'''House Frey of the Crossing''' is a noble house of the [[Riverlands]]. Their main seat is the [[Twins]], a pair of castles on each bank of the Green Fork of the [[Trident]] that serves as a vital bridge across the river. The lord of the house is called the Lord of the Crossing. The strategic location of the Twins has allowed the house to become quite wealthy. Under their current lord, [[Lord Walder Frey|Walder Frey]], they have grown greatly in both size and power.

Their sigil is two blue towers united by a bridge on silver-grey, representing the Twins.<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 59|Chapter 59]], Catelyn</ref> Their motto is not mentioned in the books. Most Freys tend to share the weasely appearance of their common ancestor, Lord Walder.

==History==
House Frey is one of the younger houses in Westeros, dating back some six centuries when its founder was awarded lands and nobility. The founding Frey had a vision of buiding a great bridge spanning the Green Fork of the Trident and began its construction. His grandson ultimately finished the bridge's construction and built wooden keeps on both sides as well. Later generations replaced the timber keeps with identical stone keeps that were named the Twins. A large tower was constructed in the middle of the bridge and called the Water Tower.<ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 59|Chapter 59]], Catelyn</ref> The Twins' defensible construction and strategic location allowed the Freys to prosper by extracting tolls for passage across the river. The Freys grew into one of the richest and most powerful houses of the Trident. Their quick rise to prominence has caused other powerful houses to look down on them as upstarts.

After the [[War of Conquest]], House Frey joined the other Riverlords in swearing fealty to [[House Tully]]. During the long reign of Lord Walder, the house exploded in size as Walder and his descendants sired many offspring. Under Walder's leadership, the Freys exploited their advantages to the fullest, delaying their answer to House Tully's call during [[Robert's Rebellion]] and the [[War of the Five Kings]] until it served their purpose. Walder secured a marriage contract with [[Robb Stark]], linking the house to the King of the North, until Robb broke the contract. Walder secretly negotiated with House Lannister and betrayed the Starks and Tullys at the [[Red Wedding]]. Thereafter, Walder Frey's second son, [[Emmon Frey|Emmon]], was given the lordship of Riverrun of which House Tully was dispossessed - though not the overlordship over the Trident and the Riverlands, which now is held by [[Petyr Baelish]].

The fears of the [[Rhoynar]] were proven when the Valyrians destroyed the city of [[Arnar]], which had tried to resist them. Nymeria's host landed on the eastern coast of Dorne. Nymeria made common cause with [[Mors Martell]], the most powerful Dornish lord among the dozens if not hundreds of powerful lords controlling the patchwork of states in [[Dorne]]. With Nymeria's vast host at his command, Mors was able to unite the entire peninsula of Dorne under his rule. No less than seven self-styled rival Dornish kings were captured and sent to the [[Wall]] in golden fetters. In the Rhoynar style, he took the title "Prince" and introduced equal primogeniture. The fortress of [[Sunspear]] was made capital of Dorne, and [[House Martell]] has ruled ever since.

The '''Night's Watch''' is a military order dedicated to holding the [[Wall]], the immense fortification on the northern border of the [[Seven Kingdoms]], defending the realms of men from what lies beyond. The order's foundation dates back to the [[Age of Heroes]], at the time when the [[Others]] were pushed back. The men of Night's Watch wear only black.

==History==
The Night's Watch is probably the oldest order in the [[Seven Kingdoms]], as it survived the fall of the kingdoms of the [[First Men]], following the [[Andal Invasion]], and the [[War of Conquest]]. It was founded over 8,000 years ago, after the period known as the [[The Long Night|Long Night]]. Under cover of an endless night that lasted for a generation, the [[Others]] invaded from the [[Lands of Always Winter]], laying waste to much of Westeros, until the Others were finally defeated by the Night's Watch at the [[Battle for the Dawn]]. After having pushed back the threat, the Wall was built by [[Bran the Builder|Brandon the Builder]] in order to protect the Seven Kingdoms, should the Others ever return. Today, the Night’s Watch is beginning to be seen as only a way to avoid punishment; suitable less for knights now than for the dregs of Westeros, salvaged from dungeons by traveling recruiters. Disgraced nobles, bastards, and even the unwanted legitimate offspring of nobles are “encouraged” to take the black, making many of today’s Watch a surly and dissatisfied lot.

