Euron is a wildly unpredictable man, known for his delight in playing vicious mind games and waging psychological warfare on anyone around him. He is hated by his brothers for this reason. He is a skilled warrior and manipulator and is cunning, shrewd and ruthless.

At the outset of [[Greyjoy's Rebellion]], Euron concocted a plan to sail into [[Lannisport]] and burn the [[House Lannister|Lannister]] fleet at anchor. The [[Iron Fleet]], commanded by Euron's brother [[Victarion Greyjoy]], followed the plan and successfully destroyed the [[westerlands]]' naval force.{{Ref|ACOK|24}}

When Queen [[Naerys Targaryen]] recovered her health, Prince [[Daeron II Targaryen|Daeron]] and [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Viserys II)|Aemon the Dragonknight]] forced Aegon to send Barba and child from the capital, and Aegor was instead raised at [[Stone Hedge]].{{ref|TWOIAF| The Nine Mistresses of Aegon IV, the Unworthy}} He was angry his whole life, but reserved particular loathing for [[Brynden Rivers|Bloodraven]], whose mother, [[Melissa Blackwood]], had replaced his own as their father's favourite mistress. Aegor also loathed Bloodraven even further when [[Shiera Seastar]], the half-sister of both Bloodraven and himself, chose Bloodraven over him. Their other half-brother, [[Daemon I Blackfyre|Daemon Blackfyre]], agreed to wed his daughter [[Calla Blackfyre|Calla]] to Aegor. In the [[First Blackfyre Rebellion]] in {{date|196}}, Aegor sided with Daemon against King Daeron II. During the [[Battle of the Redgrass Field]], Aegor commanded the right of Daemon's host.{{Ref|tMK}} Upon Daemon's death, Aegor rallied his troops and charged Bloodraven's archers, the [[Raven's Teeth]], taking out his half-brother's eye in the process. Managing to recover [[Blackfyre]], the Targaryen family sword, Bittersteel fled Westeros at the end of the rebellion to the Free City of [[Tyrosh]] with Daemon's remaining sons.{{Ref|tSS}}

Aegor served a year with the [[Second Sons]] before leaving to create the [[Golden Company]], a famous mercenary organization, to stop the loss of support for the [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]] as other exile lords began to join other mercenary companies. Despite the notorious unreliability of sellswords, the Golden Company is reputed to have never broken a contract, and reference to their founder can be seen in their words: "Beneath the gold, the bitter steel."{{ref|ADWD|5|78}}

Shortly after its creation, the Golden Company became one of the most famous and disciplined sellsword companies in the Free Cities. They quickly established their reputation by sacking [[Qohor]] when the city refused to honor its contract.{{Ref|aWoIaF| Aegor Rivers}}

The Golden Company would also be heavily involved in the [[Blackfyre Rebellions]]. For unknown reasons, Bittersteel refused to support [[Daemon II Blackfyre]] during the [[Second Blackfyre Rebellion]] in {{date|211}}. He supported [[Haegon I Blackfyre]] in the [[Third Blackfyre Rebellion]] in {{date|219}}, however, but it ended with Haegon slain and Aegor taken to the [[Red Keep]] as a captive. Aegor accepted King [[Aerys I Targaryen]]'s offer of being sent to the [[Wall]], but the ship taking him north was intercepted by friends and Aegor returned to [[Essos]]. Aegor then crowned [[Daemon III Blackfyre]] in exile.{{ref|TWOIAF| Aerys I}}

According to legend, Garth Greenhand was the High King who led the First Men across the [[Arm of Dorne]]. Other tales claim he predated the arrival of the First Men, making not only the first human in Westeros but also the only human, and that he interacted with the [[children of the forest]] and [[giants]]. In some tales he is a god, and in a few of these, the oldest ones, he demands blood sacrifice from his worshippers to ensure a bountiful harvest. Some tales claim he had green hands, green hair or green skin overall, or antlers like a stag.

It is also said Garth first taught men to farm, giving them the gift of seed and showing them how to plant and sow, how to raise crops and reap the harvest. Some tales indicate he tried to do the same with giants and children of the forest, but the giants pelted him with boulders and the children laughed, stating the woods proved them with all their needs. Where he walked, farms and villages and orchards sprouted. He carried a canvas bag, heavy with seed, which he scattered as he went along. Befitting a god, the bag filled with seeds for all of the world's trees, grains, fruits and flowers, and its content was endless.

Garth Greenhand not only brought fertility to the land but also to women, making barren ones fruitful with a touch, even crones who no longer got their moon blood. Maidens ripened in his presence, mothers brought forth twins or even triplets when he blessed them and young girls flowered at his smile. Lords and common men alike offered up their virgins daughters to him where he went so their crops may ripen and trees grow heavy with fruit. Any maiden he deflowered delivered strong sons or fair daughters.

In some myths he's a contemporary of [[Bran the Builder]] or [[Durran Godsgrief]], in others he's ancestor of them all.

To the maesters, howver, he was no more than a warchief or petty king who led the first wave of First Men across the [[Arm of Dorne]].{{ref|TWOIAF| The Reach}}

According to legend, Garth Greenhand was the High King who led the First Men across the [[Arm of Dorne]]. Other tales claim he predated the arrival of the First Men, making not only the first human in Westeros but also the only human, and that he interacted with the [[children of the forest]] and [[giants]]. In some tales he is a god, and in a few of these, the oldest ones, he demands blood sacrifice from his worshippers to ensure a bountiful harvest. Some tales claim he had green hands, green hair or green skin overall, or antlers like a stag.

It is also said Garth first taught men to farm, giving them the gift of seed and showing them how to plant and sow, how to raise crops and reap the harvest. Some tales indicate he tried to do the same with giants and children of the forest, but the giants pelted him with boulders and the children laughed, stating the woods proved them with all their needs. Where he walked, farms and villages and orchards sprouted. He carried a canvas bag, heavy with seed, which he scattered as he went along. Befitting a god, the bag filled with seeds for all of the world's trees, grains, fruits and flowers, and its content was endless.

Garth Greenhand not only brought fertility to the land but also to women, making barren ones fruitful with a touch, even crones who no longer got their moon blood. Maidens ripened in his presence, mothers brought forth twins or even triplets when he blessed them and young girls flowered at his smile. Lords and common men alike offered up their virgins daughters to him where he went so their crops may ripen and trees grow heavy with fruit. Any maiden he deflowered delivered strong sons or fair daughters.

In some myths he's a contemporary of [[Bran the Builder]] or [[Durran Godsgrief]], in others he's ancestor of them all.

To the maesters, howver, he was no more than a warchief or petty king who led the first wave of First Men across the [[Arm of Dorne]].{{ref|TWOIAF| The Reach}}

He has little sense of right or wrong, which often leads him to trouble, especially when he loses his temper. When things go wrong, he always blames the problems on others. Despite being willful he is reckless, vicious, cruel and not very intelligent, all of which combine to make him prone to irrational and bad judgements.

Joffrey has the [[House Lannister|Lannister]] look and is tall for a boy his age, with blond curly hair. Known to be handsome, he has bright green eyes, pouty lips and an evil sneer. Joffrey grew up as a spoiled and indulgent child with a cruel streak within him. His father, King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]], is deeply disappointed with his son and feels little affection for Joffrey. It is also implied that Joffrey craves Robert's respect and approval, and many of his acts are done in an effort to live up to his father's standards.

