love sent thousands to their respective deaths.{{Ref|aDwD|67}} According to [[Viserys Targaryen]], Rhaegar was simply not happy with his marriage. If Rhaegar was happy with Elia, he would not have needed Lyanna. He once blamed their sister [[Daenerys Targaryen]] for being born too late to marry Rhaegar. A happily married Rhaegar would need neither Elia nor Lyanna. Daenerys countered that, by the same logic, it was the fault of Viserys that he was not a girl, because then he would be the sister destined for Rhaegar. Viserys beat her cruelly for her insolence.{{Ref|aSoS|42}} [[Cersei Lannister]], who was infatuated with Rhaegar, believes that the [[Targaryen madness|madness]] led King Aerys to deny Lord [[Tywin Lannister]]'s proposal of marriage between her and the crown prince; Cersei thinks that if she herself had only married Rhaegar as [[faith of the Seven|the gods]] had intended, he would have been satisfied in his queen and never have looked twice at the "wolf girl".{{ref|affc|24}}

Her eldest brother [[Brandon Stark]] was on his way to [[Riverrun]] when the news of his sister's disappearance reached him, and instead he went straight to [[King's Landing]]. Entering the [[Red Keep]] with a few companions ([[Ethan Glover]], [[Jeffory Mallister]], [[Kyle Royce]] and [[Elbert Arryn]]), he roared for Rhaegar "to come out and die." But Rhaegar wasn't there. King [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys]] had Brandon and his companions arrested, accusing them of plotting murder and charged them with treason. Aerys summoned their fathers to court, supposedly to answer the charge against their sons. When they presented themselves, Aerys decided to kill them all, fathers and sons together, save only [[Ethan Glover]]. Brandon and Lyanna's father, Lord [[Rickard Stark]], demanded a [[trial by combat]], and the king granted him the request. Lord Stark was allowed to armor himself for battle but was then suspended from the rafters over a blazing fire, Aerys choosing "fire" as his champion. He had Brandon watch as Rickard slowly roasted, the young son attached to a device which tightened a cord around his neck whenever he moved. Trying to reach for his longsword and rescue his father, Brandon strangled himself. They died with no real trial. This was a primary impetus for [[Robert's Rebellion]]. Aerys next demanded the heads of Robert and Eddard. They were both wards of Jon Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie having pledged to protect them. Arryn responded to Aerys by raising his banners in revolt.{{Ref|aCoK|55}}{{Ref|aGoT|2}}

During the war, Lyanna's fiancé Robert and brother Eddard were important leaders, together with [[Jon Arryn]], who had been their foster father. Her exact whereabouts during the war are unknown. Robert and Eddard faced Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]] and the royal army at [[Battle of the Trident|the Trident]], where Robert slew Rhaegar in single combat and the rebels defeated the royal army.{{Ref|aGoT|4}} According to the stories of [[Viserys Targaryen]], Rhaegar had fought and died for "the woman he loved."{{Ref|aGoT|3}} [[Daenerys Targaryen]] believes in that version of the story.{{Ref|aGoT|64}} One of the visions Daenerys sees in the [[House of the Undying]], seems to depict the last moments of Rhaegar. Rubies are flying from his chest like drops of blood. Then his knees sink into the water. He whispers Lyanna's name with his last breath.{{Ref|aCoK|48}}<ref name="aSoIaF App"/>

Following the [[Sack of King's Landing]], Eddard Stark rode south to the [[Stormlands]] to lift the [[siege of Storm's End]]. The Lords [[Mace Tyrell|Tyrell]] and [[Paxter Redwyne|Redwyne]] bent the knee, and swore fealty to Robert. Eddard then rode to the [[Tower of Joy]] in the [[Red Mountains]] of [[Dorne]] with his six companions ([[Martyn Cassel]], [[Theo Wull]], [[Ethan Glover]], [[Mark Ryswell]], [[Howland Reed]] and [[Willam Dustin]]), and found the three remaining loyalist members of the [[Kingsguard]] (Ser [[Arthur Dayne]], Ser [[Oswell Whent]], and Ser [[Gerold Hightower]]) guarding it. Only Ned and his bannerman [[Howland Reed]] survived the ensuing battle. Inside the tower, Ned found Lyanna in a "bed of blood", dying.{{Ref|aGoT|39}}{{Ref|awoiaf| Lyanna Stark}} When Eddard recalls the conflict in a dream, there is an additional detail. While the combatants clash, Lyanna screams. The dream then switches to a storm of blue rose petals, blowing across a blood-streaked sky.{{Ref|aGoT|39}} It is uncertain if these details are accurate memories.