Those who come voluntarily are free to leave during any time of their training, but no man may leave after he has said vows. Any deserters are sentenced to death. Joffrey then paid some unsavory freerider to open [[Bran Stark|Bran]]’s throat. Tyrion is slightly drunk while Joffrey and [[Margaery Tyrell|Margaery]] are wed in the [[Great Sept of Baelor]], and continues drinking until night falls and it is time for the great wedding feast. As they enter the ballroom, the [[Olenna Redwyne|Queen of Thorns]] comes over to tell Sansa how beautiful she looks, and the old lady straightens out the hairnet that [[Dontos Hollard|Dontos]] had given her. Many at the wedding offer their condolences to Sansa on the loss of [[Catelyn Tully|her mother]] and [[Robb Stark|brother]].

During the feast, Joffrey calls for the royal jousters, and the party is entertained as two dwarves battle each other. Joffrey then mocks his uncle, commanding Tyrion to fight the dwarves as the king’s champion. Tyrion rebuffs him, but the King dumps a huge goblet of wine over Tyrion’s head. Joffrey commands Tyrion to serve him wine, and the hall erupts in laughter. Tyrion refills the goblet, and then the pigeon pie is brought out, and Joff calls for Ser [[Ilyn Payne|Ilyn’s]] sword. Sansa is horrified to learn that the King’s Justice no longer holds her father’s greatsword, [[Ice]].

Joff calls for more wine, Margaery at his side, and then begins to eat some of Tyrion’s pie. He commands Tyrion to serve him more wine, which Tyrion does. The King then begins to cough, unable to breath as he claws at his throat. Lady Olenna and Margaery call out for help, but the [[Kingsguard]] are powerless to do anything. As Grand Maester [[Pycelle]] calls for his potions, Tyrion dumps the rest of the wine out on the floor, and Joffrey, now turning black, seems to either reach for--or point at--his uncle. [[Sansa Stark|Sansa]] has slipped off during the confusion, but when [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] finally lets go of her son’s lifeless body, she commands the Kingsguard to arrest Tyrion for murdering the King.

==Synopsis==
The chapter begins from the perspective of a man warged into a wolf. The [[warg]] leads a small pack on a hunt. They hunt wildling fugitives and kill them.

After the kill the warg returns to his human body. He is [[Varamyr]] Sixskins and is seriously wounded. Like other wildlings, he had fled after [[Battle of Castle Black|their defeat]] at Castle Black. Varamyr burned when [[Orell|his eagle]] was killed and he lost his cloaks and rings. After he robbed a dead woman of her cloak, her son stabbed him. His companion, Thistle, has sewn the wound together but it is too serious and Varamyr knows he is dying.

He thinks back over his youth when he was still called Lump. As a youth he had warged into one of this father's dogs. The dogs killed [[Bump]], his little brother, and Varamyr remembers his brother looking at him and knowing. . . Because his father did not know which dog had killed Bump, he killed them all. When the last dog was killed, Varamyr - who had warged in him - screamed, which made his father understand Lump's nature. His parents then brought Lump to Haggon, another skin-changer. Haggon raised Lump and taught him a lot about skin-changers, although Lump did not adopt his morals, particularly regarding what Haggon describes as abominations: eating the flesh of man while warged inside an animal, mating with a beast while warged inside one, and warging into a human. When Haggon died, Varamyr drove him out of his wolf Greyskin to claim the wolf for himself.

