Areo Hotah is the captain of Doran Martell's guards. He is originally from the Free City of Norvos, where he was trained by the Bearded Priests of Norvos.

History

Areo was the youngest of six children and was sold to the bearded priests at a young age. At age 16, he completed his training. He was wedded to his axe and branded on his chest to signify the event. He came to Dorne with Mellario of Norvos when she married Doran, thus entering his service.[1] Hotah watched all of Doran's and Mellario's children grow up, and has developed a father-like love for princess Arianne Martell, whom he refers to as "little princess." Despite this affection, however, Hotah is utterly loyal to Prince Doran, and whenever Hotah has personal misgivings about the orders he recieves, he reminds himself of his simple vow, "Serve, Obey, Protect."

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

He is ordered by Doran to arrest the Sand Snakes following the death of their father, Prince Oberyn Martell.[2] Soon after he is sent by Doran to stop Arianne Martell from stealing away Myrcella Lannister with the intention of crowning her Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. During the confrontation, Ser Arys Oakheart charges Areo and his guards and is slain by Areo. He then escorts Arianne back to Sunspear to await an audience with Doran.[3]

A Dance with Dragons

Areo is present at the feast where Ser Balon Swann presents Doran Martell with the head of Gregor Clegane. Hotah notes that Swann is a more formidable warrior than Ser Arys was, if it came to a fight between Swann and Hotah.[4] Areo is present when Prince Doran discusses his plans in a private solar with Arianne, Tyene Sand, Obara Sand and Nymeria Sand.[5]

Appearance

Areo is broad-shouldered with white hair. He bears a longaxe that has a shaft six feet long.[6]