Once after learning a kitchen cat was pregnant, Joffrey killed the animal and cut open its belly to see the kittens inside. He showed one of the unborn kittens to his father. Robert was so shocked and angry he hit the boy so hard it knocked out two of his baby teeth. After [[Bran Stark]] is critically injured after falling from a tower, Joffrey's uncle, [[Tyrion Lannister]], slaps Joffrey for speaking rudely of the boy's condition. Tyrion is later blamed when an assassin with a [[Valyrian steel|Valyrian dagger]] fails in an attempt to murder the comatose Bran, which furthers the growing enmity between Houses [[House Stark|Stark]] and [[House Lannister|Lannister]].

In his youth, Aerys II while not being the most intelligent, nor the most diligent of Princes he was described as a youth as having an undeniable charm, he was generous, handsome and resolute, although somewhat quick to anger. He was also vain, proud, and changeable, traits that made him easy prey for lickspittles and flatterers. As he grew older, Aerys became increasingly jealous, suspicious and cruel, prone to furious outbursts.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

He began to see every unexplained event or act of minor defiance as evidence of fearful conspiracies against him, and devised sadistic punishments for those he imagined to be his enemies. Aerys's reign began in {{Date|262}} with great promise. Over the peaceful first dozen years, the realm recovered from the tragic events at Summerhall and the War of the Ninepenny Kings, growing strong and prosperous. However, this would not remain.

Aerys brought sweeping changes, replacing many prominent officials with younger faces. He loved music, dancing and masked balls, and was exceedingly fond of young beautiful women, filling the court with fair maidens from across the kingdoms. After complaining about the stink of [[King's Landing]] in {{date|265}}, Aerys wanted to build a new city of white Marble on the south bank of the Blackwater. In {{Date|267}}, after a dispute with the [[Iron Bank of Braavos]], Aerys claimed he would build a war fleet and bring the [[Titan of Braavos]] to its knees. It was Tywin who settled the dispute with the [[Iron Bank of Braavos]] in {{date|267}}, as Tywin was shrewd enough not to make an enemy of the Iron Bank. He secretly paid the Bank back the loans owed to them by the [[Iron Throne]] with the gold of [[Casterly Rock]]. Tywin also appeased the High Lords by repelling all the laws, rights and protections that were granted to the smallfolk by King [[Aegon V Targaryen]].{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

Tywin won the support of the wealthy merchants by reducing tariffs on shipping to [[Oldtown]], [[Lannisport]] and [[King's Landing]], which increased trade. He sternly punished any baker caught mixing sawdust with bread, built new roads and repaired old ones, held splendid tournaments about the realm to the delight of knights and commons both. Despite these accomplishments, Tywin was little loved for he was also humorless, unforgiving, unbending, proud and insensitive. Traits that earned him many rivals, even his bannermen while greatly respecting him and loyally following him to war, bore him little love.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

The relationship between Aerys and Tywin was always complicated. When he was still a prince, Aerys had developed a crush on [[Joanna Lannister]], who was to marry her cousin Tywin. Aerys was present at the wedding in {{date|263}} and drank too much during the feast, leading to him joking that it was a great pity that the lord's right to the first night had been abolished and to taking certain liberties during the [[bedding]]. Aerys' own marriage, to his younger sister [[Rhaella Targaryen|Rhaella]], was less happy than Tywin's. Aerys was known to keep many mistresses, and whilst Rhaella turned a blind eye to her husbands infidelities, she objected heavily against "turning my ladies into whores". In {{Date|263}}, Lady Joanna Lannister was dismissed by Rhaella, shortly after having married Lord Tywin. Whilst no official reason was given for Joanna's abrupt dismissal, she was not the first of Rhaella's ladies to be dismissed in this fashion, nor was she the last.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

Aerys' many relationships were not the only string on his marriage. Rhaella's difficulties with childbirth played their part as well. In {{Date|263}} and {{Date|264}}, Rhaella had a miscarriage. In {{Date|267}}, whilst Aerys was away in the [[Westerlands]], Rhaella gave birth to the stillborn Princess [[Shaena Targaryen|Shaena]]. Prince [[Daeron Targaryen (son of Aerys II)|Daeron]], born in {{Date|279}}, survived for only half a year. After Daeron, a second stillbirth followed in {{Date|270}}, and a miscarriage in {{Date|271}}. In {{Date|272}}, Prince [[Aegon Targaryen (son of Aerys II)|Aegon]] was born two months premature. While Aerys was compassionate at first, comforting Rhaella in her grief, he turned suspicious in time. By {{Date|270}}, he had decided that Rhaella had been unfaithful to him, and that none of the stillbirths, miscarriages and dead princes had been his, as the gods would not want a bastard to sit the Iron Throne. He soon confined Rhaella to Maegor's Holdfast, and ordered that two septa's would sleep in her bed from that moment forth, to ensure she would remain faithful.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

Meanwhile, Aerys' relationship with his Hand was breaking down as well, the pairs friendship fraying. Where previously Aerys had headed Tywin's counsel, he now often disagreed with his Hand and did the opposite of what Tywin suggested. When [[Myr]] and [[Tyrosh]] became involved in a trade war against [[Volantis]], Lord Tywin suggested that Westeros remained neutral. King Aerys, in response, provided gold and arms to the Volantenese. When [[House Bracken]] and [[House Blackwood]] had a border dispute, Lord Tywin wanted to act in favor for House Blackwood, leading to Aerys siding with House Bracken. Over Tywin's objections, Aerys doubled the port fees for [[Oldtown]] and [[King's Landing]] and tripled them at [[Lannisport]] and other ports in Westeros. Trade suffered and a delegation of merchants arrived before the Iron Throne to protest. Aerys lied to them and blamed the matter on his Hand of the King stating...

Aerys restored the port fees to the previous levels, which won him much popularity and acclaim for himself, whilst the King's lies and actions left Tywin with nothing but scorn. Aerys objected to many of Tywin's appointments and filled the offices with men of his own choosing. When Tywin suggested his own brother, Ser [[Tygett Lannister]], as master-at-arms for the [[Red Keep]], Aerys appointed Ser [[Willem Darry]] instead.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

By now, Aerys had become aware of the tales being told in his Kingdoms; that it was Lord Tywin who truly ruled the Seven Kingdoms and that Aerys was but a hollow figurehead. These statements greatly angered the King. When Lord Tywin's captain of guard, Ser [[Ilyn Payne]], had been overheard to repeat this statement, Aerys had the man's tongue torn out with hot pincers.{{Ref|ASOS|11}}{{Ref|aFfC|27}} The angered King became determined to disprove the tales, and to humble Tywin, his "overmighty servant", putting him back into his place.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

In {{Date|272}}, to celebrate his tenth year on the [[Iron Throne]], Aerys held his Anniversary Tourney. Lady [[Joanna Lannister]] returned to [[King's Landing]] for this event, bringing with her her six-year old twins, [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] and [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]]. Drunkenly, Aerys asked Joanna if giving suck had ruined her breasts. Whilst the question was a great amusement for Lord Tywin's rivals, it humiliated Lady Joanna. Lord Tywin attempted to resign the next morning, but Aerys refused to accept. And thus, Tywin Lannister remained Hand of the King.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

