The '''timeline of major events''' attempts to lay out the most important points in the history of [[Westeros]] and [[Essos]], based on dates and information given in the novels and supporting material. See also: a thorough [[Years after Aegon's Landing|listing of events]] after Aegon's Landing.

According to tradition, the known history of Westeros extends back over 12,500 years. However, the oldest historic recounts in [[Westeros]] were only written after the [[Andal invasion|Andals arrival]] to the continent, as the [[First Men]] only used runes for carving on stone. Everything written about the [[Age of Heroes]], the [[Dawn Age]], and [[the Long Night]] originates from stories written down by [[Faith of the Seven|septons]] thousands of years later. The accuracy of the legends and myths that recount much of this history is openly questioned by the [[maesters]] of the Citadel, amongst others.

Gregor Clegane is well known for his size, cruelty, and prowess in battle. Gregor is extremely tall (close to eight feet). He has "massive shoulders and arms thick as the trunk of small trees." {{Ref|AGOT|30}} Gregor weighs over thirty stone (420 lbs), nearly all of it muscle, making him near inhumanly strong. Gregor's strength allows him to wield a six-foot, two-handed greatsword with just one hand, giving him enormous reach while still wielding a shield. In battle he wears the heaviest, thickest plate armor in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. He chases [[Roose Bolton]]'s army as they march to [[the Twins]], taking several highborn captives including [[Wylis Manderly]] in the [[Battle of the Ruby Ford]]. [[Tywin Lannister]] then orders Ser Gregor to [[Retaking of Harrenhal|retake Harrenhal]], which is being held by [[Vargo Hoat|Vargo "The Goat" Hoat]], and put the castle to the sword. A cook who had his foot cut off by Hoat opens a postern gate for Clegane. Inside, [[The Mountain's men|Gregor's men]] slaughter the inhabitants and the defenders (bar the cook who opened the gate, the castle smith [[Ben Blackthumb]] and a girl named [[Pia]] who the Mountain and his men rape repeatedly). The Mountain gives special treatment to Vargo Hoat, forcing him to eat his own cooked limbs ("Roast Goat") and serving him to the captive Northmen as well.

Tywin planned on lying to Oberyn and claim that [[Amory Lorch]] (who was dead at the time) was to blame for all three death's. While Lorch was guilty of the murder of [[Rhaenys Targaryen(daughter of Rhaegar)|Princess Rhaenys]] he was not responsible for the death's of [[Elia Martell]] and [[Aegon Targaryen|Prince Aegon]]. Tywin's plan to keep Clegane away was ruined when [[Tyrion Lannister]] was put on trial for the murder of [[Joffrey Baratheon|King Joffrey]] and Tyrion's accuser, [[Cersei Lannister]], announced that her champion will be Ser Gregor in the event of a Trail by combat. Cersei named Clegane in order to thwart Tyrion from using [[Bronn]] or anyone else to defend him in a trial by combat given Ser Gregor's monstrous reputation. {{Ref|ASOS|66}} This move, however, leads [[Elia Martell|Princess Elia's]] brother, Prince [[Oberyn Martell]], on seeing a chance to fulfill his family's long-held desire for vengeance against her murderer, to agree to champion Tyrion in opposition.

Clegane fights in his usual style - with heavy armor, his thick oaken shield and his greatsword in one hand - but Oberyn outfights him with speed and a poisoned spear. Though most of Oberyn's attacks were deflected by Gregor's plate, Oberyn cleverly attacked the joints in the armor, and eventually wounded Clegane after the Mountain tired from chasing Oberyn. After being poisoned and crippled by numerous wounds, Clegane manages to grab hold of Oberyn and crush him to death. Before killing Oberyn, however, Clegane roars that he killed Elia and Aegon for all to hear.{{Ref|ASOS|70}}

Despite Gregor's victory, Oberyn achieved his revenge for his murdered sister as he had coated his spear with a deadly poison which resulted in a long, agonizing death by mortification for Ser Gregor.

