Contents
Appearance and personality
He is a tall man, but grey and round-shouldered, with big watery, red eyes, and gnarled hands.[2] He is said to have hungry eyes, a thin beard that does not conceal his weak chin and a bald head. He is a seasoned soldier but is regarded as a commander not a swordsman, he is cruel and clever. [3]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Ser Aenys commands the fifteen hundred men of the House Frey who are part of Lord Bolton's army that takes Harrenhal with the aid of the Brave Companions.[4] Despite his responsibilities, he often seems lost and reluctant to assume a position of command.
After King Stannis Baratheon's defeat at the Battle of the Blackwater, Ser Aenys was in favor of a fall back to the Green Fork's north bank, stressing to Lord Roose Bolton that he would not be able to hold Harrenhal if Lord Tywin Lannister was to attack them with all of his forces. But Roose reminds him that Lord Tywin has to organize his Grandson's wedding and so he will not attack them anytime soon.[5]
A Storm of Swords
Ser Aenys is among the Freys that meet Ser Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth when they arrive at Harrenhal as prisoners of the Brave Companions.
A Feast for Crows
Ser Aenys and Ser Hosteen Frey command the two thousand Frey swords that were sent with Lord Roose Bolton to retake the North.[6]
A Dance with Dragons
Is present at the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to "Arya Stark". When men at arms were being murdered, Aenys believed Theon Greyjoy was responsible till Barbrey Ryswell pointed out he didnt have the strength or the will.
His second son, Rhaegar Frey, is one of the three Freys "lost" en route to Winterfell from White Harbor. Roose sends Ser Aenys and Ser Hosteen in the vanguard against Stannis Baratheon.
The Winds of Winter
It is revealed that Aenys fell from his horse and broke his neck when he and his men rode into pit traps planted near Winterfell by Mors Umber and his levies. This news pleases Stannis, as it means command of the Frey forces now falls to Ser Hosteen, who is not the brightest.[7]
