Lord Beric Dondarrion, also known as the Lightning Lord because of his sigil, is the Lord of Blackhaven and head of House Dondarrion. He is betrothed to Lady Allyria Dayne. Beric's squire is the young Lord Edric Dayne, Lord of Starfall.[3]

At the beginning of A Song of Ice and Fire, Beric is described as handsome with red-gold hair. He is a dashing figure atop a black courser and wears a black satin cloak decorated with stars.[4] In battle he wears a breastplate displaying a forked purple lightning bolt[5] and carries a black shield slashed by lightning.[6] However, the hardships of war change him notably.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Beric comes to King's Landing to fight in the Tourney of the Hand celebrating Eddard Stark's appointment as Hand of the King.[4] Jeyne Poole wishes to marry him as soon as she sees him.[6] During the tournament, he loses a horse in a tilt with a hedge knight and is unhorsed by Thoros of Myr shortly thereafter.[6] After the conclusion of the tournament, Beric remains in King's Landing. This leads to Eddard appointing him leader of an expedition to arrest Ser Gregor Clegane, who has been raiding the Riverlands after the capture of Tyrion Lannister.[7]

Beric is killed in the Battle at the Mummer's Ford, impaled by Gregor's lance while his squire Lord Edric Dayne tries to defend him.[3] The red priest Thoros accidentally resurrects Lord Beric, allowing him to fight again. By the time that Robb Stark and his allies are fighting the Lannister armies near the Trident, Beric's group is continually raiding the Lannisters' foraging parties.[8][9][10][11] Lord Dondarrion is named among the nobles King Joffrey insists must do homage to him or be named traitors.[12]

Rumors have Beric as missing or perhaps dead.[8][13] Yet, he is still raiding the Lannister foraging parties[11] and Ser Gregor Clegane's group is actively seeking him,[14] as are Tywin Lannister's forces stationed at Harrenhal.[15] His group meets smallfolk plagued by the ravage of Lannister forces but does not trouble them, and he attempts to pay for the food they take.[15]

A Storm of Swords

Beric Dondarrion vs Sandor Clegane - by Amok ©

Arya Stark and Gendry meet Beric in the hollow hill, where he is revealed to be the leader of the brotherhood without banners and a follower of the Lord of Light. They watch as Sandor Clegane duels Beric in a trial by battle. While Thoros of Myr always lit his blades with wildfire, Beric uses his own blood to make his sword magically aflame. Despite Sandor's fear of fire, he is able to slay Beric. Much to their surprise, however, Beric is revived by Thoros of Myr.[5]

It is revealed that, after he was slain by Ser Gregor Clegane in the Battle at the Mummer's Ford, Beric was resurrected by Thoros of Myr[16] and became the leader of the outlaw band, the brotherhood without banners. He was killed several more times, but was repeatedly brought back to life, each time with fewer memories of his life before the War of the Five Kings. He was captured near the Gods Eye and hanged by Lannisters, but was cut down before he could die.[17] He was slain by Ser Burton Crakehall, hanged by Ser Amory Lorch at Rushing Falls, had a dirk put through his eye by Gregor, and was then killed by Sandor in front of Arya. Beric has become a scarecrow of a man, his battered body bearing all the wounds of his previous deaths.

Arya accompanies Beric when his outlaws attack the Bloody Mummers at a sept, after which he knights Gendry.[16] Beric later visits the ghost of High Heart to hear her wisdom. Because Beric wants to ransom Arya to her family, she runs away from the brotherhood.[3]

A Feast for Crows

Thoros reveals to Brienne of Tarth that Beric truly died when he gave his life to bring back Catelyn Tully, whose body had been found by the outlaws after the Red Wedding. The brotherhood has fractured with the change in leadership, with some leaving the outlaw band.[18]

The Seven Deaths of Dondarrion

  1. Impaled on a lance by Ser Gregor Clegane.[8][19][3]
  2. Smashed with a mace on the side of the head by Ser Burton Crakehall.[11][16]
  3. Hanged at Rushing Falls by Ser Amory Lorch.[19][16]
  4. Stabbed in the eye with a dirk by Ser Gregor Clegane.[19][16]
  5. Killed by an archer of the Brave Companions sellsword company.[19]
  6. Killed by Sandor Clegane in a trial by combat.[5]
  7. Gave up his lifeforce to resurrect Catelyn Tully.[18]

Quotes

Guardsman: Here to fight in the Hand's tourney, my lord?
Beric: Here to win the Hand's tourney.[4]

- Beric arriving in King's Landing

Robert is slain, but his realm remains. And we defend her.[5]

- Beric to Sandor Clegane

Even brave men blind themselves sometimes, when they are afraid to see.[16]

- Beric to Arya Stark

Can I dwell on what I scarce remember? I held a castle on the Marches once, and there was a woman I was pledged to marry, but I could not find that castle today, nor tell you the color of that woman's hair. Who knighted me, old friend? What were my favorite foods? It all fades. Sometimes I think I was born on the bloody grass in that grove of ash, with the taste of fire in my mouth and a hole in my chest. Are you my mother, Thoros?[16]

- Beric to Thoros of Myr

Beric: Gendry, do you swear before the eyes of gods and men to defend those who cannot defend themselves, to protect all women and children, to obey your captains, your liege lord, and your king, to fight bravely when needed and to such other tasks as are laid upon you, however hard or humble or dangerous they may be?

Gendry: I do, m'lord.

Beric: Arise Ser Gendry, knight of the hollow hill, and be welcome to our brotherhood.[16]

- Beric and Gendry

Fire consumes. It consumes, and when it is done there is nothing left. Nothing.[3]

- Beric to Thoros of Myr