Lyanna died in a room that smelled of "blood and roses". A fever had taken her strength. Her voice had been faint as a whisper. There was fear in her eyes, while she called for "Ned" to promise her something. When her brother gave his word, the fear left her. She smiled, and her fingers clutched his own in a tight grip. They were still holding each other as she "gave up her hold on life". Rose petals slipped from her palm, dead and black. Later, [[Howland Reed]] found Eddard still holding the corpse. Howland managed to separate the hands of the living man and the dying girl, though Eddard had no recollection of what happened after Lyanna died.{{Ref|aGoT|4}} Shortly before her death, Lyanna extracted a promise from Ned.{{Ref|aGoT|35}} Neither the content of the promise nor the cause of her death are currently known. Her final words were a phrase that would haunt her brother for the rest of his life:

Lyanna was only sixteen years old at the time of her death.{{Ref|aGoT|8}} Her tomb lies in the [[crypts of Winterfell]], beside that of Rickard Stark. At the other side of Rickard's tomb stands the tomb of Brandon Stark. A statue of Lyanna has been carved in the stone of her tomb, though Robert Baratheon claimed that the stonemason failed to capture her beauty. Eddard claims that Lyanna herself asked him to return her to Winterfell. He reports bringing flowers to her tomb whenever he can, as his sister was fond of flowers.{{Ref|aGoT|4}} [[Bran Stark]] notes that only the kings and lords of Winterfell are supposed to have statues in their likeness, not their family members. Many of the dead men and women attending are people that Theon knew personally or were slain by his own hand and/or command. But he also notices faces that he had never known in life. Among them is Lyanna: a slim, sad girl wearing a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown splattered with blood. Brandon Stark stood beside her, their father Rickard just behind them. [[Daenerys]] ([[w:Emilia Clarke|Emilia Clarke]]) is beginning to gain confidence in her new role as the Khal's wife, and gains the respect of the exiled knight Ser [[Jorah Mormont]] ([[w:Iain Glen|Iain Glen]]). But the relationship with her brother [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]] ([[w:Harry Lloyd|Harry Lloyd]]) becomes strained when he angrily assaults her under the assumption that she is giving him commands. As punishment, he is choked and nearly killed by Daenerys's [[bloodrider]] [[Rakharo]] ([[w:Elyes Gabel|Elyes Gabel]]) and forced to walk back to camp.[[Irri]] (Amrita Acharia) notices that Daenerys is pregnant, and shares the news with Jorah and Rakharo. With Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) now awake, [[Old Nan]] ([[w:Margaret John|Margaret John]]) tells him a tale of a long-ago endless winter, where the [[Others|White Walkers]] first appeared riding their dead horses and raising Wights from the men they slaughtered. Her story is interrupted by [[Robb Stark|Robb]] ([[w:Richard Madden|Richard Madden]]) who sadly confirms to Bran that his injuries are permanent, and he'll never walk again. Bran, unable to remember a thing about his fall, wishes he were dead.

===At King's Landing===
Eddard's party arrives at [[King's Landing]]. Eddard ([[w:Sean Bean|Sean Bean]]) is immediately summoned to a meeting of the king's [[Small Council]]. On his way through the throne room he encounters [[Jaime Lannister]] ([[w:Nikolaj Coster-Waldau|Nikolaj Coster-Waldau]]) and it is revealed that Jaime killed the [[Aerys II|Mad King Aerys Targaryen]]. Jaime reminds Eddard that Aerys killed Eddard's father and brother; Eddard does not consider this grounds for Jaime to break his oath as a knight of the [[Kingsguard]].