Courtiers at the court who wished to win the kings favor and gain advancement soon learned the best way to gain the Kings eye was to mock and make japes about Lord Tywin. King Aerys continued to undermine and slight his Hand, which amused many Lords who were rivals of Lord Tywin or who simply disliked the humorless man. Tywin Lannister suffered all these slights in silence, never showing any public display of weakness. When Joanna Lannister died in childbirth in {{Date|273}}, the King had been heard to remark that Joanna had died, and Tywin had begotten his dwarf son instead from the gods, "to teach him some humility at last". These reports would reach [[Casterly Rock]], where Lord Tywin was in mourning. From that moment on, all the old affection between the old childhood friends was gone. Yet still, Lord Tywin continued to serve the realm as Hand of the King, whilst King Aerys grew increasingly violent, suspicious and erratic.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

The Kings madness abated slightly with the birth of another son, who he named [[Jaehaerys Targaryen (son of Aerys II)|Jaehaerys]], in {{date|274}}. In fact, Jaehaerys' birth which almost restored the King to his old self. This changed when Jaehaerys died later that same year. In a black rage, Aerys had the boys wet nurse beheaded, convinced it had been her fault. He soon had a change of heart, and declared that his mistress was to blame, having poisoned the young babe. Aerys had her and her entire family tortured and eventually executed. Under torture, all confessed to murdering Prince Jaehaerys, though their accounts on Jaehaerys' death greatly differed from one another.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

After this deed, however, Aerys changed his mind yet again. He fasted for a fortnight, and made a walk of repentance across the city, to the [[Great Sept of Baelor|Great Sept]] of Baelor. There, he prayed with the [[High Septon]]. When he returned, he announced that he would remain true to his wife and marital vows from that moment forth. From that day on in {{Date|275}}, King Aerys II Targaryen lost interest in all other women.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

In {{Date|276}}, Rhaella gave birth to a son named [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]]. While the boy was healthy enough, Aerys was paranoid about the boys safety. [[Kingsguard]] knights were ordered to stand over the babe, day and night. No one, not even Queen Rhaella, was allowed to be alone with Viserys. Gifts that came from all over the realm for the new Prince were piled up in the yard and burned on Aerys' orders, as the King feared they might be cursed or ensorcelled. When Rhaella's milk dried up, Aerys made his own food taster suckle on the nipples of the wet nurse, to ensure there was no poison on them.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

Later that year, Lord Tywin Lannister staged a [[tourney for King Aerys II|tourney at Lannisport]] in the honor of Viserys' birth. It has been suggested by history that this tourney was arranged as a gesture for reconciliation.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}} At this tourney, Lord Tywin proposed a marriage between his daughter [[Cersei Lannister|Cersei]] and Prince Rhaegar to King Aerys. However, Aerys's fear of Tywin's power and ambition led him to reject the offer rudely, saying that Tywin was a mere servant of the crown, and no servant's daughter was fit to marry a prince of royal blood. The tourney ended without a final feast and Aerys departed in a chilly atmosphere. Tywin would not forget the insult.{{Ref|aFfC|24}}

Lord [[Denys Darklyn]] of [[Duskendale]] had desired to win a charter for Duskendale, which would give him more autonomy from the crown. He made his proposal to the crown in {{Date|277}}, but Lord Tywin Lannister, however, refused the proposal, but Lord Denys would not give up so easily. Having noticed the detoriated relationship between Aerys and Tywin, Lord Denys decided to withhold his payments to the crown, and instead invited the King to Duskendale to hear his petition for a new charter. While Aerys had planned to refuse the invitation, the King changed his mind when Lord Tywin suggested Aerys refuse the invitation. Eager to demonstrate his ability to handle the situation without the help of his Hand, Aerys decided to settle the issue personally. Taking a small force that included only one [[Kingsguard]] [[knight]], Ser [[Gwayne Gaunt]], Aerys personally marched to Duskendale to end the defiance of Lord Denys. The invitation proved to be a trap, however, and Aerys walked right into it. His escort killed trying to defend their king, Aerys was taken prisoner.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}

Outrage was the response to this news from [[Duskendale]]. As [[Hand of the King]], it fell to Lord Tywin Lannister to resolve the crisis. He massed an army and laid siege to the town in what became known as the [[Defiance of Duskendale]]. The situation remained in a stalemate for six months, with Lord Denys threatening to execute the king at the first sign that Tywin intended to storm the town. In the end, it was Ser [[Barristan Selmy]] of the Kingsguard who staged a daring infiltration and managed to rescue the king.

Lord Denys immediately surrendered and begged for mercy, but in his fury Aerys immediately had him immediately beheaded. His rage still not sated, the king next ordered [[House Darklyn]] utterly destroyed, along with [[House Hollard]], which had sided with them. Every last member of both families was tortured at excruciating length before being burned alive, with the sole exception of the child [[Dontos Hollard]], who was spared only at Ser Barristan's pleading. Ser Barristan later developed doubts about his actions at Duskendale, wondering whether Aerys's death in Lord Denys' dungeon and Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar's]] ascent to the throne would not have spared the [[Seven Kingdoms]] much grief.{{Ref|aDwD|55}}{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

===Following the Defiance===
The Defiance of Duskendale plunged Aerys deeper into his descent into madness. Deeply shaken by his imprisonment, he refused to leave the [[Red Keep]] for the next four years. His jealous and suspicious nature deepened into paranoia and eventually outright delusions, seeing evidence of treachery everywhere.

Aerys's relations with Lord [[Tywin Lannister|Tywin]] deteriorated even more rapidly. The King felt his Hand had wanted him to perish in the dungeons of Duskendale. Aerys also no longer trusted his wife or his heir. In his paranoia, Aerys believed that Tywin and Rhaegar had conspired to have him killed by storming Duskendale, so Rhaegar would ascend the Throne and marry Tywin's daughter.

To prevent such conspiracies between Rhaegar and Tywin, Aerys summoned his old childhood friend, Lord [[Steffon Baratheon]], to court, making him a member of the [[small council]]. Aerys publically announced Steffon would go to [[Volantis]], to find a bride for Rhaegar of ''"proud Valyrian blood"''. The fact that Aerys entrusted this task to Steffon instead of Tywin or Rhaegar caused many to whisper that Aerys intended to make Steffon his new Hand of the King, upon the successful completion of this mission, and that Aerys planned to have Lord Tywin arrested and executed for high treason. Many lords took delight in the prospect.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

Fate had other plans. Lord Steffon's mission turned out to be a failure and on the return voyage his ship was caught in a storm and sank, just off the coast of [[Storm's End]], in sight of his two eldest children, [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]] and [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]]. Aerys got the notion in his head that Tywin had somehow assassinated Lord Steffon. He even stated to [[Pycelle]] that he couldn't dismiss Tywin as Hand, as Tywin would have him killed then as well. In the final years of his reign where Tywin was still Hand, Aerys never met with Lord Tywin unless all seven of the Kingsguard knights were present.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Aerys II}}{{Ref|ACOK|Prologue}}

His paranoia and hysterical madness ever deepening, Aerys heard word of the talents of a certain eunuch named [[Varys]]. The eunuch was brought to court, and appointed as Aerys' [[master of whisperers]] on the small council. The king reasoned that only a foreigner with no competing loyalties in [[Westeros]] could be trusted to alert him of potential threats. The Spider, as Varys became known to the smallfolk, used the crowns gold to form a vast web of informers. Varys was always seen crouching at the king's side whispering in his ear.{{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

