Lords are not bound by law or custom to support their relatives; some do, by giving their kin posts and positions or by granting them vassal holdfasts. == Inheritance ==
Inheritance laws in Seven Kingdoms are not clear-cut. Most nobles of [[Seven Kingdoms]], influenced by the [[Andal]] traditions, practice male-preference [[w:primogeniture|primogeniture]], while customs of [[Dorne]] and possibly the [[Iron Islands]] are different from the other kingdoms. In Dorne, no distinction is made between sons and daughters, with children inheriting in order of birth regardless of gender{{Ref|aGoT|62}}. It is unclear whether women can inherit in their own right in the Iron Islands. In the rest of the Seven kingdoms a man's eldest son is his heir, followed by his second son, then his third son, and so on. In theory, the youngest son is followed in the line of succession by the eldest daughter, after whom come her sisters in birth order{{Ref|aGoT|62}}, but in practice usually its sons... and then whoever can manage to convince the local overlord that he ought to inherit or the sword can be all the hereditary justification that is needed, as in the case of [[Robert Baratheon]]. Still there many examples of ladies who rule in their own right: Lady [[Arwyn Oakheart]] is prominent in the Reach, much as [[Anya Waynwood]] is in the Vale and [[Maege Mormont]] is in the North.

Noble titles (e.g. Lord of a certain place) and lands are passed on within families; [[Knight|knighthood]] is not inherited but is conferred on individuals independently due to merit, not birth. In the Great Houses, where elder siblings inherit a significant title and lands, small holdings and keeps may be granted to their younger brothers, who hold their lands as bannermen{{Ref|aGoT|5}}. Variations may arise, particularly in relation to the place of daughters: though by law a daughter should inherit before her uncle or cousin{{Ref|aDwD|44}}, a male relative may stake a claim and be judged a better choice to be heir{{Ref|aCoK|16}}. A lord may lay out specific terms for inheritance or pass over their offspring in his will. It invites legal wrangling after their death, and potentially violence during it, but it has happened. The role of legitimised [[Bastardy|bastards]] throughout the Seven Kingdoms is also unclear i.e. whether they follow trueborn children, or join the line of succession in order of birth as if they had been trueborn all along. Unlegitimised bastards have no legal claim.
Heirs born into a different house drop their birth surname when they come into their inheritance, adopting the name of the inherited house as their own{{Ref|aCoK|16}}. Therefore, in theory is it all but impossible for a noble house to become extinct: with enough research, each line can be traced back to the Age of Heroes and is highly unlikely to have no modern descendants.

Marriage customs vary considerably between the lands and major faiths, i.e. followers of the [[old gods]], the [[Faith of the Seven]], [[R%27hllor|R’hllor]], and the [[Drowned God]]. All appear to be religious ceremonies between one man and one woman (who should not be more closely related than first cousins), involving the exchange of vows in the presence of particular sacred witnesses e.g. a [[Septon]], a [[Weirwood|heart tree]]{{Ref|aCoK|34}}, or a priest/ess. Followed by the feast, where the bride and groom eat and drink with everyone and Finally, there is the bedding.

While we know [[Valyrian Freehold|old Valyria]] to allow a varied traditions, allowing the marriage between brother and sister, which the [[House Targaryen|Targaryens]] has brought to the Seven kingdoms. However they were never accepted by the general population, to the extent that such unions are deemed ungodly and even accursed.

Vows said at swordpoint are not held to be valid{{Ref|aCoK|36}}, and in theory a person cannot be declared to be married if they refuse to say the vows{{Ref|aSoS|81}}. However, there are still issues of consent. Marriages may be conducted between children or even babies; this is unusual and tends to occur when inheritances are the chief concern{{Ref|aCoK|26}}.

In the cult of the Drowned God, it is possible for someone to be married by proxy without their consent and without saying the vows for oneself{{Ref|aDwD|26}}.

In the Faith of the Seven, a marriage that has not been consummated can be set aside by the High Septon or a Council of Faith{{Ref|aCoK|34}}. For boys fifteen is considered almost a man grown (sixteen is age of majority){{Ref|aGoT|19}} A girl is not considered a woman until her first menstruation, or flowering as the folk of the Seven Kingdom say. More precisely, she is a maiden who is both still a child and a woman at the same time.{{Ref|aCoK|31}} Eleven is seen as old enough for a girl to be betrothed, but marriage tends to wait a few years.