Later Varamyr adopted more animals and became Varamyr Sixskins. He established himself as a kind of lord, taking tribute in food and using his animals to bring him women from nearby villages.

Varamyr wakes up from his memories when Thistle returns. As he knows that his body is dying, he turns on his companion to take over her body. She struggles and eventually manages to escape his control. As he dies, he half regrets trying to take over Thistles body, but also half regrets failing at that. He awakens in the body of one of his wolves. Later his pack discovers Thistle. Frozen blood clings to her - she has become a [[Wight]]. As her blue eyes stare into his wolf eyes he knows she sees him. . .

They have supplied a chart of the supreme commander rotation to their sellsword companies. The sellsword commanders, such as the [[Tattered Prince]], find this amusing and feel it is just another example of the incompetence of the [[Yunkai]] nobles when it comes to battle.

Tyrion is less than pleased and leaves the table. He returns to his camp and finds the prostitute [[Shae]] ([[w:Sibel Kekilli|Sibel Kekilli]]) whom [[Bronn]] ([[w:Jerome Flynn|Jerome Flynn]]) found for him at his request. As the three of them swap stories, Tyrion reveals that when he was sixteen, he had married a woman named [[Tysha]] that Jaime and he had rescued. When his father Tywin had discovered it, he had made [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]] confess that she was actually a hired prostitute and Tywin then made Tyrion watch as he gave her to his guards, paying her one silver for each man. Later, Tyrion is awakened by Bronn as a Stark force approaches. He leaves his tent dressed in armor and orders the hill tribes to combat, but is trampled by them as they rush to war. When Daenerys pleads with her to do something, Drogo's bloodriders will not hear of it, and want the healer killed. Mirri tells Daenerys that there is a blood magic spell she knows, but insists that "death is cleaner". Daenerys orders her use the spell, and even when Mirri warns her that only death can pay for life, Daenerys is oblivious and commands Mirri to heal Drogo. They lead in the ''Khal''{{'s}} horse and slit its throat, and then Mirri bids them all to leave the tent and not enter. Outside, Drogo's bloodriders come to put an end to Mirri's spell, and Ser [[Jorah Mormont]] fights and kills the rebellious bloodrider [[Qotho]] (w:Dar Salim|Dar Salim), who earlier shoved Danaerys to the ground, bringing on premature labour. As the fight ends, Jorah carries Daenerys into Drogo's tent to seek Mirri's help as a midwife.

Ned refuses but finally relents after Varys tells him that his daughter, [[Sansa]]'s (Sophie Turner) life is also at stake. [[Arya]], who has been living as a beggar in the streets of [[King's Landing]] since her escape from the Lannisters, learns a crowd is gathering at the [[Great Sept of Baelor]], where her father will be judged before the gods. With Sansa, Cersei, Joffrey and the [[Small Council]] looking over him, Ned confesses to treason and swears fealty to Joffrey in front of the crowd. Satisfied, Sansa and Cersei ask Joffrey to spare Ned as promised, but Joffrey breaks his promise and orders Ned beheaded. Upon his brother Daeron's death, Baelor is said to have walked the [[Boneway]] barefoot to make peace with [[Dorne]]. It is also said that he saved his cousin [[Aemon Targaryen|Aemon the Dragonknight]] from a snake pit, where he was bitten many times by the vipers whose venom could not kill him because of his faith in the Seven; this tale may simply be a metaphorical version of his visit to Dorne, referring to Dorne itself as a "snake pit," and the Dornish, "vipers." When Duncan attacked Prince [[Aerion Brightfire]] to defend an innocent [[Tanselle|puppeteer]], Prince Baelor had a private word with Duncan and advised him. The next day Baelor sat together with Lord Tyrell and Lord Ashford in judgment of Duncan. Prince Aerion demanded a [[Trial of Seven]] which was granted.