Tywin feared [[Dorne]] might join [[Stannis Baratheon]], which could prolong the [[War of the Five Kings|war]] for years. Tywin planned on having Gregor executed to appease [[House Martell]], but needed it to be seen that the [[Ilyn Payne|King's Justice]] was the one who carried out the deed, not poison. An enormous skull said to be Gregor's is sent to [[Sunspear]] as recompense for the deaths of [[Elia Martell|Elia]], [[Aegon Targaryen|Aegon]], and [[Oberyn Martell|Oberyn]]. Gregor Clegane is well known for his size, cruelty, and prowess in battle. Gregor is extremely tall (close to eight feet). He has "massive shoulders and arms thick as the trunk of small trees." {{Ref|AGOT|30}} Gregor weighs over thirty stone (420 lbs), nearly all of it muscle, making him near inhumanly strong. Gregor's strength allows him to wield a six-foot, two-handed greatsword with just one hand, giving him enormous reach while still wielding a shield. In battle he wears the heaviest, thickest plate armor in the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. He chases [[Roose Bolton]]'s army as they march to [[the Twins]], taking several highborn captives including [[Wylis Manderly]] in the [[Battle of the Ruby Ford]]. [[Tywin Lannister]] then orders Ser Gregor to [[Retaking of Harrenhal|retake Harrenhal]], which is being held by [[Vargo Hoat|Vargo "The Goat" Hoat]], and put the castle to the sword. A cook who had his foot cut off by Hoat opens a postern gate for Clegane. Inside, [[The Mountain's men|Gregor's men]] slaughter the inhabitants and the defenders (bar the cook who opened the gate, the castle smith [[Ben Blackthumb]] and a girl named [[Pia]] who the Mountain and his men rape repeatedly). The Mountain gives special treatment to Vargo Hoat, forcing him to eat his own cooked limbs ("Roast Goat") and serving him to the captive Northmen as well.

Tywin planned on lying to Oberyn and claim that [[Amory Lorch]] (who was dead at the time) was to blame for all three death's. While Lorch was guilty of the murder of [[Rhaenys Targaryen(daughter of Rhaegar)|Princess Rhaenys]] he was not responsible for the death's of [[Elia Martell]] and [[Aegon Targaryen|Prince Aegon]]. Tywin intended to keep Gregor far away from [[King's Landing]] during Oberyn's stay. {{Ref|aSoS|53}}

Tywin's plan to keep Clegane away however was ruined when [[Tyrion Lannister]] was put on trial for the murder of [[Joffrey Baratheon|King Joffrey]], Tyrion's accuser, [[Cersei Lannister]] announced that her champion will be Ser Gregor in the event of a Trail by combat. Cersei named Clegane in order to thwart Tyrion from using [[Bronn]] or anyone else to defend him in a trial by combat given Ser Gregor's monstrous reputation. {{Ref|ASOS|66}} This move however leads [[Elia Martell|Princess Elia's]] brother, Prince [[Oberyn Martell]], seeing a chance to fulfill his family's long-held desire for vengeance against her murderer, agree's to champion Tyrion in opposition.

Clegane fights in his usual style - with heavy armor, his thick oaken shield and his greatsword in one hand - but Oberyn outfights him with speed and a poisoned spear. Though most of Oberyn's attacks were deflected by Gregor's plate, Oberyn cleverly attacked the joints in the armor, and eventually wounded Clegane after the Mountain tired from chasing Oberyn. After being poisoned and crippled by numerous wounds, Clegane manages to grab hold of Oberyn and crush him to death. Before killing Oberyn, however, Clegane roars that he killed Elia and Aegon for all to hear.{{Ref|ASOS|70}}

Despite Gregor's victory, Oberyn achieved his revenge for his murdered sister as he had coated his spear with a deadly poison which resulted in a long, agonizing death by mortification for Ser Gregor.

