Aeron Greyjoy, known as Damphair, is a priest of the Drowned God and the younger brother of Balon Greyjoy. In A Feast for Crows he becomes a POV Character. He is tall and thin with fierce black eyes and a beak of a nose.

History

Aeron was an idle and ribald drunk in his youth. He once wagered his ship against a flock of goats that he could douse a hearth-fire by urinating on it. After nearly drowning when his ship was sunk in the Greyjoy Rebellion, he experienced a spiritual reawakening, and dedicated himself to the worship of the Drowned God. He became hard, humorless, ascetic, living as a hermit on the beach. Fellow holy men, called Drowned Men, do his bidding without question, and he is greatly respected by the ironborn in general.[1]

Aeron fears his brother Euron for reasons that are not presently clear, though it is hinted that he may have been sexually molested during his childhood. He has recurring memories and nightmares of a door with screeching hinges, which he associates with Euron.[2] He is still afflicted with guilt over the death of his brother Urrigon, who died from the infection of a wound that occurred while he and Aeron performed the Finger Dance, a traditional axe-juggling game among the Ironborn.[3]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

When Theon Greyjoy was sent by Robb Stark to the Iron Islands to negotiate an alliance Aeron brought him to Pyke.[4] Balon declined the alliance offer and instead sent Theon to raid the Stony Shore. Aeron was ordered to accompany him.[5] The Ironmen took Benfred Tallhart prisoner and Aeron commanded that he be drowned. After the first raid Theon decided to take Winterfell. Aeron went on to raid the next village.[6]

A Feast for Crows

After Balon's death and Euron's return, Aeron used his influence as a high priest of the Drowned God to bring about a Kingsmoot for the selection of Balon's replacement.[7] He had hoped to crown his brother Victarion, whom he knew would continue Balon's traditional and conservative ways. The plan went awry, however, and Euron was able to claim the throne. Aeron announced plans to try to rouse the people against the "godless" Euron, and disappeared the next day. His fate is unknown.

Appearance

Aeron wears a roughspun robe and never cuts his hair. He weaves seaweed into his long mane and beard.[8] He is tall and thin, with dark eyes and a beak of a nose.[9]
