Sansa is in despair in her room in Maegor's Holdfast, reliving the beheading of her father. Eventually, Joffrey arrives telling her to get dressed and attend him. She resists, and he has the Hound get her out of bed. Sandor tells her to do as she’s bid, calls her child, and pushes her almost gently toward her wardrobe. Sansa pleads to go home, then tells Joffrey that she hates him. The King has Ser Meryn slap her, then leaves telling her to attend him later. The Hound tells her to save herself some pain and not resist him. Ser Meryn comes for her later, and she tells him that he is no true knight, but the Kingsguard does not care. Sansa attends the King in the throne room as he dispenses justice, every case with violence or death. Later, he brings her to the wall over the gatehouse where the traitors’ heads are mounted on spikes. Joff forces her to look at her father’s head and Septa Mordane’s. Joff tells her that Robb defeated his uncle Jaime by treachery, and promises her Robb’s head as a gift. When Sansa says that maybe Robb will give her Joff’s head, the King has Ser Meryn beat her again. As Sansa is lying on her hands and knees she contemplates rushing Joffrey and knocking him off the gatehouse wall to his death. But the Hound interposes himself between her and Joff, and gently wipes the blood off her mouth.

She believes she will be executed, and thought of being executed also does not bother her; she thinks of the songs that will be sung about her. She considers throwing herself out the window, but cannot and runs back to her bed sobbing. She has dream of footsteps that belong to Ser Ilyn Payne coming for her with Ice. Finally Joffery arrives with the Hound and two others of the Kingsguard. Joffery throws the curtains of the bed open and tells her that she will attend him in court that afternoon. Sansa begs him to leave her be, but Joffery threatens to have his Hound do it. When she does not move, he orders his dog to get her out of bed. She struggles as he bed, her blankets fall away to show that she only wears a thin bed gown. Sandor then tells her “Do as you are bid child, dress.” He almost gently pushes her to the wardrobe. She tells Joffrey that she did as she was asked, and now only wants to go home. Joffrey tell her that his mother says he is still to marry her. She responds that she does not want to marry him because he killed her father. He tells her he was merciful, he gave him a clean death. Sansa now really sees him for the first time, and cannot believe she had found him handsome. After she whispers that she hates him, he tells her that his mother has said he should not strike his wife, and orders Ser Meryn to strike her which he does with that back of his gloved fist. She sprawls senseless to the floor, her ear bloody. She agrees, and the all but the Hound leave. Sandor tells her that she should save herself some pain and give Joffrey what he wants: she is to smile, smell sweet, and be his lady love.

Two maids creep timidly into the chamber, and she instructs them to prepare a bath, and to get powder to hide the bruise and swelling. She was amazed at how dirty the water became. She choose the green silk gown she had worn at the Tourney of the Hand when Joffery had been sweet to her—maybe he would remember and be gentle.

Ser Meryn escorts her to the throne room; from Sansa’s observation of Ser Meryn she realizes he feels nothing towards her. Sansa tells Ser Meryn that he is no true knight, which she thought the Hound would find amusing, and got no reaction. She is alone on the balcony as Joffrey dispenses what he considered justice. Mostly he let his Small council make the decision, but when he intervenes he will not be dissuaded. She sees the ugly face of Janos Slynt at the council table and remembers how he had thrown down her father for Ser Ilyn to behead, and notices how he nods at each of Joffrey’s brutal judgements. She wishes some hero would cut off his head but there are no heroes, remembering Petyr Baelish telling her “Life is not a song;” she thinks “In life, the monsters win.” The last case was a singer accused of singing a song ridiculing King Robert Baratheon. He must sing the song, and Sansa thinks it is funny, but in some verses it seemed like he was singing about the queen. Joffrey gave him the option of keeping his fingers or his tongue.

When the court is dismissed, Sansa flees the balcony only to be met by Joffery, Ser Meryn, and the Hound. He examines her and tells her she looks much better, and she thanks him with hollow words. Joffrey then tells her to walk with him—the touch of his hand now makes her skin crawl. Joffrey tells her that she is a truly a stupid girl, and that her mother had said so, and is worried if their children will be stupid. The words still hurt her and she thinks that the Hound was right, she is “only a little bird, repeating the words they taught her.” Joffrey then tells her that he will get her with child as soon as possible, and if the child is stupid, she will lose her head and find a smarter wife. He now asks when she can have children and she tells him, not being able to look at him, that Septa Mordane told her twelve or thirteen.

She now realizes where they are going to where they are going, the Gatehouse, and begs not to go there. Joffrey tells her that he wants to show her how traitors are handled, and that he will have Ser Meryn drag her if she refuses. The Hound tells her to just do it. Realizing that the Hound is right, she climbs what seems like a thousand steps. She looks around, and Joffrey asks what she is looking at and instructs her to look at the heads of her father, the septa and a dozen more. Her father, and it does not look like him or even real. She cannot understand why he would kill the septa and he tells her she was a traitor. He then asks again what she will give him for his name day, which will be soon. He then tells her that her brother is a traitor also, and used treachery and deceit to defeat Jaime. He then tells her that he has to stay in King's Landing in case his uncles attack, but he does not care, and will leave after his name day to raise a host to take her brother’s head to give to her. She then suggests that her brother may give her his head. This mistake results in two harder blows by Ser Meryn. Joffrey tells her to clean off the blood, and she is about to take this opportunity to shove Joffrey off the edge when the Hound comes between her and Joffrey to gently dab the blood from her broken lip. She thanks him; she is a good girl and remembers her courtesies.