Eddard joins the Small Council, consisting of the king's brother, Lord [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]] (Gethin Anthony), the [[w:eunuch|eunuch]] Lord [[Varys]] ([[w:Conleth Hill|Conleth Hill]]), Grand [[Maester]] [[Pycelle]] ([[w:Julian Glover|Julian Glover]]) and the [[Master of Coin]] [[Petyr Baelish|Lord Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish]] ([[w:Aidan Gillen|Aidan Gillen]]). Littlefinger once dueled Eddard's brother for Catelyn's hand in marriage, and implies that he is still in love with her. Renly announces that Robert plans to hold a great Tourney in honor of Eddard's appointment as the hand of the king. Eddard learns that the crown is heavily indebted, especially with the queen's father Lord [[Tywin Lannister]].

Catelyn has arrived in King's Landing, supposedly in secret. However, she is taken by a pair of city watchmen to a brothel owned by Littlefinger. He meets her there and tells her that he brought her there to keep her safe and anonymous. Varys is also there and reveals that he learned of Catelyn's arrival through his spies. The three of them and Ser Rodrik (Ron Donachie) discuss the attempted murder of Bran. Littlefinger shocks all of them by admitting that the dagger used by the assassin was once his own. He claims that he lost it in a bet with [[Tyrion Lannister]]; betting on Jaime Lannister to win a previous Tourney. Littlefinger arranges a meeting between Eddard and his wife, and Lord Stark reluctantly takes on Littlefinger as an ally who will help them find Bran's assailant.After Catelyn leaves the capital, Eddard returns to his keep only to find his daughters are arguing. [[Arya]] (Maisie Williams) is furious at [[Sansa]] (Sophie Turner) for lying to protect Joffrey. Ned reminds her that Joffrey is a prince, and will be king one day with Sansa as his wife. Learning that his younger daughter aspires to be a swordsman, and has a sword of her own, he hires a Braavosi "water dancer", [[Syrio Forel]] (Miltos Yerolemou) to teach her the art of swordsmanship.

===At the Wall===
Jon has joined the other recruits under the firm hand of Ser [[Alliser Thorne]] ([[w:Owen Teale|Owen Teale]]), and easily beats every opponent sent against him. Ser Alliser berates them all for their poor performance, but has no kind words for Jon, dubbing him "Lord Snow" to mock his bastard heritage and telling him "You're the least useless person here." Disheartened, Jon asks [[Benjen Stark]] ([[w:Joseph Mawle|Joseph Mawle]]) to take him in a several-month-long ranging north of the Wall, but his uncle shoots him down telling him, "Here a man gets only what he earns, when he earns it." [[Tyrion]] ([[w:Peter Dinklage|Peter Dinklage]]) informs Jon that he isn't "better" than any of his new "brothers", but only more fortunate, as he was trained by a master-at-arms, while the others are all orphan boys or criminals, who have likely never held a sword before today. To make amends, Jon decides to teach his fellow recruits proper sword training. Later, Tyrion is beseeched by Lord Commander Mormont and the ancient, blind [[Maester Aemon]] ([[w:Peter Vaughan|Peter Vaughan]]) to ask his sister and brother-in-law for more men for the [[Night's Watch]]. To film the scenes at the Wall the production built a set on the abandoned quarry of [[w:Magheramorne|Magheramorne]], a few minutes north of [[w:Belfast|Belfast]]. The composite set (with both exteriors and interiors) consisted of a large section of Castle Black including the courtyard, the ravenry, the mess hall and the barracks, and used the stone wall of the quarry as the basis for the ice wall that protects Westeros from the dangers that dwell beyond. [[Bran Stark|Bran]] rides his horse [[Dancer]] into the Great Hall of [[Winterfell]] for the [[harvest feast]]. He wishes [[Summer (direwolf)|Summer]] was with him, but Ser [[Rodrik Cassel]] was unyielding. From the crowded benches, men shout "Stark!" and "Winterfell!" as he passes. Bran knows they are cheering for the harvest, for victory, and for all the [[House Stark|Starks]] who came before rather than for him, but he still swells with pride and even forgets he is broken until he reaches the dais. There [[Osha]] and [[Hodor]] unstrap him and carry him to the high seat. Ser Rodrik, his daughter [[Beth Cassel|Beth]], and [[Maester]] [[Luwin]] are seated to Bran's left and [[Rickon Stark|Rickon]] to his right, his hair uncut since [[Catelyn Stark|their mother]] left because he bit the last girl to try. After Ser Rodrik bellows for quiet, Bran welcomes the guests and asks them to thank the gods for [[Robb Stark|Robb]]'s victories and the bountiful harvest. His toast of "May there be a hundred more," brings an echoing cheer and Ser Rodrik says [[Eddard Stark|his father]] would be proud.