With the help of [[Aegon V|Egg]] and Ser [[Raymun Fossoway]] Duncan was able to recruit five men to fight for him. They needed one more and because Baelor believed Duncan, he fought for him even though his nephew was the accuser. His brother, Maekar, was furious but Baelor said:

In the [[Pentos|Free City of Pentos]], Illyrio and [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]] arranged to marry the thirteen-year-old Daenerys to [[Khal Drogo]], a great leader among the [[Dothraki]] people. Viserys had hoped to then use the thousands of men in Drogo's ''[[khalasar]]'' to conquer the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. Despite Daenerys's fear and apprehension, she had no choice but to accept her brother's will and wed Drogo. At her wedding, the exiled knight, [[Jorah Mormont]], pledged his service to Daenerys. He eventually became her closest companion.{{Ref|aGoT|3}} Two of Daenerys's wedding gifts were a magnificent [[The Silver|silver filly]] and a set of three petrified [[Dragon|dragon eggs]]. At first, Daenerys was terrified of her husband Drogo and the Dothraki, but she came to love her husband and lose her fear not only of the Dothraki, but of her brother as well. With Viserys death, Drogo was now uninterested invading [[Westeros]]. However this changes when an assassin attempted to poison Daenerys by selling her a cask of poisoned wine. Khal Drogo is enraged when he learns of the death threat on his wife and son and vows to invade Westeros in vengence, something no Khal has ever done before. During a raid Daenerys see's a young girl [[Eroeh]] being raped by riders and orders her men to stop the rape and save the girl she stops the rapes of several other captives and takes them under her protection. In the raid Drogo was wounded, and Daenerys instructs one of the newly captured slaves a [[Lhazar|Lhazareen]] priestess, a maegi, named [[Mirri Maz Duur]], she saved from being rape and possible murder at the hands of Drogo's men, to treat the wound. The wound festered though and Drogo soon became too weak to ride.{{Ref|aGoT|61}} Daenerys begged Mirri to save her husband, ignoring the consequence of [[Magic|blood magic]] The rite went ahead, however the maegi betrays her, leaving Drogo a brain-dead husk and slaying Rhaego in the womb.{{Ref|aGoT|64}} Daenerys ends Drogo's life herself and is abandoned by most of his ''khalasar''.{{Ref|aGoT|69}}

She orders Mirri Maz Duur burned on Drogo's funeral pyre and enters the flames herself with her dragon eggs. Daenerys and what little remains of Drogo's ''khalasar'' wander in the direction of the star to a desolate area known as the [[Red Waste]] where they find an ancient, abandoned city, which Daenerys names [[Vaes Tolorro]]. There they recover from the deadly ravages of the desert while Daenerys sends out scouts in all directions. One scout returns with three emissaries from the great city of [[Qarth]]. Daenerys accompanies them to Qarth, where she learns of King [[Robert Baratheon]]'s death and the war in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. She tries to secure aid from the merchant emissary [[Xaro Xhoan Daxos]] in conquering [[Westeros]], but the merchants of Qarth are only interested in obtaining her dragons. {{Ref|aCoK|12}}{{Ref|aCoK|27}}

He also kissed her and professed his love for her.{{Ref|aSoS|9}} Once in Astapor, Daenerys began to have doubts about using slaves, still she agrees to purchases an army of every Unsullied in the ciry in exchange for her Dragon [[Drogon]]. She is given a slave [[Missandei]] as a gift from the Good Masters. Dany accepts, but she then frees Missandei. Dany tells Missandei that she can leave Dany's service whenever she wishes, but Missandei remains close and loyal to Dany.

