Pate is among the rangers who escort Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, and the six new recruits of the Night's Watch who follow the old gods (Hareth, Arron, Emrick, Satin and the wildlings Leathers and Jax) to the grove of weirwoods in the haunted forest where they swear their vows.[1]
