Played by Owen Teale

Ser Alliser Thorne is a master-at-arms of the Night's Watch at Castle Black. He is a fifty year old man, heft, dry and hard, with eyes as black as onyx and black hairs ridged with white.[1] The tone of his voice and his contempt makes him hated by all the Night's Watch's recruits. In the TV series he is played by Owen Teale.[2]

Knight of House Thorne of the Crownlands, he was sent to the Night's Watch by Lord Tywin Lannister after the fall of House Targaryen and the sacking of King's Landing, where he had been a defender during Robert's Rebellion.[3]

Recent Events

In A Game of Thrones

He gives Jon Snow the mocking nickname of Lord Snow. His disdain turns into hatred when Jon replies to one of his mockeries, provoking the hilarity of the whole common room of Castle Black.

Having absolutely no humor, he takes the mockeries of Tyrion Lannister poorly, when, while visiting the Wall, he is invited to the table of the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, Jeor Mormont. He is however so delighted at Jon Snow's appointment to the stewards, that Jon thinks he is behind it. He never misses an occasion to provoke the young bastard, and the evening Jon learns of the imprisonment of Lord Eddard Stark in King's Landing for treason, his jeers anger Jon, who tries to attack him with a knife, before being stopped and put under arrest. This mutual hostility, and the old friends well placed at the court of the master-at arms, lead the Lord Commander to send Ser Alliser to the court of the new king, Joffrey I, with the mission to acquire reinforcements for the Night's Watch. Ser Endrew Tarth takes his place as the master-at-arms of Castle Black.

In A Clash of Kings

After a long travel, Ser Alliser Thorne arrives in King's Landing. In the Red Keep, he asks for an audience with Tyrion Lannister, Hand of the King. Tyrion though, having bad memories of him, makes Bronn answer that he will see him later. He appears before the throne, only to be mocked by Tyrion, however Tyrion allowed for word to be put out in King's Landing that the Night's Watch was in need of men.

In A Storm of Swords

He becomes one of Janos Slynt's followers when he rejoins the Night's Watch.[4] During the choosing for a new Lord Commander, he came in sixth in voting on the first day, lost votes on the second day and withdrew his name and placed his support with Janos Slynt.[5]