They feast on course after course, including seafood brought by Lord [[Wyman Manderly]] from [[White Harbor]]. Manderly has also brought musicians, but only [[Hodor]] seems to be listening and the songs are drowned beneath the talk and laughter. Ser Rodrik and Maester Luwin talk over Beth's head, while Rickon screams happily with [[Walder Frey (Little)|Little Walder]] and [[Walder Frey (Big)|Big Walder]]. Bran did not want the Walders at the high table but Maester Luwin reminded him they would become kin when Robb weds one of their aunts and Arya marries their uncle [[Elmar Frey]], though Bran argued Arya would never stand for that.

Each dish is served to Bran first, and soon he is full and must nod approval rather than taste everything. As instructed, he sends particularly delicious dishes to the lords as a gesture of friendship: salmon to sad Lady [[Donella Hornwood]], boar to [[Mors Umber|Mors]] and [[Hother Umber]], goose-in-berries to [[Cley Cerwyn]], lobster to [[Joseth]] the master of horse for training Dancer, sweets to Hodor and Old [[Nan]] because he loves them, and beets and turnips to the Walders because Ser Rodrik insists he give them something.

Bran watches the feast detachedly, seeing everything yet a part of nothing. He sees Osha break a flagon over the head of a [[House Tallhart|Tallhart]] man for sliding his hand under her skirts, though another woman does not seem to mind [[Mikken]]'s hand down her bodice. He watches [[Farlen]] make his red bitch beg and Old Nan pluck at the crust of a hot pie. On the dais, he sees Lord Manderly attacking a plate of lampreys in his special wide chair, sad Lady Hornwood picking listlessly at her food, and the Umber brothers playing a drinking game.

The heat and noise soon grow too much and Bran finds himself dreaming of the cool in the [[godswood]]. Studying his father's ornate goblet, Bran recalls the [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 5|welcoming feast]] for King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]] and realizes everyone else is gone—either to war, captivity, [[the Wall]], or their graves. Even the men at the tables are new, since everyone who went south with his father is dead and the rest rode to war with Robb. When he wonders who will be missing next year and the year after, Bran feels like crying but reminds himself he is the Stark in Winterfell and almost a man grown.

The doors to the hall open and [[Alebelly]] leads in two new guests: [[Meera Reed|Meera]] and [[Jojen Reed]] of [[Greywater Watch]]. Bran recognizes them as [[crannogmen]] from [[the Neck]], a shy and simple folk who rarely leave their swamps, but he hears Little Walder calling them "mudmen" and explaining to Rickon that they are thieves and cravens with green teeth from eating frogs. As places are hurriedly prepared on the dais, Ser Rodrik explains that these must be the children of [[Howland Reed]], a great friend and staunch companion of Bran's father during [[Robert's Rebellion]].

The slender girl Meera is armed with woven net, bronze knife, and frog spear as well as an iron helm, leather shield, and bronze-scale jerkin. Her younger brother Jojen is unarmed and dressed all in green, which brings out the deep green of his eyes. Kneeling before the dais, the Reeds explain that they have come to renew [[House Reed]]'s fealty to the [[King in the North]]. Bran explains that Robb is away fighting but says they may say their words to him. Together, the Reeds recite their ancient oath, swearing by earth and water, by bronze and iron, and by ice and fire never to fail the Starks of Winterfell. Unsure how to respond, Bran finally decides on "May your winters be short and your summers bountiful," and bids them rise. Meera offers gifts of fish, frog, and fowl, and Bran offers them the meat and mead of Winterfell in return.

Jojen immediately asks where the [[direwolf|direwolves]] are and Rickon answers that they are in the godswood because [[Shaggydog]] was bad. When Meera says that Jojen would like to see them, Little Walder warns that they will bite. Pleased by the Reeds' interest, Bran promises that Summer at least will not bite and will keep Shaggydog away. He cannot recall ever meeting a crannogman and would like to talk more, but the feast is too noisy. When he learns from Ser Rodrik that they truly eat frogs, Bran sends the Reeds mutton, [[aurochs]], and beef stew, which they seem to like. When Meera catches him staring, Bran blushes.

