==Description==
The city has large white walls encircling it, though they are cracked and crumbling. There are also wall towers. The city gates are broken. {{ref|aCoK|12}}

The city is a maze of narrow, crooked alleys. The buildings are built close together, their facades blank and chalky. All buildings are windowless. Some of the houses have long fallen into rubble, and other buildings seem damaged by fire. The remnants of a gutted palace stand before a windswept plaza. Devilgass grows between the paving stones. {{ref|aCoK|12}}

A marble plinth stands at the crossroads between six alleys. But no statue stands above the plinth. The [[Dothraki]] are presumed to have visited the city, taking its statues to [[Vaes Dothrak]].{{ref|aCoK|12}}

The city has vegetation. There are grapevines, fig trees, peach trees, and other fruit trees in the abandoned gardens, hidden behind closed doors. There is enough grass to sustain a small herd of [[horse]]s. Its wells contain pure and cold water. {{ref|aCoK|12}} There are also small animals in the city, most notably flies and red scorpions. {{ref|aCoK|12}}

There are remnants of the previous inhabitants in the city: the skulls of the unburied dead, bleached and broken. The twisty alleys contain old bronze coins, bits of purple glass, stone flagons with handles carved like snakes. {{ref|aCoK|12}}

To the south of the city, the barren [[Red Waste]] continues until one reaches a bleak ocean shore and the "[[poison water]]". This area contains only swirling sand, wind-scoured rocks, and plants with sharp thorns. The bones of an immense [[dragon]] can also be found there. {{ref|aCoK|12}}

To the southwest lie two more abandoned cities, Vaes Orvik and Vaes Shirosi<ref>[[The Lands of Ice and Fire]], Central Essos</ref>. Similar to Vaes Tolorro but smaller in size. One city is surrounded by a ring of skulls, mounted on rusted iron spears. The second city seems more inviting to explorers. While exploring it, [[Aggo]] finds an iron bracelet. The bracelet is set with an uncut fire [[[[w:Opal|Opal]]. There are scrolls within the city, dry and crumbling, not suitable for transportation. According to legend, the Stepstones are a remnant of a land-bridge, known as the Arm of Dorne, linking [[Westeros]] and [[Essos]] together. More than ten thousand years ago the [[First Men]] used that land-bridge to cross into what is today known as [[Dorne]] to begin their invasion of Westeros. The [[greenseer]]s of the [[children of the forest]] used magic to shatter the land-bridge into an archipelago named the Stepstones, located between the [[Broken Arm]] and the [[Disputed Lands]].

[[Myr]] and [[Lys]] of the [[Free Cities]] have constantly engaged in wars over possession of the Stepstones. Several times in its history, the [[Seven Kingdoms]] has also fought for control of them. The '''Free Cities''' are a group of nine city-states grouped along the western coast of the [[Essos|eastern continent]]. They trade and interact frequently with the [[Seven Kingdoms]] of [[Westeros]].

==Geography==
The nine city-states composing the Free Cities lie [[Across the Narrow Sea]], east of [[Westeros]], on the western side of the eastern continent, mostly on islands or along the coast. There are significant differences between the geography of the various cities, from the thick forests around Qohor, to the rolling hills of Norvos, to the tiny islands of Braavos. Mountains to the east separate the coast from the plains of the [[Dothraki Sea]], though gaps in the mountain range provide the [[Dothraki]] people some access to the Free Cities. To the north are the [[Shivering Sea]] and [[Ibben]], an island inhabited by sealskin-clad whalers. To the south are [[Slaver's Bay]] and a series of straits leading to the [[Jade Sea]] in the far east.

==The Nine Free Cities==
Although the Free Cities are distinct states they share a common ancestry in being former Valyrian colonies (except for Braavos, founded by refugees). Some, like Braavos, have unique and independent cultures, while others, like Pentos and Myr, share many cultural traits. Though all nine Free Cities speak [[High Valyrian|Valyrian]], their dialects have changed the language so much that it is almost like nine different [[languages]].

[[Tywin Lannister]] always held the Free Cities in contempt, saying that they fight with coins instead of swords adding that gold has its uses, but wars are won with iron.

Pentos is a major trading port on a bay of the western coast. Dominated by an architecture of square brick towers it is headed by a Prince that is chosen by the ''de facto'' rulers of the city, known as Magisters. Khalasars occasionally make their way this far from the [[Dothraki Sea]], but the Pentoshi are spared much of the raiding and invasions by paying tribute to their khals. Men from Pentos wear dyed and forked beards. As in many Free Cities, slavery is outlawed, but the wealthy and powerful members of the city have the ability to flout these laws by keeping servants collared in bronze.

Qohor's city guard has been comprised solely of [[Unsullied]] eunuch slave soldiers ever since the [[Battle of Qohor|Battle of the Three Thousand]], when 3,000 Unsullied soldiers successfully defended the city against over 25,000 [[Dothraki]] horsemen. Guardsmen tie braids of human hair to their spears to commemorate the Dothraki cutting their braids in salute to Qohor's defenders.

