Bran was finally getting to ride outside of the castle in the oversize saddle that the Imp had drawn up for him. He had been riding a horse he named Dancer in the yard for the past fortnight, getting bolder each time. He had originally felt uncomfortable, but the straps around his thighs and chest keep him in the saddle. This is the first time he has been out of the castle since his fall, and now it was snowing: Winter is Coming. He would have preferred to have gone out with just his brother Robb, but the new Captain of Guard, Hallis Mollen, would not allow it, and Maester Luwin agreed. The party includes the Robb, the Master of Horse, Joseth, Theon, Maester Luwin and the direwolves. They pass through the village, and there are two serving wenches by the ale house, and Theon calls out to them. One blushes and Theon rides up to Robb: she squirms like a weasel in bed but say anything to her in the road and she blushes. Theon is going on, but Robb tells him not to talk about things like this around his brother. Bran notes that Robb seemed to admire Theon, but Bran has never warmed to him. Bran asks to go faster, and Robb tells him to go ahead. Robb is ahead when Bran brings Dancer to a gallop, and catches up to him at the edge of the Wolfswood. Bran is exclaims that he can ride, and Robb smiles, but Bran can tell something is bothering his brother; Robb notes that something is bothering the direwolves, but there was  also a raven last night. The news recently from the ravens had not been good: Benjen Stark has still not appeared, and messages from mother about the Imp being taken. Robb had sent riders with Robb’s commands throughout the north. Nobody had told him what was happening, but he knew it was about the Lannisters and not good—there was something about the Lannisters that he ought to remember, but when tried to think what he became dizzy and his stomach clenched. The message was from Alyn in King's Landing about the murder of Jory Cassel, Wyl and Heward, and their father breaking his leg in the fight with the Kingslayer’s men. Bran cannot understand why anyone would kill Jory, who he liked and had chased him across the roofs of Winterfell. Robb promises Bran that he “will not let this be forgotten.” Theon wants Robb to call the banners. Bran exclaims that only the lord can call the banners, and Theon replies that if Eddard dies, Robb is lord of Winterfell. Robb notes to Bran that the honor of the north is in his hands. Bran asks if Maester Luwin agrees with calling the banners, and Theon states the maester is as timid as an old woman. Bran tells Robb that father and mother listened to their council; Robb states that he does listen to them.

Bran is getting anxious about the others when four ragged men and two women surround Bran. Bran can tell they are neither foresters nor farmers and suddenly Bran thinks of how richly he is dressed. The biggest man asks if he is lost and Bran tells that he is not and that his guard will be there shortly. Bran, seeing their cloths, believes that the rags could be black of the Night's Watch; he remembers that his father said a deserter is most dangerous since they know their life is forfeit. They demand his silver pin and the horse, telling him to get down. He tells them he cannot, and they do not believe him. The big man grabs the reins before he thinks of turning and riding off. Finally, the tall woman Osha sees the straps. The short woman asks if he is a cripple, and, angered, Bran tells them he is Brandon Stark and that they better let go of his horse or they will be dead. With Bran’s arrogant outburst, a gaunt man states that he has to be a Stark because would threaten where smarter men would beg. The short woman now tells the others to cut off his cock and stuff it in his mouth. Osha tells the short woman that she is as stupid as she is ugly: Mance Rayder who would pay well for the blood of Benjen Stark. The big man states that he does not want to go back to the White Walkers, and cuts the strap on Bran’s saddle, cutting him deeply. Bran feels nothing, but starts to feel light headed.

Bran asks to go faster, and Robb tells him to go ahead. Robb is ahead when Bran brings Dancer to a gallop, and catches up to him at the edge of the Wolfswood. Bran exclaims his excitement at being able to ride, and Robb smiles, but Bran can tell something is bothering his brother. Robb notes that something is bothering the direwolves as well before admitting there was a raven the night before. The news recently from the ravens has not been good: Uncle Benjen has still not appeared and their mother has taken Tyrion Lannister captive. Robb had sent riders with commands throughout the north. Nobody had told him what was happening, but Bran knew it was about the Lannisters and not good—there is something about the Lannisters that Bran knows he ought to remember, but when he tries to think what it is he becomes dizzy and his stomach clenches.

Suddenly Robb calls out telling them to put down their steel. Bran sees that Robb is mounted with the body of an elk over the back of the horse. They tell Robb that it is one against 6, and to put down his sword. Then the direwolves appear at Robb’s whistle. Robb charges, killing one before matching Osha. When she overextends, Robb rides her down. The wolves take the others except the big man, Stiv, who cuts Bran for the saddle to fall into the stream. Stiv puts his knife to Bran’s throat, and tells Robb to drop his sword, which he does, the fury going out of his eyes. Then Stiv tells Robb to call them off, which he does. Bran can see that Osha is still alive. Stiv tells Osha to kill the wolves, and she refuses to go near the wolves. So Stiv orders Robb to kill the wolves, and Bran screams “No” knowing that if Robb kills the wolves they are dead. Suddenly Stiv has Theon’s arrow through his chest, and he collapses into the stream.

Bran tells Robb that father and mother listened to the maester’s council; Robb states that he listens to everyone.

As the guardsmen appear, Osha glances around, throws down her spear and asks for mercy. The guardsmen have a pale look to their features as they look at the carnage. Theon is proud of himself, but Robb states that Jon always said you were an ass. Theon tells Robb that he should be thanking him. Robb replies that there were a lot of things that could have happened that would have resulted in Bran’s harm. Then Robb asks the guardsmen where they were, but they waited for the maester and then Theon spied a turkey. Robb is angrier than Bran had ever seen him. He asks the maester how Bran is, and the maester says it is not bad. Robb can tell two were from the Night's Watch.

Then the wolves howl and Robb rides off to get them, asking Bran to stay there.

The question then comes on what to do with Osha, who is a head taller than Robb. She drops to her knees and asks Robb to give her her life and she is his. Robb asks what he would do with an oath breaker. She tells him she broke no oaths; the black crows have no place for woman. Theon suggests that they give her to the wolves, which causes Osha shutter and some of the guardsmen look queasy. The maester suggests that they should question her, so Robb orders her bound and brought to the castle.

Synopsis

Bran is finally getting to ride outside of the castle in the oversize saddle that Tyrion Lannister designed for him. He has been riding a horse he named Dancer in the yard for the past fortnight, getting bolder each time. At first, the straps around his thighs and chest that keep him in the saddle felt uncomfortable.

Bran would have preferred to have gone out with just his brother Robb, but neither Maester Luwin nor the new Captain of Guard, Hallis Mollen, would allow it.

The message was from Alyn in King's Landing about the murder of their father’s guardsmen and of their father breaking his leg in the fight with the Kingslayer’s men.