After the tables are cleared away, the music and singing grows wilder. Mors Umber grabs a passing serving girl and begins whirling her about the floor and others soon join in. Hodor dances by himself, while Wyman Manderly and then Cley Cerwyn partner with little Beth Cassel. Ser Rodrik approaches Lady Hornwood, but she excuses herself. Once again unable to participate, Bran watches long enough to be polite, then calls Hodor to carry him to bed, conscious of the stares of onlookers.

Just outside the hall, they come upon Joseth and giggling woman with her skirts above her waist. The girl screams when she sees Hodor watching, so Bran has to tell him to leave them be. After getting help with his boots and breeches, Bran dismisses Hodor and lies down to sleep. Then he recalls his father telling him the [[Kingsguard]] were once a shining example, and the finest knight he ever saw was Ser [[Arthur Dayne]], who would have killed him but for Howland Reed. His father became sad at that and spoke no further, but now Bran wishes he had asked what he meant.

Bran goes to sleep thinking of knights, but his dreams are of wolves in the godswood again and he can hear and smell the feast still going on. At the rattle of iron, he and his brother race to confront the strange intruders: a female and a young male with no taint of fear. Bran recognizes Meera's voice when she asks if Jojen knew the wolves would be so big. Jojen points out they are still growing and opines that Shaggydog is full of fear and rage but Summer is stronger than he knows. Meera cautions her brother, but Jojen insists this is not the day he dies and reaches out to touch Summer. At his touch, Bran loses contact and suddenly feels he is falling again.

Wights are supposedly attracted to warm blood and will attack with surprising strength. Unlike the [[Others]] they are slow and clumsy.{{Ref|aSoS|18}} Wights have a queer, cold scent that can panic animals if they catch a wiff of it.{{Ref|aSoS|46}} It appears that wights retain at least some of their former memories.{{ref|AGOT|52}}{{ref|ADWD|Prologue}}

Being dead, wights feel no pain and will continue to fight regardless of injury.{{Ref|aSoS|46}} Though they can be stopped by total dismemberment, their limbs will continue to move if detached from their bodies. Wights appear to be able to remain in a state of stasis, such as outside the hillside entrance to the [[cave of the three-eyed crow]]. The snows have buried most of the dead men, but they remain frozen and waiting.{{Ref|aDwD|34}}

[[Dragonglass]] cannot stop a wight{{Ref|aSoS|46}} but fire can. Burning corpses appears to prevent them from being reanimated by the Others to become wights.

[[Jon Snow|Jon]] is presented with the [[Valyrian steel]] sword [[Longclaw]] by [[Lord Commander of the Night's Watch|Lord Commander]] [[Jeor Mormont|Mormont]]. Jon attempts to refuse, but the commander insists. Later, Jon gets a message that Maester [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Maekar I)|Aemon]] wants to see him. The maester knows that Jon is divided between his duty and his family loyalties and explains that he sympathizes. When Jon rejects his empathy, the old man reveals that he is Aemon Targaryen, son of King [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar I]].

==Synopsis==
[[Jon Snow|Jon]] lies that he is well when asked by [[Lord Commander of the Night's Watch|Lord Commander]] [[Jeor Mormont|Mormont]]. His right hand is swathed in bandages halfway to the elbow and pains him constantly. When he threw the burning curtains onto the [[Others#Wights|wight]] of [[Othor]], Jon burned his hand more seriously than he realized, but Maester [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Maekar I)|Aemon]] has assured him that there will be no permanent damage aside from the scars. Jon is glad, however, that only [[Ghost]] can see him writhe and weep from the pain at night. Yet, when he does manage to sleep, Jon has nightmares of battling a wight with [[Eddard Stark|his father]]’s face that are far worse.

Jon notices that the Lord Commander looks old and grumpy without his beard, which has been shaved after it was badly singed in the fire. Mormont explains to Jon that the rangers’ search has found no sign of [[Benjen Stark|his uncle]] or more wights; two of those were bad enough. Still both Mormont and Maester Aemon are sure there will be more because the cold winds are rising.