The climate is fairly mild. Norvosi can be recognized by their dyed and upswept mustaches. The city is run by a council of magisters that are known to pay tribute to passing Dothraki khalasars. It is also home to a group of [[bearded priests of Norvos|bearded priests]] that train elite guardsmen. These guardsmen swear oaths of duty and consider themselves wedded to their distinctive long axes.

Myr is a hub of trade in both slaves and their signature green nectar wines. Myr frequently fights over control of the [[Disputed Lands]].

A coastal city-state ruled by an Archon, Tyrosh is infamous for its avarice.  Traders deal extensively in slaves and Tyroshi pear brandy. The city features an abundance of pleasure houses, but they are not as highly regarded as those in Lys. Tyroshi master armorsmiths make intricate armor in fantastic shapes. Tyrosh is a popular center for the hiring of sellswords. The city is often drawn into the ongoing conflicts over the [[Disputed Lands]] and the [[Stepstones]]. The Tyroshi often wear forked beards and pointed mustaches dyed in bright colors.

At the start of the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]], the Band of Nine conquered Tyrosh and put Alequo Adarys the Goldentongued into power. Six years after the Band was crushed at the Stepstones, Alequo was deposed.

Volantis is sometimes drawn into conflicts over the [[Disputed Lands]].

The northern-most islands of the group have been mapped, but it is not known how far south the island chain extends. The mapped portion of the chain includes three large islands and numerous smaller ones.

The three largest islands, from north to south, are Walano, Omboru and Jhala. The Smiling Sea divides Walano and Omboru, and the Indigo Straits divide Omboru from Jhala. Walano contains the capital of the Summer Islands, Lotus Port, as well as the towns of Last Lament and Tall Tress Town. Jhala contains the settled valleys of Red Flower Vale and Sweet Lotus vale, including the city of Ebonhead. He sought refuge in [[King's Landing]] and spent many years petitioning King [[Robert Baratheon]] for military assistance in retaking his homeland. Robert was attracted by the idea of invading the Summer Islands, but his advisors convinced him it was a foolhardy venture. Despite this negative response Xho remains in exile in King's Landing.

Thus the continent stretches for about 3,000 miles from north to south and for some 900 miles at its widest point east to west.

Its eastern coast borders on the [[narrow sea]]; across its waters lies the eastern continent of [[Essos]] and the island chain known as the [[Stepstones]]. To the south is located the [[Summer Sea]], and within it the [[Summer Islands]].

They have adopted many Rhoynish customs as well, including equal primogeniture.

Dorne was the only kingdom in Westeros to successfully resist Aegon's conquest. It joined the Seven Kingdoms through marriage over a century after the Targaryen invasion. This accomplishment has allowed Dorne to retain a small measure of independence. Lords of the ruling [[House Martell]] still style themselves "Prince" and "Princess" in the Rhoynish fashion. Westeros's climate shifts from arid and dry desert climate in the furthest south to cold and harsh Winters in the north and icy wasteland in the [[Lands of Always Winter]] in the furthest north.

Westeros and [[Essos]] both experience extremely long seasons of varying length, usually lasting at least a couple of years each. The [[maesters]] try to predict the length of the seasons, monitoring the temperature and days length, to advise on when to plant and when to harvest and how much food to store. However, given the random nature of the seasons, this is not something that can be relied on.

At the beginning of [[A Game of Thrones]] the continent has enjoyed an unusually long decade-long summer of peace and plenty and many fear that an equally long and harsh winter will follow. The end of the long summer comes at the outset of [[A Feast for Crows]], with the arrival of the [[White Ravens]] from the citadel. The official announcement of winter comes at the very end of [[A Dance with Dragons]].

It’s noted that winter means that the days grow shorter. It’s not simply that the weather becomes really cold or really warm, but it was explicitly stated by [[George R. R. At its height, Ghis fielded highly disciplined legions of lockstep soldiers that were reputed to be nearly unbeatable on the battlefield. The architecture of Ghis was dominated by massive brick towers and pyramids built on the back of slave labor. Its symbol was the harpy, a fanged woman with leathery wings for arms, the legs of an eagle, and the tail of scorpion, clutching a thunderbolt in her talons.

The Ghiscari Empire fell over 5,000 years ago after warring with the upstart city of Valyria, losing a series of five wars with Valyria before toppling. Despite its wealth and nearly invincible legions, Ghis could not stand against Valyria's ultimate weapon, [[dragons]].

As the Ghiscari Empire collapsed, the city of Ghis itself toppled into ruin. Though the fall extinguished most of the original Ghiscari bloodline, the surviving populations of the Empire rebuilt the area from the wreckage. Three major cities rose into prominence: [[Astapor]], [[Yunkai]] and [[Meereen]]. These cities established themselves as a hub of the global slave trade and became extremely wealthy. Their citizens lived in a state of stagnant excess until the eastern military campaigns of [[Daenerys Targaryen]] conquered all three cities.

