The Battle at the Mummer's Ford was more a massacre than a battle. It involved those sent by Lord Eddard Stark, Hand of the King to arrest Ser Gregor Clegane for crimes committed in the Riverlands, and the forces of Ser Gregor Clegane.

Prelude

Lord Tywin Lannister sent Ser Gregor Clegane and others to ravage the countryside in the Riverlands after Catelyn Stark took Tyrion Lannister prisoner. Lord Hoster Tully sent Ser Marq Piper, Ser Karyl Vance and Ser Raymun Darry to King's Landing to demand justice for the towns that had been pillaged. Lord Eddard Stark, then the King's Hand, obliged, sending out a force under the command of Lord Beric Dondarrion to apprehend Ser Gregor and bring him to justice.[1]

Lord Tywin was hoping Ned Stark would lead the force and planned an ambush so he could obtain a hostage so he could trade for Tyrion. However, Ned's leg was broken by an altercation with Jaime Lannister and he could not lead himself. Ned named Lord Beric Dondarrion to lead the force and sent Thoros of Myr, Ser Raymun Darry, Ser Gladden Wylde and Lord Lothar Mallery along with Alyn and Harwin from his own guard to fight alongside him. The force numbered 120 not including Piper and Vance's men. But once word reached them of the Battle of the Golden Tooth, Piper and Vance left on their own to attack the Lannister supply lines and help break the siege of Riverrun.

Battle

The force under Lord Beric, consisting of several lords, including Lord Lothar Mallery, Ser Raymun Darry and Ser Gladden Wylde along with Thoros of Myr and men from Lord Eddard's personal guard were intercepted at the Mummer's Ford by forces from House Lannister. They made a fighting retreat only to be taken in the rear by Ser Gregor Clegane and his men. Lord Lothar, Ser Raymun and Ser Gladden were all killed, as were most of Lord Eddard's men.[2] Alyn of Winterfell managed to rally the survivors into a retreat. Young Lord Edric Dayne participated as Lord Beric's squire and survived the battle. Lord Edric pulled the dying Lord Beric Dondarrion out of the river and stood over the body while the battle raged around them.[3]

Aftermath

The survivors of this battle formed the core of the Brotherhood Without Banners. This battle allowed Lord Tywin Lannister to close off the kingsroad and march north towards Harrenhal.[2]