Aerys also resolved the matter of Rhaegar's marriage. In early {{Date|279}}, Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]] was betrothed to Princess [[Elia Martell]]. In early {{Date|280}}, the two were wed in a lavish ceremony at the [[Great Sept of Baelor]]. Fearing to be assasinated, Aerys refused to attend. Neither did he allow Prince [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]] to attend. Rhaegar and his new bride decided to take up residence on [[Dragonstone]], instead of remaining in [[King's Landing]], which led some to whisper that Rhaegar planned on disposing his father and seizing the Throne. Others claimed that Aerys II meant to disinherit Rhaegar and name his younger son, Prince [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]], the new heir. The birth of Princess [[Rhaenys Targaryen (daughter of Rhaegar)|Rhaenys]], Aerys first grandchild, did not unite the estranged father and son. When Rhaegar presented the girl to court, Queen Rhaella embraced her grandchild warmly, but Aerys refused to touch her, stating that ''"she smelled Dornish"''. {{ref|twoiaf| Aerys II}}

Aerys grew brutal, capricious and increasingly fascinated with fire, especially the highly flammable substance known as [[wildfire]] which was said to be a cousin to dragonflame. By {{Date|280}}, Aerys had taken to using wildfire for executing alleged traitors, rather then hangings or beheadings. The pyromancers became a fixture at the King's court and Wisdom [[Rossart]], who carried out the executions, was eventually named to the [[small council]]. All the executions by fire aroused the King and, while he and his wife had slept in separate chambers for some years and avoided each other by day as well, Aerys would always claim his marriage rights after such an execution by fire, brutally abusing his wife in bed.{{Ref|aFfC|16}}

===Year of the False Spring===
In {{date|281}} Aerys announced he would appoint Tywin's eldest (and [[Tyrion Lannister|only able-bodied]]) son [[Jaime Lannister|Jaime]] as the youngest knight ever to join the [[Kingsguard]]. Tywin Lannsiter and later his son Jaime came to believe that Aerys had intended this not as an honor but a slight to [[House Lannister]], meant to deprive Tywin of his heir and allow Aerys to hold Jaime hostage for his father's loyalty. Furious, Tywin found a thin pretext to resign his position and returned to [[Casterly Rock]] though publicly he thanked the king for the honor bestowed upon his House. Aerys this time accepted Tywins resignation and appointed as his replacement Lord [[Owen Merryweather]], an amiable but not especially competent old man whose main qualifications as [[Hand of the King|Hand]] were his willingness to throw lavish feasts and offer the king constant flattery. The young knight Jaime would offically join the kingsguard in a ceremony at a later date.

With Lord Tywin now gone from court, the new focus of Aerys mistrust was his own son and heir Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Rhaegar]], who had become wary of his father's behavior.{{Ref|aDwD|24}} At court their was growing tension between the factions loyal to the King and those loyal to his heir Prince Rhaegar. Aerys may have been mad and cruel to those he deemed his enemies, but he was lavish with wealth and titles to those who enjoyed his trust.

Those loyal to the King were [[Qarlton Chelsted]] the [[Master of Coin]], [[Lucerys Velaryon]] the [[Master of Ships]], [[Symond Staunton]] the [[Master of Laws]], [[Varys]] the [[Master of Whisperers]] and Wisdom [[Rossart]]. All enjoyed the King's trust and at court held great power and they had learned how to twist the kings madness to their own benefit, they had good reason to oppose Aerys removal from the [[Iron Throne]].

Rhaegars supporters were young Lord [[Jon Connington]], Ser [[Myles Mooton]], Ser [[Richard Lonmouth]], the Dornish who accompanied him at court including [[Elia Martell|Elia's]] uncle [[Lewyn Martell|Prince Lewyn]] of the [[Kingsguard]], but Rhaegars dearest friend was Ser [[Arthur Dayne]], the Sword of the Morning.

It fell to Grandmaester [[Pycelle]] and the [[Hand of the King]], Lord [[Owen Merryweather]] the unenviable task of trying to keep the peace between the factions, Pycelle even dispatched a letter to the [[Citadel]] writing that tensions and division at court strongly resembled those before the [[Dance of the Dragons]], Pycelle was fearful of a civil war between those loyal to the King and those who supported Rhaegar would break out unless some accord could be reached that would satisfy both factions.{{ref|twoiaf| The Year of the False Spring}}

Lord [[Walter Whent|Whents]] announced a [[Tourney at Harrenhal|tourney]] would be held at [[Harrenhal]] in {{date|280}} to rival any previous tournament, it was to be held a year later in {{date|281}}. According to [[Varys]] the tournament was secretly arranged and financed by [[Rhaegar Targaryen|Prince Rhaegar]] as a pretext so Rhaegar could met up with the Great Lords of the realm to discuss arranging a [[Great Council]] and the removal of his father. The tournament was shortly announced by Lord Whent after his brother [[Oswell Whent]] of the [[Kingsguard]] visited his older brother. {{Ref|aDwD|67}} {{ref|twoiaf| The Year of the False Spring}}

Aerys at first was counseled by Lord Chelsted to forbid it, while Lord Staunton went as far to suggest the king should outlaw all tournaments. Lord Merryweather intervened by pointing out such events were extremely popular with the highborn and lowborn and that attempting to ban or outlaw tourneys would make King Aerys unpopular and strengthen Rhaegar. Aerys decided to attend the tournament, the first time he left the [[Red Keep]] since the [[Defiance of Duskendale]], he also decided that the tournament would be the perfect place to initiate [[Jaime Lannister]] to the [[Kingsguard]].

Aerys also hoped his presence at the tourney would win back the love of his people. If that was his intention it backfired horrifically, Aerys since the defiance had left his appearance go to rot, his fear of blades mean't he would not permit even his hair to be cut or his nails groomed. His hair and beard was unwashed, matted and tangled, his nails were yellow and grew nine inches in length. His fear and paranoia of poison made him thin and gaunt. The Lords and knights were appalled at what their monarch had become. Nor was his behavior that of a sane man, going from mirth to melancholy at a snap of the fingers. His bouts of hysterical laughter, long silences, sudden rages and constant weeping made all present weary.

In contrast, Prince Rhaegar looked every inch a leader and warrior. Tall, clean, handsome, well groomed and at the tourney he was unstoppable in the lists, winning bout after bout. The young Jaime Lannister said his vows before the King with the realm looking on, a cheer went up as the young handsome knight joined the [[Kingsguard]], a cheer that Aerys thought was for him.