It is not uncommon for a noble maiden, betrothed early, to wed within the year following her first flowering and normally expect to be married by twenty (smallfolk tend to marry a bit later). Noble boys of about seven or eight are often sent to other noble houses to be raised until they reach the age of majority. The boys serve as pages and squires, acquiring training in arms, law, and courtesy.

==Hospitality==

The obligations of hospitality are taken very seriously in [[Westeros]]. After hospitality has been offered and accepted, the guest is afforded the [[guest right]] by the host, which protects the guest, at least for the length of the stay. It lasted "close to a year" <ref>[[A Game of Thrones]], [[A Game of Thrones-Chapter 12|Chapter 12]], Eddard</ref> and resulted in the end of the Targaryen dynasty in the [[Seven Kingdoms]] and the beginning of Robert Baratheon's reign.

==Causes==
The conflict was instigated after [[Rhaegar Targaryen]] had kidnapped [[Lyanna Stark]], who was betrothed to [[Robert Baratheon]]. Despite the pleading of [[Hoster Tully]] for patience, her brother [[Brandon Stark]] rode to the city of [[King's Landing]]. There, he went into the [[Red Keep]] shouting for Prince Rhaegar to come out and die. King [[Aerys II]] arrested him and his companions (his squire [[Ethan Glover]], [[Jeffory Mallister]], [[Kyle Royce]], and the nephew and heir of the Lord of the Eyrie [[Elbert Arryn]]) for threatening and conspiring to murder the crown prince.{{Ref|aCoK|55}}

King Aerys II, who had become increasingly paranoid, since his several months of confined imprisonment during the [[Defiance of Duskendale]], had ordered the fathers of the prisoners to come south to answer the charges against their sons. When they did, they and their sons were all murdered without trial.{{Ref|aCoK|55}} [[Ethan Glover]] was the only survivor. Lord [[Rickard Stark]], who demanded a trial by combat, was roasted in his armor, as his son Brandon was put in a strangulation device and was forced to watch, strangling himself in the process of trying to save his father. {{Ref|aCoK|55}} Soon after, the Mad King demanded the heads of [[Robert Baratheon]] and [[Eddard Stark]] from their guardian, [[Jon Arryn]], Lord of the Eyrie. ==Combatants==
When Lord Arryn raised his banners in revolt, many of his bannermen sided with the King, chief among them Lord [[Randyll Grafton]], who called the other loyalists to aid him in barring the rebels from entering the port of [[Gulltown]]. Eddard Stark decided to make his own way back to the North via the [[Fingers]]. Gulltown's defenses eventually fell, with Robert returning to [[Storm's End]] after slaying Marq Grafton. Both he and Eddard then called on their own bannermen.

Next [[House Tully]] joined the war on the rebels' side, following the marriage of Eddard and Jon to [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] and [[Lysa Tully|Lysa]] respectively, binding House Stark, Tully and Arryn together.{{Ref|aGoT|2}} However, like in the Vale, not all the Tully bannermen joined the rebel cause. Houses [[House Ryger|Ryger]], [[House Darry|Darry]], [[House Goodbrook|Goodbrook]] and [[House Mooton|Mooton]] took the side of the Targaryens in the war and [[House Frey|Frey]] remained neutral until the situation became clearer.

After all the rebels were united, it was decided they would stand behind Robert, whose grandmother had been the [[Rhaelle Targaryen|daughter]] of King [[Aegon V Targaryen]], giving him the best claim to the throne outside of Aerys, his children and grandchildren.

In turn, King Aerys summoned his own banners. The '''Battle of Summerhall''' (1 on the map) was actually three battles all fought on one day. Robert hit three independent loyalist forces before they could converge upon him. Lords [[House Grandison|Grandison]], [[House Cafferen|Cafferen]], and [[House Fell|Fell]] planned to join their hosts at [[Summerhall]] and march on Storm’s End, but Robert learned of their plans and struck first, attacking each army individually as they arrived. Lord Fell died in the battle and Robert's forces captured his son, Silveraxe. Lords Grandison and Cafferen, both loyalist commanders, went over to Robert after the battle, as did Silveraxe.