After taking control of the Unsullied, Dany reclaims Drogon and commands him to use his fires against the Astapori leaders. She then uses the Unsullied to [[Sack of Astapor|conquer the city]]. After the fighting, she proclaims all Astapori slaves free, including her Unsullied, giving her the name ''Breaker of Shackles'', or ''Breaker of Chains''. The Unsullied and many new [[Freedmen]] choose to follow her in her future battles. After forming a council to rule Astapor, she sets out for the next great slave city [[Yunkai]].{{Ref|aSoS|27}}

[[Yunkai]] hires two sellsword companies, the [[Stormcrows]] and the [[Second Sons]], in addition to conscripting a force of some four thousand slave soldiers. Daenerys parleys with the captains of the companies, hoping to convince them to switch sides. Her arguments convince one of the Stormcrows' commanders, [[Daario Naharis]], to assassinate his colleagues and pledge the company to Daenerys. To the Second Sons, Daenerys offers a great store of wine as tribute then [[Battle of Yunkai|attacks]] them in the night while they are drunk and sleeping. With the Stormcrows' betrayal and the Second Sons' drunkenness, Yunkai's slave army is unable to withstand Daenerys's Unsullied. During her [[Siege of Meereen]], she sends them on a covert suicide mission through the sewers, half hoping that they will die in the attempt. The mission succeeds and wins the city with minimal blood. Barristan humbly submits to his Queen's judgment and is forgiven. Jorah stubbornly continues to insist that he had done nothing wrong, and Daenerys is forced to banish him from her service, despite her desire to pardon him.{{Ref|aSoS|57}}

Having captured Meereen, Dany turns her eyes toward [[Westeros]]. Through talks with Barristan about her homeland and its history, however, she learns that there is much she does not know about ruling. Upon hearing that Astapor and Yunkai cannot maintain the peace she had hoped to bring, she resolves to bring order to Slaver's Bay before leaving it behind. By this time, she is close on seventeen years.

Dany struggles as ruler of [[Meereen]], mainly due to the constant threats surrounding her. A portion of Meereen's former slaving families who call themselves the [[Sons of the Harpy]] fight a shadow war with her followers, attacking lone freedmen or [[Unsullied]] in the black of night and drawing a harpy nearby with the man's blood.{{Ref|aDwD|2}} The sons have also scrawled graffiti on the walls of Meereen in blood promising a death to the families of any who serve the Dragon Queen. In Meereen, men traditionally wear their oiled black and red hair in varying shapes in homage to [[Ghis|Ghiscari]] culture. The Meereenese who now serve Dany shave their heads, symbolizing the abandonment of old Meereen to serve the new. These men are known as [[Shavepates]], and are led by [[Skahaz mo Kandaq]], known as ''the Shavepate''. Another of her Meereenese councilors is the seneschal, [[Reznak mo Reznak]].

Three fighting companies were also formed by Daenerys, their members comprised from her freeman. The company names are [[Mother's Men]]; The Company of the [[Free Brothers]]; and the [[Stalwart Shields]]. They have been receiving their training in arms from [[Grey Worm]].

Daenery's dragons have grown wilder, hunting sheep and livestock. Eventually a petitioner comes to her, presenting the bones of his six-year-old girl daughter "[[Hazzea]]", claiming the "[[Drogon|winged shadow]]" had killed her.{{Ref|aDwD|2}} Prompted by this, Dany has her Unsullied capture the dragons using nets and chains and lock them below ground to prevent any more such killings. In a closed fighting pit, [[Viserion]] and [[Rhaegal]] are captured (though not without several Unsullied men dying), but Drogon escapes and disappears. During this time, she has a vision of [[Quaithe]] that offers her prophetic advice, most specifically warning her not to trust her seneschal.{{Ref|aDwD|11}}

Daenerys has enemies outside Meereen as well as in. Since she ended the slave trade in [[Slaver's Bay]], several of the [[Free Cities]] that rely upon the slave trade of the slave cities to fuel their economy have promised help to the [[Yunkai]] to bring her down. Yunkai has hired sellsword legions such as the [[Long Lances]], the [[Company of the Cat]] and the [[Windblown]]. Legions have also arrived from [[New Ghis]]. The Yunkai host first takes [[Astapor]] from [[Cleon|Cleon the Butcher King]], its most recent ruler, and puts thousands of its inhabitants to the sword or sends them again into slavery.{{Ref|aDwD|25}} An escaped rider who managed to flee in the confusion of the siege brings word of this to Dany in Meereen. Unfortunately word is not the only thing he brings, as he is infected with the [[bloody flux]].{{Ref|aDwD|30}} Several other Astapori citizens flee to Meereen, bringing the disease with them.