Jon states there was a bird last night, saying he hoped for news of his father. Mormont assures Jon that he would have told him if there was. This message brought word that Ser [[Barristan Selmy]] has been cast out of the [[Kingsguard]] and is now wanted for treason, having killed two [[City Watch of King's Landing|gold cloaks]] sent to arrest him. Mormont’s distaste is plain for men who would send gold cloaks to arrest a knight as renowned of Ser Barristan the Bold. The Lord Commander goes on to lament that they have [[Others|white shadows]] in the woods, [[Others#Wights|undead]] stalking the halls, and a [[Joffrey Baratheon|boy]] on the [[Iron Throne]].

Mormont notes that Grand Maester [[Pycelle]] did not include any news about Jon’s sisters; they only tell the Night's Watch what they want them to know. Jon thinks that ''he'' is only told what Mormont want ''him'' to know; he has heard nothing of his brother [[Robb Stark]] in the south.

Mormont asks when Maester Aemon believes Jon will be able to resume using his hand. Jon says soon and the Lord Commander brings out a sword, declaring that Jon is ready for it. Jon is puzzled but is told to take the sword. He recognizes it as a [[bastard sword]] of [[Valyrian steel]]. Mormont explains that the sword is named [[Longclaw]] and has belonged to [[House Mormont]] for five centuries. After it was burned in the fire in his tower, Mormont has had the pommel remade into the likeness of a white wolf's head with red garnets for eyes.

When he was young, Jon dreamed of doing great deeds and being granted [[Ice]] in reward for saving his father’s life, but he knew it was a folly. Now the memory that he might wish to steal his brother’s birthright shames him. Jon does not feel that he deserves Longclaw either and attempts to decline, but Mormont insists he has earned it with his quick thinking to use fire to destroy the wight. Jon accepts, but reminds himself that Mormont is not his father and he still dreams of Ice.

Mormont tells Jon that he will now have to practice his two-handed strokes as well, suggesting that Ser [[Endrew Tarth]] from the [[Shadow Tower]], who will assume the duties of master-at-arms, can help him. Ser [[Alliser Thorne]] has been sent to [[King's Landing]] with the hand of [[Jafer Flowers]] to attempt to get the boy king’s attention. Mormont explains that a message from an anointed high-born knight should get more attention than from an old crow. It also puts a thousand leagues between Jon and Ser Alliser.

Mormont insists, however, that none of this means that he approves of Jon’s actions: it takes a man to wield Longclaw and he expects Jon to act the part. Jon agrees, thinking again that it is not the blade he would have chosen, but a fine one. He is also glad to be free from Ser Alliser. Then Mormont sends Jon to fetch his supper. As he leaves, Jon sees the guards smiling; one man comments on the sword’s quality and another tells Jon he earned it. Jon is angry but cannot say why.

Outside, Jon’s friends are waiting for him, wanting to see the sword. Pyp jokes that Jon is probably the only man in the entire history of the Night’s Watch to be rewarded for burning down the Lord Commander's Tower. Even Jon has to smile; no one blames him for setting the fire that destroyed the wight, even if it did gut the top two floors of the tower. The other wight was hacked to pieces, but not before killing Ser [[Jaremy Rykker]] and four other men. The thought of the wights sours Jon’s mood and he quickly leaves his friends to get the Lord Commander’s supper. Jon is deeply affected by facing the wight, but does not blame his friends for not understanding. They cannot understand; they did not see the pale glow of the blue eyes or feel the cold black hands. They also do not know of the fighting in the [[riverlands]].

Ghost is lying beside the door to his room. Jon thinks back to when he found the [[direwolf]] hidden in the snow. He shows Ghost the pommel of the swords, stating it is him. Then [[Samwell Tarly|Sam]] arrives. He does not want to see the blade, stating he has seen his father’s Valyrian steel [[Heartsbane|blade]] and it was so sharp he feared he might hurt one of his sisters. Sam then announces that Maester Aemon wants to see Jon. Jon is puzzled since it is not time for his bandages to be changed, but then accuses Sam of telling the maester that he knows about the riverlands. Sam insists that he thinks the maester knew anyway. Jon tells Sam that he will find the maester himself.