A [[mystery knight]], the [[Knight of the Laughing Tree]], competed in the tournament. Certain the knight had concealed his identity because he was an enemy of the crown, Aerys ordered Rhaegar to discover his identity, but no evidence was found. Rhaegar went on to win the tournament and shocked all present by crowning [[Lyanna Stark]], rather than [[Elia Martell|Princess Elia]], his [[Queen of Love and Beauty]]. {{ref|twoiaf| The Year of the False Spring}}

Some time afterward, Prince Rhaegar disappeared with Lyanna, apparently having kidnapped her. Her eldest brother [[Brandon Stark|Brandon]] rode to King's Landing with several friends when word of his sister's disappearance reached him and upon arriving at the Red Keep, Brandon roared for Rhaegar to "come out and die." As it turned out, Rhaegar was not present – but Aerys was. The king had Brandon and his companions arrested on charges of conspiring against the life of the crown prince, demanding that their fathers present themselves at court to answer for their sons' crimes. When they did so, Aerys had them all executed without trial. Aerys chose fire as his champion for a [[trial by combat]]. Lord [[Rickard Stark]] was burned alive by wildfire as Brandon watched, strapped into a torture device that caused him to strangle himself in his struggles to save his father. His paranoia still unsatisfied, the king ordered Lord [[Jon Arryn]] to send him the heads of his two wards at the [[Eyrie]], [[Eddard Stark]] and Lyanna's fiance [[Robert Baratheon]], both of whom he believed to be guilty of participating in the "conspiracy" on account of their ties with [[House Stark]]. Arryn refused, and the king's brutal acts triggered a chain of events that would become known as the [[War of the Usurper]] to Targaryen loyalists and [[Robert's Rebellion]] to those who fought on the rebel side. [[House Arryn]], House Stark, [[House Baratheon]] and [[House Tully]] all rebelled against the [[Iron Throne]], uniting behind the claim of Robert Baratheon, who was descended from royal blood through his grandmother [[Rhaelle Targaryen]], the king's aunt.

Aerys's [[Hand of the King|Hand]] at the start of the rebellion was still [[Owen Merryweather]], but he was quickly replaced for his failure to act to contain the unrest in its early stages. Aerys next turned to Lord [[Jon Connington]], a close friend of Rhaegar's, who promised him to deliver Robert's head. However, Connington lost to rebel forces at [[Stoney Sept]] in the [[Battle of the Bells]] and was exiled by Aerys because of it. As his new Hand, Aerys chose Lord [[Qarlton Chelsted]].{{Ref|aDwD|Epilogue}} By this point, the king was becoming fearful of a rebel victory, and hatched the [[wildfire plot]], a plan to gain a final revenge against his enemies in the event that they took the capital. He ordered pyromancers to create a massive reserve of wildfire and secrete it around [[King's Landing]], plotting to burn down the entire city and kill all its half a million inhabitants rather than allow Robert to have it intact. Upon discovering the plot, Lord Chelsted confronted Aerys and, when he realized the king could not be dissuaded, resigned his position in disgust, flinging his chain of office at the king's feet. Aerys had him burned alive. The [[Alchemists' Guild]] had enjoyed royal favor ever since the Defiance of Duskendale owing to the king's obsession with wildfire, and Aerys appointed the head of the guild, [[Rossart]], his final Hand.

After the [[Battle of the Trident]], in which Prince Rhaegar was slain and the royal army defeated, a rebel victory was all but certain. Aerys sent Queen Rhaella (then newly pregnant with Princess Daenerys) and Prince Viserys to [[Dragonstone]] to escape the coming [[Sack of King's Landing]]. However, he kept Princess Elia and her young children [[Rhaenys Targaryen (daughter of Rhaegar)|Rhaenys]] and [[Aegon Targaryen|Aegon]] with him at the Red Keep, believing they were necessary as hostages to ensure the loyalty of [[House Martell]] and [[Dorne]]. This decision would ultimately lead to their brutal deaths at the hands of Ser [[Amory Lorch]] and Ser [[Gregor Clegane]].

Hours before the vanguard of [[Eddard Stark]]'s rebel host would arrive, 12,000 [[The Westerlands|Westerland]] troops under Tywin Lannister reached King's Landing and pledged their loyalty to King Aerys. [[Varys]] advised the king not to admit them to the city, but [[Maester|Grand Maester]] [[Pycelle]] argued that the Lannisters should be trusted. Aerys made the fateful choice to listen to Pycelle, and opened the city gates. The Lannister forces promptly began [[Sack of King's Landing|sacking the city]] in the name of King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]].

Realizing this was the end, Aerys summoned Lord Rossart and Ser [[Jaime Lannister]], the last remaining Kingsguard knight. Aerys had retained Jaime throughout the war to ensure Tywin's loyalty, though up until that point [[House Lannister]] had been neutral in the rebellion. Jaime would later remark upon the irony of the Mad King's belief that he could not be harmed if he kept Jaime close. Aerys commanded Jaime to kill his father, then gave Rossart the long-awaited order to ignite the wildfire caches and burn the city to the ground.{{ref|ASOS|37}}

Jaime later suggested that much like his mad great-uncle [[Aerion Targaryen|Aerion the Monstrous]] before him, Aerys held the delusional belief that he would not die in the inferno, but rather would be transformed by the flames into a [[dragon]], giving him the power to crush his enemies. However, before the plot could be carried out, Jaime slew Lord Rossart and then King Aerys, preventing the orders from reaching anyone else and thus saving the entire population of King's Landing, while earning himself the epithet [[Kingslayer]]. They camped just outside of Ashford under an elm tree and watched a shooting star fall from the evening sky. To Dunk, the moment symbolized the humble pleasures of the hedge knight lifestyle. In the morning, Dunk sold Arlan's equipment and purchased armor to his size. Needing a coat of arms, Dunk commissioned [[Tanselle]], an attractive [[Dorne|Dornish]] puppeteer, to paint a shooting star above an elm tree over a sunset field on his shield.

Dunk claimed to the tourney organizers that Arlan knighted him before his death. His thoughts of seeking another knight to squire for after Ser Arlan's death strongly suggest that this was not the case.<ref> Author [[George R. R. Martin]] has confirmed that Dunk's story of his knighting is a lie.</ref> No one remembered Arlan, and Dunk eventually sought out [[Baelor Targaryen (son of Daeron II)|Baelor Breakspear]], who had tilted against Arlan on one notable occasion. Baelor allowed Dunk to enter the tourney. That evening, [[Aerion Targaryen]] attacked the puppeteer and Dunk rushed to her aide. After breaking several of Aerion's teeth, Dunk was subdued by Aerion's guards, but Egg, revealing his identity as [[Aegon V Targaryen|Aegon Targaryen]], protected him from further harm.

Vengeful, yet wary of Dunk's size and strength, Aerion demanded a [[trial of seven]], a trial by combat involving seven combatants on each side. Egg helped Dunk find allies, which ultimately included Baelor himself. Dunk learned that the people were with him for being a knight who remembered his vows to protect the helpless. During the combat, Dunk faced off against Aerion, and his inexperience with lance and sword nearly got him killed. Using his superior strength and the brawling skills he learned in Flea Bottom, Dunk bested Aerion and forced him to yield. The victory rang hollow, however, as two of the men who had taken Dunk's side had been killed, and shortly after the trial Baelor died of a head wound taken from his own brother. Dunk was beset by guilt for his part in the deaths of such good men, especially the Crown Prince. Egg's father, [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar]], asked Dunk to take Egg as his squire officially, to serve as a positive influence on him. Dunk agreed, but preferred to do this while remaining a hedge knight. Thus Egg would be taught the humility that his elder brother Aerion had never learned.

Dunk and Egg eventually travelled from Oldtown to [[Standfast]], still on the [[Reach]], and entered the service of Ser [[Eustace Osgrey]], a poor and broken landed knight who also employed an old acquaintance of Dunk, Ser [[Bennis|Bennis the Brown]]. Dunk and Bennis discover that peasants of Lady [[Rohanne Webber]] of [[Coldmoat]] have dammed the local stream. Bennis provoked Rohanne by cutting one of her peasants, and Dunk eventually went to Coldmoat to try to reason with her. Though sexual tension charged their meeting, Rohanne refused Dunk and told him about Eustace's support of [[Daemon Blackfyre]] during the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].