The merchant emissary [[Xaro Xhoan Daxos]] arrives from [[Qarth]] bearing a gift of thirteen ships in exchange for Dany's abandon of Slaver's Bay and departure for [[Westeros]]. Dany wishes to go, but the thirteen ships are not enough to take her entire army of Unsullied, Dothraki, sellswords and freedmen. The Shavepates beg her not to go. If she does, they who served her and their families will die by the Sons of the Harpy. She refuses Xaro, which prompts [[Qarth]] to join the Yunkai against her.{{Ref|aDwD|16}} Deaths of freedmen and Unsullied continue to grow nightly, and several former freed slave women are raped by the Sons of the Harpy before having their throats slit open. Daenerys takes the children of several Meereenese families of dubious loyalty as [[Cupbearers of Daenerys Targaryen|Cupbearers]] in name, but hostages in truth in hopes that would stop the killing. The killings only continue though and Daenerys refuses to harm the child hostages. In despair and loneliness, Dany takes [[Daario Naharis]] as a lover. A plan is put to her by the [[Graces|Meereenese priestess]], the Green Grace [[Galazza Galare]], suggesting that Dany should wed the Meereenese noble [[Hizdahr zo Loraq]] to bring peace. Dany agrees, on the condition that Hizdahr can promise her 90 days of peace. Hizdahr agrees.{{Ref|aDwD|23}} [[Ben Plumm|Brown Ben Plumm]], captain of the [[Second Sons]], learns that Dany can no longer control her dragons, and takes his company go over to the Yunkai.

At this point, [[Quentyn Martell]] of [[Dorne]] arrives to make a marriage claim, but is rejected because Dany has already promised to wed Hizdahr. After Hizdahr zo Loraq succeeds at keeping his promise, Dany weds him.{{Ref|aDwD|43}} Under his direction, Dany, much to her disgust, suggests peace terms with Yunkai. She promises if they leave Meereen and don't enslave any of the former slaves she freed, she won't disrupt the slave trade of Slaver's Bay any further. The Yunkai agree.{{Ref|aDwD|50}} To mark the occasion, the [[fighting pits]] are reopened and several gladiators (who freely agreed to compete) battle in the arena of [[Daznak's Pit]]. During the event, Drogon appears, drawn to the screams of the crowd and the smell of death. He kills a boar in the arena, but is then attacked by the animal handler [[Harghaz]]. Dany, seeing her "child" in pain, runs out in the arena to him as she sees other pit fighters going to kill the dragon. Dany manages to mount the dragon and ride him out of the arena.{{Ref|aDwD|52}} Many in Meereen suspect that she is dead.{{Ref|aDwD|55}} She is alive with Drogon, however, thousands of leagues away. She and her dragon are eventually discovered by the ''khalasar'' of [[Jhaqo|Khal Jhaqo]].{{Ref|aDwD|71}}

A strong man could wake up healthy on the morning and die by the evening, so swiftly did the plague strike. while [[Dorne]] and [[the Vale of Arryn]] did not suffer from the Great Spring Sickness, as they closed off their access roads and their ports to all travelers.<ref>[[The Sworn Sword]], p.121</ref>

The plague did not care for status and killed people high-born or low, including King [[Daeron II|Daeron the Good]] and his two most immediate heirs, Princes [[Valarr Targaryen|Valarr]] and [[Matarys Targaryen|Matarys]], as well as the [[High Septon]], a third of the [[Most Devout]], and nearly all of the [[Silent Sisters]] in King's Landing.
