Tyrion IV

Synopsis

Tyrion mocks Ser Alliser during dinner at the Lord Commander’s table. Ser Jaremy Rykker explains how he and Ser Alliser fought for King Aerys II Targaryen at the Sack of King's Landing and how they came to be on the Wall. The victorious Lord Tywin Lannister gave them the choice between execution or joining the Night's Watch. After Thorne leaves in disgust, blind Maester Aemon declares that Tyrion "is a giant come among us, here at the end of the world". It leaves Tyrion speechless for once in his life.

Later, Lord Commander Mormont beseeches Tyrion to speak to the King and his lord father about the condition of the Watch. He tells Tyrion that the Watch now totals under a thousand men, and that he has but three men to guard each mile of the Wall. Even more troubling is news that the wildlings are massing and all moving south in greater numbers; they are running scared, frightened of something gathering strength in the north. Tyrion knows that the king and his father will ignore him but nevertheless he will explain to them the need of the Watch and promises this to Mormont.

When Tyrion leaves Mormont’s chambers, he is taken with a whim to see the Wall one last time. He takes a winch up to the top, and meets Jon. Jon asks Tyrion to help Bran, as Tyrion had helped him. Again Tyrion promises that he will, and Jon calls him ‘friend’.