[[Tywin Lannister]] faced huge political ramifications from the results of the trial especially Gregor's confession. Tywin feared [[Dorne]] might join [[Stannis Baratheon]], which could prolong the [[War of the Five Kings|war]] for years. Tywin planned on having Gregor executed to appease [[House Martell]], but needed it to be seen to be the [[Ilyn Payne|King's Justice]] who carried out the deed, not poison. Qyburn stated upon examining him that it was a wonder the man was still alive to which [[Cersei Lannister]] replied...

An enormous skull said to be Gregor's is sent to [[Sunspear]] as recompense for the deaths of [[Elia Martell|Elia]], [[Aegon Targaryen|Aegon]], and [[Oberyn Martell|Oberyn]]. The ostensible skull of Ser Gregor is brought to Sunspear by [[Balon Swann|Ser Balon Swann]] of the [[Kingsguard]], and is presented to [[Doran Martell|Prince Doran]], [[Arianne Martell]], and the eldest of the [[Oberyn Martell|Red Viper]]'s eight [[Sand Snakes|bastard daughters]]: ([[Obara Sand|Obara]], [[Tyene Sand|Tyene]] and [[Nymeria Sand]]).

Obara ponders if the head is really Gregor's. Doran notes that it is certainly large enough to be so and Tyene confirms that if the poison her [[Oberyn Martell|father]] used so much as broke the Mountains skin, then Clegane is dead.{{Ref|ADWD|38}}

Meanwhile, in [[King's Landing]], the death of [[Arys Oakheart]] in Dorne leaves a vacancy on the Kingsguard. He never speaks and it is claimed by Qyburn that he has taken a holy vow of silence until Cersei's innocence is proven and the realm purged of evil. He wears a helm bearing seven plumes in the colours of the [[Faith of the Seven|Faith]] and his cloak of office is clasped with icons in the shape of seven-pointed stars.

Despite this, Arryn still wished for Slynt to be dismissed but [[Robert Baratheon]] stated that...

The City Watch wear cloaks, usually made of heavy wool, dyed gold. When [[Bran Stark]] has visions through the heart tree of Winterfell, a scene seems to involve a girl looking like Arya. Two children are seen duelling with broken branches, using them as swords. The girl is older and taller than the boy. She defeats the boy, slashing him across the thigh. The boy loses his balance and falls into the pool. He starts splashing and shouting. The girl warns him to be quiet, or [[Nan|Old Nan]] will hear him and notify their father. She then kneels and pulls her younger brother from the pool. The scene shifts to another vision before Bran has a chance to see more of the two children.{{Ref|aDwD|34}} It is implied that the girl is Lyanna and the boy is her younger brother, [[Benjen Stark]].<ref name="Beyond the Wall"/>

Lyanna was at Winterfell when her father promised her hand to Robert Baratheon. That same night she confided to Eddard concerning her opinion of Robert: that the man will never keep to one bed. She had heard that Robert had an illegitimate daughter in the [[Vale of Arryn]], apparently [[Mya Stone]]. Eddard attempted to persuade her that what Robert did before the betrothal was insignificant and that Robert would change. She was not convinced.{{Ref|aGoT|35}}

Lyanna was present at the [[Tourney at Harrenhal]]. There she found [[Howland Reed]] being bullied by three young squires, none older than fifteen-years-old. She roared "That's my father's man you're kicking" and attacked them with a tourney sword. The bullies scattered and Lyanna "the she-wolf" took the injured man back to her "lair," probably a tent. She cleaned his wounds and bound them with linen. Then she introduced the guest to her brothers [[Brandon Stark]] ("the wild wolf"), [[Eddard Stark]] ("the quiet wolf"), and [[Benjen Stark]] ("the pup").

