Though mild-mannered, Roose is cold, patient, calculating, and capable of great cruelty. He possesses a cold cunning, a skill for strategy, and a calculating nature. Robb summons Roose to aid in retaking [[Moat Cailin]] and [[the North]] from the [[ironborn]]. On the march north to [[the Twins]], Roose takes his time when crossing the Trident and allows his rearguard to be [[Battle of the Ruby Ford|ambushed]] by [[Gregor Clegane]]. On the other side, he leaves Stark loyalists to guard the river, taking only Dreadfort and [[Karhold]] men with him, the latter incensed by [[Robb Stark]]'s execution of Lord Rickard. After arriving at the Twins for [[Edmure Tully]]'s wedding with [[Roslin Frey]], Roose discusses with Robb the disastrous [[Battle of Duskendale]], in which joint [[House Lannister|Lannister]] and [[House Tyrell|Tyrell]] forces annihilated the force of [[Helman Tallhart]] and [[Robett Glover]]. After [[Moat Cailin]] surrenders to Ramsay thanks to a browbeaten [[Theon Greyjoy]], Roose meets his son and introduces him to his fiancee, "Arya Stark" (actually [[Jeyne Poole]]). Roose is greatly displeased by his son's actions, stating as much to Theon at [[Barrowton]], where the northern lords are to gather for Ramsay and Jeyne's wedding. Roose thinks that Ramsay is too loud and obnoxious. After he hears that [[Stannis Baratheon]] has [[Retaking of Deepwood Motte|retaken Deepwood Motte]], Roose decides to have the wedding moved from Barrowton to [[Winterfell]] in order to bait Stannis.{{Ref|aDwD|32}} He is accompanied by his new wife, Walda.

Upon arriving at Winterfell, Roose finds the ruined castle now a refuge of more then two dozen squatters. When he tells them he will be merciful if they serve well, they are used for a labour force in rebuilding Winterfell. After the work is completed Roose has them all hanged; true to his word he is merciful and does not flay a one.

Despite being named [[Warden of the North]], Roose's support among the northern lords is grudging. The first to declare for him are the [[House Dustin|Dustins]] and [[House Ryswell|Ryswells]], to whom he is related through his second wife, [[Bethany Bolton|Bethany]]. The faction of [[House Umber]] led by [[Hother Umber|Hother Whoresbane]] declares for him since the [[Greatjon]] is in Frey captivity, and the [[House Cerwyn|Cerwyns]], [[House Locke|Lockes]], and [[House Manderly|Manderlys]] send men as well. [[Arnolf Karstark]], the Karhold castellan who publicly declared for Stannis, is secretly in league with Roose and awaits the moment to turn his cloak.{{ref|ADWD|44}}

Roose, Ramsay and the Bolton army remain at Winterfell awaiting the [[Siege of Winterfell|attack]] of Stannis Baratheon's host. Ancient Lorath was inhabited by a people known as the [[mazemakers]] who created mazes in the islands and on mainland Essos to the south. The mazemakers were followed first by a race of [[hairy men]] similar to the [[Ibben]]ese, and then by the [[Andals]], with each island having its own king. The Andal king [[Qarlon|Qarlon the Great]] united the Lorathi isles and conquered some of mainland Essos, but Qarlon's kingdom was destroyed in the [[Scouring of Lorath]] by an alliance of [[Norvos]] and the [[dragonlord]]s of the [[Valyrian Freehold]]. The island was completely unpopulated afterwards, and thus modern Lorathi have no descent from these prior civilizations.

Valyrian worshippers of the Blind God [[Boash]] founded a temple and settled in the mazes of Lorath 1,322 years before the [[Doom of Valyria]]. Although the worship of Boash gradually vanished, the land was colonized by Ibbenese, Andals, and Valyrian refugees, who founded three villages which grew into a city on Lorath, the largest isle. The colonists eventually rose in rebellion against the priesthood of Boash, who had grown corrupt and rich off the taxes they exacted on their subjects. Only a few acolytes who fled to the temple maze of Lorassyon survived. The Cult of Boash died out over a thousand years before the War of the Five Kings (~700 BC, around 700 years after the cult settled in Lorath).

Afterward Lorath became a freehold, ruled by a council of [[Princes of Lorath|three princes]]. The Harvest Prince is chosen by a vote of all those who owned land on the islands, the Fisher Prince by all those who owned ships, and the Prince of the Streets by the acclamation of the free men of the city. Once chosen, each prince serves for life. The princes continue to sit today, though their titles are purely ceremonial; the true authority now lies in a council of [[magister]]s made up of nobles, priests, and merchants.

The relative isolation of Lorath led them to be little involved in the [[Century of Blood]], save for those who sold their swords to [[Braavos]] and [[Norvos]].