[[Clydas]] is helping Maester Aemon in the rookery when Jon arrives. The maester dismisses Clydas and asks Jon to assist him with feeding the ravens. As they work, Aemon explains that although other birds can be trained to fly messages the [[Night's Watch]] has always preferred ravens. The old man goes on to explain that the sworn brothers do not wed because love is the bane of honor and duty, which the Night’s Watch cannot afford; they must be totally committed to defending the realm from the darkness to the north.

When Jon fails to understand, the maester explains that in every man’s life there comes a day when he must choose between his duty and his family, and only one man in ten thousand is strong enough to choose duty. Jon questions if the maester believes this is his day. Maester Aemon only replies that he knows the choice is always hard. Jon insists that the old man does not know what it feels like to be in his situation.

Maester Aemon sighs and sadly tells Jon that his vows have been tested three times: once as a boy, once in his prime, and once as an old man. The old maester elaborates that the last test was just as hard as the others, regardless that he was blind, frail, and helpless. He recalls how it grieved him to sit forgotten as his ravens brought news from the south of the ruin of his House and the death of his [[Aerys II Targaryen|brother’s grandson]], and [[Rhaegar Targaryen|''his'' son]], and even the [[Rhaenys Targaryen (daughter of Rhaegar)|''little'']] [[Aegon Targaryen (son of Rhaegar)|''children'']].

Jon asks who Maester Aemon is, almost in dread. The old man insists that he is only a maester of the [[Citadel]] bound to [[Castle Black]] and the Night’s Watch, but that his father was [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar]], the First of His Name, and that his brother [[Aegon V Targaryen|Aegon]] ruled after their father in his stead. Jon is astounded. Aemon declares that he ''does'' know how Jon feels, and so he will not tell Jon to stay or go. Jon must make his own choice, and live with it for the rest of his days as Aemon has.

The '''Faceless Men''' are a religious society of assassins who worship the [[Many-Faced God]], a god of death.

==History==
The society originated in the volcanic [[slave]] mines of [[Valyria]], prior to the founding of [[Braavos]] and the [[Doom of Valyria]]. The tale of its beginnings centers around a figure of unknown origins who was the first Faceless Man. This man heard the prayers of the slaves to their various gods and came to conclude that they all prayed to the same god "with a hundred different faces", the [[Many-Faced God]], and that he was "that god's instrument". This led to him giving "the first [[Gift of mercy|gift]]" to the most desperate slave. The first Faceless Man later brought the gift to the masters as well.{{ref|affc|34}}

==Religion==
In the guild's [[House of Black and White]] in [[Braavos]], followers wear black and white robes and perform religious duties for the community, such as tending to the dead. The House contains a fountain and alcoves with idols of many death gods, including the [[Stranger (the Seven)|Stranger]] of the [[Faith of the Seven|Seven]], but there are no formal services. Some visiting worshippers light candles to their god, then drink from the fountain using a black cup. The religious order refill the fountain with a poison, so that drinking from the fountain leads to a painless death. This is sometimes referred to as "the gift" of the Many Faced God.

A phrase associated with the cult of the Many-Faced God is ''[[valar morghulis]]'', translated from [[High Valyrian]] as "All men must die"; the formal response to this is ''[[valar dohaeris]]'', or "All men must serve."

According to the guild, the god is present in many religions, all under different names. In [[Qohor]], it is called the [[Black Goat of Qohor|Black Goat]]. In [[Yi Ti]], the [[Lion of Night]] and in the [[Faith of the Seven]], the Stranger.{{ref|affc|34}}

==Inner workings and assassinations==
Followers of Him of Many Faces consider death to be part of the natural order of things and a merciful end to suffering.

For a price, the guild will agree to kill anyone in the world, considering this contract to be a sacrament of their god. The price is always high or dear, but within the means of the person if they are willing to make the sacrifice. The cost of their services depends on the prominence and security of the target.

When the [[small council]] discuss the possibility of hiring a Faceless Man to kill [[Daenerys Targaryen]], [[Petyr Baelish]] states that the council could hire an army of [[sellsword]]s for half the price that the Faceless Men would charge for a merchant, and that killing a princess would be far more expensive.{{Ref|aGoT|33}} In ''[[A Dance with Dragons]]'', it is revealed the price could be someone's income or a child.