That evening, Lyanna persuaded Reed to attend the feast marking the start of the tournament. She insisted that he was highborn and had as much right to attend as anyone. The "wolf maid" was not easy to refuse. Benjen found a suitable garb for Reed. Within [[Harrenhal]], Reed ate and drank with the Starks. During the feast, Lyanna recognized the three bullying squires. At some time after the tournament, Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar with the help of [[Arthur Dayne]] and [[Oswell Whent]].<ref name="aSoIaF App">"Rhaegar Targaryen" entry in ''[[A World of Ice and Fire]]''</ref> The story (as told by [[Robert Baratheon]]) goes that Rhaegar carried her off and raped her.{{Ref|aGoT|66}} Barristan Selmy is convinced that "Prince Rhaegar loved his Lady Lyanna," though that love sent thousands to their respective deaths.{{Ref|aDwD|67}} According to [[Viserys Targaryen]], Rhaegar was simply not happy with his marriage. If Rhaegar was happy with Elia, he would not have needed Lyanna. He once blamed their sister [[Daenerys Targaryen]] for being born too late to marry Rhaegar. A happily married Rhaegar would need neither Elia nor Lyanna. Daenerys countered that, by the same logic, it was the fault of Viserys that he was not a girl, because then he would be the sister destined for Rhaegar. Her eldest brother [[Brandon Stark]] was on his way to [[Riverrun]] when the news of his sister's disappearance reached him, and instead he went straight to [[King's Landing]]. Entering the [[Red Keep]] with a few companions ([[Ethan Glover]], [[Jeffory Mallister]], [[Kyle Royce]], [[Elbert Arryn]]), he roared for Rhaegar "to come out and die." But Rhaegar wasn't there. [[Aerys II Targaryen|King Aerys]] had Brandon and his companions arrested, accusing them of plotting murder and charged them with treason. Aerys summoned their fathers to court, supposedly to answer the charge against their sons. When they presented themselves, Aerys decided to kill them all, fathers and sons together. Brandon and Lyanna's father, Lord [[Rickard Stark]], demanded a [[trial by combat]], and the king granted him the request. Lord Stark was allowed to armor himself for battle but was then suspended from the rafters over a blazing fire, Aerys choosing "fire" as his champion. He had Brandon watch as Rickard slowly roasted, the young son attached to a device which tightened a cord around his neck whenever he moved. Trying to reach for his longsword and rescue his father, Brandon strangled himself. They died with no real trial.This was a primary impetus for [[Robert's Rebellion]]. Aerys next demanded the heads of Robert and Eddard. They were both wards of Jon Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie having pledged to protect them. Rhaegar left Gerold with Arthur and Oswell to guard Lyanna. The decisive battle of the war came at [[Battle of the Trident|the Trident]], where Robert slew Rhaegar in single combat and the rebels defeated the royal army.{{Ref|aGoT|4}} According to the stories of [[Viserys Targaryen]], Rhaegar had fought and died for "the woman he loved."{{Ref|aGoT|3}} [[Daenerys Targaryen]] believes in that version of the story.{{Ref|aGoT|64}} One of the visions Daenerys sees in the [[House of the Undying]], seems to depict the last moments of Rhaegar. Following the Battle of the Trident, the remnants of Rhaegar's army retreated toward [[King's Landing]]. Robert was wounded and unable to pursue them, but he entrusted Eddard with the pursuit. Eddard expected to find the city gates closed, with Aerys II and several thousand Targaryen loyalists leading the defense. He reached the city just after the [[Sack of King's Landing]] by the forces of [[House Lannister]]. For most of the rebellion, the Lannisters had remained neutral, ignoring calls to arms by both the rebels and the loyalists. Then [[Tywin Lannister]] and 12,000 of his soldiers reached the capital. Aerys opened the gates to them, mistaking them for allied reinforcements. Instead they were there to sack the city and join the rebels.[[Pycelle]] had managed to convince Aerys II to open the gates. The King did so, unaware that Pycelle himself was only loyal to Tywin. Aerys ignored the warnings of [[Varys]] to not trust Lord Tywin.{{Ref|aGoT|12}}{{Ref|aSoS|37}}

