Prince Baelon Targaryen, also known as the Spring Prince, for the season of his birth, and the Brave, was a member of House Targaryen and was the fourth born child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. He had three sons himself, Princes Viserys, Daemon and Aegon. Baelon was a dragonrider whose mount was Vhagar.[3][2][4][5]
History
Baelon was born in 57 AC and looked up to his older brother Prince Aemon. The two children became as close as brothers could be. As soon as Baelon could walk, he began to follow Aemon around everywhere he went.[1]
In 73 AC, while still a squire, Prince Baelon took part in a tourney as a mystery knight known as the Silver Fool. The tourney was in the Reach and arranged by Lord Oakheart, who was celebrating the birth of a young son with seven days of jousting. Baelon unhorsed Lord Rowan, Ser Alyn Ashford, both Fossoway twins and Lord Oakheart's own heir, Ser Denys, before falling to Ser Rickard Redwyne. After helping him to his feet, Ser Rickard unmasked the mystery knight, bade him kneel, and knighted the prince on the spot. Prince Baelon remained for the feast before returning to King's Landing, where he became a dragonrider, bonding with the mighty Vhagar. [5]
In 92 AC, after the death of his older brother, Prince Aemon, Baelon was named the heir-apparent by his father, King Jaehaerys I. He was thus named the Prince of Dragonstone, passing over Aemon's daughter and only heir, Princess Rhaenys.[4]
In 100 AC, Baelon was named Hand of the King after Lord Commander Ser Ryam Redwyne of the Kingsguard had been dismissed from the office.[2] Baelon served admirably, but tragedy struck a year later, in 101 AC, when, during a hunting trip, Baelon complained of a stitch in his side. The pain only worsened when he returned to the city. His belly swelled and hardened and his pain grew so severe he became bedridden in the Tower of the Hand, while Grand Maester Runciter tried to heal him. On the fifth day of his illness, Prince Baelon died in his bed, with his father sitting beside him holding his son's hand. After opening the prince's corpse, Runciter determined the cause of his death was a burst belly. All the Seven Kingdoms wept upon the passing of Baelon the Brave, none more so than his father Jaehaerys, who personally lit his son's funeral pyre. [6][4]
After his death, an assembly of lords held the first Great Council, to answer the question of who would succeed King Jaehaerys upon his death.[3][4] Baelon's eldest son, Viserys, was chosen and succeeded Jaehaerys I two years later as King Viserys I.[3]
Family
Baelon was married to his older sister, Alyssa, and had three sons with her: Viserys, Daemon, and Aegon.[7]