Though possessing a large fleet of fishing vessels, the Lorathi build few warships and have little military power. Few Lorathi leave the islands and fewer still make their way to Westeros. According to myth, the children attempted to use Moat Cailin to hold back the flood of invading First Men by calling upon their nameless gods from the Children's Tower to send down the "[[hammer of the waters]]" to break the lands of Westeros in two by shattering [[the Neck]] and completely separating the [[North]] from the South, in the same manner they shattered the Arm of Dorne centuries earlier. However, the children failed in the attempt and only succeeded in flooding the Neck, creating bogs and swamps.

However, the cataclysm proved the strength of their power and may have proved instrumental in bringing the First Men to agree to the peace terms that ended hostilities between the two races.

The conflict was between [[House Targaryen]] and the [[Blackfyre Pretenders|pretenders]] of [[House Blackfyre]] and resulted in open civil war that divided the [[Seven Kingdoms]] over the [[Iron Throne]].

King Aegon IV publicly bestowed the Targaryen sword of kings, [[Blackfyre]], on his bastard [[Daemon I Blackfyre|Daemon Waters]] instead of his legitimate son, [[Daeron II Targaryen|Daeron Targaryen]]. Aegon IV legitimised all of his bastards on his deathbed. His noble bastards were called the [[Great Bastards]], the most notable of whom was Daemon, a great warrior and wielder of the Targaryen Blackfyre. He took the name Daemon Blackfyre from the sword.

In {{date|184}}, Aegon IV was succeeded by [[Daeron II Targaryen]]. King Daeron was a cultured, scholarly man and reigned over a sophisticated court, attended by [[maesters]] and learned men, which was perceived as effete and overly-refined, not pleasing to many of his more martial courtiers and nobles. His marriage to the [[Dorne|Dornish]] princess [[Myriah Martell|Myriah]] introduced foreign influences and manners to the court, further adding to the displeasure with his reign. In addition to the aggravation of the Dornish influences at court, popular rumours held that King Aegon IV's sister-wife [[Naerys Targaryen|Naerys]] had shared her affections with their other brother, Prince [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Viserys II)|Aemon Targaryen]], leading to the possibility that Daeron II was not the son of Aegon IV.

After more than a decade of building tension, the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]] finally broke out in {{date|195}} engulfing all of Westeros, the seeds of this rebellion were planted early on, but it took years for them to bear fruit. There was no final insult, no great wrong that led Daemon Blackfyre to declare a war against Daeron. If it truly was love for Daenerys as some whisper why did Daemon wait eight years before rebelling. Especially since his wife [[Rohanne of Tyrosh]] had already given him seven sons and a daughter, while Daenerys had already had several children by [[Maron Martell|Prince Maron]]. {{ref|twoiaf| Daeron II}}

In truth the war broke out because the seeds had found fertile ground because of Aegon the Unworthy. Aegon hated the Dornish and many Lords and Houses who spent centuries at war with the [[Dorne]] longed for the return of those days. Many great warriors looked on dismay on a realm no longer at war and did not like a peaceful, scholarly king who filled the court with learned men, Septons, Dornish and women. They looked at Daemon and saw a Warrior. Many lords and knights with grievances against the [[Iron Throne]] soon sought Daemon out.

Other factors was Daemons growing resentment at having the status of a bastard, and what it meant. Another was that he gained councillors who urged him to it.<ref>So Spake Martin: [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Month/2004/05/ Private Meeting (Santa Fe, NM)], May 4, 2004</ref> Daeron sent the [[Kingsguard]] to arrest him, but Daemon escaped with the aid of Ser [[Quentyn Ball]], the master-at-arms of the [[Red Keep]].

Daemon mustered a sizeable army against Daeron and was joined by his half-brother [[Aegor Rivers|Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers]], a fellow Great Bastard. [[Brynden Rivers|Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers]], another Great Bastard, remained loyal to the king. On the [[small council]], Bloodraven advocated a hard line against the rebels, winning out over Prince [[Baelor Targaryen (son of Daeron II)|Baelor Breakspear]]'s desire to pardon. Daemon began to mint his own coinage.

Heavy fighting erupted over the next year, with the [[Riverlands]] particularly afflicted. Ser Quentyn Ball, known as "Fireball", attacked the [[Westerlands]], killing Lord [[House Lefford|Lefford]] at the gates of [[Lannisport]] and then defeating Lord [[Damon Lannister (Lord)|Damon Lannister]] in turn. At the crossing of the [[Mander]], Ser Quentyn slew all of Lady [[House Penrose|Penrose]]'s sons except for the youngest, whom he spared as a favour to the lady. A key general, Fireball was slain on the eve of the [[Battle of the Redgrass Field]] by an archer.{{ref|TMK}}

Finally, at the [[Battle of the Redgrass Field]] in {{date|196}}, Bittersteel and Blackfyre led a strong force against a royalist army commanded by Prince [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar Targaryen]] and [[Lord Hayford]], the Hand of the King. The fighting was heavy, with Lord Hayford slain.