Aerys II had one last plan: [[the Wildfire Plot]], a way to burn the capital, leaving for Robert only ashes, charred bones, and cooked meat. He commanded [[Rossart]], the [[Hand of the King]], to activate the plan, making certain to take the Lannister forces with him to his funeral pyre. Meanwhile, he gave [[Jaime Lannister]] orders to decapitate Tywin and bring the head to him. Jaime instead killed Rossart and then attacked Aerys himself, killing him. [[Elys Westerling]] and [[Roland Crakehall (Lord)|Roland Crakehall]] then entered the throne room, finding Jaime with the corpse. At about the same time, [[Gregor Clegane]] and Amory Lorch were scaling the walls of [[Red Keep|Maegor's Holdfast]] as Eddard Stark was leading his own forces through the city gates. He then rode to the [[Tower of Joy]] in the mountains of [[Dorne]] with his six companions ([[Martyn Cassel]], [[Theo Wull]], [[Ethan Glover]], [[Mark Ryswell]], [[Howland Reed]] and [[Willam Dustin]]), and found the three remaining loyalist members of the [[Kingsguard]] - Ser [[Arthur Dayne]], Ser [[Oswell Whent]], and Ser [[Gerold Hightower]] - guarding it. Only Ned and his bannerman [[Howland Reed]] survived the ensuing battle. Ned found Lyanna inside the tower in a "bed of blood", dying. When Eddard recalls the conflict in a dream, there is an additional detail. While the combatants clash, Lyanna screams. The dream then switches to a storm of blue rose petals, blowing across a blood-streaked sky. It is uncertain if these details are accurate memories.{{Ref|aGoT|39}}

Lyanna died in a room that smelled of "blood and roses". A fever had taken her strength. Her voice had been faint as a whisper. There was fear in her eyes, while she called for "Ned" to promise her something. When her brother gave his word, the fear left her. She smiled, and her fingers clutched his own in a tight grip. They were still holding each other as she "gave up her hold on life". Rose petals slipped from her palm, dead and black. Later, [[Howland Reed]] found Eddard still holding the corpse. Howland managed to separate the hands of the living man and the dying girl, though Eddard had no recollection of what happened after Lyanna died.{{Ref|aGoT|4}} Shortly before her death, Lyanna extracted a promise from Ned.{{Ref|aGoT|35}} Neither the content of the promise nor the cause of her death are currently known. **Negative points of this theory would be doubts concerning the skill and youth of Lyanna. The existence of swordfighting skills, doesn't confirm the existence of jousting skills. In her fight with the squires, there would be other factors on her side. There is no mention the squires were armed. There was likely an element of surprise at work, when they found themselves under attack. If they recognized their assailant as a noble girl, they may have consciously avoided hurting her. Afraid of risking the wrath of her House. None of these factors would be present on the jousting field. Even if she had actual training, this would be the first real test for her skills. As a novice in the sport, her victory would be far from guaranteed. Lyanna would have logically tried to sound like a man. But the helm would not be enough to produce a powerful, stentorian voice. <ref name="Forum2"/>

"Bolder than most" crannogmen. His hesitation to fight may have been only a temporary obstacle. Earlier the tale has him knowing "the magic of the crannogs" and spending an entire winter with the [[Green Men]]. His prayer may have been answered with supernatural assistance. That the crannogman could have been turned into a knight, "even if it was only for a day". Or that the Knight could be a Green Man, with "dark green skin and leaves instead of hair". The theory relies on Reed having beginner's luck, justice, or the supernatural on his side. If the Green Men, the [[children of the forest]], or the old gods intervened on this relatively minor occassion, one would expect them to also intervene in major events. While their lack of intervention is what makes the people of [[Westeros]] doubt their continued existence. The story might also undermine the loyalty of Reed to [[House Stark]]. By his thirteenth year, he had become an expert oarsman. At fifteen he sailed with [[Dagmer|Dagmer Cleftjaw]] to the [[Stepstones]] on a reaving, killing his first man and taking his first two salt wives there. Balon succeeded his father as Lord Reaper of Pyke when the latter died during a raiding journey. Aeron nearly drowned when his ship was sunk off the coast of [[Fair Isle]], when the [[ironborn]] fleet was [[Battle of Fair Isle|caught in a trap]] set by the [[Master of Ships]], Lord [[Stannis Baratheon]]. Aeron was initially believed to be lost at sea, but he washed ashore and was discovered by local fishermen, who led him to [[Lannisport]] in chains.