Shocked by the revelation, Dunk attempted to leave Eustace's service, but a fire in the nearby woods caused Dunk to suspect that Rohanne had already started her campaign against Eustace. After Bennis fled, leaving only Eustace's feeble peasant levies, Dunk knew that war was a lost cause. He disbanded Eustace's levies, but promised to face Rohanne with him. Meeting with Rohanne's forces, Dunk offered to settle the matter with a trial by combat. Rohanne agreed, and sent her overbearing steward Ser [[Lucas Inchfield|Lucas Longinch]] to fight Dunk in the stream. Again, Dunk's wrestling ability compensated for his lack of swordsmanship. He killed Lucas, but received major wounds and almost drowned in the stream.

After recuperating, Dunk discovered that Eustace and Rohanne had settled their differences and decided to marry. Feeling rejected, Dunk took one last kiss from Rohanne and cut off a length of her signature braid as a keepsake. Afterwards, Dunk and Egg took their leave.

The story begins with Dunk and [[Aegon V Targaryen|Egg]] leaving [[Stoney Sept]]. They are moving north to try and take up service with Lord [[Beron Stark]] who has sent a call for men to help fend off [[House Greyjoy|Greyjoy]] raids on the northern coast. On the way they encounter a [[Faith of the Seven#septon|septon]] who was beheaded for preaching treason; Dunk remembers that Lord [[Bloodraven]] has spies everywhere. On route Egg and Dunk encounter a lord's train led by Lord [[Gormon Peake]] of [[Starpike]], whose arms are three black castles on a field of orange. Also in the party are a lord named [[Alyn Cockshaw]] and a well dressed and richly garbed man who claims to be a hedge knight named Ser [[Daemon II Blackfyre|John the Fiddler]]. Dunk is challenged and insulted by Peake and Cockshaw but the Fiddler treats him courteously. Before they ride off, Ser John invites Dunk to attend the wedding of Lord [[Ambrose Butterwell]]. There is to be a joust to celebrate the wedding of Butterwell to a [[House Frey|Frey of the Crossing]]; the victor's prize is to be a dragon egg.

Dunk takes a dislike to Gormon Peake; Ser [[Arlan of Pennytree|Arlan]], to whom Dunk was squired, claimed his previous squire, [[Roger of Pennytree]], was slain by Gormon in the [[Battle of the Redgrass Field]]. Egg tells Dunk that Gormon's arms of three castles on an orange field is because the [[House Peake|Peake]] family used to own three castles, but two were forfeited to the Crown when Peake sided with [[House Blackfyre]].

Dunk decides to go to the wedding. During the journey Dunk befriends three fellow hedge knights.
The wedding is set at [[Whitewalls]] and after noticing the guest list, Egg informs Dunk of his suspicions that this was a traitor's wedding and the majority of the nobles attending had fought for the [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]]. Dunk tells him to keep his suspicions quiet and keep his head down. During the bedding Dunk is drafted by John the Fiddler to carry the bride to the bedchamber. Dunk does so and later when he goes for a breath of air, John the Fiddler talks to him saying that he recognized Dunk on the road. Dunk appeared to him in a dream in which Duncan wore the all white armor of the [[Kingsguard]]. The Fiddler says his dreams always come true, as he dreamt his brothers dead once and also a dragon hatching from an egg at Whitewalls.

Dunk decides to enter the first match of the joust as a [[mystery knight]] known as the Gallows Knight (due to a new shield that once belonged to a knight of [[House Trant]] that Dunk had to buy as his old shield was damaged in his duel with [[Lucas Inchfield|Lucas Longinch]]) in case anyone heard of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall from [[Ashford]], but Dunk is defeated in his first tilt by Ser [[Uthor Underleaf]] known as the the Snail Knight due to his sigil. Underleaf's lance hits Duncan upon the helm, knocking him out and nearly killing him. Dunk recovers later and goes to give the Underleaf his armor and horse as forfeit. Since Dunk can't ransom it back he is in a glum mood. Dunk talks to Underleaf and Underleaf informs Dunk that someone bribed him to try and kill Dunk in the final tilt, Underleaf states that if they paid more he might have completed the task, but tells Dunk he has an enemy. Before the jousting continues word spreads through the castle that the dragon egg is missing and the blame is placed on Ser Glendon Ball, who is imprisoned by Peake.

Dunk notices that Egg is missing and sets out to find his squire. Whilst searching he is almost killed by Alyn Cockshaw who tells Dunk he bribed Underleaf to kill Dunk because he was jealous of John the Fiddler's obsession with Dunk and that dream Dunk manages to defeat him by throwing him down a well, though he takes a wound in return from Cockshaw's knife. Maynard Plumm comes to Duncan's aid and tells him where to find his squire.

Dunk finds Egg in the [[Faith of the Seven#sept|sept]] with the cowering Lord Butterwell, who on discovering Egg's true identity is terrified for his life. Egg falsely told Ambrose that he and Dunk were spies sent to investigate the tournament and that his father, Prince [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar]], is on the way with an army. Lord Ambrose's step-son, [[Tommard Heddle|Black Tom Heddle]], shows up and tries to harm Egg but is slain by Dunk. Dunk tells Egg to flee with Ambrose. To buy time for Egg's escape Dunk confronts Daemon II Blackfyre, accusing Gormon Peake of falsely charging Ball with the theft of the dragon egg.

Dunk meets Bloodraven inside his pavilion outside of which the head of Gormon Peake along with Black Tom Heddle are displayed on spears. Bloodraven, in gratitude to Dunk, gives him the gold to ransom his armor back. Dunk then asks Bloodraven what became of the dragon egg. Bloodraven tells Dunk it was taken by an agent of his who crawled up the privy shaft of the castle to take the egg from its guarded chamber, and is now safe. Dunk remarks that a man wouldn't have fit in those shafts. Bloodraven replies a child would have. Or a dwarf, Dunk thinks as he remembers the performing dwarfs at the wedding.

After Egg took the [[Iron Throne]] as King [[Aegon V Targaryen]], he asked Dunk to join the Kingsguard and he eventually became the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Aegon named his first son and heir Prince [[Duncan Targaryen|Duncan]], who was called Duncan the Small in contrast to his namesake. In his youth, Aegon first served at court in King's Landing as a page. {{Ref|TSS}} He owned a [[dragon egg]], which was colored with green and white swirls, placed in his cradle with him when he was a babe.{{ref|tmk}} He loathed his brother, the cruel and sadistic [[Aerion Targaryen|Aerion]], who threw Aegon's pet cat down a well. Aerion once visited Aegon in his bedroom during the dead of night, put a knife to Aegon's privates, and joked about removing his genitals so he would become a girl whom Aerion could marry. Aegon himself was betrothed to his sister [[Daella Targaryen (daughter of Maekar I)|Daella]], though he did not wish to marry her. Aegon dreamed of becoming a knight of the [[Kingsguard]], who are sworn not to wed.{{Ref|TSS}}

Aegon was supposed to squire for his eldest brother, [[Daeron Targaryen (son of Maekar I)|Daeron]], in the [[tourney at Ashford Meadow]], but Daeron had no interest in jousting and drank himself into a stupor at an inn. Ser Duncan the Tall visited the inn and Aegon was impressed by the humble hedge knight and followed him.

