Alaric Stark was a Lord of Winterfell and head of House Stark in 58 AC, during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. [1]

History

Lord Alaric wed a Mormont of Bear Island. She died in 55 AC, but not before giving him two strong sons, and a sweet daughter, Alarra.

Alaric received Queen Alysanne Targaryen during the royal progress to Winterfell in 58 AC. Alaric was infamous for having a flinty, stern personality, niggardly with his money, and humorless. Having heard what happened to Harrenhal (both during the Conquest and the Faith Militant uprising) he asked that the queen not take her dragon, Silverwing, within the castle walls. He also declined her initial offers to arrange marriage alliances for his sons at southron courts, pointing out that the Starks keep the old gods. He also scoffed at not wanting to have to feast a large royal delegation, citing that "winter is coming" - despite the fact that 58 AC took place in a summer year.

Queen Alysanne, however, persisted with her stubborn charm, and as he thawed, she discovered that his reputation was exaggerated: his taciturn humor had an edge to it, and he was careful with his coin but not an ill host. After thawing to the queen's persistent charm, he took her hunting in the Wolfswood for elk and wild boar, and showed her the bones of a giants.

Behind the Scenes

Earlier prints of The World of Ice & Fire state that Lord Ellard Stark was the lord who had been forced to give up the lands that would become known as the New Gift.[2] However, it has been confirmed that this is an error,[3] and that the statement would be replaced by "the Starks were glad" in later prints, leaving it unknown for the time being which Stark had been the lord in question.

Alaric Stark may be a reworked version of Ellard Stark.