Ser Maynard was among the hedge knights encamped by the lake. He attended the wedding of Lord [[Ambrose Butterwell]] and his new wife, but refused to take part in the tourney. After Ser [[Duncan the Tall]] lost in the lists, Ser Maynard tried to persuade him to leave, but Ser Duncan refused. When Ser Duncan was cornered by Lord [[Alyn Cockshaw]], Ser Maynard watched until Lord Alyn had fallen into the well, then proceeded to help the injured Ser Duncan and informed him of the whereabouts of his missing squire. During the [[Second Blackfyre Rebellion]] his presence was missed.

He claimed that [[Bloodraven]] was well aware of the would-be rebellion and was proven right. It is strongly implied that he works with Bloodraven or may in fact be Bloodraven himself using his infamous sorcery. When Duncan mentions that they could all be bastard sons of Aegon the Unworthy if the stories of his lust were true, he quips "And who's to say we're not?"...hinting at his heritage as Bloodraven, a Great Bastard.

In the morning, Dunk sold Arlan's equipment and purchased armor to his size. Dunk claimed to the tourney organizers that Arlan knighted him before his death. Dunk and Bennis discover that peasants of Lady [[Rohanne Webber]] of [[Coldmoat]] have dammed the local stream. Bennis provoked Rohanne by cutting one of her peasants, and Dunk eventually went to Coldmoat to try to reason with her. Though sexual tension charged their meeting, Rohanne refused Dunk and told him about Eustace's support of [[Daemon Blackfyre]] during the [[Blackfyre Rebellion]].

Shocked by the revelation, Dunk attempted to leave Eustace's service, but a fire in the nearby woods caused Dunk to suspect that Rohanne had already started her campaign against Eustace. After Bennis fled, leaving only Eustace's feeble peasant levies, Dunk knew that war was a lost cause. He disbanded Eustace's levies, but promised to face Rohanne with him. Meeting with Rohanne's forces, Dunk offered to settle the matter with a trial by combat. They are moving north to try and take up service with Lord [[Beron Stark]] who has sent a call for men to help fend off [[House Greyjoy|Greyjoy]] raids on the northern coast. On the way they encounter a [[Faith of the Seven#septon|septon]] who was beheaded for preaching treason; Dunk remembers that Lord [[Bloodraven]] has spies everywhere. On route Egg and Dunk encounter a lord's train led by Lord [[Gormon Peake]] of [[Starpike]], whose arms are three black castles on a field of orange. Also in the party are a lord named [[Alyn Cockshaw]] and a well dressed and richly garbed man who claims to be a hedge knight named Ser [[Daemon II Blackfyre|John the Fiddler]]. Dunk is challenged and insulted by Peake and Cockshaw but the Fiddler treats him courteously. Before they ride off, Ser John invites Dunk to attend the wedding of Lord [[Ambrose Butterwell]]. There is to be a joust to celebrate the wedding of Butterwell to a [[House Frey|Frey of the Crossing]]; the victor's prize is to be a dragon egg.

Dunk takes a dislike to Gormon Peake; Ser [[Arlan of Pennytree|Arlan]], to whom Dunk was squired, claimed his previous squire, [[Roger of Pennytree]], was slain by Gormon in the [[Battle of the Redgrass Field]]. Egg tells Dunk that Gormon's arms of three castles on an orange field is because the [[House Peake|Peake]] family used to own three castles, but two were forfeited to the Crown when Peake sided with [[House Blackfyre]].

