The Battle at the Mummer's Ford was more a massacre than a battle. It involved those sent by Lord Eddard Stark, Hand of the King to arrest Ser Gregor Clegane for crimes committed in the Riverlands, and the forces of Ser Gregor Clegane.

Lord Tywin was hoping Ned Stark would lead the force and planned an ambush so he could obtain a hostage so he could trade for Tyrion. However, Ned's leg was broken by an altercation with Jaime Lannister and he could not lead himself. Ned passed over the impetuous Ser Loras Tyrell for command, naming Lord Beric Dondarrion to lead the force. With Beric, Stark sent Thoros of Myr, Ser Gladden Wylde and Lord Lothar Mallery, each of whom were to raise 20 men-at-arms, along with 20 Winterfell men (including Alyn and Harwin) to fight alongside them. The force set out along with Piper and Vance's men, but once word reached them of the Battle of the Golden Tooth, Piper and Vance left on their own to attack the Lannister supply lines and help break Jaime Lannister's siege of Riverrun.

A battle at the Mummer's Ford occurs along the Red Fork at the beginning of the War of the Five Kings.

Prelude

After Catelyn Stark takes prisoner Tyrion Lannister at the crossroads inn, Tyrion's father, Lord Tywin Lannister, retaliates by sending Ser Gregor Clegane to raid the riverlands. Without displaying their banners, the Mountain's men attack the Mummer's Ford, Sherrer, and Wendish Town.[3]

Lord Hoster Tully, Catelyn's father, responds by sending Ser Marq Piper, Ser Karyl Vance, and Ser Raymun Darry to King's Landing to demand justice for the towns that have been pillaged.[3] Tywin hopes that Lord Eddard Stark, the Hand of the King, will personally lead the force which will respond to Gregor, and an ambush is planned so that Tywin can capture Eddard as a hostage to trade for Tyrion.[2]

However, Eddard's leg is broken by an altercation with Ser Jaime Lannister in the streets of King's Landing and he cannot lead himself. Lord Stark passes over the impetuous Ser Loras Tyrell, instead granting command to Beric Dondarrion and tasking the Lord of Blackhaven with killing Gregor in the name of King Robert I Baratheon. Beric, Thoros of Myr, Ser Gladden Wylde, and Lord Lothar Mallery are each to raise twenty men-at-arms, and Eddard provides twenty House Stark guards (including Alyn and Harwin) to fight alongside them.[3] Raymun Darry joins the royal party as well.[2]

Battle

The force under Lord Beric Dondarrion is intercepted at the Mummer's Ford by forces from House Lannister. They make a fighting retreat only to be taken in the rear by Ser Gregor Clegane and the Mountain's men. Gregor kills Ser Raymun Darry and his horse with a single blow, and Lord Lothar Mallery drowns in the Red Fork. Ser Gladden Wylde is killed, as are most of Lord Eddard Stark's men.[4]

Beric is mortally wounded by the Mountain's lance, but his young squire Edric Dayne, Lord of Starfall, pulls him out of the Red Fork and stands over Beric while the battle rages around them.[5] Alyn of Winterfell rallies the survivors into a retreat. Thoros reflexively says the words of his faith and administers the last kiss to Beric after he passes, but the young lord unexpectedly comes back to life.[6]

Aftermath

At Moat Cailin, Robb Stark tells his mother, Catelyn Stark, that the Lannisters have won victories at the Golden Tooth and the Mummer's Ford, and that Lord Tywin Lannister has closed off the kingsroad and is marching north towards Harrenhal.[4]

The survivors of Beric's company form the core of the brotherhood without banners. Later at the crossroads inn, after hearing of the Whispering Wood and the Battle of the Camps, Tywin tells Tyrion and Ser Kevan Lannister that Thoros of Myr and Beric continue to plague their foraging parties.[7]

Quotes

In the name of Robert of the House Baratheon, the First of his Name, King of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, by the word of Eddard of the House Stark, his Hand, I charge you to ride to the westlands with all haste, to cross the Red Fork of the Trident under the king's flag, and there bring the king's justice to the false knight Gregor Clegane, and to all those who shared in his crimes. I denounce him, and attaint him, and strip him of all rank and titles, of all lands and incomes and holdings, and do sentence him to death. May the gods take pity on his soul.[3]

We had lions on every side, and I thought I was doomed with the rest, but Alyn shouted commands and restored order to our ranks, and those still ahorse rallied around Thoros and cut our way free. Six score we’d been that morning. By dark no more than two score were left, and Lord Beric was gravely wounded. Thoros drew a foot of lance from his chest that night, and poured boiling wine into the hole it left.[2]

The king is dead, but we are still king's men, though the royal banner we bore was lost at the Mummer's Ford when your brother's butchers fell upon us. Robert is slain, but his realm remains. And we defend her.[8]
