The Battle of Riverrun was the second major battle of the conflict known as the War of the Five Kings.
Prelude
Ser Jaime Lannister, fresh off his victory at the Battle of the Golden Tooth, marched directly on Riverrun, where Ser Edmure Tully hastily assembled his father's troops.
Battle
Ser Jaime Lannister met the massed power of the Tullys under the walls of Riverrun. Securing a victory, Jaime put the lords of the Riverlands to rout. Ser Edmure Tully and many of his knights and bannermen were taken captive. Lord Tytos Blackwood managed to lead some of the surviving men back within Riverrun, where Jaime placed them under siege.[1]
Aftermath
At this point, the war is essentially lost for the Riverlands. With the Tully host scattered, many survivors fled to their own strongholds. Riverrun is besieged, its heir captured, and the rest of the region defenseless. The only possible relief can come from the Northmen, who are cut off by the Green Fork of the Trident and the second Lannister host under Lord Tywin.
Quotes
I am told the Kingslayer went through him like an axe through ripe cheese. [2]