Dunk decides to go to the wedding. During the journey Dunk befriends three fellow hedge knights.
The wedding is set at [[Whitewalls]] and after noticing the guest list, Egg informs Dunk of his suspicions that this was a traitor's wedding and the majority of the nobles attending had fought for the [[House Blackfyre|Blackfyres]]. Dunk tells him to keep his suspicions quiet and keep his head down. During the bedding Dunk is drafted by John the Fiddler to carry the bride to the bedchamber. Dunk does so and later when he goes for a breath of air, John the Fiddler talks to him saying that he recognized Dunk on the road. Dunk appeared to him in a dream in which Duncan wore the all white armor of the [[Kingsguard]]. The Fiddler says his dreams always come true, as he dreamt his brothers dead once and also a dragon hatching from an egg at Whitewalls.

Dunk decides to enter the first match of the joust as a mystery knight known as the Gallows Knight (due to a new shield that once belonged to a knight of [[House Trant]] that Dunk had to buy as his old shield was damaged in his duel with [[Lucas Inchfield|Lucas Longinch]]) in case anyone heard of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall from [[Ashford]], but Dunk is defeated in his first tilt by Ser [[Uthor Underleaf]] known as the the Snail Knight due to his sigil. Underleaf's lance hits Duncan upon the helm, knocking him out and nearly killing him. Dunk recovers later and goes to give the Underleaf his armor and horse as forfeit. Since Dunk can't ransom it back he is in a glum mood. Dunk talks to Underleaf and Underleaf informs Dunk that someone bribed him to try and kill Dunk in the final tilt, Underleaf states that if they paid more he might have completed the task, but tells Dunk he has an enemy. Before the jousting continues word spreads through the castle that the dragon egg is missing and the blame is placed on Ser Glendon Ball, who is imprisoned by Peake.

Dunk notices that Egg is missing and sets out to find his squire. Whilst searching he is almost killed by Alyn Cockshaw who tells Dunk he bribed Underleaf to kill Dunk because he was jealous of John the Fiddler's obsession with Dunk and that dream Dunk manages to defeat him by throwing him down a well, though he takes a wound in return from Cockshaw's knife. Maynard Plumm comes to Duncan's aid and tells him where to find his squire.

Dunk finds Egg in the [[Faith of the Seven#sept|sept]] with the cowering Lord Butterwell, who on discovering Egg's true identity is terrified for his life. Egg falsely told Ambrose that he and Dunk were spies sent to investigate the tournament and that his father, Prince [[Maekar I Targaryen|Maekar]], is on the way with an army. Lord Ambrose's step-son, [[Tommard Heddle|Black Tom Heddle]], shows up and tries to harm Egg but is slain by Dunk. Dunk tells Egg to flee with Ambrose. To buy time for Egg's escape Dunk confronts Daemon II Blackfyre, accusing Gormon Peake of falsely charging Ball with the theft of the dragon egg.

Dunk meets Bloodraven inside his pavilion outside of which the head of Gormon Peake along with Black Tom Heddle are displayed on spears. Bloodraven, in gratitude to Dunk, gives him the gold to ransom his armor back. Dunk then asks Bloodraven what became of the dragon egg. Bloodraven tells Dunk it was taken by an agent of his who crawled up the privy shaft of the castle to take the egg from its guarded chamber, and is now safe. Dunk remarks that a man wouldn't have fit in those shafts. Bloodraven replies a child would have. Or a dwarf, Dunk thinks as he remembers the performing dwarfs at the wedding.

After Egg took the [[Iron Throne]] as King [[Aegon V Targaryen]], he asked Dunk to join the Kingsguard and he eventually became the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Aegon named his first son and heir [[Duncan Targaryen|Duncan]], who was called Duncan the Small in contrast to his namesake. He has a huge white belly and a pair of heavy breasts that sag like sacks of suet covered with coarse yellow hair. His bedrobe is large enough to serve as a tourney pavilion.

He reminds [[Tyrion]] of a dead sea cow that once washed up in the caverns under [[Casterly Rock]]. When he laughs his flesh bounces vigorously. He tends to stroke one of the prongs of his oiled yellow beard, a gesture which [[Tyrion]] finds remarkably obscene.

