The Band of Nine was a group of merchants, mercenaries and pirates from the Free Cities who banded together to carve out kingdoms for themselves. This group was the cause of the War of the Ninepenny Kings. They were also known as the Ninepenny Kings.

History

According to semi-canon sources, the Band of Nine began their conquests by overruning the Disputed Lands and sacking Tyrosh. There, they set up Alequo Adarys as a tyrant. They then marched on the Stepstones, conquering them with ease. From the Stepstones, Maelys Blackfyre, captain of the Golden Company and the last Blackfyre Pretender began his attempt to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.

The Targaryens responded quickly, sending their own force to the Stepstones. There, in what became known as the War of the Ninepenny Kings, Ser Barristan Selmy killed Maelys. Soon after the Band of Nine lost the Stepstones and the Disputed Lands, however Alequo managed to remain in power for another six years.[1] Another member of the Band of Nine was the Ebon Prince.