Daeron left a feeble-witted daughter named [[Vaella Targaryen (daughter of Daeron)|Vaella]] and Aerion a minor [[Maegor Targaryen (son of Aerion)|son]], so the [[Great Council]] was called to choose the king. Aegon seemed the logical choice but many Lords considered him ''"half a peasant"'' due to his youth among the [[smallfolk]], the Council approached Aegon's brother [[Aemon]], a [[maester]], was offered the crown, but refused, stating it should be given to Aegon. {{ref|twoiaf| Maekar I}}

==Reign==
Aegon was crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms when he was thirty-three years old. According to Aemon, Aegon, despite being a man grown with sons of his own, was still half a boy and had an innocence to him, a sweetness that was well loved. Aegons first act as King was the arrest of [[Brynden Rivers]] the former [[Hand of the King]], for the murder of [[Aenys Blackfyre]], Brynden had offered him safe conduct to Westeros for the Great Council but had executed him when he arrived in the capital.{{Ref|TWOIAF| Maekar I}} Though all were glad another Blackfyre pretender was dead, Aegon had to punish Lord Rivers least it look like the word of the [[Iron Throne]] is worthless, he was sentenced to death though King Aegon offered him a choice to join the [[Night's Watch]] to which Lord Rivers accepted.

Aemon decided to join the [[Night's Watch]] too, to prevent any plots from developing whereby he would be used against his brother. As an honor guard many of bloodravens personal guard known as the [[Raven's Teeth]] decided to follow their commander and take the black also. Aegon emptied the dungeons and sent the prisoners to join the Night's Watch, Before departing for the [[Wall]], Aemon gave his brother, one final counsel:

During Aegon's reign he appointed his old friend [[Duncan|Ser Duncan the Tall]] as [[Lord Commander of the Kingsguard]]. Aegon's reign was a troubled and challenging one, It began during a harsh winter that had already lasted three years and showed no signs of abating. There was massive starvation and suffering in the North. Aegon always concerned for the well being of the poor and weak sent massive shipments of food and grain North, some felt he did too much in this regard though. The Winter after six years finally ended in {{date|236}}, Aegons reign was tested by those lords whose affairs they felt he meddled in during his youth.

The spring saw the threat of [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]] return the [[Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion]] happened just as the winter had ended. [[Daemon III Blackfyre|Daemon Blackfyre the third]] attempted to seize the [[Iron Throne]] with the [[Golden Company]] but the rebellion rallied few to it's side. Aegon and his sons personally rode to meet and repel the invaders, Duncan the Tall personally slew Daemon in single combat ending the Rebellion, [[Aegor Rivers|Bittersteel]] managed to escape though and fled with the remnants of the Golden Company across the Narrow Sea. The [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]] sadly were not the only opposition Aegon faced during his rule. {{ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

Despite Aemon removing himself as a possible pawn in plots to overthrow Aegon. Aegon spent much of his reign in armor trying to quell one conflict after another,
thrice the [[Iron Throne]] had to intervene in the [[Westerlands]] due to the inferior and inept leadership of Lord [[Tytos Lannister]]. {{ref|twoiaf| House Lannister under the Dragons}} However the troubles were mainly caused because Aegon tried to improve the lives of the smallfolk. Having seen first hand the hardship the smallfolk suffer during his time as a Squire to Duncan, Aegon V did much to improve the quality of life for his lowborn subjects. He enacted numerous reforms and granted rights and protections to the commons that they had never known before, these new rights made him beloved of the commons but each of these measures also provoked fierce opposition from the High Lords whose powers over their peasants was diminished and curtailed by these new reforms, the most outspoken of the high Lords against King Aegon once denounced Aegon as a...

It was well known that the resistance he constantly faced taxed King Aegons patience - especially as the compromises a king must make to rule well often left his greatest hopes receding further and further into the future. As one defiance followed another, Aegon was forced to bow to the recalcitrant lords more often than he wished. Aegon was heard to say, that if only he had [[Dragons]], the Lords would be less hostile to him and could more easily enact all of the desired reforms and rights he wished to grant the smallfolk, If he had Dragons he could remake the realm anew, with peace and prosperity for all.

Aegon faced renewed troubles in his reign caused because of his sons.{{ref|AWOIAF}} [[Barristan Selmy]] stated Aegon V married for love and all three of his sons were said to want to do the same in defiance of their father's wishes. Aegon the Fifth of his name growing up among the smallfolk had also developed a distaste for the Targaryen practice of incestuous marriage, Aegon was convinced that such incestuous unions did more harm than good and he wished to end this tradition once and for all. He had made arranged marriages for all three of his sons when they were children, to the daughters of some of the greatest and most powerful Houses in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. {{Ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

Aegon and his Queen arranged the betrothals of four of their children in {{date|237}}. The first was between their eldest son and heir [[Duncan Targaryen|Prince Duncan]] to the daughter of [[Lyonel Baratheon]] of [[Storm's End]]. The second was [[Jaehaerys II Targaryen|Prince Jaehaerys]] to [[Celia Tully]], the daughter of the Lord of [[Riverrun]] and the youngest son, [[Daeron Targaryen (son of Aegon V)|Prince Daeron]] to Lady [[Olenna Redwyne]] of the [[Arbor]] and finally their daughter the [[Shaera Targaryen|Princess Shaera]] was to wed [[Luthor Tyrell]] the heir to [[Highgarden]]. If these marriages had taken place they would have strengthened King Aegons rule and would have won him much support for his reforms. Prince Duncan was the first to defy his father in {{date|239}} when he became enamored and eventually fell in love with a mysterious woman known as [[Jenny of Oldstones]] who he secretly wed. Though King Aegon V grew up among the smallfolk and was a good friend to them, he could not sanction the wedding of the heir to the [[Iron Throne]] to a peasant girl, he did all they could to undo the marriage. Prince Duncan shared his fathers willfulness and would not relent though. King Aegon, the [[small council]], Grandmaester and the [[High Septon]] all forced Prince Duncan to choose between the girl or the [[Iron Throne]]. The Prince choose Jenny and abdicated as Prince of Dragonstone, thus making his younger brother [[Jaehaerys II|Prince Jaehaerys]] the new heir. {{Ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

This did not restore peace between the [[Iron Throne]] and [[House Baratheon]], whose daughter Prince Duncan had spurned to wed a peasant girl. Prior to this, Lord [[Lyonel Baratheon]] had been a leal supporter of King Aegon V, thus the reason King Aegon was pleased to have arranged the betrothal of his heir to Lord Lyonels daughter. The famed warrior and Lord of [[Storm's End]] was not a man easily appeased when his pride and honor were wounded. A short bloody rebellion followed which was ended in trial by combat between Ser [[Duncan|Duncan the Tall]] of the [[Kingsguard]] and Lord Lyonel, Ser Duncan defeated Lord Lyonel, making him yield. King Aegon pardoned him and to make peace arranged a new betrothal of his daughter [[Rhaelle Targaryen|Princess Rhaelle]] to Lord Lyonel's heir. King Aegon sent Rhaelle to [[Storm's End]] as Lord Lyonels cupbearer and companion to his lady wife to make sure this wedding took place. {{Ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

The second betrothal that was broken was by the new heir [[Jaehaerys II Targaryen|Prince Jaehaerys]], while his father had developed a distaste for the Targaryen practice of marriage through incest, Prince Jaehaerys was of a more traditional mind and from a young age desired his sister [[Shaera Targaryen|Shaera]] whose desire for him was similar. King Aegon and his Queen when they discovered this, did everything to separate the two siblings, which only served to inflame their passions. When Prince Duncan defied his fathers wishes and married Jenny, Jaehaerys did not fail to note that their father eventually relented. In {{date|240}} Prince Jaehaerys and Princess Shaera who both eluded their guardians secretly wed and consummated the marriage. Aegon despaired over this, but felt he had no choice now and was forced to relent to his children's wishes, while at the same time dealing with the anger and wounded pride of [[House Tully]] and [[House Tyrell]].{{Ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}} Jaehaerys and Shaera eventually had their first child, a son who they named [[Aerys II Targaryen|Aerys]].