During the battle Blackfyre came face-to-face with Ser [[Gwayne Corbray]] of the [[Kingsguard]], wielder of the [[Valyrian steel]] blade [[Lady Forlorn]]. Their duel was said to have lasted nearly an hour before Blackfyre gained the upper hand. However, by this time a second royalist force was approaching from the south led by Prince [[Baelor Targaryen (son of Daeron II)|Baelor]].

Perhaps even more critical was that Bloodraven and his archers, the [[Raven's Teeth]], captured and assumed a position atop the [[Weeping Ridge]], which overlooked the battlefield and allowed them to rain arrows down among Blackfyre and his commanders. Bloodraven himself slew his half-brother Daemon Blackfyre and Daemon's twin sons [[Aemon Blackfyre|Aemon]] and [[Aegon Blackfyre|Aegon]]. The rebels began to rout, but Bittersteel rallied them by leading a charge that decimated the Raven's Teeth, taking out Bloodraven's eye in the process. However, Prince Baelor's Dornish spearmen gained the battlefield and crushed the rebel army against Maekar's shield wall.{{ref|TSS}}

It is unknown how many men took part in the final battle, but it is known that more than ten thousand died in the engagement, earning it the name [[Redgrass Field]]. With Daemon dead and his forces defeated, the rebellion was finished.

==Aftermath==
Singers would later immortalize the Battle of Redgrass Field with the song "[[The Hammer and Anvil]]", referring to Baelor and Maekar's strategy.

Years after the war, [[Eustace Osgrey]], a Blackfyre supporter, lamented that some houses supported both sides, that [[Manfred Lothston]] had proven treacherous to Daemon's cause, that storms had delayed the arrival of Lord [[House Bracken|Bracken]] with [[Myr]]ish crossbowmen, and that [[Quickfinger]] had been caught with stolen [[dragon egg]]s. The timing of those events is unknown, but they probably occurred before or during the Redgrass Field.{{ref|TSS}}

Bittersteel was able to recover the sword [[Blackfyre]] from the battlefield and escape to the [[Free Cities]], where Daemon's remaining sons had already fled. In exile, Daemon's descendants continued their struggle for the [[Iron Throne]]. Daemon's third son, [[Daemon II Blackfyre|Daemon II]], was captured in the [[Second Blackfyre Rebellion]]. The last Blackfyre of the male line, [[Maelys Blackfyre|Maelys the Monstrous]], was slain during the [[War of the Ninepenny Kings]] by Ser [[Barristan Selmy]], presumably ending the Blackfyre threat to the throne.

Since Rodrik is away, [[Theon Greyjoy]] is able to [[Capture of Winterfell|capture lightly-defended Winterfell]] by stealth. Theon then allows the Dreadfort men to pass Winterfell's moat and inner gate. Unbeknownst to Theon and Ramsay, hiding in the [[crypts of Winterfell]] are [[Bran Stark|Bran]] and [[Rickon Stark]], [[Meera Reed|Meera]] and [[Jojen Reed]], [[Hodor]], and [[Osha]]. The direwolves [[Summer]] and [[Shaggydog]], who are outside of Winterfell, smell the blood and burnt flesh from the battle and ensuing sack, and they hear the Boltons attack the defenseless people of Winterfell and burn its buildings. The next morning the direwolves find only wild dogs, dead bodies, and dying horses amidst the burning winter town.

When Bran and his companions leave Winterfell's crypt that morning, they find that one side of the First Keep has fallen away and its interior is burnt. Winterfell's previously broken tower remains standing, however. After being joined by Summer and Shaggydog, they reconnoiter Winterfell. Its granite walls still stand, though somewhat blackened by fire, but the interior is heavily damaged. The Great Hall's roof has collapsed, fires are visible in its cellar and a storehouse, and the glass gardens are destroyed. The stables have burned along with the horses, such as [[Dancer]] and [[Smiler]], while most of the hounds were slain in the kennels. Water from Winterfell's hot springs leaks from the Library Tower. The bridge between the Bell Tower and the rookery has collapsed, while Luwin's turret is destroyed. The sept built by Lord [[Eddard Stark]] for Lady [[Catelyn Tully]] is burned. The youths claim that Theon's ironmen had burnt Winterfell and put its men to the sword, but that Ramsay had led the surviving women and children to safety at the [[Dreadfort]].{{ref|ASOS|35}} At the [[Twins]] prior to the [[Red Wedding]], Lord [[Roose Bolton]] tells Robb that Ramsay has captured Theon and indicates Ramsay is torturing his captive.{{ref|ASOS|49}}

Varamyr, known as ''Lump'' at the time, used one of his dogs [[Loptail]], [[Sniff]] or [[Growler]] to kill his younger brother [[Bump]]. When Varamyr's father came upon Bump's body, the dogs were sniffing around it. Not knowing which one had done the act, he put all three to death. However, before Loptail's death, Varamyr slipped inside his skin and felt Loptail's death. His reaction, a scream, informed Varamyr's parents that he was a [[warg]].