While in the litter with Viserys and Illyrio on the way to Khal [[Drogo]]'s manse, [[Daenerys]] can smell the stench of Illyrio's flesh through his heavy perfumes.

The gemstone rings on his hands are onyx and opal, tiger’s eye and tourmaline, ruby, amethyst, sapphire, emerald, jet and jade, a black diamond, and a green pearl. [[Tyrion]] thinks to himself that he could live for years on those rings, though he'd need a cleaver to claim them.

Earlier on, when [[Arya]] sees Illyrio with [[Varys]] by the well, it appears to her that he seems to walk lightly, carrying his weight as a water dancer might. His rings glimmer in the torchlight, red-gold and pale silver, crusted with rubies, sapphires, and slitted yellow tiger eyes; every finger bears a ring, some two.

In his youth, however, Illyrio was a [[sellsword]] and was muscular and exceptionally handsome.

A statue of his youthful self carved by [[Pytho Malanon]] graces the court in his manse. It is of a naked boy standing in the water of a marble pool, poised to duel with a bravo’s blade in hand. He is lithe and handsome, no older than sixteen, with straight blond hair that brushes his shoulders. So lifelike does the statue seem that it takes [[Tyrion]] a moment to realise he is made of painted marble, though his sword simmers like true steel.

Illyrio says he once wept looking at the statue of himself then and looking at himself now.{{Ref|aDwD|1}}

==History==
As a young man, Illyrio was a poor [[bravos|bravo]], living by his blade. After the young [[Varys]] arrived in [[Pentos]] they formed an unlikely friendship and worked together and became very rich. Illyrio grew very respectable and married the maiden daughter of a cousin of the [[Prince of Pentos]]. After she died, he remarried at least once, to a [[Lys]]ene pillowhouse worker, [[Serra]]. This infuriated the Prince, who barred the palace to him forever after. Illyrio was very happy with Serra until a [[Treasure|Braavosi trading galley]] - carrying the plague - anchored in Pentos. Through the rats the plague left the ship and killed two thousand in the city, among them Serra. Illyrio keeps a locket with Serra's picture and her hands as a reminder of his lost love.{{Ref|aDwD|5}}

Even decades after Varys left to serve in [[Westeros]] the two still keep in close contact.

Illyrio has watched over the remaining [[House Targaryen|Targaryens]], having them stay at his manse under his protection. [[Daenerys Targaryen|Daenerys]] and [[Viserys Targaryen]] stayed half a year before Dany's marriage to Khal [[Drogo]]. He was smitten at first by the beauty of [[Daenerys Targaryen]] and thought of eliminating Viserys and claiming her as a wife, but dismissed this idea soon as he believed the girl too timid and frightened and that coupling with her would give him no pleasure. He claims he protected Viserys and Daenerys on the grounds that Viserys promised to make him the [[Master of Coin]] upon his ascension to the Iron Throne.{{Ref|aDwD|5}}

He also inflames Viserys' ambitions by telling him of Westerosi people awaiting the return of their rightful king, of men drinking toasts to his health and women sewing dragon banners in secret.

Illyrio brokered the arranged marriage between [[Daenerys Targaryen]] and [[Khal Drogo]] to use Drogo's powerful ''[[khalasar]]'' as an invasion force. He also worked with Varys, King [[Robert Baratheon|Robert]]'s spymaster, to engineer a strategic period of weakness for the Targaryens' invasion. He gifted Daenerys at her wedding with three petrified [[dragon egg]]s, not expecting that Daenerys would hatch them. Tyrion though reluctant and wary saw it as his only chance to gain his birthright and agreed to travel to her. Illyrio also reveals that his interest in supporting the Targaryens is to become the Master of Coin of the Seven Kingdoms.

When a suspicious Tyrion further questions Illyrio as to his true motivations for helping Queen Daenerys Illyrio says,
