The Alchemist
Allegiance Faceless Men
Book A Feast for Crows

The Alchemist is a man encountered by Pate in Oldtown, and is widely believed to be an assumed identity of the Faceless Man assassin that was known to Arya Stark as Jaqen H'ghar.

A Feast for Crows

The Alchemist is met by Pate outside the Quill and Tankard pub after Pate meets with some of his friends. Pate has stolen the personal key of the senile Archmaester Walgrave, which is reported to be capable of opening any door in the Citadel, as part of an arrangement between the two that had been agreed upon three days prior. In return for the key, The Alchemist has promised Pate a gold coin, with which Pate intends to purchase the dowry of his beloved Rosey. The indirect "transformation" of lead (the key) into gold (the coin) is the source of The Alchemist's name.[1]

Pate asks the Alchemist to reveal his face to him, which he does. They complete their transaction, during which Pate admits to being a thief. Shortly after, Pate falls to the ground and dies.[2]

Appearance

The Alchemist is described as having a hooked nose and thick, black, curly hair, with a slight scar on his right cheek[3]. Because this is an identical description to that of the identity assumed by the Faceless Man assassin known to Arya Stark as Jaqen H'ghar[4], it is believed that the two are the same person.