Varamyr's father dragged him through the woods until he came to [[Haggon]], an elderly warg who informed Varamyr that he belonged with his own kind. Haggon taught him how to skinchange properly and the rules of the ability. He also instructed him on the strengths and weaknesses of the different animals and rudimentary survival skills. Haggon often traded with the [[Night's Watch]], and it was on one of those trips where Varamyr began to dream of living south of the [[Wall]]. He named himself Varamyr when he was ten years old.

When Haggon lay dying, Varamyr, resentful, stole his wolf, [[Greyskin]], who Haggon had intended as his second life. At that point Varamyr was calling himself Varamyr Threeskins and then Fourskins after taking Greyskin. Over the years, Varamyr died eight more times while wearing the skins of other creatures. However, his power grew and he was known to ride into battle on the back of a 13-foot tall female [[snow bear]]. He had a hall of moss, mud and hew logs, which had been Haggon's before he died. A dozen villages paid him homage. When he wanted a woman from the villages, he would send his shadowcat to get them. They came, some crying, some not, but all resentful. Eventually [[Mance Rayder]] sought an alliance with Varamyr. Varamyr agreed and was a part of Mance's host beneath the [[Wall]].{{Ref|aDwD|Prologue}}

The people of Skagos tended to cross the Bay of Seals to trade and raid on the mainland until King [[Brandon IX Stark]] broke their power, destroying their ships and forbidding them the sea. It is not known at what time Skagos ultimately became subject to the supremacy of [[Winterfell]], but they rose in rebellion against [[House Stark]] during the rule of King [[Daeron II Targaryen]]. The rebellion lasted for years and claimed the lives of thousands, among them Lord [[Barthogan Stark]], before being put down.

The trebuchets tower 40 feet high above the tents of the Yunkai and are the Yunkish siege camp’s chief landmarks. They are arrayed on three sides of the city, all but the river side, and are surrounded by piles of broken stone an casks of pitch resin just waiting for a torch. They are named:

* Harridan - largest of the trebuchets
* Harpy's Daughter
* Wicked Sister
* Ghost of Astapor
* Mazdhan's Fist

==Recent Events==
===A Dance with Dragons===
The Yunkai ships bring lumber and hides up from the south, enough to raise six huge trebuchets. As Daenerys's foes gather all about her she can hear the hammers ringing through the warm, dry air. She knows the Yunkai are building tall trebuchets outside of the walls of Meereen.

After being purchased in the auction block outside of Meereen the enslaved [[Tyrion Lannister]] looks upon trebuchets as his way to his new master. One of the soldiers walking along beside Tyrion’s cart proudly tells him the name of each trebuchet. According to the solider just the sight of them drove [[Daenerys Targaryen]] to her knees and there she will stay sucking [[Hizdahr]]’s noble cock, else the Yunkai will smash her walls to rubble.

After Daenerys's disappearance, while the Queen’s Hand Ser [[Barristan Selmy]] is meeting with the [[Green Grace]], [[Skahaz mo Kandaq]] bursts in to tell them that the six trebuchets have begun flinging not rocks, but corpses into Meereen, the [[Second Siege of Meereen]] has begun.

===The Winds of Winter===
In the camp of the [[Second Sons]] three hundred yards from where [[Tyrion Lannister]] stands rises the Wicked Sister, her long arm swinging up with a clutch of corpses. The fly naked and swollen, like pale dead birds tumbling boneless through the air. [[Viserion]] catches one burning body just as it began to fall, crunching it between his jaws.

During the meeting in [[Ben Plumm]]'s tent Ben informs his men that they have been commanded to defend the Wicked Sister by the [[Girl General]] as although Ser [[Barristan]] is making for the Harridan she is afraid he will turn toward Wicked Sister next.

By this point the trebuchet the Ghost of Astapor is already down. The [[Mother's Men]] broke the [[Long Lances]] like a rotten stick and dragged the trebuchet over with chains. According to Ben [[Melessa]] figures Selmy means to bring down all the trebuchets. Ser Jorah said replies that that is what he would have done in Ser Barristan's place except he would have done it sooner.