Lord Cafferen, a former Loyalist turned rebel after the Battle of Summerhall, was cut down by Randyll Tarly while fighting under Robert’s banner. Lord Tarly sent Lord Cafferen’s head to King Aerys. By all indications, the battle was indecisive, however Mace likes to remember it as his one great victory over Robert despite his lack of involvement.

Aerys favored the advice of [[Pycelle|Grand Maester Pycelle]] over that of his spymaster [[Varys]] and opened the gates of the city. The Lannister forces then began to sack the city in Robert's name. Realizing all was lost, Aerys ordered his most recent Hand, the [[Alchemists' Guild|pyromancer]] Rossart, to ignite the wildfire caches throughout the city, saying, "Let [Robert] be king over charred bones and cooked meat. Let him be the king of ashes."

Aerys then ordered [[Jaime Lannister]], one of his Kingsguard and Tywin's own son, to kill his father. Instead, Jaime slew Lord Rossart and then murdered Aerys himself on the [[Iron Throne]]. Tywin sent his knights, [[Gregor Clegane]] and [[Amory Lorch]], to deal with the rest of the royal family, securing the throne for Robert and proving that [[House Lannister]] had forsaken the Targaryens forever. Gregor killed the baby crown prince Aegon while his mother watched, and then raped and murdered Princess Elia herself. Amory dragged princess Rhaenys from under her father's bed and killed her. When Eddard Stark arrived shortly thereafter, he found Jaime seated on the Iron Throne and Aerys's corpse slumped below it. So far the Others have appeared in the flesh only twice in the whole saga and their purpose remains unknown at this time.

According to legend, the Others first appeared during a winter that lasted a generation and a period of darkness known as [[the Long Night]]. Eventually they were defeated, supposedly by the [[Night's Watch]] and [[The Wall]] may have been raised as a defence against them. In apparent contradiction the [[Night's King]] appears to have married a White Walker, but after he was defeated the Others are not heard of again and became regarded south of the Wall as nothing more than fairy tales to frighten the little children.

It has been indicated that Craster might sacrifice his infant sons to the Others, and at least one of his wives believes those sons have become White Walkers.

The Others appear in the prologue to AGoT as tall and gaunt with flesh pale as milk and blue eyes, deeper and bluer than human eyes, burning like ice, while the White Walker who married the Night's King is similarly described as having skin as pale as the moon and eyes like blue stars. They wear reflective armor that shifts in color with every step rather like the stealth armor once said to have been worn by the Children of the Forest. They appear to be superior swordsmen, wielding thin crystal swords that said so cold as to shatter any object they touch, including the steel blades favoured by the Night's Watch.{{Ref|aGoT|Prologue}} Their [[languages|language]] is unknown, although it may be the Old Tongue, when one spoke in the prologue his voice was said to sound like the cracking of ice, but this was probably a figure of speech. Being dead Wights feel no pain and will continue to fight regardless of injury. Though they can be stopped by total dismemberment, their limbs will continue to move if detached from their bodies. The '''Others''', known as the "White Walkers" among the [[wildlings]](Free Folk) exist north of the [[Wall]]. Before the events in the [[A Song of Ice and Fire|Novel]], the Others had supposedly not been seen for many thousand years. So far the Others have appeared in the flesh only twice in the whole saga and their purpose remains unknown at this time.

According to legend, the Others first appeared during a winter that lasted a generation and a period of darkness known as [[the Long Night]]. Eventually they were defeated, supposedly by the [[Night's Watch]] and [[The Wall]] may have been raised as a defence against them. In apparent contradiction the [[Night's King]] appears to have married a White Walker, but after he was defeated the Others are not heard of again and became regarded south of the Wall as nothing more than fairy tales to frighten the little children.

It has been indicated that Craster might sacrifice his infant sons to the Others, and at least one of his wives believes those sons have become White Walkers.

The Others appear in the prologue to AGoT as tall and gaunt with flesh pale as milk and blue eyes, deeper and bluer than human eyes, burning like ice, while the White Walker who married the Night's King is similarly described as having skin as pale as the moon and eyes like blue stars. They wear reflective armor that shifts in color with every step rather like the stealth armor once said to have been worn by the Children of the Forest.