==Culture and Economy==
Although very little Ghiscari culture survived the Empire's collapse, the modern people of Slaver's Bay took great pride in their Ghiscari heritage. The cities maintained Ghis's symbol of the harpy, and freeborn citizens called themselves sons of the harpy, though they replaced the thunderbolt in the her claw with open manacles. The tongue of the Ghiscari was largely forgotten. Most modern Ghiscari speak in the language of their conquerors, High Valyrian, twisted by a growling accent and peppered with slaver's argot. However, modern Ghiscari continue to write with their unique glyphs. Ethnically, modern Ghiscari are a mongrel breed with very little of the original Ghiscari blood. Due to there pampered lifestyles they tend to be broad and fleshy, with amber skin and dark hair and eyes. They often have a mixture of wiry red and black hair, a feature unique to the region. In spite of the weakness of their connection to Ghis, Slaver's Bay holds itself as a continuation of Ghis's greatness centuries after the fall of its ancient rival, Valyria.

Slave trade was the dominant industry of Slaver's Bay, and the cities' slave traders formed their ruling aristocracy. The slavers of Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen called themselves as the Good, Wise and Great Masters respectively, and were taken to dress in ''tokars'', a toga-like garment that only the freeborn may wear. The value of the material used to make a tokar's fringes indicated the wealth and rank of the Master wearing it. Slavers and their families lived in opulent luxury, floating on pleasure barges at dusk and hosting elaborate festivals honoring their history at night. Slaves, on the other hand, often endured brutal treatment.

The cities shared a peaceful rivalry, avoiding war at all costs, and preferring to pay the khalasars of [[Dothraki]] that passed by instead of fighting them. Due to the wealth of the average free citizen, the cities' professional armies were filled with wealthy sons of slavers who regarded their posts as little more than an opportunity for theatrics. Wearing colorful cloth armor and hair teased into large, outlandish shapes, the citizen soldiers of Slaver's Bay were ineffective fighters. Thus, the cities relied heavily on slave soldiers and mercenary companies for their protection. While most slave soldiers were relatively poor and untrained, the eunuch [[Unsullied]] soldiers of Astapor have a well-earned reputation for effectiveness.

==The Cities of Slaver's Bay==
The three principle cities located in Slaver's Bay are Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen, also known the as the 'Great slaver cities'.

===Astapor===

Astapor was famed as the only place in the world that the [[Unsullied]] can be purchased. These slave soldiers commanded a huge investment and earned the most profitable of returns for the Good Masters of Astapor. The city itself was ancient and dilapidated, built from crumbling red bricks that are said to be colored by the slaves that died laying them. The ubiquitous brick dust can sting the eyes, causing freeborn women to wear veils. The city is dominated by massive stepped pyramids, some four hundred feet high, that line the waterfront of the bay. The Plaza of Pride served as an open air slave market, a marshaling area for the Unsullied, and a community gathering place. During the midday heat, the brick streets can become unbearably hot, making them largely deserted during the day. In the evenings, the slavers lit silk lanterns on every terrace and played soft music as they sailed on their pleasure barges.

The Good Masters of Astapor were particularly cruel to their slaves. Fighting pits featured bloodsports pitting children against animals. Unruly slaves were flayed alive. However, the Good Masters' crowning achievement was their Unsullied, created through a brutal conditioning process that systematically dehumanized young slave boys to turn them into unfeeling fighting machines. Unlike the other cities of Slaver's Bay, Astapor relied on no additional mercenaries of slave levies for its protection. The city's unsold Unsullied defended it against any threats.

The city was conquered by [[Daenerys Targaryen]] after she purchased the city's entire population of Unsullied and sent them against the helpless slavers. Daenerys set up a new government headed by a healer, a priest and a scholar. After she left, however, a former butcher named [[Cleon]] seized control of the city and reinstated slavery, only with the former slaves as the new masters. Cleon the Butcher King sent Daenerys gifts and wedding invitations, though Daenerys did not approve of his rule.

===Yunkai===

The smallest of the three cities, Yunkai was known for both its fighting pits and its pleasure houses, both of which turned out slaves at a brisk pace. The city is very similar to Astapor in architecture except for its smaller size and its use of yellow brick in its buildings instead of red. The slavers of Yunkai were known as the Wise Masters. The city relied on its relatively untrained slave army and whatever [[mercenary#Sellsword|mercenary companies]] it could buy.

After the fall of Astapor, Yunkai girded itself with a slave army of approximately 4,000 and purchased the services of the [[Second Sons]] and [[Stormcrows]], totaling over 1,000 sellswords. Daenerys Targaryen lured the Stormcrows to her service and ambushed the Second Sons, scattering them. The Wise Masters surrendered and released all of their slaves.

Meereen is unique among the Ghiscari cities in that it is filled with many temples. The slavers of Meereen are known as the Great Masters. They field a force of lancers equipped in traditionally extravagant Ghiscari fashion with scales of copper and lances as long as fourteen feet.

After the fall of Astapor and Yunkai, Meereen utilized a scorched earth defense against Daenerys, razing the land surrounding the city and nailing slave children onto posts with their fingers pointing to the city. Outside the city's gates, [[Oznak zo Pahl|a champion]] challenged Daenerys's forces and was slain by [[Belwas|Strong Belwas]]. In order to avoid an extended [[Siege of Meereen|siege]], Daenerys had a small group of her men infiltrate the city and free the gladiator slaves of the fighting pits.