An elite group of followers within the House, called the Faceless Men, are trained to perform this task. Faceless Men are occasionally women. Only rarely would they train a child. They are trained to use all their senses to root out deception and create their disguises, seemingly possessing magical abilities that allow them to change their appearance at will. Part of their training includes discarding their true identity in a nihilistic way, thinking of themselves as "no one".

The Faceless Men reconvene at the House of Black and White, the "temple" of the Many-Faced God, where they discuss the potential jobs for the month and dole these contract assassinations out through a round table. They use a variety of methods to kill their targets, including a [[poison]] called [[the strangler]].{{ref|acok|0}}

They also cure the faces of the dead who come to die in their sanctuary, hanging these on the wall as macabre masks for use in their disguises during assassination contracts. These are more than masks, however, and the wearer assumes the true appearance when applied using a tribute of one's own blood to moisten the application. In this way, the Faceless Men are using tools as part of their disguise, rather than a reliance on glamours or outright [[magic]] for disguises, like [[Melisandre]] or other followers of [[R'hllor]].

[[Arya Stark]] learns that the assassination technique by a Faceless Man must not be haphazard, killing only the intended target. Their fee is for a precise killing, in many cases looking like an accident, rather than an outright murder.{{ref|adwd|64}}

==Faceless Men identities==
A [[kindly man]] seems to have some position of authority in the guild, as he is the one who takes charge of Arya Stark's training. A [[waif]] works in the House of Black and White handling poisons. Though she is 36 years old, she has a shrunken and childlike appearance brought about by exposure to poisons.

Several more Faceless Men are seen by Arya at the House of Black and White. She describes them as "the [[handsome man]]," "the [[fat fellow]]," "the [[stern face]]," "the [[squinter]]," " the [[lordling]]", "the [[starved man]]" and "[[plague face]]".{{ref|AFFC|22}}{{ref|ADWD|64}}

After Daenerys's departure, Yunkai begins preparing for the next conflict by hiring other sellswords, such as the [[Long Lances]], the [[Windblown]] and the [[Company of the Cat]]. Their envoys travel to [[Qarth]] and other free cities spreading false tales about Daenerys in order to gain support to cast her down. [[Grazdan mo Eraz]] travels to [[Volantis]] to persuade the [[Triarchs]] to send their fleet against Daenerys. Yunkai [[Siege of Astapor|besieges Astapor]] in an effort to topple the regime that had come into power after Daenerys had sacked that city.{{ref|aDwD|6}} A force of a hundred soldiers is commanded by the [[Girl General]].{{ref|aDwD|47}}

The Yunkai'i do not lack for commanders. After the [[Siege of Astapor]], on the march to Yunkai to re-supply, the [[Windblown]] observe the Yunkish lordlings scuttling everywhere. [[Yurkhaz zo Yunzak]] has the supreme command; he comes and goes in a palanquin so huge it requires forty slaves to carry it. Half of the generals have similar sounding names and telling one Ghiscari name from the other is an art few of the Windblown have mastered, so the Windblown give them mocking styles of their own devising: {{Ref|aDwD|25}}

Every one of the generals is wealthy and arrogant, and everyone is a captain and commander, answerable to no one but Yurkhaz zo Yunzak. They are disdainful of mere sellswords and prone to squabbles over precedence that are as endless as they are incomprehensible. In the time it takes the Windblown to ride three miles, the Yunkai’i have fallen two and a half miles behind. According to [[Beans]] they are:

Once encamped outside of [[Meereen]] [[Yezzan zo Qaggaz]] stands foremost amongst the Yunkish lords who favour honouring the peace with Meereen. Most of the other lords are only biding their time, waiting for the armies of [[Volantis]] to arrive. A few want to assault the city immediately, lest the Volantenes rob them of their glory and the best part of the plunder. Yezzan would have no part of that, nor would he consent to returning Meereen’s hostages by way of [[trebuchet]] – as the sellsword [[Bloodbeard]] had proposed.

Later, after the sudden death of Yurkhaz zo Yunzak, Yezzan zo Qaggaz has the most support for supreme command but he then dies of the [[pale mare]]. The council of masters have been unable to agree who their new commander should be so presently the Wise Masters are rotating the supreme command amongst themselves with the generals taking a turn each day.{{Ref|aDwD|59}} They provide the Windblown, and presumably their other sellsword companies, with a chart for the rotation.{{Ref|aDwD|60}}