[[Daeron Targaryen (son of Aegon V)|Prince Daeron]] followed the examples of his brothers and refused to marry to his betrothed, [[Olenna Redwyne]].
He did so when he was eighteen years old, in {{Date|246}}. But while his brothers had broken their betrothals for another woman, this was not the case with Daeron.

While Daeron would not live for much longer, he would remain unwed. He preferred the companionship of Ser [[Jeremy Norridge]], a young knight whom he had befriended when they were squires together at [[Highgarden]].{{Ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

Meanwhile in [[Essos]] during {{date|258}}, the [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]] joined together with other power seekers to form the [[Band of Nine]]. Since this group also posed a threat to the [[Free Cities]], King Aegon felt that they would be dealt with by the forces of [[Free Cities]] saving the [[Iron Throne]] from getting involved, nonetheless preparations were made in case the group became a serious threat.

The turmoil in his reign made Aegon obsessed with the idea of restoring dragons to Westeros. He got [[Septons]] to pray over the last Dragon eggs and [[Maesters]] to consult ancient scrolls and lore, though friends and counselors sough to dissuade him, King Aegon grew convinced that only with dragons could he have the power to enact the changes he wished and force the stubborn lords to accept his decrees that granted freedoms, rights and protections to the smallfolk. {{ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}}

This led to the [[tragedy of Summerhall]], where Aegon perished while trying to hatch [[dragon egg]]s. His son, Prince [[Duncan Targaryen|Duncan the Small]], his friend, Lord Commander Duncan of the Kingsguard, and others of the royal court also perished in the fire.{{ref|twoiaf| Aegon V}} Aegon was succeeded by his second son, [[Jaehaerys II Targaryen|Jaehaerys II]].

The '''trial of seven''' is a form of [[trial by combat]] an offended party can demand during trial. It is linked to the [[Faith of the Seven]] and [[Andal]] tradition.

The Andals believed that if seven champions fought on each side, the gods thus honored would be more likely to see justice done. If a man cannot find six others to stand with him, then he is obviously guilty.{{ref|thk}} There has not been a trial by seven in almost a hundred years; the last known use of this procedure was during the [[Ashford Tourney]] in year {{Date|209}}. Queen '''Naerys Targaryen''' was the sister-wife to King [[Aegon IV Targaryen|Aegon IV]], known as the Unworthy, the sister of Prince [[Aemon Targaryen (son of Viserys II)|Aemon "the Dragonknight"]] and the mother of King [[Daeron II Targaryen]].

Naerys had the [[House Targaryen|Targaryen]] looks, a very fine and delicate beauty, almost unworldy. She was very slender and small, with big purple eyes and fine, pale, porcelain skin, near translucent.<ref name=SSM>Naerys Targaryen. Though she had the silver-gold hair of the Targaryens, she often bound it up beneath a hair net or concealed it beneath a cowl. She bore a certain resemblance to [[Daenerys Targaryen]].

==History==
Naerys was the only daughter of King [[Viserys II Targaryen]]. According to semi-canon sources, she almost died in the cradle and was sickly for most of her life, she found most physical activity to be very taxing. She ate but little and was painfully thin, almost emaciated.<ref name=SSM></ref>

Naerys loved music and poetry, played the [[harp]] very well, enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She was devout in her faith, and often found solace in the pages of the [[Seven-Pointed Star]]. Once [[Daeron II Targaryen|Daeron]] was born she asked Aegon to release her from her vows so she could join the Faith but he refused her. She was unhappy in her marriage and it was said only her son Daeron or her brother Aemon could make her smile.<ref name=SSM></ref>

Aegon was equally unhappy with his marriage and Naerys was the only woman he took no pleasure in bedding, he did not love her as she was pious, gentle and frail, everything Aegon loathed. Aegon could have easily absolved the marriage by granting her request to join the [[Faith of the Seven]] and then Aegon could marry any other woman of his choosing. Why he never did this is cause of much speculation among the [[Maesters]]. The answer most likely was simple cruelty. According to [[Alford|Grandmaester Alford]] after the birth of [[Daeron II Targaryen|Prince Daeron]], he warned Aegon that a another pregnancy could kill Naerys. Naerys after giving him an heir begged him to allow her to join the [[Faith of the Seven]] as a Septa and absolve the marriage. Aegon refused though and insisted she still perform her ''""wifely duties"''. {{ref|awoiaf| Aegon IV}}

Through out the years, Naerys would go through several difficult pregnancies, all of which she barely survived, during the reign of [[Baelor I Targaryen|Baelor the Blessed]] Naerys gave birth to two twins who died after the birth, the news caused king Baelor to fast for a moon's turn. {{ref|twoiaf| Baelor I}} In {{date|172}} after a difficult labour she gave birth to a daughter named [[Daenerys Targaryen (daughter of Aegon IV)|Daenerys]].{{ref|twoiaf| Daeron II}}

After her husband [[Aegon IV Targaryen|Aegon]] became King, rumours started that their son Daeron had not been fathered by Aegon, but by Aemon, their brother. The truth of this claim has never been proven or disproven, though the singers claim Naerys loved Aemon, and Aemon loved her.{{ref|awoiaf}} It is said that Aemon cried when Naerys and Aegon got married. Aemon joined the [[Kingsguard]] soon after the wedding, at the age of 17.{{ref|awoiaf}}
Naerys brother, Prince Aemon, championed her and defended her honor against the slanders of Ser [[Morgil Hastwyck|Morgil]],{{ref|agot|15}} when he accused her of treason.{{Ref|awoiaf}}

The writings of [[Kaeth|Maester Kaeth]] in the ''[[Lives of Four Kings]]'', claim it was in fact [[Aegon IV Targaryen|Aegon]] who secretly started the rumors of Naerys adultery and used the knight, [[Morgil Hastwyck|Ser Morgil]] to spread this tale, at the time King Aegon denied this. These accusations coincidentally started when Aegon and his heir [[Daeron II Targaryen|Prince Daeron]] were quarreling in {{date|174}}. Daeron opposed Aegons plan for an unprovoked war on [[Dorne]].{{ref|twoiaf| Aegon IV}}

No matter what the truth was of the matter, Aemon eventually died defending Aegon from two men who attempted to kill him. Naerys did not survive long after Aemons death, as she died in childbirh a year later. The child did not survive either.

King Aegon did little to honor either of his siblings memories and after their deaths he attempted to further sully and disparage their memories despite the fact

It should be noted that until now, only rumours about Daeron's parentage are known. For as far as is known, there has been no one to question the paternaty of Daenerys, Naerys' daughter. Daeron and Daenerys were her only children who survived labour.
